An assortment of Valencia news today ahead of Thursday’s match against Malaga …
- The club officially named their captains, as Carlos Marchena, Raul Albiol, Vicente and David Villa will wear the armband.
Three are Euro 2008 champions, with Vicente getting the nod for his commitment to the cause. Two are local lads, Albiol and Vicente.
Marchena will be the senior captain on the field, followed by Albiol.
Funny incident during practice on Tuesday when, after the vote for captain, Ivan Helguera came out wearing the captain’s armband. Could you imagine him as our leader??? If anything, it’s a good indication of the fine spirit around the club these days.
Naming of club captains at Spanish clubs is seen as a huge honor. The captains are voted on by club players.
- So, did Raul squash the David Villa transfer to Real Madrid?
According to Villa, that’s just not true.
“This is only a rumor. A player with so much class on and off the pitch as Raul wouldn’t have said that.
I can’t see him or one of his team-mates going to the president to say bad things about me. I have always had a good relationship with Raul whereas we didn’t play much together with the selection.”
Maybe so. But he did see himself at another club after winning Euro 2008 …
“The club told me how much my transfer was rated before the European Championship and I tended to think me leaving was the best for them,” Villa told Radio Marca.
“But when I returned from holiday Vicente Soriano was appointed president and he told he didn’t want me to leave Valencia and that he didn’t care of the club’s debt and of what other clubs offered for me.
“This made me stop doubting.”
As for the future? Who knows?
“You can never say never, because maybe in two years time Valencia will ask me to leave,” the forward suggested. Umm, no …
Despite not been 100% sure of his future though Villa did say that he would be not finishing when his contract runs out and that he would like to finish either at Valencia or his first club Sporting Gijón.
“There is still a lot of time for me because when my contract runs out I will be 32 and then I do not want to retire,” he said. “At times I think I would like to finish my career playing before the fans of Valencia but at other times I see Sporting and I think that I would like to retire there.”
Interesting statements by Villa.
You can never tell if this is what they really mean or if they’re just trying to be nice and diffuse speculation or innuendo. If it means anything, Raul also mentioned today that he didn’t squash the Villa transfer. So there …
I believe it’s safe to say that Villa was more than 50% out of here after Euro 2008. To Madrid? Who knows? But I’m sure glad he stayed.
- Mata’s overjoyed with Valencia’s start to the season.
“Right now we are very happy with the results obtained,” he said. “Our position in the table is good and we hope to continue at the top. The group is united and that has already been noted. It gives me pride to be able to play at a club like this and to start games. I like the compliments but I only think about improving and learning day-by-day with my team-mates,” he revealed.
Ok, then.
- I’m sure you’ve all seen this and it was posted on yesterday’s comments section.
But it deserves to be seen again.
Enjoy ‘The Pirates of the Mediterranean.’ It’s awesome!!

Albelda needs to be restored as the captain!

Albelda turned the armband down during the last game, according to reports … I think he’s still getting booed by a variety of fans at the Mestalla for the case against the club and Soler. I dunno why …

Thanks a lot to all of you, especially Cesar, who provided advice and assistance in my quest to obtain Valencia-Barca tickets. I hope I wasn’t too annoying in my persistent requests; just have to get this taken care of before I plan my trip, which is getting more expensive every day I wait to book it. I appreciate you taking the time and effort to help me out. Regarding the match on Sunday, I wish I could say I watched it, but given that GolTV has recently developed an odd phobia of showing our beloved, I did not. That being said, it ended how I thought it might: a close, scrappy game ending in a slim victory for Los Che. There are always mixed emotions during this game, as these two are my favorite teams. Although I root for Valencia to win, I still have love and admiration for my small, hometown team representing the lovely metropolis of Pamplona. All in all, I’m happy with the captain selections. Those are the four that I would have chosen. Hopefully we can have a goalfest against Malaga – and GolTV will allow us to see it!

Cesar, great work, keeping up the streak!!! Btw, has anyone noticed that this is one of the most active blog in al la liga blogs; I mean, barca and real might have more fans but they are NOT as dedicated as we are….
Cesar, you should try to pull back that entry you wrote a couple of months ago in which everybody got to introduce themselves to the other readers, it’s the beginning of the season and new readers keep coming… That should help u with the streak…Posted from

Albelda should have never been captain of Valencia in the first place, Albelda has attitude problems and likes to mix himself up in the business of the higher ups at the club. after the lawsuit 3/4 of Valencia’s Spanish fans hate him and most of them whistled and jeered him when he came on against Osasuna. Soriano does not want any more public protests in front of the Mestalla so Albelda will never be captain again. Emery’s decision to let the players pick captains was right and this decision reflects the will of the players so there will be no devision like how there was when Albelda was made captain or when Baraja was made captain because all the players decided for themselves.

I think Marchena and Albiol make good captains. As for Albelda being a captain, I think it was a wise choice from him refuse the armband. The team currently needs unity and bringing Albelda back as a captain will just cause tensions between the squad and fans.

That video is truly the best video I’ve ever watched that was made for VCF. Creative, overwhelming, it really touches the hearts of all the Los Che fans there are.
I’m going to watch this everytime we lose a match.

That’s a wonderful video. It’s good to see the captains are a mix of youth and experience. Also it’s good to have such a good start.

I agree Fayez. It’s best to give a full renewal instead of rehashing.
In my opinion, as harsh as i sounds the midfield duo of Albelda and Baraja have served their time and because of injury and conflict respectively should move on (Albelda) or be given a secondary (sub) role (Baraja). I like them both but there was so much surrounding Albelda, the rock of our midfield for so long now, even before Koeman…he wanted to leave the club (i do agree that he felt under-apprciated and was comparing player treatment (money/pay) to Athetico Madrid for example) and i think at his age that would be best. Baraja, i have always admired. I remember when we won the League for the first time since the 70’s and Aimar got injured during the championship run and he stepped up and took the midfield by full force and was inspirational on route to glory.
We need some imagination in the center of the park. It didn’t seem like rocket science to me. Albiol-Alexis needed to grow; so did Banega-Maduro it’s not like one of Albelda-Baraja would have remained even if the younger players were given a chance. I would like to see more done in this area.
Morientes and Angulo (especially him). He is our super trooper and has been this for many a year…he can cross yes he can cross…although you all love Joaquin he has not ever impressed me with his ability to center aerial passes…never was a strong point of his game. Angulo’s strengh and weakness was his ability to be used as a utility player over the years (I guess each player has a role).
As always i like to hear your opinions so tell me what you think.
Thanks for making fan life interesting guys.

Honestly, I would like Albelda to not even be in the team. If I wore a Valencia jersey, I would still be slightly uncomfortable till he is around and Timo issue is not resolved one way or the other.
If Alexis-Albiol partnership matures and holds steady, Marchena could fill the role of Albelda as a holding midfielder.

Not the keenest where Marchena is concerned in the def mid area but to allow Albiol-Alexis to mature i guess i’d settle.

Lol…just realized that with a bit of work Marchena could double for Mr. Bean with the pic used of him above tho.
Sorry guys, just something i that popped into mind.
Marchena has done enough over the years for me to become more confident in him as a defender.
