Tidbits

fallas.noticia

For those of you who remember my tidbits posts, it’s where I rant about 3 or 4 different subjects related to VCF and then open the floor to debate.

So … here, a new tidbits post.

- The less said about Saturday’s 4-0 destruction to Real Zaragoza, the better. The team was demoralized, physically and mentally after the midweek Champions League elimination to Schalke 04.

I understand our fan’s trepidation, being only three points above Villarreal for third place and automatic qualification to next season’s Champions League.

But what’s with this witch hunt against coach Unai Emery?

He makes odd decisions at times. He’s a tinker man of Claudio Ranieri-size proportions. But to call for his head in the crazed manner some have advocated is beyond me.

Look, I’ve ridden that bandwagon too.

But honestly, what do you expect?

The man’s coach of a club in third place in (probably) the best league in the world, behind the financial might of Real Madrid and Barcelona but also ahead of Sevilla, Atletico Madrid, Espanyol and Villarreal.

He’s got a horribly inconsistent defense. He lost two of the best players in the world this past summer and has still managed to guide us to third. He’s got management issues with Miguel and Chori and he lacks the backing of the board (at the moment).

And does he have a solid squad? Yes and no. In the last post, El Rey mentioned that we employ the likes of Jordi Alba (out of position), Banega (inconsistent), Vicente (brittle) Dealbert (awful), and Topal (decent). We also have Navarro (terrible actor), Soldado (on and off), Pablo (on and off), Guaita (young but getting better), Bruno (ahh), etc etc etc … we have a decent squad. But we’re not world beaters.

Also, Emery’s not the most likable of guys. But still, what more do you want? I think it’s great to criticize the coach. He deserves it.

But to call for his head after every match? Why?

You want to win La Liga? Sure, I’d love that too. But it’s not going to happen unless we win it on FIFA 2010. So let’s be realistic.

As the Guardian’s Sid Lowe put it …

Valencia’s players apologised to their fans after their 4-0 defeat against Zaragoza. But it was always going to happen: knocked out of the Champions League by Schalke in midweek, they played the first game on Saturday evening having travelled back from Germany and arrived back shattered emotionally and physically. Zaragoza also desperately needed a win while Valencia now know that, with an 11-point cushion, their top-four finish is virtually guaranteed.

Third is the best we can do. Third is where we’re at.

- I wish I was at Las Fallas. For all that are there, consider yourselves lucky.

- Some shocking news from Spain today concerning Our Beloved.

According to various media reports, VCF’s title winning sides of 2002 and 2004 may have been involved in doping.

Cadena Cope on Sunday quoted a “representative” of Real Madrid, who was not identified, as saying the club planned to “ask the Spanish football federation for serious anti-doping controls.”
It said Real could not understand how Eufemiano Fuentes, a doctor who was one of six people charged in December with trafficking offences in an athletics doping probe dubbed Operation Galgo, could have worked for “a first division club, specifically Valencia, curiously when it won two championships”.

Uggh …

Valencia said it had “never worked” with Fuentes or been “advised directly or indirectly by him.”

Madrid have looked on enviously in recent years as Barcelona has dominated the league and flourished in Europe winning the Champions League twice since Real’s last victory in 2002.

Haters … can’t even let us have two measly titles? How sad and pathetic.

Let’s hope Barca and Valencia sue the sh*t out of whomever reported this garbage.

Doping? Ya, that’s why we’re 87,763 points behind Barca right now.

Whatever. What do you think?

i dont hate emery i just believe hes taken the club as far as he can. I dont see vcf winning any cups underhim. I say get van gaal when he leaves bayern. Its all about cup at the end of the day. if u just want to see a club in champions every season theres rangers, fenerbache etc.

    Van Gaal? No, please.
Talk about hate … wait until you see a Van Gaal VCF era … Koeman would be like Ferguson compared to Van Gaal.

Hi Fayez nice to see one of the old names back, what happened to Lillo I wonder, he used to come out with some interesting stuff even if it was controversial which after all is what a blog is all about.
I dont think the Schalke result was a suprise whether it had an after effect or not. That is Valencia’s level. What some admirers of Emery seem to ignore is that.Valencia lost against a German team rated 10th and only 3 points from relegation. At the same time Villareal away from home beat Bayer Leverkausen
who are in 2nd place in the same league. There is always a strange situation of weak teams in the Champions and strong teams in the Eufa because the teams are decided on last years results, and you know how they can vary.!!
Valencia were lucky as everybody knew, in drawing the weakest, but Emery does not know how to come out attacking and scoring to save his life. A lot of our Liga points have been scrape-throughs….Almendras

Hey Almendras!! Nice to see you here again :)

I agree with what you said about Emery…I personally think he’s an good decent coach but definitely not the level Valencia require.

And I honestly think that any of the last 16 teams would have knocked us out. Even Shaktar and Coopenhagen. They just have better coaches in that sense that understand you have to apply different tactics for these matches.

