Valencia … Oh Valencia …
By: Cesar | December 1st, 2008
Yesterday’s 3-2 win against Real Betis is the type of game champions need to win.
And win we did, although in usual nervy fashion.
We scored two goals in the first 20 minutes to take seeming command of the match only to watch it slip away. Juanma pulled a goal back for the Sevilla side 11 minutes after the break and Achille Emana equalized from the penalty spot not long after.
With Carlos Marchena sent off for the foul that led to the penalty, all looked bleak for Los Che.
But old geezer Ruben Baraja scored his first league goal in more than a year (October 20, 2007 against Deportivo to be exact) off a wonderful header past Betis ‘keeper Castro to save us. Our boys are firmly entrenched in third place in Spain, five points behind next week’s opponents, FC Barcelona.
Betis were a tough out, tougher than I imagined. They came into this match as very much a team in form, having won five of their last six league matches. Still, who imagined we’d have such a rough time against the Andalucians?
Nevertheless, 3 points is 3 points. Bring on the leaders!!
After the match, coach Unai Emery seemed upset that we coughed up a two-goal lead.
“We should have maintained our first half form for longer. We have to be more consistent and we should have kept it going for longer,” he told reporters.
“We had a good first half and scored twice and there were chances to add to that, but in the second half they were better and drew level.”
“They deserve a lot of credit because they showed that they do have a good team,” he added.
I guess … If you’re interested, here are goal.com’s player ratings for the match.
The one bit of bad news is the injury to Edu, who looked on the verge of tears while leaving the pitch. He looked absolutely spectacular the first 20 minutes of the match. It’s a shame the Brazilian midfielder can’t stay healthy. It didn’t look like he injured his knee this time around. Since no one was around him when he pulled up lame, I’m guessing it was a muscle pull.
I’m not sure of the extent of the injury. Let’s hope he comes back soon … I really feel for the oft-injured Edu.
Transitioning from the bad Edu news to some good news … Silva is back!
Well, sort of … he practiced with the squad for the first time since his ankle operation today. Great to see the diminutive Silva on the road to recovery. It’ll be great to have him back in the rotation in a few weeks.
While the re-incorporation of Silva will be like a winter transfer, there’s more coming.
Valencia formally introduced Brazilian teenager Thiago Carleto as their new wingback.

“I am very happy to be able to play here. It is a dream to play in Spain and with a big team, with big players,” said Carleto, who left Santos to sign a six-year deal with Valencia. “I am very disciplined, I look to do what the coach asks me. I have a special feature God gave me: I kick very well. And I look for being better every day. I’m a good tactical player either at the defense and at the attack, really good.”
Can’t say he’s lacking in confidence, eh?
The ‘new’ Roberto Carlos bristles at comparisons with the big-thighed ex-Madridista …
“I’m so happy for being compared with him, but I just want to be Thiago Carleto and have a career as successful as his,” he commented.
Valencia gave no financial details, but sports daily AS reported that the transfer fee for the 19-year-old, who was also being chased by Real Madrid, Chelsea and Manchester United, was around $2 million.
But that’s not all …
According to news reports, we’re leading the race to sign Brazilian starlet Keirrison.
Barcelona, Real Madrid, Liverpool and Palermo have also been tracking the 19-year old striker, but we’re said to be top of the pile after tabling a €12 million bid.
Resurgent Premier League side Liverpool are said to be hot on the heels of us. They’ve faxed a lesser bid, but are offering the player himself a more substantial contract.
Despite the interest from the English side though the Coritiba sports director, Paulo Roberto Jamelli, told Spanish soil rag AS that he thinks his man would be better suited to Spain … and hopefully us …
“I have played in the Spanish league and I know Keirrison,” he declared.
“I have no doubt that he would succeed in Spain because there are a lot of midfielders providing the balls, like Guti and [Iván] de la Peña. If he does end up at Real Madrid he will score lots of goals with the creativity of Guti.”
The Brazilian league doesn’t end till December 7, so more developments are expected after that date. Real Madrid supremo Ramón Calderón recently revealed that Los Merengues will be signing two young players this winter, and speculation is rife that Keirrison will be one of them.
We’ll see what happens. It’s encouraging, nonetheless.
Still, with the news that we were denied credit from Valencian bank Bancaja, how are we affording these players? Is there something I’m missing here?
More news: We’ll be playing Racing Santander in the Copa Del Rey round of 16.
You’ll remember that Santander embarrassed us at the Mestalla a few weeks back, courtesy of a Mohammed Tchité hat trick. Let’s see if we can exact some revenge.
Next game? A UEFA Cup match against Belgian side Club Brugge.
This would be an opportune time to play the likes of Zigic, Viana and Curro Torres.
Why? Because we’re due this coming Saturday at a certain stadium named Nou Camp to play a certain club named FC Barcelona who happen to be leading the Spanish league …
Let me start off the week by begging and pleading for ANYONE in the tri-state area … or the United States … or the world … to get to New York City and Nevada’s Smiths in Manhattan to watch the game with me …
I DO NOT want to be alone surrounded by 11,000 Barca supporters. Especially when we beat them …
So I hope to see you there come Saturday …

Btw, Ajax pres says there is no transfer at all, not even negotiation. They tried to do the same with Sneijder 2 years back and it didnt work. So as far as Ajax says, there is only one Huntelaar, and he is staying in Amsterdam.
@ Alessandra
as a Dutchman i do like to see them there, it would mean our national teams forward players would even play better together in our national team. Too bad they’re at such a shitty club…Posted from

In a telephone interview with Globoesporte (I have no idea who they are) earlier today Kerrision stated that he knows nothing about the interest of Real Madrid and no one has contacted him or his agent. He only states that he got an offer from Valencia and he is interested in it and will discuss it with his agent. He also thinks highly of our club.
Hope this leads to something!http://es.eurosport.yahoo.com/01122008/47/liga-oferta-interesante-valencia-keirrison.html

RM is very very Dutch these days: Ruud, Sneijer, Drenthe, Van der Vaart… All they need is a few more and they have the entire national team.

