Valencia 1 Barca 1 Reactions
By: Cesar | February 28th, 2008
After the game ended 1-1 with Barca’s last-second goal in last night’s 1st-leg of the Copa Del Rey semifinals, I admit to feeling gutted.
I hurt. I was in emotional pain.
Around me, Barcelona fans were going nuts, jumping up and down, hi-fiving each other. The feeling was reminiscent of the pain I felt after Barcelona’s 3-2 hammering of Valencia in the last game of the 2001 season, a hat-trick by Rivaldo tearing my heart out, leaving us out of the next season’s Champions League after losing the tournament’s final a mere 4 days before.
But after thinking about the match and talking with people about it, I have to admit to feeling quite good about the game.
If we played with this intensity and passion all the time, we’d be leagues above where we are now.
True, Barcelona dominated huge swaths of the game. Valencia did little to batter the Barca goal, with one pure shot registered, the one that went in.
Still, the guys played well enough. In fact, two players in particular, Timo Hildebrand and Raul Albiol, played the games of their lives.
Albiol reminded me of departed friend Roberto Ayala last night, flying up for balls, being in the mix consistently, scampering around the field in search of loose balls.
And Hildebrand. What can I say? The guy saved Valencia too many times to count, outstanding saves being made throughout the game. He was unlucky to be beat in the waning seconds (courtesy of Eto’o’s hand. More on that later …), but no love lost. He looked amazing.
Accolades also go out to Ever Banega, who played an efficient game and Ivan Helguera, who I thought was influential in the middle of the defense.
What a great goal by our lads in the second half. Slick passing by David Silva and Arizmendi (ARIZMENDI??) and a wonder finish by David Villa. Here’s a video of the goal … stay tuned at the end of the clip to see how Samuel Eto’o used his hand to cost us the game. Not too happy about that one …
The two things about the game I didn’t like:
- We gave the ball away too easily. There was little in the way of offensive consistency from our boys. We stripped the ball from the Barca attackers, passed it up and couldn’t do anything with it. The ball fell to someone’s feet and often times was fumbled away. Valencia don’t have much in the way of ‘first touch’, do they?
- The defensive game plan irked me a little. Why not go for the away goal a little more aggressively? True, that could have exposed us at the back. And true, we did score a wonderful counter-attack goal. But we consistently sat back, waiting for Barca to hit us. To me, that’s a foolish way to play, especially with Barca’s offensive firepower. But our defenders were up to the task last night and did a wonderful job neutralizing the Catalan juggernaut …
Speaking about the last-second goal by Xavi: Did anyone else notice Eto’o’s hand-ball?
Anyone else see Barca get points like this week in, week out? I’m starting to wonder …
What? The ref didn’t see it? C’mon … I’m sick to death of the big teams in many footballing countries getting the benefit of the doubt every week. Something needs to be done about this. It happens way to often to ignore. Should there be video replay? Should there be another official on the field to act as a checks and balance for the other refs? I don’t know.
I just know the video shows an Eto’o handball that led to the play that cost us the win last night. And I’m upset about that.
Coach Ronald Koeman was pretty upset about it afterwards as well …
“We feel that there were too many mistakes made against us,” he complained.
“I am going away from this game feeling furious because Eto’o used his hand during the move for the equalizer. It is difficult to take conceding a last minute goal, but even more so if a hand was involved.”
Koeman admitted that he a draw would have been acceptable before the game, after stating that he felt his side had kept their hosts quiet before the break.
“Barcelona only had a couple of chances in the first half,” he explained. “I would have taken the draw before the game, but after seeing the handball it is different.”
The final result may be hard to swallow. But I tell you what: Yesterday’s Valencia team showed a grit, a passion and a game plan sorely lacking the past few months. They didn’t look like Valencia circa 2004, but they certainly played with an emotion not yet seen in the Koeman era.
I’m disappointed in the last second goal. But I’m buoyed by the great play, the nice David Villa goal and the near-upset at the Nou Camp.
On to the Mestalla. Let’s go to the final!! AMUNT!!!!

