Trials and Tribulations

By: Javier | October 2nd, 2009

pinchaWell its been quite the couple of weeks. Sorry about the lack of posting. The Offside did a update and it wasnt agreeing with my computer. But now all is well and you can expect to read my enlightened and grandious opinion once again from week to week.

So how was the week that past.

I guess that it started off sour and then turned out sweet. (anybody else have a craving for chinese food suddenly?)

Lets start off with the Sour.

Athletico Madrid.

booThere are few teams in the world that i dislike as much as Athletico Madrid.

Simao’s signing with them instead of us. Kun Aguero’s dives in the area. Forlans bouncy blond locks of hair.

I cant help it.. i just dont like them.

I dont like their style.. i dont like their luck.

This past weekend was no different. Once again we fought out of a hole took the lead and them let it slip away. It wasnt so much the fact that we left 2 points behind on the picth that would have kept us at pace with the top contenders.

It was the way we lost it.

Our defence was a complete shambles. We attacked well.. we controlled the middle but our defence was a welcome mat as per usual. Emery did his traditional faux pas. Bring on Maduro and take off Banega. And tada .. goal to the opposition.

why1It was like having a bad dream all over again.

None of our previous lessons had been learned.

And i will be the first to admit that i saw the goal comming but was praying some devine being would grant us a moment of peace and save us from ourselves.

Of course it was not to be. And a draw was our reward.

That day i was livid. And hurt. And a whole lot of other emotions only women should express in public. But the day passed.. i calmed down and now i feel somewhat better.

You see at the end of the day it was a point against Athletico Madrid. They are a good team with an impressive attack regardless what their league possition says right now. They will be in the top half by years end and we managed to take a point at least from them. I truly believe we will get better in the back.. and our attack has already proved it is lethal. Once our Defence gets their act together, we will be a very impressive team.

Miguel Dealbert Bruno Matthieu have never played together until this season. It should be expected we are going to leak goals until they bond.

Moya.. im not as forgiving. I am finding that while better than Renan. He is no Cesar.

Which leads me to the Sweet.

EUROPA LEAGUE.

lolValencia 3 – 2 Genoa

This scoreline was not a true representation of the match i watched.

Genoa was shell shocked by our attack and movement. Mata, Pablo, Silva, Zigic, Banega all attacked non-stop.

Our poor finishing and bad luck prevented this match from easily being 5 goals in favour of los Che.

Here is what ESPN had to say about the match in case you missed it.

A David Villa penalty earned Valencia a deserved 3-2 success over Genoa to end a four-game winless streak.

Unai Emery’s side opened their Europa League Group B campaign with a draw against Lille but were good value for this win at the Mestalla, although they fell behind to a Sergio Floccari goal for Genoa.

Valencia stormed out of the blocks in the second half and quickfire goals from David Silva and Nikola Zigic put them in front, before Houssine Kharja drew the Italians level from the penalty spot.

valThe match was finally settled when Villa was tripped in the box with 10 minutes left and applied the finish from 12 yards.

Juan Mata gave Genoa an early scare when he appeared to be clean through and although he steered the ball past Marco Amelia his shot also drifted past the post.

Jeremy Mathieu blocked a weak shot from Floccari from close range in the 12th minute and then Silva went close with a driven left-foot shot which just missed the bottom-left corner of Amelia’s goal.

Defender Salvatore Bocchetti blasted a shot into the Mestalla’s second tier after 20 minutes and Valencia striker Zigic was equally wasteful with a right-foot shot over the top after a smart interception and pass from David Albelda.

Genoa got themselves in front with three minutes of the half to play when Giandomenico Mesto headed the ball into the danger area and as Valencia pushed out for offside, Floccari stretched to volley past Cesar Sanchez.

silvaThe Spanish side drew level after five minutes of the second period after Ever Banega drove forward from deep and nudged a teasing ball into the left-hand channel.

Genoa defender Socratis Papastathopoulos should have dealt with it but stumbled at the key moment and Silva seized on the ball and steered a left-foot shot into the far corner.

Mathieu’s header then drew a save from Amelia and Banega drilled a right-foot shot wide after a typical burst from deep.

