Valencia is Spain

By: Cesar | March 23rd, 2007

Catalunyans like to say that ‘Catalunya is not Spain’.

That may or may not be true, but for the upcoming Euro 2008 qualification games, Valencia certainly is Spain.

Valencia CF tops the charts with 6 players on the Spanish national squad for qualifiers against Denmark on Saturday & Iceland on Wednesday.

They are: D Carlos Marchena, MF David Albelda, MF David Silva, S Fernando Morientes, S Michel Angel Angulo & S David Villa.

Of the 6, Angulo will likely start the game sitting bench. Spain coach Luis Aragones has already confirmed the strike force of Villa and Morientes will start the match, looking for their natural chemistry to click and lead Spain to victory.
David Villa
Spain can ill afford a hiccup. They are languishing in fifth place in Group F, nine points behind leaders Sweden and another slip-up could cost them a place at next year’s Euros in Austria and Switzerland.

As Atletico Madrid striker Fernando Torres puts it, ‘We need to get six points out of these two matches. We can’t afford to make any more mistakes and must win both games if we want to avoid making things really difficult for ourselves.

‘There is no room for error because losing or drawing will be very dangerous.’

I’m not sure if now is the best time to build the national squad around Valencia. Los Che are languishing a bit in La Liga, losing last week to Racing Santander and dropping points against Osasuna and cellar-dwellers Gimnastic in recent weeks.

Also, David Villa’s in one of the worst scoring droughts of his career, going almost a month without putting the bisquit in the basket.

They better put some goals past Denmark & Iceland. Or else …

Hi mate! Interesting read and congratulations on your new blog!

This is the perfect chance for David Villa to hit the back of the net.

He has two upcoming qualifiers and this is his chance to get some goal scoring confidence.

Hopefully he’ll bring it back with him to la liga so we can push for a top CL spot.

    Amunt Baby!
