Wake Me Up When It’s Over

By: Cesar | December 16th, 2008

Our Beloved Valencia CF travel to France tomorrow to face off against St. Etienne in the final match in Group G of the UEFA Cup (Euro Vase).

Etienne are currently in first place in the group, two points above Los Che.
And … I’m too bored to write more about this match.

I know, I know. I should be oh-so-passionate about this game, a match that could decide our fate in Euro Vase, UEFA’s consolation prize.

But really … when we’re already qualified for the 2nd round, when we face Real Madrid on Saturday … how am I supposed to get riled up for this game?

Here, the efficient Goal.com tells us a little bit about our competition:

St Etienne have been impressive in the UEFA Cup, easily coasting to the top of the section with commanding wins over Rosenborg and København. But their domestic form has been woeful. Currently languishing in 17th place in the French league, they are only a hazardous two points clear of the relegation zone.

Coach Alain Perrin will have to make the tough decision whether to rest his key players to focus on Ligue 1 duties, or send out a decently strong first team to face their Spanish counterparts to avoid finishing second and having to meet a Champions League opponent.

Basically, they’re not very good …

As far as we’re concerned, we’re taking a full squad to France. But with the Madrid match on the weekend, don’t expect to see David Villa, Joaquin and Mata. Look for lads like Guaita, Curro Torres and Hugo Viana to drop their Manolo shifts and stretch their legs some against France’s 17th-best squad.

So … excuse me while I yawn through this post … but wake me up when this match is over …

As for the game on the weekend, the entire Spanish sporting press (i.e. Madrid agenda pushers AS and MARCA) are creaming in their pants over Madrid’s performance against Barcelona this past weekend.

Am I crazy or did they not lose that match, just like former coach Bernd Schuster said they would?

For an insightful read about this strange phenomenon, read Sid Lowe’s current article in the Guardian.

Seems some journalists in the capital didn’t see the same game I did … a hard-fought contest, yes. But one that showed Barca’s superiority over and over again.

The game this weekend’s a big one.

Personally, I consider Real Madrid our biggest rivals, more than Barcelona and certainly more than the Valencian triumvirate of Levante, Villarreal and Hercules.

I’ve mixed feelings about the capital’s team.

While my feelings for Barcelona are pretty clear (although more muddled the past few months), Madrid always present me with a conundrum.

You may remember we’ve already played them this season, losing Spain’s season-opening SuperCopa in devastating fashion.

As far as winger Joaquin is concerned, Valencia are heading to the Santiago Bernabéu this weekend looking for reprisal for the Cup defeat.

“We want a bit of revenge because we were really hurting after that defeat,” Joaquín explained.

“Although they are not doing well, Madrid are still Madrid and we will have to be at our best because we will be playing the current champions at their place. We cannot let our guard down at all and we will keep going to see what we can do. The whole second half of the season is yet to come.

“We are taking each game as it comes and I think the first half of the season has been very positive.”

Great attitude and nice to hear Pisha give reporters something more than the usual cliches. The games matter to the players, too. Who knew?

With Fabio Cannavaro and Wesley Sneijder doubtful for the match, who knows? We may get our chance at revenge after all …

Its not that mate, before everybody said they wanted to win and that the conditions could not be given as an excuse, now i saw a Valencia play like crap, with a midfield playing at the same line as the defence against the number 17 of Ligue 1. I mean, we are fucking Valencia, why do we even LET such an opponent get into the game?
What Valencia does is adjust to its opponent: when its weak, we start playing crap. When its stronger, we try to be strong too but since we have a motivation of nothing, we wont win those in the end… I see such a game as a good warm-up for the Real Madrid match, but if we keep lowering our own level we will never had the mental strength to keep up with the big teams. And this mentality (Fayez you were right last week, excuse me), is what doesn’t make us win bigger matches. I dont know if any of you guys like Valencia winning or drawing crappy teams and when facing tougher ones lose, and still get a CL spot!? Its not fine with me, cause i wanna see 11 lions fighting for ever ball, every chance, every second of football so they can at least say we give their all everytime they defend our shirt. But this is just not what happens, we play like we have the mentality of an annorexic girl!!! Man…

