Valencia-Barca = Please Win! Please!
By: Cesar | April 24th, 2009
Tomorrow’s the big day.
Valencia-Barcelona at the Mestalla and this one’s more than a game.
There are Spanish championship implications for Barca.
There are Champions League implications for us.
There’s the race to the Pichichi between strikers David Villa and Samuel Eto’o and there’s going to be a raucous, rambunctious crowd filling the Mestalla looking to cheer their hearts out.
Add all of them up and they make for a delicious football recipe.
We’ve won five games in a row, which should fill us with confidence when we step onto the pitch with the league leaders and current Champions League semifinalists.
We’re one of the hotter teams in Spain, but that won’t matter come Saturday evening.
Barcelona have an all-star team at their disposal. Henry, Iniesta, Xavi, Eto’o, Marquez, Yaya, Alves, Messi, etc etc etc … I could go on and on. They even have an All-Star manager, the well-dressed Pep Guardiola.
One ingredient that could be to our advantage is that the Catalan giants play Chelsea on Tuesday in Europe, then come back to face Real Madrid in the annual slugfest/war at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Should Dani Alves, Yaya, Sergi Busquets, Xavi or Eto’o be booked, they’re out of next weekend’s Classico. I doubt this means much, but you never know.
Our Beloved are a bit out of sorts. Joaquin suffered a right ankle knock against former club Real Betis on Wednesday and will be sidelined for up to two weeks. David Albelda twisted ligaments in his left ankle during training and is expected to be out for two to three weeks.
This could create problems in the midfield. Albelda was the glue (supposedly) between the defense and the midfield. Carlos Marchena will probably fill that role, so expect either a red card or the likes of Messi to run rampant at our central defense.
Our defense, which is always out of sorts, will be back to full strength with big-boned Miguel back from suspension and Emiliano Moretti back from injury. The middle will probably be occupied by Alexis and Albiol, who will have to be on their A-Game with Marchena sitting in front of them.
The absence of Joaquin means the appearance of Pablo Hernandez, who’s on very good form the past few weeks.
I worry whether our midfield can contain Messi, Eto’o, etc. enough to maintain a consistent attack. I’ve no worries about the David’s (Villa and Silva) or Mata and Pablo. What I’m concerned about is Marchena and Baraja. Should Ruben play, he needs to do more than run in circles and take long distance shots. Barca’s offense is no joke.
Should we start running in circles after their offense, the game will be over in a matter of minutes. If we can apply consistent pressure on their defense, pass the ball around the field and deliver strong tackles and smart defending when they’re in our zone, we’ll do just fine.
What does goal.com think?
Valencia may have had some good results recently, but some of them have owed a great deal to good fortune and it is unlikely that they will be so lucky against a Barcelona team that know the importance of a win in this encounter.
Valencia 1 – 2 Barcelona
Whatever.
I’m going to go out on a limb and say it’ll be a nerve-wracking 3-2 Valencia victory in front of a boisterous crowd. A Villa goal here, a bumbling Victor Valdes save attempt there and Valencia will send the crowd home happy.
Why not? I’ve seen it before. I see no reason why our lads can’t do it again.
A victory here would be sweet. Should Real Madrid beat Sevilla on Sunday, we’d move into third place. And the title race would heat up, as Madrid would be a mere three points from the leaders with Barca visiting Madrid next weekend.
You want spice? You got it.
C’mon Valencia! Do it!!! AMUNT!
If you’re in the New York City area, join me at Nevada Smith’s for the match at 4pm. If not, sing this song and enjoy the match.

@ ADIMENTE. Banega said he wants to stay at Atletico and he also implied that Atletico was a “big club” and that Valencia wasn’t. We should just sell him.
Aaron is on a 2 year loan. That means he will spend next season on loan at Rangers.
Yea, Edu gets hurt a lot, but he was fit for the Barca match and played the week before. Edu should have come on, not Michel.
With Maduro, why convert him? We have Albiol and Alexis. Hopefully Marchena will be sold and we can buy someone consistent and who doesn’t always get yellow and red cards. Maduro can be a backup DM or CB. Let him play wherever.

