Vendetta: Chelsea FC
By: Cesar | October 2nd, 2007
The upcoming match with England’s Chelsea FC isn’t really about revenge.
True, they beat us in last season’s Champions League quarterfinals en route to the semis and defeat to old coach Rafa Benitez’s Liverpool.
But does anyone here truly hate Chelsea? Like, really loathe them? Like how we disliked Inter Milan?
I doubt it.
Let’s be honest: Chelsea came to the Mestalla last season and after a poor first-half, turned on the engines and showed us what a truly well-coached club could do. Jose Mourinho’s men ran us ragged for 45 minutes, inserting the final knife wound with Michael Essien’s strike at the death. 2-1 and we were out of the Champions League.
Things are much different this season.
Valencia is ‘flyin’ high’, winners of our last seven matches in all competitions.
Chelsea? Well, they’re in the pits.
The Special One is gone. The owner is the new ‘coach’. Confidence for the once-proud Blues is at an all-time low.
Still, no need to awaken a sleeping giant. The tone has been subdued, compared to the venomous words uttered before last season’s ‘Vendetta’ matches against Inter. We remember what happened in those games, no?
Well, save for some interesting comments today from striker extraordinaire Fernando Morientes. Seems he thinks Chelsea’s a bit out of it, especially with John Terry a question mark with a broken cheekbone.
“I don’t think Chelsea’s problems are confined to defense,” he said.
“Jose Mourinho has gone and that is sure to have a big effect on them and it will take time for the new coach to implement his ideas, and now Terry is injured. Not only that but they will be facing a Valencia team that has won its last five games and is starting to find its best form of the season. This game is coming at a very good moment for us, but it would be wrong to rely on Chelsea’s problems. They still have a lot of good individuals but they are not the team of the last few years.”
After a deep breath, Moro continued: “We were all very impressed with Chelsea last year and because of what happened at the Mestalla we are hoping for revenge,” Morientes admitted. “They are a hard team and they still have great technique in midfield and the best centre-forward in the world in Didier Drogba. This is the key game in the group for us.”
Besides the controversy revolving around Mourinho, Chelsea have other issues to worry about.
For instance, as mentioned before, Blues captain John Terry fractured his cheekbone at the weekend, requiring surgery.
A protective mask is being fitted and there’s hope he can play Wednesday at the Mestalla. My money’s on his being out there, gutting it out like the warrior that he is.
Also, last season’s killer Michael Essien isn’t recovered from injury and could miss the matchup.
Didier Drogba isn’t happy over the Portuguese gaffer’s sacking, Andrei Shevchenko isn’t firing on all cylinders and Frank Lampard might also miss the game with a knock.
Ok, sounds good. But we’re not in the best shape either.
Santiago Cañizares is battling to be fit in time for the game, while Manuel Fernandes and Carlos Marchena also remain doubtful. ‘El Dragon’ Cañizares has a strain in his leg that saw him miss the weekend victory.
Marchena did not train at all after suffering from pains in his neck having been hit in the face by the ball during the Recreativo Huelva match on the weekend and it remains to be seen if he will be fit to face the Blues.
Fernandes did not train either as he still has bruising on his legs and will be given until the last moment to decide whether he feels ready to play.
Yikes! Lots of injuries!
But there’s some good news. Vicente reported back to Valencia’s training ground Paterna after spending time in Madrid as he aims to shake off the problems that have plagued him for several months.
The Spain international winger was fined for criticizing the club’s doctors, but was still allowed to see specialists in the Spanish capital.
Still, don’t expect to see him for some time.
So, what do we make of this match?
It’s an exciting duel between two hard-nosed teams. Both have something to prove: Chelsea that their slide is over, Valencia that their good run is for real.
I’ll let John Rowlands of goal.com have the last few words here. Take it away, fella …
As much as [new coach Roman Abramovich's] appointment came in a hail of claims that Chelsea were going to play attacking football, doing so at the Mestalla could see the Blues fall into the Che trap. The hosts love to counter attack, often seeming far more comfortable away than at home when form is lacking. Valencia are on a roll now, while confidence and belief in Chelsea’s new project has clearly yet to be instigated in the players.
To win, both teams will have to deliver a performance better than anything they have displayed so far this season, but the extent of that required improvement is far greater for the visitors, while QQ Flores and his players have added motivation with revenge on their minds. Pressure on [Roman] looks set to increase.
Valencia 2 – 0 Chelsea
Sounds good to me. AMUNT!!!!!!