@johnnie Walker… u speak pearls *everything u said is right in tht previus post*
i think last season, when QQ got fires and koeman came… we lost our name, (forget our financial crisis) we use to bid for big players and would be surethey would be honoured to play for Valencia, cuz the Valencia was as good as playing for Roma and arsenal too. But know we lack the confidence we had… we use to play inter and not be frightened… if we played inter now.. im sry to say a lot of us will have a racey heart… ill be the first one!

This might sound from outer space and extremely wierd but i kinda believe in…. i think la liga has an amuont of success… picture the sucsess as a cake, the more a team takes from tht cake, the less other teams have cake available to eat from ( the less sucess they have )
proof,,, last season i think all of mallorca, racing, espanyol and villareal took a part of our cake,, thus we r left with only little sucess.
On the other hand, this season we have a bigger amount of sucsess cuz the sucess espanyol, mallora, racing, is less, but i think villareal still got our sucsess cuz they r still doing good! and obviously Barca took a big chunk of Madrids cake ( success )

if we went at that game like mental nutters and injured half our squad doing disney on ice, had mad machena sent off,who would be content with playing our b team against real mierda this weekrnd,i suspect nobody.

i agree that we arnt the force we were but after the two fat fuckers in charge last year we are doing brilliantley well.

Has any one noticed that ever since Marchena came back from injury our defense became leaky? I actually noticed this a couple of days ago…

Albiol and Alexis were a fine pair and our defence WAS the best in La Liga, but ever since Marchena came back our defense turned into shambles. I’m not saying that it’s Marchena’s fault but it is an interesting coincidence.

I’ve always said that Marchena looks good only when he’s paired with a world class defender (Ayala,Puyol)

@Mohammed You are very right. Now Marchena and Albiol play in CB position, but I think these two have the same style, that’s why they can’t cooperate that well. I mean what is impossible for one is impossible for the other too. Alexis is a different kind of player (I don’t mean the quality) I mean the style. He can better cooperate either with Albiol or with Marchena. I think we should play Alexis-Marchena one match and Alexis-Albiol the other…

thing is, i see returning similarities with the team of last year, when i also know our team can do great things. Its all a matter of mentality, and somehow i am not that convinced that Emery is doing such a great job. I thought he would be magical but he does some strange things sometimes and doesnt use our team in the optimal way. Anyway of course we are doing better than last year, but that was our worst year in years so we cant do much worse than that now. Rather, like Ali said, compaire us with 2 years back when we went full throttle against Inter and such, cause we knew how good we were. Now it seems we lost our confidence, or maybe we are overconfident and we become lazy, which might be even worse…

Even more horrific than the confidence things…i am hearing lots of bad things..

MIguel has said he wants to leave valencia to join the premier league…
    Zigic has been loaned out…

i dont know why emery did that unless he knows he is bringing in Keirrison in january..

young mr walker.emery is fairly young and fairly inexperienced at the level we now find ourselves.i would have prefered a steady rise to these dizzy hieghts.i think don emery is still experimenting and seeing what is what, finding his feet at this ñevel hopefully
( lol id like to truley believe that )

ive read alis post several times and seeing as im totaly sober for a change .im not sure i fully understand it.i think he is saying we are not the force we once were because other clubs are catching us up ? that is bad for us but good for the liga i supose

from what i read of don emery before he joined us i believe he bored or ground his players into submission ,to accept his beliefes and ways of doing things, perhaps this is still going on and we can expect the players that dont play ball ( no pun intended ) to be farmed out or got rid off

overall im very suprised and pleased to see our club where it is and still grinding out good results.i think next year we will see a truley wonderfull attacking unstopable valencia.

when players of the quality of pablo aimar and fabian ayala are allowed to leave a club you know there is no ambition, anyway im rambling now, need a drink.