It was a handball, no doubt. Still, instead of standing there with hands in the air, play defense, people. Play until you hear a whistle. That’s fourth-grade stuff.
I haven’t seen Timo otherwise this year, but he’s got to be Germany’s No. 1, no?

Sorry to say, but this was the first time all season that I’ve rooted for Valencia. And the hand ball is infuriating. The only thing more maddening are the excuses the Barcelona fans are coming up with. Most claim not to see i, but one such glitter-eyed fan wen as far as to speculate at what the ref was thinking:
“[The ref] was shaking his finger ‘no,’ either he didnt see it, didnt think it hit his arm, or thought it was unintentional enough to play on.”
The first excuse (didn’t see it) is an admission that Eto’o used his hand and got away with it. The last (it was unintentional) is absurd. Hand balls that occur in the box and result in goals are never tolerated. But tell that to Zaragoza, who, as Cesar mentioned, are another team against which Barcelona recently was given a ‘handy’ result, after Henry used his arm to gain control of the ball, once again, IN THE BOX(!) and then scored a goal, the ref oblivious all the while, studying a little moth that happened to be fluttering about in the sky somewhere.
So this makes two results in three matches in which the result was tipped in Barcelona’s favor due to hand balls and poor officiating. I hope Valencia stomp them at the Mestalla. Even if, like the barcelona of late, they have to use their hands.

that handball was the slightest of touches. Its not some conspiracy, its just really hard to see. The reason you hear about big clubs getting all the breaks is because the big clubs are the ones being covered. No one cares if levante or bolton get a play or two in their favor because no one follows levante or bolton

Barring the result, this is just the kind of performance we needed. Incredible, just incredible.. Competent performances from Arizmendi and Helgeura, phenomenal keeping by Timo and the team showing heart that I’ve only seen this season against Zaragoza after we equalized. Onward to the final.. AMUNT!

Old apple, a slight touch is still a touch.
And those bottom teams deserve chances, too.
It may not be a conspiracy but it sure looks dodgy when it happens week in, week out. Watch … Valencia will be up 1-0 in the Mestalla and then, penalty to Henry! Just watch …Posted from

I admit it was a handball now that I see a replay but how the hell do you expect the referee to see that one clearly? You guys should stop complaining. Im surprised our Barca didnt win 2-0. You guys should be happy for the draw. Although I doubt you guys have a chance on the return leg.

Despite the result, Valencia played like a team again. We still have a chance in the return leg. I’m just pleased to see Valencia played like this. And never thought I would feel good about Arizmendi being in our beloved team. Villa scored a fantastic goal but Timo is MOM without a doubt and hope he played like this next week in Mestalla.
GRANDE TIMO!!!!!!!!
El Capitan Albiol, love that.
And EVER will be a big star in football.Posted from

Blatant handball. If the refs aren’t paying attention to these sort of things (re handballs), then they’re giving dodgy decisions in favour of Barcelona. Same old crap.

Same old shit
And I don’t think Joaquin was offside when he scored in the early minutes.
Barcelona fans over here in the UAE got balls when they say it’s Real who get the help. Recently things are going in their favor but they deny all that, or they come up with the usual ‘we deserved it’.
Now Barca will eat us alive in the Mestalla.

it was a very much improved valencia, hilderbrand in particular.i still think there is a lack of creativity in the team. but a draw fuera de casa against barca isnt bad.the big teams do get more breaks from refs but ill take barca getting them over puta madrid any day of the week, even if in this instance against us, this is what makes football so special, extra refs and replays would ruin the game for me.i also believe good and bad luck evens itself out over the course of a season.im now looking forward to the replay more than any game so far this season