Does anyone have any updates on Alexis injury or if we tried to appeal against Marchena’s red?

@ Kuku : There is no news about Valencia appealing Marchena’s red card yet (which is quite suprising as we have tried to appeal cards on lesser things last season). I think Valencia should have at least given it a shot as they have every right to do so.
As for Alexis, it seems that the medical staff have their fingers crossed about him. He didnt train with the rest of the group today and they will observe him in the next few days to see if he can play on Saturday. There are no promises on him being ready and they may have to wait until the last minute to make a decision. I just hope the medical staff remember that it is only 3 points here and we cant afford to lose Alexis for longer by aggravating the injury.
If he isnt ready then it would be Albiol - Helguera/Maduro/Morretti.As for Moretti and Mata, they seem to be doing OK and have recovered from their ailments.

does anyone know if valencia have a basketball team like real madrid?
also if real madrid bought the entire dutch nacional team that would be cool but wouldnt they need to change their name, because of the royal part

@Fayez: I’m with you, the only Valencia fans I know are here in California, and we are still incredibly sparse compared to the Barca fans that developed here because of “part man/part horse” Ronaldinho.
@bob: After looking around for a while, I’m pretty sure Valencia is a strictly football club. I don’t see any trace of basketball anywhere.
And might I just add on my own behalf…I am amped for Carleto…pure, straight AMPED. We need some young blood.
I can’t tell if Baraja is running on actual spry-ness (to make up my own word) or if he’s scoring on senility.

Since Real Madrid likes Dutch so much, they should buy Maduro!

@ bob and DJ
Valencia is just and only football. Btw there is a pro basketball team in Valencia, called Pamesa Valencia…
lol @ half man / half horse btw
@ Ali,
don’t worry, i am sure somebody will help us out. Even an idiot can look at hour financials and can see that if they loan us the money now, they would get it back within a month (in 2009 that is hehe)!Posted from

well I watched the Seville -Barca game and E’to got a yellow card..his fifth in this season so he will not play. As for the game I was really surprised how we threw the lead and placed ourselves into trouble. Also the referee sucked with that red card since there were enough players and he was giving a penalty.

I’m not too worried about our financial situation. As Jonnie Walker said, we can pay back the money in a matter of months. Especially if we qualify for the CL next year.
CL + New Sponsorship + New Stadium = $$$$

and the reports are from marca and der english spoksemen goal..is der any authentic report on this?like valencian newspapers or the official website..we all know we have financial trouble but the transfer window is approaching and i sense yellow journalism again by marca and co..

I am worried about the reports in marca and GOAL!!!.
I know these people are trying to put us down because they are starting to get afraid of us…
But i am still deeply troubled by the current situation.even if we can payback all the money soon!! We shouldn be in this situation!!!Hope we get through this unscathed as after so many years there is a sense of serenity ,Hope soriano and CO takes us out safely and continue the good work..As for soler and his predecessors!! I would like to ask them never again to call themselves valencianistas!!..We will fight this also and come through!!!.Marchena has said Wages are secondary ,only thing that matters is the stability of our club!!!Thats a captain speak, eventhough i dont like his football skills. And i purely hate the Barca and real fans who are making fun of our situation,They would love us to sell them our stars and see us rot as they feel threatened!!!

@Kooshin: Eto’o news is good esp. given that our defense will be a makeshift one.
I somehow feel Maduro will be better than Helguera. Moretti should be at LB.

On another note, its hard to know the true situation based on tabloid journalism but buying a new player and being involved in talks with Keirrison doesnt sound like a club being in danger of bankruptcy to me…:)

We should really all stop reading Goal.com
The only reason why I’m checking their site is because they translate interviews from Spanish (I hope they don’t fuck up the translations and they do all the rest!)Good point, Kuku, why buy Carleto for 2M and offer 12M for Keirrison if the club is on the verge of bankruptcy?!?

To be honest I dont think the Marca or the goal.com article should concern us but there is something very worrying in all of this in what Marchena said.
In his interview today (you can read about it on http://www.superdeporte.es) he stated that the players know nothing about the situation and are “worried” and only know “from the mass media” as no one in the “club talked to them about it”. That is VERY worrying to me and a cause of concern. The whole situation would hurt the players’ morale and it is evident from what Marchena said that they are in the dark about this as much as we are.
I really hope the president talks to them in the next couple of days and explains the situation, the same kind of talk occured when Leeds got bankrupt, this is serious stuff and Soriano has to step up and explain matters, not to us fans as we are secondary in this, but to the players.Posted from

Cesar, Paddy here from the Depor Offside. Would you be interested in co-writing a La Liga preview, in the style of Wayne and Rob’s for the EPL, if I could get is set up?

Response from our Club to the irresponsible act from Marca and GOAL.com
The Valencia Football Club wishes to express to all its shareholders and supporters, before the alarming news published in some ways, the following points:

2 .- The Board of Directors, with its chairman at the helm, wants to convey serenity and tranquility to the entire Valencian flatly denying that Valencia is in bankruptcy, a term that has been used irresponsibly.
3 .- The Valencia Football Club wishes to express its confidence in financial institutions which, to date, have shown their support for our great club and, hence, our hundreds of thousands of fans.
4 .- The club requires responsibility and rigor to analyze the economic situation of our institution, the Valencia reserves the right to exercise legal action necessary.
5 .- The Valencia Football Club asking for the union of all the Valencian to maintain the excellent progress of the first sports team, the fruit of stability and hard work of staff and the coaching staff.
