Villa Gives Life to Valencia
By: Cesar | April 16th, 2007
I managed to make my way to the local pub and watched a surprisingly good performance by Valencia.
Consider me humbled, as I predicted a 2-0 loss.
Some notes:
- Joaquin continues to look amazing. He’s playing very well & the signing’s finally paying off.
- Canizares made a fine save on the penalty kick. At his age (37 I believe), he’s still an outstanding goalkeeper.
- David Villa made Dani Alves look pedestrian. He played a cracker of a game. Great first goal, nice penalty. I could go on and on about this guy …
- Where was Albelda today? Injured?
- Why didn’t we play this way against Chelsea?
- Marchena will miss the Real Madrid clash next weekend. He’s very important and that will cost us.
- Morientes played, right? He was in uniform and ran around, but I think I saw him for the first time in the 88th minute. He’s celebrating in the photo on the right, but he looks like he hardly broke a sweat. Very slow game for him.
- What was Real Madrid president Ramon Calderon doing at the game? Scouting?
Overall, a fine bounceback after defeat to Chelsea midweek.
What does it all mean? We’re fourth, still 6 back after Barca’s humiliatingly lucky win to Mallorca. Real Madrid lost, we beat Sevilla and Zaragoza lost, so we’re at 53 points, 3 in front of Zaragoza, 1 behind Madrid, 2 behind Sevilla and 6 behind Barca. I think we’re in an ok position. The League is still in play, but the opportunities are dwindling.
Next week: Real Madrid at the Bernabeu. More on that as the week progresses.
Finally, some more tidbits:
- For the Valencianos reading, how is the America’s Cup in Valencia going?
- Should he stay or should he go? Quique manages to confuse. I’m still up in the air, changing my mind every week about this man. How about we bring in Bernd Shuster?
- Great article by Phil Ball about Valencia, La Liga and Europe. A must-read … this man consistently writes penetrating, in-depth articles about the game in Spain, weaving in bits of Spanish culture & society along the way. He’s first-rate and I highly recommend his book about Spanish football, Morbo

It’s awesome to see that Joaquin got his groove back. I was beginning to get worried…I personally think we need to get rid of Quique. He’s an okay manager but he gives such inconsistent performances. He isn’t a big club coach. Our squad is the one of the best we’ve had in years and we are capable of so much more. I think I heard something about a link between Shuster and Valencia and to be honest, I would love to have him (although I want Juande more)

It was a soothing game. Valencia played and won easily, specially in the second half after the red card to Hinkel.
Albelda had a last minute problem with his knee.
Marchena is a very important loss for next game against Real Madrid.
The America’s Cup was scheduled to begin today, but due to the lack of wind, it has been delayed.
I’m for Quique’s going out from Valencia. Far, far away.
¿Any other question?

great win by los che. lets hope the boys contuniu to win all the other games that are coming, so we maybe will end on top in the championship. joaquin played very well and so did villa. if we played solid, like we did against sevilla sunday, we can beat real in madrid. so bring on madrid!! AMUNT VALENCIA.
PS: (sorry for my bad english)

Morientes was okay, though not great. His presence provided some space for Villa to operate. He had a few decent touches, but wasn’t dominant nor was he completely invisble. Viana had a decent second half. And yes, Ximo is finally rounding into form. I think about month and a half ago he resigned himself to put aside the Quique bullshit and just play. Before he was really hesitant with the ball, almost impatient. Now he takes the time to make the better decision and the better play.
Valencia didn’t play this way against Chelsea because: a. Marchena was missing,(Marchena has clearly been the better holding midfielder the last month) and b. each second half Quique was clearly outcoached by Mourinho.
I agree with Sarrah and abraxas, Quique needs to go.
