Valencia and Real Madrid
By: Cesar | June 18th, 2009
I found some of Florentino Perez’s comments today regarding David Villa and the tension between Real Madrid and Valencia interesting.
While the man’s arrogance knows no bounds, he’s adept at building winning football clubs. At least his checkbook is.
The Madrid president said that while Villa’s transfer was a question of time, there was no real antagonism between the two sides.
“Everything is being done in a friendly and cooperative way and we have good relations with Valencia. This isn’t a movie with a good and a bad side. It’s a case of rival and historic clubs who are going to fight for the league title. I don’t know if historically there’s been problems between the two clubs. With me there wasn’t a problem and of course now, there won’t be.”
I find these comments interesting.
Historically, there’s been tension between the two clubs.
Three cases in point, two having to do with transfers:
1 – The transfer saga of Pedja Mijatovic in 1996, who broke many Valencian hearts by going to the capital city. While Villa’s move wouldn’t be the same emotionally, this issue touched off many an incendiary note against Real Madrid.
The transfer was seen as a slap in the face by many. Mijatovic had a successful career at Madrid, helping Los Merengues win their first Champions League in 32 years by scoring the decisive goal against Juventus in the final.
But he was never forgiven for leaving the Mestalla. His first game back in Valencia was an emotional hurricane, with fans booing his every touch and insults being hurled in every direction.
Think Luis Figo going back to the Nou Camp with Madrid, sans the pig head.
VCF fans so hated Mijatovic they traveled across town to Levante’s Ciudad de Valencia stadium just to boo him when he closed out his career with our city rivals.
Not fun.
2 – The Champions League final in 2000. The first time two teams from the same country played each other for the European Cup. Unfortunately, we came out on the losing end of a 3-0 scoreline.
If anything, this was more personal, as Madrid fans taunted VCF fans for the loss. Obviously, it hurts to lose a final. It hurts even more when you lose to a team from your country.
The Valencia region has tons of transplanted Madridistas. I’m sure they got their kicks from defeating the local team for the European Cup.
3 – The transfer saga of captain Gaizka Mendieta was simple. He wanted to go to Real Madrid. We said no and sold him to Lazio, where he failed miserably before coming back to Spain with Barcelona.
The fact of the matter was that we simply wouldn’t sell him to Madrid, as much as he wanted to go. But the fact that he DID want to go to Madrid hurt VCF fans more. How could this guy, who had spent so much time with the team (8 years) want to go to them?
The rivalry has cooled some over the years from it’s white hot blaze in the early ’00’s.
I’m not sure the transfer of Villa to Madrid would necessarily liven up the rivalry. We need the money. They have it. Case closed.
I just find it odd that Perez would say we’ve had friendly relations. That’s not what I’ve seen in the time I’ve been a VCF fan.
It’s been heated, intense and passionate.
The games between the two clubs have also been fiery battles.
But I think every club in Spain ‘gets up’ to play the two big teams – Madrid and Barcelona. It’s always a special day when you play the best teams in the country. That’s how I feel, anyways.
Still, I’ll never forget the first Madrid-VCF match I saw at the Mestalla, watching a senior citizen throw a glass soda bottle at the Madrid bus as it made it’s way to the Mestalla, yelling ‘Hijos de puta.’
Or the pure venom I received from Madrid fans in Madrid when I wore my VCF kit around the city.
I’ll leave you with this one final anecdote that sort of tells you the entire story …
My friend’s friend had a baby. The family decided to call their child Raul. Not after the player Raul. They just liked the name.
Well, my friend went ballistic. All of her friends, who detested Real Madrid, went ballistic.
Long story short? They kindly asked the couple to change the name of the baby from Raul to something more proper, as they couldn’t take to a child with that name.
The couple changed the name.
The power of football!! Amunt!

Man, what a rollercoaster it is being a Valencia fan. I love it – most of the time. I guess all of our Villa jerseys may still be valid next season! Let’s calm down, however, as Kyle said, it’s a long transfer season.

This twist could mean one of the following scenarios :
1) It is just a method of increasing Villa’s bid from Madrid. We pretend that we dont want to sell so that arrogant Perez would just pay more.
2) Llorente and co. have changed their mind and want to sell Silva and/or Albiol instead.
3) Villa doesnt want to leave and has convinced his agent to state that he would not sign any offers.
4) We found a buyer for the old ground.

Good analysis, Fayez, I’m hoping the 3rd or 4th is true.