Emery’s men were relentless and they took the lead in the 56th minute as Silva slipped the ball through to Mata, whose low centre from the left presented an unmissable opportunity for Zigic from close range.

Incredibly though Genoa hit back when Raffaele Palladino spotted a clever burst into the box from Papastathopoulos, who made the most of minimal contact from Mathieu and tumbled to the ground, allowing Kharja to roll a cool penalty past Cesar.

Villa, on for Zigic just before Genoa’s equaliser, forced Amelia into a near-post save with his feet.

The Spain striker was in the thick of the action again with 10 minutes to go as he won Valencia a penalty after being hauled down by fellow substitute Andrea Esposito, and made no mistake as he took the spot-kick himself.

Amelia denied him a second after Villa made space to shoot in the box with a sublime drag-back

zigI must say that the Genoa match was Exciting and Terrifying.

We played brilliant football, but were not properly rewarded. Valencia did in every aspect earn and deserve the 3 points.

If Valencia continue to play with that fluidity and passion we will make the top 4.

This is the Valencia i want to watch week in and week out.

Our defence was solid.. our keeper was solid.

I love the Valencia i saw that day and im so proud of them. AMUNT VALENCIA.

Can you beleive Villa has now scored 8 goals already.

villaAnybody that thinks we should still sell him is nuts.

Seriously .. the guy is priceless.

Humble, Loyal, Brilliant.

Bring on the weekend.

AMUNT VALENCIA

@ AL: forgive me spelling nazi. Please dont put me on the train. Clearly it was a typo but thanks for trolling.

I personally cannot wait for Fernandes to be healthy again. Im just hoping that he will still be what we remember.. an aggresive player with great play making in teh midfield.

It going to be hard to decide who will play.

    Banega – Marchena
    Banega – fernandes
    Banega – Albelda

And what happens when Baraja comes back too

    @ Nithin

Fernandes being injured was a bigger reason for that loss than Silva.

Seriously? What happens when Baraja comes back? That is an easy one. He rides the bench. 1) He can only play 60 minutes per match. 2) He is sssllllloooowwwwwwww. 3) Banega, Fernandes, and Marchena are more important (starting) than Baraja. Baraja is a super sub now, like Giggs and Scholes at Man U. Nothing more.

He was out for 3 months and if not being up to speed after that is his excuse, then fair enough. He had one brilliant game when he came back though, the rest of the time he was on the periphery of the game and did very little overall. Not one of your most important players at all. Hopefully he can do better this time around. As I say, his “breakout season” where he really delivers on all that promise he has is still to be seen. For a player of his passing and creativity, or his ability to strike the ball, he’s never ever been one of the top assisters in la liga like Mata was last year, or like Villa was first a few seasons ago. Like Banega is currently. Nor much of a goalscorer. This is what he needs to improve and set his reputation in stone because right now he’s almost all potential, and a few flashes every now and again. Your most important players are far better than that.

I dont think we can compare Villa and Banega…

Villa has given us 4 brilliant seasons. He was our star player and best player in every single one of them. In almost every single season he gave us double figures in goals and assists. He has given us everything he has in those years. In addition, he is Spain’s 2nd all time scorer ( 33 goals in only 52 matches!).

As for Banega, he has given us 6 brilliant matches so far….and a porno movie.

Dont get me wrong, so far this season Banega has been VERY good, but Villa is arguably the best player Valencia has ever had in their 90 year history. If Banega can keep this form up for another 3 years then maybe we can start comparing.

Villa wins by miles. I think most agree :P

haha, by the way Kyle, Giggs is by far our most important attacking player right now. He’s reclaimed his left wing spot, after being premier league player of the season playing in central midfield last season. Scholes, fair enough – he looks on his last legs. But Giggs is still ridiculously good. Has the most assists in the premier league so far too. Not bad for a 35 year old.

    I agree, guys:
    1. Villa is god
    2. Banega is his disciple

I’m just saying Banega’s been terrifically consistent in his brilliance since he rejoined Valencia, that’ll be around 15 games (preseason included). Save Villa, who works his ass off every game, I haven’t seen such constant high level performances from any player since I became a VCF nut, and that’ll be 10 years now.