I can’t truly weigh in on the Eto’o handball because I didn’t see it live and I haven’t seen any replays (at all, none; and I can’t see the ones above because they’re blocked by work). I didn’t have any idea there was even a shout for a handball until Marca and AS freaked about it, making me assume it wasn’t true.
If it wasn’t that blatant, is it so hard to understand that the ref could miss it? I don’t think so. That doesn’t excuse missing it, if it really happened, but to act like it’s impossible is just ignorant of the realities inherent in trusting the decisions to one person. Is it unfortunate that sometimes mistakes are made? Yes, I think so. Is it a conspiracy? Absolutely not.
To be honest, when big teams play each other (such as this contest), the refs are generally far better than they are when smaller clubs play each other. There is more media scrutiny, so better refs are used, generally speaking. I’ve seen atrocities committed during small team games (think Levante-Osasuna or similarly sized clubs) that would never, ever be tolerated in matches like Barca-Valencia. Yet only those clubs really care about them because they are, as old apple said, Levante and company.
Joaquin was not offside by much on his goal, but from what I saw, he was offside. He was off by about half a body, really. Certainly it wasn’t egregious and I’ve seen worse not called (if you conspiracy theorists would like me to go ahead and say it before you have a chance, I will: like one of Barca’s goals this year — a header, by Henry…name that game!). But it was called and it was called correctly. So whatever, that’s a moot point.
If the ref made a mistake (and according to Jake, he did, and I trust Jake), then that sucks. But you have a shot of beating us at home and you can’t really ask for more than that, right? It should be a great match, but you’ll need Timo to be on top of his game again to get by. Barca is going to go in guns blazing and Valencia better be ready to deal with it again.
Great game, glad I got to watch it and I am, to be honest, quite excited about the return leg.

Isaiah: Valencia could ask for the 1 goal lead their defense earned them, going in to Mestalla. And I don’t think this is a conspiracy, I think it’s just Barcelona taking advantage of undeserved goals, and ones that effect the result of the game in their favor. I don’t expect the goal to be retracted, I don’t deny that refs make mistakes, and indiscriminately so. I just think Barcelona fans should admit that two results in three games were earned unfairly, and that is nothing to be proud of.
And Jay, you act as if Barcelona paid Valencia a favor by not scoring goals. The fact of the matter is that the reason Barcelona didn’t score was that Valencia didn’t LET them. It’s not luck, it’s defense. Valencia earned through fair play a 1-0 scoreline in their favor.

Well, Valencia has to show that they have courage now, and they must do it in the Mestalla. I am confident about Valencia winning the return leg. The way I see it, theres about 20 more days for the match; which means that we have enough time to prepare and as we have noticed; Valencia keeps getting better and better. AMUNT

I’m disappointed for our draw guys, but I think The team will be able to qualify to Copa del Rey finals. Koeman has made good defence. Cesar said that Albiol was great , but if he could stop Etoo’ when he made his shot before the goal, we wouldn’t lose. Koeman must play an attacking game in Mestalla in order to win. And don’t forget , it’s Las Fallas in 19 march, so the staff will be in an excellent mood and the aficion will be able to atend the important match thanks to vacations!!!!!

f_barca, I suppose it depends on your definition of “deserved”. The way I saw it, Barcelona was unlucky not to have scored — not only because Timo and company were brilliant on defense, but also because they were lucky. There are times that luck does play a factor and that is just one of the things you have to deal with as a fan. I’m disappointed that we couldn’t overcome that and score anyway before the very end, but I’m glad that we finally did score in a lucky manner.
As for the Juanfran handball, having seen the replays of that game many times from as many angles as possible, I believe that Henry’s goal was legitimate and that Juanfran’s handball was questionable. Even if it was a handball, it was a harsh decision against Zaragoza. I didn’t see that match live, but from what I’ve heard and what I’ve seen in replays we, Barca, were lucky to be in that game anyway. Sort of like Valencia in this match.
You are certainly entitled to be proud of your defense, as they were pretty damned spectacular, and certainly you can be pissed that the Eto’o handball wasn’t called in your favor, forcing you to have to win the next match or draw 0-0, rather than simply drawing or winning; but it would be foolish, in my opinion, to act as if Barcelona was not far, far superior in the match. Perhaps you do not use the word “deserve” in the same way I do, but that’s how I use it, to suggest who was the better team on the night. Sometimes that result does not happen. Fortunately for all of us, both teams have another game to put all this to rest.
And as Nilton said, Valencia have been getting better and better recently, so the next game could be even better, especially since it’s in the Mestalla where I think Valencia will attack more, meaning the game should be more attractive and more free-flowing. You never know, though, because 0-0 is exactly what Valencia needs, since it would remove away goals from the equation altogether. Koeman is a decent coach (he hasn’t had the time to prove anything in either direction, good or bad), but we’ll see what kind of huevos he’s got when it comes to the return leg: big brass ones or tiny raisins. And define what it takes to have big brass ones as you will.