Can someone please translate that video for me?

it looks like it can’t be the first or your scenarios because the fans would protest like crazy if Llorente sold Villa now after openly and publically stating in a press confrence that “Vill is not for sale”…i hope it is the 4th one lol

@ Fayez: Villa’s agent stated that Valencia told him that they’re going to hear offers for him and that they told him that Villa won’t be here next season and now they’re saying this, he says that him and Villa don’t like this way of dealing with things.. i don’t know about Villa but this guys surely is not a happy guy at the moment! haha

Yeah, I can imagine that Villa and his d-bag agent are upset, not so much that he’s staying – at least I hope not – but that they wanted to sell him, but then changed their mind when they didn’t get enough money for him. But he’ll get over it by August, especially after some paella en la playa de la malvarrosa.

If Madrid had put up 50 million like they did in januari everyone would have been happy. They dont and its not really good to sell Villa for any cheaper.
However we prolly should have sold him cause we still got huge debts and we dont want to selloff our homegrown youth products do we? Cause thet’s what likely will happen now, lose abiol, pablo and mata wich is far worse.
And the only other way is going bankrupt as im quite sure they dont have a plan B. (i hope they do though, as long as i doesnt include even more debts…)

Of course Villa’s agent is not happy. Agents would LOVE if their players changed clubs every year, because they would cash in their percentage in every transfer. The worst thing for an agent is a loyal player who is commited to a single club for their whole career…

Has anybody seen the cover of Marca today? It has Villa with his dead down, with the headline: el dia que Villa lloro! These putas have to be stopped.

Bob, is your last name Hilton?
If not selling Villa is gonna make us bankrupt, I don’t see how another 25 mill is going to make all the difference.

They will still sell Villa for a lot of money. That doesn’t sound like “he won’t leave”, it sounds like “give us more money”.

I like this passage from Llorente’s press conference regarding keeping Villa:
“We can not tell the fans to buy our shares and then sell the player who is our flagship.”Yep, hope it stays that way. The summer is still young though.

Just a quick question guys. Are the shares being shared publicly? If so, if it’s a cheap and online. I’ll try and help out the club. Maybe just one share though, I’m not as rich as Cesar who’s most likely sipping his pina colada right now.

I definitely want to a buy a few shares, just gotta figure out how. In other news, so much for Marca’s truthful story about Villa crying about not going to Madrid:
“Al delantero valencianista se le pudo ver sonreΓr en el entrenamiento vespertino.”
Jajaja, jodate Florentino!

@Martinj, there’s one thing that nobody mentions on the Villa deal, and that’s Emery’s request of Negredo. The club told Emery they were going to sell Villa and that they had an offer from Madrid; Emery goes “great, as long as Negredo comes as part of the deal, I had him at Almeria, blah, blah, blah”
It’s not that Madrid weren’t willing to pay 50 mill for Villa, it’s that EMERY REQUESTED NEGREDO, so tell me if it makes financial sense, to pay 50 mill for Villa, and end up with nobody as a replacement??? or get 25-30 mill plus the player the manger wants????
It was a good deal, until the press started to get involved, presidents started appearing on TV, and all that nonsense
I’m happy if he ends up staying with you guys, because I wouldn’t want that to happen to my club with, say, Higuain, or someone emblematic to the club, and most importantly, the fans, so just for today, CONGRATULATIONS, and AMUNT!!!!
PS: Now, don’t sell him to farza
PS2: I also agree with what somebody said, that Villa MUST BE PISSED right now, and here’s why: the club told him they were going to sell him, BArcelona, Madrid, Chelsea, Man U made offers, then his agent starts talking with madrid (because that’s where he wanted to go, supposedly) to decide salaries, bonuses, etc, and then Valencia decide they’re not selling, leaving him and his agent in the middle of a power struggle between two egotistical presidents…; if I were Villa, I WOULD FORCE THE CLUB to sell me…
Take care gents

@thing is not that i dont want Negredo included, thing is i think madrid currently asks too much for Negredo.

Corey, It wasn’t a good deal simply because there wasn’t enough money to justify it. We aren’t desperate to sell Villa. We are desperate for a lot of money, to fight the debts. And that is the only reason Villa went up for sale.
If we don’t get enough money to make a difference, why would we sell the Europe’s best striker(IMO) and get Negredo instead?

Sorry, that was for the RM Cesar, not Corey. Early morning. No sleep.

@Nithin, I get your point, totally agree with you, I was just trying to illustrate the fact that Emery has come out of this transfer nonsense unscathed, but he’s the one that asked for Negredo as part of the deal, because he wanted a capable substitute for Villa, that’s all
Good luck to you guys, I really enjoy your forum, keep up the good work tocayo!!!!