Everyone knows Giggs didn’t deserve that award last year. It was life time achievement.

i agree with nithin.. it was silva’s absence which cost us a lot lost season especially in the final matches.. and in the barca match he was exceptional intercpting balls..as we lacked creativity.. we dint have banega to provide it either..
as for breakthrough season i think that season where we went till the quaterfinals in CL was a very good season for silva..something similar to mata’s performance last season..

Giggs ‘didnt deserve it’ because he didnt start as many games in the league as some other players. But he created the most goals for the champions, so you have to say its fair enough. And we rotate our central midfielders all the time so they are never going to have as many starts as some other players at other clubs who play every match. Being by far the best player on the pitch against Chelsea, in a new position, probably helped him achieve the award. Adapting so brilliantly to the position is what won it, he was definately the best central midfielder in england last year.

Lillo, the Mendieta that turned up for Boro isn’t the Mendieta we had. He won the UEFA best midfielder award 2 years in a row (and was also voted the best midfielder in an ESPN poll, I think). Once he went to Lazio, his decline started and by the time he came to Boro, he was a shadow of his former self. He still had his moments though. Remember that game against you?

And I have to agree with the rest of the world that Giggs didn’t really deserve that award based on last season. Maybe its because he didn’t start as many matches, as you said, but thats no reason to give the award, is it?

Ah yes, Mendieta was a beast back in those days, and I guess the only footballer – ever – who never missed a penalty! Not a chance.
Yet he never played an imporatnt role afer he left for Lazio. Should have stayed with us!

i would like to see flamini in januari. he has flopped in milan, but i think with banega he will rule the middle. i also think banega is better dribbler and passer then fabregas while fabregas is the better shooter and scorer. none of them have a good pace though

it is a bad idea to compare villa and banega. villa is the bat of our eguipment. villa is the best striker and he can play in any eguipment he wants. but he wants valencia. loyality. is the best. banega has enormus talent. but never will be villa. maybe the best midfield in the team and one of the world but for this must pass many years. we must mark all the team. now with one pass the opposite team is in one on one. they must working hard to pass our midfield and if go to our defense to stop them. defenseeeeeeeeeeeeee

When i see Diego Capel i remind me of Mendieta.. maube its the hair.

Mendieta was amazing on the right wing. Devastating acuracy with his passing.

It crushed me when he went to Italy.. and proved his career ender as well.

Nithin, as I said he created the most goals for champions while he was on the pitch. If you’re going to award an attacking player, surely thats the criteria? Whoever made the biggest attacking contribution to the team that won the competition? So thats either Giggs for creating or Ronaldo for scoring. The real reason Giggs shouldnt have won the player of the season is because Nemanja Vidic deserved it more. We relied heavily on our defence last season and set new records for consecutive games without conceeding a goal, all whilst changing the personnel at the back except for Vidic, due to injury. But defensive players rarely ever get credit and this was no different. He won our club honours as the fans and player’s player of the season though.

Lillo, two things. One, you imply that the award has to go to a player from the champions. I don’t share that view. A team can have one brilliant player and still not reach near the championship. Or there might be other teams who were just a match or two away from being champions, as was the case last year, and they could have had players who performed consistently. Chelsea and Liverpool, for example, think Lampard and Gerrard had strong cases.

Two, it doesn’t necessarily have to be an attacking player, like you said. Defensive players might not get credit often, but that doesn’t mean an attacking player deserves the award, does it?

To me, it seemed like it was a ‘Best player for ManU’ award. Even then, it should’ve been Vidic, but his errors towards the end probably made the difference. People tend to give more emphasis to recent events, don’t they?

Mendieta was a consistent player for Valencia-a box-to-box midfielder with a high work rate and an intelligent passer of the ball. He also scored his fair share of goals, some of them amazing (Mendietazos, as I believe some journalist called them).

    @moe

I was thinking the same thing about Flamini. Milan suck and next year’s the World Cup so he might be looking for a way out. Thinking along these lines, Valencia could consider signing Patrick Viera from Inter Milan next January.

Banega has played well, but is not an essential player. Silva, Joaquin, and Pablo Hernandez have provided assists without him. I would happily trade Banega to Atletico Madrid for David De Gea, an excellent young goalkeeper who looks like the real successor to Santiago Canizares.
