Valencia – Espanyol

By: Javier | January 2nd, 2011

Valencia-vs-EspanyolEspanyol coach Mauricio Pochettino hopes his side can return to the top four with a win at fellow Champions League hopefuls Valencia.

Espanyol dropped to fifth before the winter break following back-to-back defeats against Athletic Bilbao and Barcelona, but the Catalan side are level on points with fourth-placed Valencia after 16 rounds of the championship and a win at the Mestalla will see Pochettino’s men return to the Champions League places.

“We have to keep growing and the stage (Mestalla) is a good one for us to show we can stay near the top of the table,” the Argentinian coach said today.

“The match is a challenge for us because we are determined to start 2011 on the front foot.”

normalAnd even though there is still over half the season left, defender Juan Forlin admits he and his team-mates are dreaming of Europe.

“Europe is something we are all excited about,” he said. “The idea is to return to Barcelona with a win. It will be a special game and a big challenge for us.”

Victor Ruiz is suspended for Espanyol, while Ivan de la Pena, Felipe Mattioni and Ernesto Galan all remain sidelined.

Valencia climbed above Espanyol in the table thanks to a 2-1 win at Real Sociedad before the winter break.

And winger Vicente, who is hoping to sign a new deal with the club, admits a return to the Champions League – in which Valencia have reached the last 16 this season – is the aim for his side.

“We’ll see what happens with my contract later, but our first priority is to get into the Champions League again,” he said.

Vicente Guaita looks set to continue in goal tomorrow as first-choice Cesar struggles to recover from a knee problem.

As always i will be at the match cheering on the team. Any of you readers that live in Valencia should get in touch with me and we can have drinks before matches.

AMUNT VALENCIA !

    @Jose
Same here, but I thought that this is a problem only for viewers outside of Spain. At the moment the clash of titans Barca vs Levante is on TV in Macedonia and they will not show Valencia Espanyol, WTF?!? But I guess Gil Scott-Heron was right afterall, the revolution will not be televised :)

If you live in the U.S. you have to get espn deportes to watch every Valencia game. Regular espn shows the crappy rugby epl and goltv is in love with barca and real.

Also in the US, ESPN3 (formerly 360) plays most of Valencia’s games via the Deportes feed. It’s all up to whether or not your ISP carries ESPN3. Luckily, I’m able to watch the stream through XBOX Live who have added ESPN3 to their online services.

Another win in the last minute….we havent been convincing lately and there were some very terrible subs and tactical decisions by Emery. Clearly Maduro isnt the midfielder we need and both Tino Costa and Banega have to be fit or we are doomed.

Yeah taking off Joaquin instead of Pablo and bringing on Bruno and Banega were pretty crappy moves.

Glad we won. We needed it

I agree there Javier, Joaquin was supplying the goal scoring chances, our first goal came from his delivery into the box from a corner. Incredible that he was taken off, like Emery has a death wish.
The red card was absurd, as I saw it, I would not even rate it a foul. The player CHICA had his arm round Aduriz who shoved it away. Chica fell to the ground apparently in agony and had spray put on his right wrist which to my mind was not even in the incident. Chica is Spanish for ‘girl’ which is a good name for him.

I find it incredible that more blogs and forums are not as pleasant as this one. Often times when I land on a website page the articles and other content is so deficient that I move on without delay. That is not the case here. Thanks so much.