Hi, be fair, that was no handball. Etoo had an arm across his chest and he just managed to touch the ball with a finger,IT DID NOT CHANGE THE TRJECTORY OF THE BALL
WHICH IS WHAT COUNTS. Therefore it does not matter that the ref did not see it, there was nothing to see.
Hildebrand played the game of his life and if he carries on that way Valencia should not be losing too many points with future games. Barca had 29 shots towards the goal, maybe they did not all go Hildebrands way but enough did and with that sort of attack they at least deserved a draw.Valencia play Espanñol tonight who were beaten by 2nd division aspirants Deportivo so maybe we can come away with at least a couple of goals whittled off our -7, it is on Canal Nou 22.00 Spanish.. 2-0 to espanyol, a team who hasn’t won in weeks is pathetic. any team in slump? hey, just play valencia, they’ll make you look like the brazilian national team. i hate this damn season.

Hildebrand went from brilliant to letting in a super soft goal.. then a penalty.. valencia didnt seem in the game and our passing was piss poor.
God espanyol… why must we continue to suffer this manager Koeman

i hate how we always always always play from the wings! and villa is fuckin shirt!! why play on the wings? why not penetrate from the middle,,, they attack and then they they pass it to a wing and espanyols defence gets into place! and then its harder for our attck to penetrate them! everybdy defense well against Valencia,,, why because we give them every time they need to go back to where they need to be! and then we attack! We need van der vaaart.. and defence,, fuck,, we need a new team! a new valencia,, cuz by far not even 1 decent game we played this season!!! a game that you can look back and rememeber!!

What did we do against barcelona?? did we win? did we dominate the field? how many clear shots did we make? the only reason why we are so happy to draw with barca is due to our stinking level of play we r playing. so now a draw seems to us like a win!?!! a pure defence game seems something to brag about?.. you have a low standard Daniel.. and to tell you the truth… i was shoked by how the game finished 1-1 against barca.. we could have easily lost 4-1!! be serious and look at the facts.. i know the truth hurts but nothing Valenica did this season that a fan can be proud of!! look at how Atletico played barca! if we beat them like they did,, then that would be a game to remmeber!…. since when does esplanyol beat us twice in a season? since when do we draw with Recre? since when did we fall 9th and keep on losing.. hehe people say champions league our UEFA.. MY ASS!!! i would be happy if we reached 6th place with how my beloved team is playing! truth hurts and get real!

well said I must say. The truth does hurt but damn it is the truth. We have absolutly no cohesion anywhere on the pitch. Koeman.. well time will tell and it doesnt look good so far. One more year?

ali, i agree with your assessment of the game. for the love of god, attack, put two damn strikers on the field at once, not just in the closing minutes. i’ve never been so frustrated/disappointed with a team in my life. they have no consistency whatsoever. we were all over Recre’s goal last weekend, then played decent/got lucky against barca, and now we get smoked by a raul tamudo-less Espanyol? Give me a break. I hate to say it, but Champs league is out the window, barring a miracle. And David Villa, my beloved David Villa, is going to leave as soon as the whistle is blown after the last game against Atletico. i am going to start a fund and contribute my own money for a decent center back. anybody with me?
