Update on the David Albelda Calamity

By: Cesar | February 22nd, 2008

dia_malo_koeman_ha_afirmado.jpgRead my previous post from today to see what I think of this ridiculous chapter in Valencia CF history …

This, the latest from the news wires (ok, goal.com …) about the just-finished David Albelda court case …

So the judge basically told the two sides to come to an agreement. He’ll deliberate the facts of the case for up to a month, but told the sides to just kiss and make up; come to an agreement and get on with their lives.

Albelda insisted that this has always been his goal.

“”What we have sought from the beginning is dialogue,” he said.

“Why come to court? So that people see the truth. Neither the president nor [coach] Koeman gave me any reason for all this.

“Compensation? There was an economic issue, but the problem is that I’m not being allowed to go to any team.”

President Juan Soler, meanwhile, denied in front of the judge that Albelda had been kept apart from the first team, with the club’s lawyer accusing Albelda of wrongly feeling untouchable.

Soler went on to reaffirm that the reasons for dropping Albelda were purely sporting, and that he supported Koeman in all decisions “of technical character.”

With Koeman wishing to stamp out problems in the locker room – based on his December 17th statement – Soler claimed that initially it was to be a two-game ban, and one that later became permanent.

“The players were very important,” he admitted, “and huge dust was raised by the news, which is why we decided to offer our voice on the issue.

“It almost seemed like a dismissal – but it wasn’t.”

Ronald Koeman, meanwhile, testified through a translator.

The coach said that only sporting criteria applied, and that he’d rather give younger players a chance. (So WHY play Baraja??)

He added that he spent “about five minutes” explaining to Albelda why he wouldn’t play again, recommending to him that “it would be better” to seek a transfer. (So let him leave, you muppet!)

Curiously, Koeman stated that he wouldn’t recall the player, but drew the line at saying that Albelda would never again wear the Valencia shirt.

Answering questions from the plaintiff about a possible reappearance, Koeman said, “In football nobody knows how long situations last. In this sport, nothing is clear at all.”

What a waste of time … we’re the laughing stock of the football world.

Allegedly, Spurs and Chelsea were interested in Albelda, but Albelda wasn’t interested in going to either team because he was in the middle of proceedings against Valencia. That’s loyalty for you. I think you should get your facts straight before referring to Koeman as a ‘muppet’ who won’t let him leave. You’ve apparently got it completely backwards: Alabelda wouldn’t let himself leave. Here’s the superdeporte link:

    http://www.superdeporte.es/secciones/noticia.jsp?pRef=4984_2_21163__Albelda-ofertas-Chelsea-Tottenham-valore-porque-podia

Is Valencia a joke? Nah, Albelda’s the joke for wanting the rights and privileges of being a coach in order to determine when he plays. Koeman doesn’t want him in the team and it’s as simple as that. Did Cassano whine and take real madrid to court about not being chosen for Real Madrid towards the end of his stay? No. Why should Albelda do so? I think the party to question is Albelda, and not Valencia.

Albelda meant a lot more to Valencia than Cassano to Madrid, etc.
I call Koeman a ‘muppet’ because of the way he’s handled all this. It was done in an unfair, unsympathetic way. He could have smoothed things over, made them know what the deal was, sat them down and told them exactly what was up.
I think Albelda is at fault more maybe being too emotional about this, but can you fault him?
It’s a sad chapter for the team. And I blame the team first and foremost, unfortunately. This entire thing was mishandled.

I agree it wasn’t handled in the most graceful manner, (how can you sympathetically tell someone they’re through anyhow?) but I think Albelda’s character shows through that given the chance to leave, he’d rather pursue legal action instead of doing what every player wants to do, play. You think this is a good sign? Which ‘admirable’ player tries to extol vengeance when he could just walk away and resume his career elsewhere? This is why I do hold Albelda at fault, in that given the chance he chose not to leave, but then again I’ve thought Albelda to be useless for the last few years, so in a way I’m not to surprised. This whole petty trial can be reduced to the following question: ‘Who controls the right to determine Albelda’s ego?’ Sadly, Albelda thought it was his.

I think it speaks more that CaƱizares and Angulo did not actually do the same thing that Albelda did. Yes, they were deemed surplus too, but they foolishly didn’t take the team to court demanding that they had the right to determine when they play. What the hell is a coach for then if he can’t choose his line-up?

In the end, Carboni was right. He did not want to give contract extensions, or that is not very long ones, to either of these three exiled players but only did so because those players had access to members of the press who could paint Carboni in rather negative shades of red.

Of course you can tell someone they’re through in a nice manner. Happens in American sports all the time …

Another note: More than anything, the ineptitude of Koeman, Soler, etc is a black stain on the club. What player in his right mind wants to come here after seeing the way they treat their supposed ’stars’? It’s a shame they didn’t handle this with more class. It’s going to come back to haunt the club, you’ll see. And who’ll suffer for it? The fans will …

Well technically Albelda can’t be traded to another Spanish team due to the winter transfer policy in Spain, so that’s not really Valencia’s fault either.

First Hoser,A blog is just a writers opinion and even though I rarely comment,Im a fan of Cesar’s blog.
Now first lets clear some air,Valencia’s way of getting rid of our 3 ex-stars was absolutely wrong.
Imagine Angule saying he was informed on phone.Im not saying they deserve the right to play but my point is why waste their lives?
If Albelda isnt good enough to stay in Valencia CF,dont you think it will be a plus for us if he plays for R.Madrid?Isnt he supposed to make the opposing team weaker when he plays for them?
If Arizmendi gets playing time just because he is a ‘fighter’ then dont you think Angulo puts more passion into the game than Ariz?
My point- Our board sucks BIG TIME.Soler was quiet all this while and now he says it was initially supposed to be a 3 match ban.If it was extended because of the media attention, then why hasnt Angulo been called back?So far-Up until now that he said 2 players sold out,he has barely said a word since December.
Carboni was wrong for a number of reasons(He wasnt a good SD in my opinion-Yeah I know he brought Alexis,Hildebrand and Sunny) but I dont think its time to discuss that now.
Im realy pissed with the club also and I know a lot more people(fans) who share my views.

Most teams never win national trophies so shut up at least we make it to the world cup and euro every time. When was the last time the UAE made it to teh world cup?

Now that said he was never given a chance to leave teh club because he couldnt go to any major Spanish club and his tranfer fee was set rediculously at 40 million. Theya re simply trying to ruin him. This is not a club that said thanks for teh memories and lets part ways and let us help you find a new home.

these 3 players were all good. Aged vets but compared to Arizmendi , Helguera and Mora who have all had game time thats just plain stupid.

    Ali,

That makes no sense. First, Albelda has some good years of football left and he has the right to play.

Second, he wants out, and that has NO bearing on how well the Spanish National Team plays.

Shameful affair.. I think everyone pretty much figured out by now that the root of this whole fiasco is a falling out or ego clash between Albelda and the other captains and Koeman. There is absolutely nothing “sporting” in a decision to drop 3 players who are by no means the worst in our squad (think Arizmendi, Mora and Helguera) at a time when we were stretched thin. I mean lets be serious, why in the world would we play Mora when Canizares is available for “sporting reasons”? And Arizmendi? I think it’s pretty clear how useless he is, I’d take Angulo anyday and I do think Angulo is pretty terrible himself..

Look, if the moves that Soler and Koeman made with the 3 ex capitains solved the problems or made some head way, I would agree, but the team and effectiveness on the pitch when to down the crapper. Was it personal? Who knows? But Soler and Koeman’s decision making is questionable and their treatment of players deplorable. They are ruining the club and traditions.