@ ADIMENTE. I forgot. There have been rumors that David Albelda will be released in the summer.
Also, Manuel Fernandes has said this year that he wants to go back to England, but he didn’t say when. He said he wants to stay at Valencia, for now…
Also, Joaquin said after the Sevilla match a couple weeks ago that if he wasn’t a starter at Valencia, he would want to leave. With his shocking form recently (and child like behavior) and Pablo’ excellent form, I bet Joaquin will be sold in the summer.

I think Juaquin jumped in the FIRST PLACE of PLAYERS TO BE SOLD IN SUMMER !

Banega said whatever it takes to try and secure a move to Atletico. Given that they’ve given him some kind of indication that they want him (by loaning him) and Valencia have done everything but sell him, it was obviously his best bet in the short term to do/say whatever it takes to make the move permanent. I wouldnt be surprised if he also said he was a boyhood Atletico Madrid fan, just to improve his chances on the short term. Its what footballers do to endear themselves to their current club/fans. Besides, who was it that said that Valencia is no longer a “big club” due to its financial constraints a few months ago? Was it Canizares? Perhaps Banega meant it in the same way or the quotes were out of context. We dont really know. What we do know is that he’s ridiculously talented. Talented enough to be the star of your midfield for the next 8 years if the situation is sorted out properly. And if it isnt, it’ll instead be 8 years of wishing it was. Because he’s going to be top class. And he’s going to play against you often if he stays in the same league, playing for a champions league place rival.
-
Its a similar situation to the one Manchester United find themselves in with Giuseppe Rossi. We have some kind of clause to buy him back – either a set fee or more likely just a first refusal on him. He’s a real talent and at some point in the future he’s going to be in the very top bracket of strikers. So either we sign him and get him back and he does a wonderful job for us, or we never sign him back and he’ll go to play for one of the biggest clubs in europe and end up playing against us several times in the champions league, probably knocking us out at some point. Some things are just written that way.Posted from

@ LILLO. If Banega is so talented, how come Atletico have not said they will make the loan a permanent transfer? Banega has admitted that he has heard nothing from the management and that he has been so shit this year that he wouldn’t be suprised if Atletico declined the option…

Have you actually watched Atletico when he’s played? He’s had other interviews where its been said that Atletico are clearly a much better side when he’s on the pitch. From the 5-6 games I’ve caught with him playing thats definately true. I havent read anything about Atletico saying they wont buy him, just that Banega himself thinks they wont buy him – which isnt the same thing. Atletico have rotated him and Camacho with the senior players, none of them really stay in the side except Raul and bizarrely he’s not one of their most talented central midfielders. More of an all rounder, just a decent player. But they always bring Banega on when they need a goal because he’s their orcehstrator from central midfield. He picks the passes that can get them back into the match. He was also very good against Barcelona when Atletico beat them.

@ LILLO. Is that why Banega has 1 goal and 0 assists? He has more cards than that, 3 yellow, 2 red.

Milan, do they ever learn? Morientes is an improvment on Shevchenko though. LOL Sheva LOL What the hell happened to him…

Albelda Baraja Zigic HugoViana Buttele NachoGonzales delHorno Moretti Joaquin Miguel, SELL THEM ALL
Bring me Negredo, Emana, Sunny, Banega, and some GREAT defenders!!!
I think Banega like Pathetico because there r a lot of argentinians…

@ PINTO. Yea, that is basically what Banega said.
Albelda and Viana will probably be released, like Helguera and Hildebrand.
Emery will probably sell Zigic so he can buy former player Negredo.
Buttele and Nacho. rubbish…
Del Horno will be back. He had an option in his contract for next year, and he activated it, so he will be back for sure.
Moretti and Baraja will probably be back, depending on how Carleto develops and if we bring in any CM.
Joaquin I think will go. He said 2 weeks ago if he doesn’t start, he wants to leave. Miguel, don’t know. I read in Superdeporte today that Javier Gomez and Emery chatted this weekend. Emery wants another right back, Gomez was noncommital. Superdeporte story http://www.superdeporte.es/secciones/noticia.jsp?pRef=2009042700_2_59832__Valencia-Javier-Gomez-reune-Unai
Emana, we don’t need him. We have enough attacking players. Maybe a right midfielder to back up Pablo. Pedro Leon from Valladolid has been rumored for quite a while. Fernando also likes Juanfran from Osasuna http://loco4losche.com/blogweb/index.php?/archives/6-Juanfran-to-Mestalla-in-the-summer.html

A central midfielder doesnt always get a direct assist for every goal they are involved in making or every good chance they contribute to. Its much more important for a central midfielder to show good general play, keeping the ball moving, giving the ball to the danger players and starting moves off. Spreading the play onto the wingers, who then cross and a goal is scored. Of course the winger then gets the assist, not the central midfielder who found him with an even better pass. When Banega is played he’s the best Atletico have at doing that, by a mile. He plays the Xavi role for them and its a fact that Atletico trust him to come on when they are chasing a goal because of these qualities.