Some of the mistakes Emery makes in cup ties are so obvious you wonder how he does so well in the league…its something I cant understand.

Im not saying we should kick out Emery right now, let’s wait until the end of the season and plan things carefully (unless the team continues 3 or 4 matches like the Zaragoza match – which I doubt!)

As for my choices for coaches (in no particular order) :

    1) Benitez – the guy knows the club, the city, and he definitely knows the league. Under him we would almost certainly perform better than Emery. Forget his time in Italy and remember his time in Spain with Valencia. He might not be the best coach in the world, but he’s better than Emery.

    2) Pellegreni – tactially he is much better than Emery, knows his tactics and built a team with Villarreal that was able to do well in la liga and the CL. Im not sure if Mallaga would let him go.

    3) Bert van Marwijk – The guy has expressed interest in coaching Valencia during the World Cup (not many coaches would do that in our financial situation). He’s proven his worth in European football (winning the UEFA Cup with Feyenord) and in international football by reaching the final of the World Cup and narrowly losing to Spain. His football isnt attractive, but I like how its focused on teamwork and his teams have this grit to them. I am not sure when his contract will end with the national team…he’s been there since 2008.

I do have other choices..some are short term (e.g Aragones) other coaches I like (e.g. Laudrup,André Villas Boas and Pottechino) but I would not choose as they havent proven themselves and could be another “Emery”.

What I think is that if we cant get someone better than Emery, then we should just stick to him….but im sure most people will agree (even the most pro-Emery people) that all 3 names ive mentioned are better than Emery tactically and you can come up with others willing to come urself.

    @Fayez. Number 3!

i don’t think Emery will continue next season unless we don’t find anyone better than him. Malaga are struggling with Pellegrini and there might be a chance they let him go. or he lets them go. i don’t know..

but i think Pellegrini Malaga departure is possible. :)

Gosh, no Benitez please, comebacks are seldom successful, and I think England & Italy totally corrupted him. He’d immediately demand costly players whom we can’t afford. We couldn’t afford his wages either.
Pellegrini would be best option for us I think, la liga-wise and CL-wise.
Second choice: Marcelo “Loco” Bielsa. He just stepped down as Chile coach, and Argentinians were always good news for VCF. To think again, I’d rate him even higher than Pellegrini atm …

Cool info about Bielsa (via Wiki)

    Bielsa’s relations with the press:

Bielsa refuses to grant exclusive interviews, the press conference has become his preferred method of communication. He has been known to field every last question from the assembled media during these gatherings. If the talk turns to the intricacies of the beautiful game, a three- or even four-hour press conference is not out of the question.
“Every section of the media should get the same attention from me, from the capital’s most prominent TV channel to the smallest newspaper in the provinces. ”

    Bielsa’s Methods:

A fanatic of football videos that he adds to his collection, Bielsa on occasion checks pitch measurements by pacing them out before deciding on a particular formation. He allocates separate training times for different parts of his squad. Former Argentine national team captain Roberto Ayala and defender under Bielsa stated Sometimes we wouldn’t see any of the strikers, because he’d have them training at a different time, and it was the same with the midfielders. He’s an innovator, and one of the people who I’ve learned most from during my career.

    Hmm …

Trust me guys I never said Benitez was my first choice, any of those 3 I mentioned (Benitez, Pellegreni, and Bert van Marwijk) would be OK with me and it would be hard for someone to argue logically that Emery is better than any of them.

I personally dont feel we would continue to improve under Emery, even with better players.

And IMO, I think that Benitez has learnt a lot from his time in Inter….I dont think his CV can take another failure. He had to face so many problems in Italy and I dont think he had the backing of the team and management, which made things difficult to him.

Financially he’s rich after his settlement with Liverpool and Inter…so he isnt going to demand much and im pretty sure if he agrees to come he would understand our current situation. I dont think anyone want him to win the CL or league with us…but we certainly want to see the team do better than this, and maybe win us a cup title.

@Quin: I agree with you about Pellegreni being a good choice. But I dont think Marcelo “Loco” Bielsa would be.

He has never coached a European team (wikipedia says he coaches Espanyol for a few games in 1998 but before leaving)…I mean it would be a bit of a gamble, it might work brilliantly but it also might backfire.

I say we only replace Emery with someone who would most likely do better, eg. Pellegreni, Benitez (IMO) etc.

You’re listening to TalkSport? Slap yourself please. One of the dumbasses on TalkSport once said that if football is being played outside of England, that it’s not important :/

NO BENITEZ! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO!

My top two favorite/realistic choices are (in no specific order):

    !) Manuel Pellegrini

    2) Michael Laudrup

rafa is the better choice for us coz i think he can do many good things & get the best of our plyaers ..lets face the truth ,,when he was with us &all the titles we have got &the imazing style that we played all that had happened but we didnt have the biggest stars ok they were such imazing ,very good players but they didnt counte as first class stars as compared with real.m or barca even at that time but we had beaten them all.
im not saying the other choices are not good ,,no they are all good but rafa is more suitable for us
