Who’s The Fool Now?
By: Cesar | November 28th, 2008
Happy Thanksgiving to all of the American Valencia followers … and to anyone out there that likes stuffing their face full of food! It was an enjoyable holiday full of grub, merriment and joy.
One of the reasons the holiday turned out so well was the 4-0 bashing we gave to Norway’s Rosenborg last night.
You think they have any more jokes to make about us?
I didn’t watch the match because of the festivities but from what I’ve read, we dominated.
Goals from Mata, Baraja, Joaquin and an absolute sizzler from Pablo saw the Norwegian side off.
For videos of the goals, please go here.
It’s pay back of sorts. Not only did they insult us a few days ago, they destroyed us in the Champions League last season. So one could say, ‘Revenge is sweet.’ That it is …
Great win for our boys heading into the weekend fixture against Real Betis, a match-up we should win against a club playing surprisingly well. Betis sit in 8th place at 17 points, 7 away from us.
Still, it’s a game we should win. They’re points we can hardly afford to drop, considering what looms ahead of us in the form of Barcelona at the Nou Camp.
Besides the destruction of Rosenborg, good news abounds in the signing of the next ‘Roberto Carlos’, Brazilian teenager Tiago Carleto.
No where did this come from? Sporting director Fernando’s been working under the radar the whole while and we hardly realized!
The 19-year-old left back signed on a six-year contract from Brazilian side Santos despite reported interest from Real Madrid and Manchester United.
Carleto moved for an undisclosed fee believed to be in the region of $7.7 million.
Speaking earlier in the year, the highly-rated youngster was anticipating a move to one of Europe’s leading clubs.
He said: “I am happy that Real Madrid and Manchester United are interested in me as they are two of the best clubs in the world.”
Well, too bad for them. He’s with us now.
“I never had any doubts about what I wanted ever since I started hearing about the interests shown in me,” he told Brazilian newspaper Gazeta Esportiva.
“I didn’t need to think twice to accept the offer Valencia made. I believe that this is the big change I’ve been waiting for.”
The former Santos man then went on to give his first appraisals of his future club: “I’m convinced that this Valencia team coached by Unai Emery will have a much better season compared to the last campaign, where they encountered a lot of problems.”
Carleto only broke into first-team football last year, but he quickly became Brazilian international Kléber’s permanent understudy at Santos.
Great signing by Valencia … encouraging to say the least.
Who knows how long it will take the Brazilian to make the transition into the first team. We don’t have a great track record when it comes to our signings the past few seasons (Zigic, Sunny, etc.) but I have a feeling the speedy teenager will fit right into the side.
As Fernando said after the signing was announced it’s up to Tiago how far he progresses.
But that’s not all. According to reports, we’re still after Brazilian striker Keirrison, one of the most sought-after youngsters in world football.
But wait … there’s more! According to reports in Germany, we’re set to table bids for Bayer Leverkusen duo Gonzalo Castro and Tranquilla Barnetta.
Now I admit to not knowing much about the German duo or the Brazilian striker. But reports indicate all three are the real deal.
Barnetta is a 23-year old Swiss midfielder and was one of the shortlisted players for the 2006 World Cup’s Best Young Player award.
Castro is a 21-year old German defender and … that’s about all I know.
Both players are essentially midfielders although they can play as wing-backs and have done so in the past. Ok …
Again, I don’t know much about them. But the fact the club’s trying to obtain young players and is pro active about getting new blood speaks volumes. Now if they can figure out how to incorporate these guys into the first team, I’d be delighted.
My question is: Where’s the money coming from for these guys??
Fernando said today that while the door’s open to new transfers, it’s probable the club’s done shopping for the winter. Global recession, anyone?
Also, what’s this about Spanish bank Bancaja not lending Valencia money for the club?
President Vicente Soriano’s upset about this, saying it’s sad that a Valencian institution is giving the club a cold shoulder.
It’s gotten so bad that there are reports Soriano might leave the club in the next few days.
While I doubt this will happen, what is apparent is that the club is and has been in debt for a very long time. The banks don’t want to issue us any more money. The club needs the money and we’re in a financially unstable situation.
So what’s going to happen?
We play the games. We cross our fingers and hope Fernando can find some good, cheap talent out there. And we continue to support the club. What else can we do?

Perhaps in the next match, we should try to play Hedwiges Maduro. I hear that he’s the former Ajax captain. He must be an experienced and also a quality player. He closed the hole in the defence eversince he came in against Betis.

Im just wondering who our two CBs would be against Barca. Albiol would definitely be one of them, but if Valencia dont appeal for the red card for Marchena (and I think they should as it was only a yellow card and penalty), with Alexis injured…would it be Albiol-Helguera against Barca?
Man I cant wait….Posted from

Im not sure who would be better as a CB against Barca, Maduro or Helguera…Maduro used to play as a CB sometimes for Ajax.

Maduro plays in CM and CB both.. he should play in midweek!! him with Marchena.. that’s it .. let the young boys rest. give some time to Mata (who is fatiqued from playing) and Villa.. Albelda, Fernandes are all important.. with Joaquin!
we should be able to play both on good level.. get a draw with Brugue and another with Barca.. we’re satisfied with that!

7amanito : Yeah I agree, our players need to rest or we would have an injury crisis if this continues. The game against Brugge isnt a must win for us, all we need is a draw to go through. The following players shouldnt play : Renan, Miguel, Moretti, Miguel, Fernandes, Baraja, Joaquin, Mata and Villa. We have replacements for all of them. In terms of attack Emery has many options instead of Mata and Villa (Zigic, Morientes and Michel). The same goes for Miguel and Moretti (Ximo and Del Horno respectively). The only problem I see is in CMF with Edu injured then Maduro has to play there. If Marchena doesnt win an appeal to play against Barca then he should be paired with Helguera so Albiol can rest.
Maybe Emery should look into our B team for someone to play in the center (as we only have Maduro and Viana at the moment).Posted from

Edit: Just ignore the two Miguel’s I have in there (I meant Albiol).