yeah maybe we should have more patience with our team / coach, but i think when a coach is inexperienced and with such a squad it should be possible for our players to motivate our team, not? Well ill be patient, but i need to see fire in our players eyes, and that doesnt get there cause of coaching methodes, but through caracter. Anyway we will see, until than, i will share that drink with ya. Cheers

well to the best of my knowledge when for whatever reason a team has picked itself and been responsable for its own tactics.its been a nightmare,i guess thts why there are managers, they dont seem able to motivate themselves.for us mere mortals the honour of putting the shirt on would be enough to ensure 200 por cien effort.

its amazing after a drink i can see my keyboard and almost speelll as well.

Ok, Ok, so we have some issues right now, but look at all the good things. We have a fiery young coach that has been doing well. It seems like almost every week we see another big club firing their coach. We have solved our financial crisis for now it seems, we are in 2nd place in La Liga, and have gone through in the UEFA and COPA. There is a lot to be positive about. A victory Saturday would make it that much sweeter!!!!

    AMUNT!

@ Johnnie: I agree with what you’re saying, Valencia have to fix this mentality that they have. Im not quite sure if Emery is doing enough or he doesnt mind it (I mean 2 years ago he was fighting for a la liga spot with Almeria and last year 8th position was above their expectations). Im not saying Emery isnt the right man, but he has a lot to learn.

And what sort of idiot would loan out Zigic when we only have 2 other strikers? Do they seriously rate Michel to be as good as Zigic? I mean with the little time he takes on the pitch he’s been scoring!
How can we play on 3 fronts with so few players? We will just end up with so many injured players in the end.

I dont understand why LOAN Zigic! Just sell him in the summer but why loan him when we need him?

Zigic loan-deal has been denied by our club, stating the agreement was oral, dating a few months back and no recent deal on paper or Zigic approval has been realised. So no worries yet mates, think Zigic wont wanna leave anyway.

    @ Mohammed
Dont think so, chances for him leaving Brazil are small, let alone with our financial situation… They wanna cash in, and we dont have cash…

    @ bob
I do… There was a time in life i woke up with a hang-over every morning, even when i didnt drink the night before. But those days were like maybe max 5 times a month max, and the year was called: “first year of “studying”". Now i just enjoy the alcohol, but still enough ;) Life is good, so enjoy it with a fine wine, whiskey, beer or just an orange juice! This is more like it:

    No ACTIVITY!!!!

    Where did you go cesar???

anyways…Our club are desperately trying to loan ZIGiC while he doesnt seem to be intrested….
I just Hope we are getting Keirrison!!!..

anyways we have to face dynamo Kiev in the uefa cup next!!it is going to be very difficult ,they were very good in champions league…

Hang ON!!! EMery might just have changed his mind ,He has included ZIGIC in the squad for Real madrid match…hope he scores and makes emery understand ,he can be our plan B against the defensive teams,Just cross or pump the ball forward…zigic wins the header and cushions it to villa, mata, silva and we score!!! awesome. He can be useful against the small teams who dont want to play football…

ok i heard another news from goal that valencia have told that Man City can buy VIlla for 127 million euros..
i know its a rumour…but if they make an offer of 75 million euros ,our board might accept but it will come down to Villa himself and he will say NO to Man city.so no worries….

I am nervous about tomorrow’s match ,but i hope we can win and put the record straight against them….
also if real dont want van der waart ,we should get him for 8 million…

I’m happy with the uefa cup draw – although kiev is decent, it could’ve been a lot worse. We should be able to take them down and the next tie will be easier. I hope we can VdV for a discount – that would be sick, as we all wanted him from the beginning. Apparently Raul is out for tomorrow’s clash. We need these 3 points, especially to fuck Madrid and make them fall down to 8th place before xmas. Feliz Navidad.

As for Kiev, I think they are the best option for us. They’re definitely not a weak team (and the away game there is always difficult), but I personally think they’re easier than Fiorentina and Bremen.
