Valencia Cruise On
By: Cesar | May 7th, 2007
No, I didn’t see the game. The madness of my life prevented me from enjoying the late dramatics of Silva’s goal.
But I smiled in glee when the text message hit my phone that we’d won, 2-1.
How nice to know we’re on the road to Europe, sliding gracefully into the Champions League.
Hugo Viana opened the scoring for our boys in the 39th minute with a superb volley, while David Silva grabbed the winner after Sebastian Taborda had pulled Deportivo level.
So who’s next?
Old friend, old Pibe Pablo Aimar. More on him later …
But for now, I enjoy the little I can take from this match. I didn’t see it, I’ve hardly had the time to read anything about it. All I know is that we’re in the driver’s seat, our destiny belongs to us.
And isn’t that a good place to be?
A win at the expense of Aimar’s Zaragoza at the Mestalla this weekend will go a long way towards ensuring qualification for next season’s Champions League.
With Barcelona’s boring victory (hey, that’s what MARCA said … and you know they never lie) over Real Sociedad, we lie 6 points behind, with 5 left to play.
So forget about the title. 2nd place anyone?
*****
In my haste to put an update up, I forgot the compelling story of old friend Miroslav Djukic’s (pictured above) penalty miss against Valencia when he played for Deportivo in the early ’90’s. To quote reader Abraxas:
‘No, the rivalry between Depor and Valencia began on last game of the 93-94, on the very last minute, with “Djukic’s Penalty”. Deportivo needed the victory against Valencia for winning La Liga. The match was 0-0 when on minute 89 the referee there was a penalty against Valencia. Bebeto, the penalty shooter from Deportivo didn’t took the responsability. It was Djukic the only player that was brave enough to try to score. He didn’t. González, the Valencia goalkeeper, saved the shoot and celebrate it as winning something important (Valencia had nothing to loose or win at that game). It was said that Barcelona, the final winner of that liga, gave a lot of money to the Valencia players for a good result in that game. That was the beginning of their hate to us.’
Interesting story … anyone have more on this?

Haven’t hard much about that miss tbh Cesar. Anyway, found this site, looks good, Cesar you seem like a die hard Valencianista. I’m a huge fan from England, and this victory for us was huge in the CL context, because Real Zaragoza drew at home to Racing, its in our hands, and we will be playing CL football again next season, for a club like us its so important! Keep up the great blogs mate!

Just to add mate, we played pretty poor, overall the game was very dirty, La Liga at its worst. But we won and its what matters, and if we beat Zaragoza next week we’re there. We’ve never had a continous CL stretch (2000 and 2001 of course, 2002 N/A, 2003 There, 2004 N/A, 2005 There but we got knocked out early, 2006 N/A).
See its very sketchy? I want a continous stretch for our great club, and mate if you want register at http://www.soccerpulse.com/forum/index.php there’s a thriving valencian communiuty there where i post reguarly on all things los che, you’ll like it. I’ll see you there hopefully

I was happy to see Hugo Viana score. I always worry that he’ll be offloaded, especially since he’s not always the most impressive of players.

I like Hugo Viana, he’s kind of weak and inconsistent, but Valencia can’t really afford to let go of any central creative players right now…Central midfielders should be your priority this summer, especially if Villa stays.
I’m glad to see Valencia is looking to take the last CL spot. You guys are probably our second biggest rivals behind Madrid (Maybe third behind Espanyol, the problem is they hate us more than we hate them), but I still support you in the CL, for the sake of the best league in the world. I like the current Zaragoza team but I think Valencia has more to offer Europe.
I’m going to be in New York most of the summer, maybe I should check out one of these Spanish bars you talk about, outside of Spanish communities its hard to find fans of Spanish teams that aren’t Barca and Madrid.

A bit cant believe that Valencia can score 2 away goals away!
But this weekend really important, hope that Valencia can snatch a victory…PS: Is that some old picture? I saw the sponsor is Terra Mitra, supposed to be Telefonica or Toyota?

2 away goals and the second one scored after we were leveled. We weren’t able to get infront of the opposition much this season. Good win for Valencia.
I like Aimar’s new team but not when he and his new pals are up against his old team. So let’s get another 3 points this weekend.
Amunt Valencianista around the world!