I think Banega is very talented, he has the potential to be an amazing central midfielder, Xavi-esk…having said that he needs to be shown that the coach believes in him, he seems like one of those players you need to put an arm around etc….Sadly we did not do that we loaned him out straight away and gave Athletico a buy clause too, that just shows Banega that Valencia really have no intention of keeping him, can you blame him for not anting to come back we sent him all the wrong signals. Look at our central midfeild, he is better than every single one of them excluding Fernandes, those two would have been a great partnetship this season. Even with a rubbish CM selection like we have we still loaned him out….what is he meant to think?

So i agree with Lillo and i think we potentially have let a worldclass player slip through our figners

Exactly. We treated him like shit. Do you think he wants to come back and play for us? No. He will bitch and moan until he gets a transfer somewhere else. It’s like with Zigic. Read the link I posted above. He doesn’t say that he wants to leave Valencia permanently, but he doesn’t really sound enthusiastic about coming back either.
“I am happy in Spain but I need to play regularly and that has proven difficult at Valencia.” Pretty much what Banega has said. He is happy in SPAIN, not I am happy to return to Valencia. Ditto with Banega.

I predict these players will leave VCF in the summer:
Joaquin,Edu,Vianna,C.Torres,Moro,Baraja,Angulo,Zigic.
Players I hope will return to the Mestalla:
Lugano (underrated CB), Pedro Leon, Negredo or Bojan (loan), get Banega and Sunny back, Kameni ( we need a GK)

I haven’t seen Banega start much for Atletico either. Whats up with that? If he is Xavi good, surely he must start more?

Emerson, the former Roma and Madrid and AC Milan midfielder is now free agent.
Don’t want to snap him up? 33 years of age? Plenty of experience and strength.

@ Mohammed: what do you mean by “player who will return to Mestalla”? They haven’t played for us before. And can you please explain me is Pedro Leon good enough to play for us, especially if we release Joaquin?

for getting emerson we can get shevchenko..he is a clinical finisher…He is slow like morientes but is better than him..and will want to prove himself for once..so if emery can instill that desire in him,he will be great alongside villa

@ Nithin, he has the potential to be as good as Xavi only if he is guided rightly, he seems like one of those players who needs guidence and confidence installed in him.
To be honest you have not seen him much for Athletico, correct, that could be one of the reason why they are performing so poorly, i think he is better than Raul Garcia. Athletico have a below par manager (being kind), recently whenever has come on he has sparked Athletico, eg his goal vs Numancia which triggered the 3-0 thumping.
I hope we get him back, doubt it though…Napoli are interested in him tooPosted from

The only old players who might be worth looking at from Ac Milan would be Nesta – who is always injured, and Gattuso who is past his best but still capable of helping dominate a midfield better than Baraja and Albelda. In other words, best to look elsewhere… You can probably get better players in part-exchange for whoever you sell in the summer.

Onto Banega again – He plays a Xavi ROLE for Atletico in that they trust him to come on and be their playmaker. He’s the one who starts their attacks and finds Aguero, Forlan, Simao and Maxi with quality passes to their feet and into space. He wont always get an assist but he will help you keep the ball and spread it to where you can hurt the opposition the most. He also doesnt score regularly. In fact his goal a week ago was the first in his professional career. But, I believe it was against Barcelona, he had a great and I mean great effort from fully 35 yards which bent and almost went in, just tipped around the post. So he should be able to contribute a few goals too in the future. I’m not actually convinced Fernandes is a better player than Banega – he’s just more mature, more physical and further down the road so to speak in his career. Banega has more quality but isnt as experienced, possibly not as consistant and isnt as much of an athlete. I cant imagine he’d be playing a match with broken bones
Mind you, Argentines are usually tougher than they look and he’s of the same build as all the best ones. Small but stocky with a low centre of gravity.Posted from
