Vicente and Fernandes On Way Out, Villa Next?

By: Cesar | December 20th, 2007

1198171612686_efe_20071220_155448_1.jpgThings are moving quickly at the Mestalla.

First, check out this video of David Albelda’s press conference today. I tell you, most Valencia fans will get a lump in their throat seeing the captain shed tears over leaving the Mestalla. Sad.

But life moves on. And Ronald Koeman’s housecleaning continues.

First, sporting director Miguel Ángel Ruiz is saying the housecleaning at the Mestalla is entirely Koeman’s idea. “These decisions are totally and exclusively the coach’s decisions.” So basically, his hands are clean … whatever.

Now, word that beloved winger Vicente along with summer signings Manuel Fernandes and Nikola Zigic are about to get the boot.

Wow. Already?

This on the heels of Angulo getting the cut yesterday, ending a 10-year spell with the club.

Albelda, former Spain keeper Canizares and Angulo are three of the club’s most influential, experienced and successful players.

All three were part of the side that won the league title in 2002 and did the league and UEFA Cup double two years later when Rafa Benitez was in charge.

The 38-year-old Canizares has been with Valencia since 1998, Albelda, who is 30 and has won 50 caps, graduated from the youth system as did Angulo.

Further along, David Villa’s agent, Jose Luis Tamargo, told MARCA, “Villa wants to be on a winning team, not a reconstructing one.”

So David Villa may bail!

So in three days, here’s who is supposedly leaving:

David Albelda
Canizares
Fernandes
Zigic
Angulo
Vicente
David Villa

That’s a lot of players. Who’s coming in??

As for the first two to get the ax, Santi had this to say: “The other day, I said that I was 99% certain that I wanted to retire with Valencia, and I’ve likely played my last game for them, as they’ve decided that. Maybe this is the farewell that God had planned for me.”

An icon like Santi deserved a little better. True, he probably shouldn’t be starting anymore. But a 38-year old ‘keeper who played a wicked match against Chelsea a week ago and who is a cagey veteran deserved a little better, no? What a slap in the face.

Word is he may try to play in the USA’s MLS league … I’m already cleaning my apartment so he can stay with me.

As for our captain Albelda, he said, “The club’s leadership has no class.”

“I’m devastated because this was the last thing I expected after all I have achieved at this club,” Valencia captain Albelda told a news conference on Thursday.

“They haven’t explained why they have done this. Koeman just said he didn’t have any faith in my leadership on or off the pitch and I responded that after 20 days in charge of the team he didn’t know me well enough.

“He has no idea the sort of effort it took for me to get here.”

“After what we’ve achieved here and growing with the club, I can die in peace,” continued the 30-year-old.

“I leave with a clear conscience. I always did my best and was always willing to help.”

Unlike Santi, Albelda has no desire to quit football.

“I was absolutely shocked because it’s so unexpected, after all I’ve been through, but I foresee more days to come,” he began.

“The directors at this club have no class or status to humiliate me like this. I have received no explanation from the president or anyone in his circle. I am leaving with my head held high and my conscience clear.”

“Don’t humiliate me. I’ll always be remembered in Valencia as a humble friend who helped out.”

You will. Too bad it turned so sour so quickly.
More on these two at a later time. They’re Valencia legends and deserve our praise for what they’ve done here.

We played a game yesterday. Won. 2-1 in the King’s Cup against Real Unión de Irun. FINALLY … two goals from the departing Zigic. Yay.

I read that Villa quote, but it was so vague I wasn’t sure what to think — is the belief that he’ll leave NOW, or wait until summer (if he leaves at all)? When is his contract up, do you know?

Cesar, you know my boy Calderon is gonna see the Villa quote and say, “100 million be damned”. He will certainly look like an interesting prospect should he become available, as would Albedla or Vicente. Looks like Valencia is going to be like Walmart on the first of the month, lots of sales.

Cesar , are you basing your reports about Manuel Fernandes, Vicente and Zigic leaving on the goal.com article?
Goal.com is fast becoming like tribalfootball – putting every speculation as news item.

Kuku, goal.com and Marca.com, who is also reporting this news. I think goal.com basically goes on marca.com, uses babelfish and reports the news.

Sad, sad times at the Mestalla. We all knew Albelda and Santi needed to go. But not like this. They have been great for the club, but they deserve more respect than this.

However, I’m happy to let Tintin treat Angulo however he sees fit.

I fully expect a couple of them to end up at Liverpool. Albelda, Angulo, and (hopefully) Vicente. The latter two would just be brilliant, but we’ll take any of them. Villa or Silva are just too much to fathom.

I saw the video and got really teary eyed myself.

I thought about this again, and I don’t understand why Koeman can’t simply bench the two guys? Strip their captaincy, whatever? They have every right to retire with the club. It’s like firing a 64 year old guy when he’s a year away from retirement.

Le Guen at PSG is doing something similar in that for a while, he benched most of his senior players, stripped Landreau of the captaincy, and in some cases sent some players to the stands, and he promoted a bunch of youth players. And after a while, the wake up call worked.

I take back what I said about this being a possibly good if bold move. I understand that Koeman wants to change things around, but those changes should be made with class. Valenica might be playing like a pub team, but they aren’t a pub team. It’s a team that reaches into the hearts of over a million people, most of whom hold these departing players in high regard. Events like this will only increase dressing room tensions and may cause Valencia to drop in attractiveness.

I’ll have more to say about this when it’s all said and done. But I agree with you, Inara. It’s something that needed to be done, yes. We talked about it months ago.
But to do it this way is SUCH a slap in the face to what Canyete and Albelda have done for this club … they deserved better. Both have been captains, both have sweated and cried for this club, both are monster players and both deserve MUCH better than they’ve gotten from people like Soler and Koeman.
I’m surprised that Soler, a valencianista, can’t understand why the people are mad. Uggh …

Yeah the way it was handled was poor, Koeman is a tyrant of a coach and unless they dramatically improve, this is a wasted move.

Vicente will be tackled out of his ….I don’t know which word to adopt in EPL. He’s not a easy-going person on the pitch so he’ll probably get a lot of red cards.

Anyway, if any of them are transfer listed, I am sure none of them would go to Real. Your boy Calderon can pay 150M and have Villa or the deal is off.

As for DV, he contract runs until like 201*. If he wants to leave, (how can he not) he can always go to Italy.

I don’t see how they can improve dramatically. Everyone at the club is busying helping themselves. Can anyone focus on football?

I hope David Villa goes to Madrid. They were already talking of the negotiations between Valencia and Madrid for him. Being on a struggling club will not help Villa who is very talented. Even Silva should move out. A club who can get rid of a world class Goalie like Cani, or a dedicated captain like Albelda, is disgraceful. This is obviously a club who doesn’t give a rats ass about their players, and will get rid of anyone else, no matter who they are. I love Valencia C.F., and I’m very upset about how things are being run. If QuiQue wasn’t sacked near the middle of the season, koeman wouldn’t have come, and this never would have happened. Now he’s going to bring some of the players he’s worked with who probably don’t have the caliber of a Canizares or Albelda. What a slap in the face for these veterans who’ve done so much.