Cesar Be warned: Chelsea’s backs to the wall can be very dangerous… well I hope so lol lol as rich boy’s puppet is in charge.
Seriously - even in April no one gave us a chance and look waht happened. Essien will be there and so will Terry. Only Jose is missing.
there will be the same amount of Chelsea fans in the mestalla if not more and they will sing and cry there hearts out for the cause. At the moment it is a cause.
Cesar
I WAS THERE WHEN WE WERE SHIT
I’LL BE THERE WHEN WE ARE SHIT (again)!!!
Have a good game

Great post Cesar. You really did a lot of research to write this article. But, to me your to weary of underestimating chelsea. To be frank. VALENCIA IS GONNA KICK THE SH*T OUT OF CHELSEA. At home and away. Were are gonna kick them while there down and pour dirt on top of their grave. They dont stand a CHANCE. SILVA is gonna score again, hes amazing, and I dont think you can start VICENTE when he is fit again, ahead of a DAVID SILVA(some one wrote that in a post a few weeks back). You cant deny that this boy is coming into his own and playing great for the club and for his country. That Chelsea team is evil. I hate them.
Me and my boys used to play Winning 11(PES in Europe)
and he would always pick Chelsea b/c they would sign so many stars, could never win or try with a team of efficient role players, always the team thats stacked. And then chelsea almost took our star player away the last 2 years in David Villa. F**k CHELSEA.
Thats all. Other than that, I hate them.Posted from

well how does 2-1 sound for chelsea in our home? i couldn’t see the match but i heard we played well… not enuf i guess…. i addmitt valencia is not a big team. it is a second class team. it is under barca and real madrid and over the rest. it lyes in between the two levels. i hate tht and screw QQ. how humilating beating us 2wice in our home. and screw him for not buying defenders like all the clubs. all we have is Miguel and morretti screw whatever ppl think hes a joke! so is Albiol.

“El africano ha demostrado que es uno de los grandes delanteros del fútbol mundial y que casi en solitario puede ganar un partido ” as.com
it says “The African has shown that is one of the large forward of the world soccer and that almost alone can win a party. ”
and i say if we had 1st class defenders we wouldn’t be beatin by one player. respect to miguel in our defense and the rest are JOKE. sorry im sooo mad.

well cesar here you go, good performance, bad result
is this the improvement you wanted?
1:2 is unfair, but that’s exactly what almeria or valladolid could say few weeks ago

ARGHH!!!! But I won’t deny Chelsea their victory, Joe Cole was excellent today and Drogba is the best striker in the world… and we let Arizmendi onto the field, far less onto the bench and into the stadium to begin with.

Valencia was the better team overall but you can’t be upset with that result, did Quique really think Helguera was an appropriate replacement for Ayala? If we lived in a world without injuries Valencia would probably be the best team in Spain, but what shocking depth…when you rely on a Marchena-Albelda midfield to create and old man Baraja and Arizmendi to change the game around you know there is a problem.
Villa’s goal was pure class though.

Interesting point about Arizmendi - I remember him having a great game against Real last season for Depor, but is he really the answer against a team of Chelsea’s quality?

I trully hate Chelsea! Of all the FC’s in the world Chelsea is the only one I trully hate. We had our chances but in the end we lost and we really miss Ayala out there. Joaquin choked and Baraja should of done better. Villa of course was steller. Zigic is going to be a stud we just need to give him some more playing time. Overall we played a lot better than we have been.

the ref was shit… joe cole ws handball but he didn’t stop the game…and albiol is tooo tired to chase drogba…albiol should need more rest…
joaquin n silva threw many chances…joaquin shouldn’t dribble the ball too long…and bad heading from silva… he must take more heading lesson

albiol doesnt need rest.. albiol is not the class of defenders to stop a striker like drogba.. drogba needs a maldini or a canavaro. all our defenders are good when playing against Getafe or Sivilla if they r in thier best shape (our defenders).. but against teams like Chelsea or Man united and even Arsenal… they r not in tht level to really stop the world class strikers. i mean picture what C.ronalda would do to Moretti if we ever played against Man united. i think Moretti would fall flat on his face an cry. The only real class defender we have is miguel. letts just thank god shevchenko didnt play. hope we could buy a real defender and maybe buy Van der vaart in january.

The game was garbage all around. The first 30 minutes or so Valencia played okay. Just okay. After that, well, it was a dog’s breakfast. I don’t think either team deserved a win.
This, the Valencia 07/08 edition, is a collection of individuals and not a team. No unity, no harmony, no….well simply it relies on the talents of a small handful of individuals to save the team from what should be either a draw or a certain loss. Shame fernandes couldn’t play yesterday, as he might have given some semblance of a decent central midfielder, not that Marchena was bad, it’s just that Albelda was awful.
As for central defenders, I thought Albiol was okay/good. He held Drogba in check for most of the match, shouldn’t that be recognized? He seems to have put on a bit of muscle. helguera wasn’t bad either. The biggest problem that Valencia seems to have is that it’s midfield can’t work together or just flat out sucks. For this, I put the blame squarely on the shoulders of QSF.
Surely the clock must be ticking on Quique.

Cesar, for your next blog can you please write about how bad we miss Ayala. He’s one player I can’t seem to live without. Albiol is not the player. He is simply badly beat by Drogba.

i dont think that we played that poorly.. Chelsea is a far supperior team and we held them fairly well till Drogba broke through near the end. But Valencia seem to shine for the first 20 minutes of all our games then try their best not to lose for the rest of the game.
Like ive always said its too bad we have no central playmaker like Riquelme. We need some fast paced attacking midfielders .. all we do is play wings. Gee thats not gonna be predictable or anything.