This is typical for Valencia the past few years. We’re leading 2-0 halfway, after that the primadonas run for the beach to catch some tan!!! This could neved had happened under Benitez or Cuper. NEVER!
I always say this: 2-0 is the most “dangerous” score for the leading team. Players get lazy, they shift down a gear or two, then THIS happens! Bloody disgrace, if you ask me. On the other hand, it was time that we got lucky for once. We deserved this win nonetheless. Now let’s play our B team against Brugge and prepare for Barca.Posted from

RENAN IS I

Quin in my opinion the players did not shift down a gear, they seemed tired from playing midweek, Miguel looked tired the whole game. Edu and Alexis getting injured limited the amount of adjustment’s Emery could make and the refereeing of this game was very poor, Betis second goal was contrived through refereeing incompetence, Marchena did not commit a foul he played the ball first and then half a second later the betis player fell down, the reff could not see the incident clearly because the box was crowded and he made the wrong decision, a reff should always rule on the defenders side if there is any doubt. the reff botched calls against both teams a betis player got a yellow card for what was supposed to be a hard fowl on Alboil replays showed that Alboil got hit through accidental contact yet again the reff did not see the incident because the box was crowded and made the wrong decision. that Referee should be sent to the second devision!
Valencia showed a lot of heart this game winning with 10 men. they did not fall apart after Marchena was sent off, they kept their composure scored and kept their shape well and held off betis for the last quarter of the game. Renan needs to improve his goalkeeping and Valencia need to go back to playing mostly alternates midweek so the first unit is fresh for league games.

Whew, like everyone else, I’m happy/relieved with the win. The first 20 minutes made it look like we’d win 4-nil. We got lucky to pull that out. Was it me or did it look like Albelda didn’t even move to prevent the breaks? He looked totally inept at the back, making way for Betis to put together the attack. That said, we got the points: back in 3rd place, ahead of Puta Madrid!! If we play like we did early on, we have a shot at Barca. Let’s do this!!!

@Timothy: I think Albelda was a rock in the 1st half but was extremely slow and terrible in the 2nd, im pretty sure he was tired after the midweek match. Emery has to take note of this and not play any first team players during the midweek.

Incidently I was calculating our points in 2004 (when we won la liga) :
- By the 13th round we had 27 points (exactly the same as we have now!).
- But we had tougher matches and we still won against Real Madrid (2-0), Barca (1-0) and Atletico (3-0).
- And we also lost against Racing
So there are some similarities between this season and 03/04 when we won la liga. Let’s hope the similarities continue until the end!

hard fought win. i agree we should have not let them back int he game .. but in reality i dont think they would have scored a second goal without that penalty. valencia were the stronger team even with 10 men. thus why we scored and won the game. Even down a man we looked like we we on even a level field.
Villa and Mata in teh first 20 minutes looked magnificent. Edu wow. he was playing great then got injured.. why oh why do these great talents Edu and vicente constantly fall so easily to injury.
Anyways we are in 3rd now and are progressing solidly. lets keep it up. while beating A healthy Barcelona right now seems like a longshot you never know maybe messi will eat some bad tapas. in my opinion without messi barca are a shade of themselves. Im praying for at least 1 point from the barca match.
AMUNT VALENCIA!

Didnt watch the game but good to see everyone excited enough to comment on it.
Does anyone know how serious is Alexis’ injury? Is there no chance he will be fit in time? I’m really scared about the number of goals we would concede with a leaky goalie and a makeshift defense against Barca.

A lot of you are using Renan as the scapegoat. He is not as bad as you make out, he made some good saves. The first goal Betis scored was a hard shot from 12 feet away. From this distance the scorer just picks his spot and it is too much to expect Renan to do much about it. In the penalty incident, if you look at the replays you will see that actually Miguel kicked the ball out of Renans hands. After we got our winning goal at 72 mins, Emery takes off Joaquin for Maduro. I thought that was shear madness. With only 1 goal advantage against such a lively attacking Betis (I think they had something good to drink at half-time!!) We must ourselves keep on the attack, especially with 1 man less. As you say Emery is not using the subs in unimportant games. What is the point of Helguera and Zigic training if you dont use them. I think we have to prepare ourselves for a loss against Bastardlona at the weekend but lets hope we can keep the goals down and score a couple. What on earth is going on about goalkeepers with the club saying they are not spending any more money. Hilde will be off in the Winter break and if Renan is injured, how can we go to a match with just one! Are we going to rob another goalie from our 2ndb team ……..Almendras

For those of you who watched the match, as I did, on GolTV: anybody else get annoyed by the ineptitude of the announcers? I know, I know, they’re always bad, aside from Ray Hudson, but they couldn’t even get our players names right. They consistently said that the Valencia player who made the cross for the first goal was Moretti – it was clearly Edu. They even said it was Moretti during the highlights at halftime!

Cant this new guy we bought play??? i hope to see Zigic play and score a hatrick so emery would kinda be forced to give him some playing time in league games! i think Zigic is a great player once played! i would defintlky rest Villa, Mata, juaquin, Albiol, Miguel, Fernandes, Albelda.
id like to see hildebrand and zigic play! hilguera i dnt care to see him play, hes got nothing tht would unterest any human being!Posted from
