Thursday Tidbits
By: Cesar | February 4th, 2009
I can’t wrap my head around an overall theme for today’s post.
Economic doom? We have some of that.
Our star player leaving us for greener pastures? There’s a dash of that for your ‘pleasure.’
Our president lying through his veneered teeth every time he talks? Some of that, too!
It’s a veritable smorgasbord of Valencia fun! Let’s get to it, shall we??
- Valencia general director Javier Gomez says the club doesn’t have the money to pay the players.
So, like … we’re broke. All that talk of selling the Mestalla, getting a TV contract, obtaining a new shirt sponsor and getting our financial house in order is out the window …
Wow, we thought the team’s defense was bad. The accounting department’s in worse shape.
But wait, there’s more.
- President Vicente Soriano called captain Carlos Marchena yesterday to tell him the team would pay the club’s payroll wages by February 15th.
According to the report from Super Deporte, the players are remaining calm in the eye of the storm. The Valencian paper quotes Marchena saying, ‘We’re not thinking about the money. Enough with politics and enough with thinking about money. We’re calm and have confidence in the president.’
Nice words from the captain, but you have to wonder how much of it rings true. Of course he’s going to appear calm to the press. You think he’s going to throw his typical Marchena temper tantrum in front of Canal Nou’s camera?
It’s just that Vicente Soriano’s words are beginning to sound hollow.
He’s had a mystery buyer for the Mestalla for about 6 years now.
Where are they? Can we meet them, please? Maybe they’re space aliens and he’s trying to brace us for the shock when they announce they’re using the Old Mestalla as a landing field for their spaceships …
All jokes aside, this situation could devastate the already-shaky foundation of the club.
Players don’t play for free. They might be ok with this situation until next week, but what if Soriano fails to find that payroll cash by then? What then? I shudder to think …
- David Villa’s agent thinks El Guaje playing with Barca’s Lionel Messi would be awesome to watch.
While I agree this would be quality, José Luis Tamargo’s statement could mean a few things:
1. He really thinks it would be a joy to watch and that’s that.
2. He wants everyone to know that this could be a possibility, what with Valencia’s place in Spain and volatile economic situation.
3. Villa’s leaving us for Barcelona.
I can see #1 being true. You know, just talking out loud … like me saying, ‘I think it’d be neat to see Pele and Maradona on the same team.’ Hypothetical fan talk. Nothing more.
I could see #2 being true. Laying the ground work for a move. Letting the fans talk, as we are, about the distinct possibility of losing our star player.
Or #3. Villa could be sad with the situation he’s in with us. He sees he’s getting older and that his window of opportunity at winning titles and getting a mega-deal are running out. He says, ‘Screw loyalty!’ and joins Barcelona, breaking all of our hearts in the process.
My heart says it’s #1. My head says it’s #3 and we could be witnessing the worst of the worst … that’s all I’ll say about this speculative BS for now. But take a look at what Tamargo said.
Speaking to AS, Tamargo raved about the possible link-up of Villa and Lionel Messi, predicting that it would “amazing.”
He also admitted that, even though he is not sure if any of the news is true, if it were, he would be thankful to Barcelona.
“I do not know whether or not to be sure of the news, but Barcelona are a great club, and if they noticed David Villa, we would be grateful,” he declared.
The striker has a contract with Valencia until 2014, with his buy-out clause reported to be set at up to €150 million depending on the source believed, however, is unlikely that Barcelona would need to pay this to secure his services.
With Valencia in financial trouble, Tamargo admits that Real Madrid were €5m from getting him last summer when they bid €40m and suspects that a similar size offer could tempt Los Che.
Tamargo also declared that his player would not have problem settling in at the Camp Nou, claiming a move would “be beneficial for both sides,” as much for the “best team in the world right now,” as for Villa.
The agent also claimed that ‘El Guaje’ and Messi are two “compatible players.”
Uggh … uggh uggh uggh uggh uggh …
Now I’m all weepy and depressed and I haven’t even talked about the product on the pitch yet, which would give me indigestion to go along with my headache.
Woe is me.

-

bob, you gonna be there next weekend? 12-15? i’m arriving at 3pm on my flight form palma

-

Probably already covered, but the options seem to be: 1. Sell villa over the summer.use barca, man city, and whoever else wants to bid like real to get the most money. Use the money (30-60€?) to pay off some debts and make payroll. Use 5-10€ to buy 2 or more good young defenders/a d-mid. 2. Sell everyone, but villa. Maybe keep mata, but Joaquin & anyone else who needs to be sold to make 20-30€. Use some money to buy a few la liga level players to try to stay up. 3. Keep your head in your butt and lie. Go bankrupt. Hope the comunitat valencia provincial government gives you a few million euros. Prepare for gtrat segreat segunda derbis con levante!

-

David, if Silva were on sale he’d fetch 20-30 million euros alone. And Valencia’s season so far has been 99% without him. So, sensationalism aside, Valencia have players other than Villa they can sell which wont effect them as much.

-

Re: Futrell
They are Valencia Mestalla (B team in lower division) players. Maybe they were brought into the first team squad?

-

Vicente has declared he does not want to leave Valencia because he is very happy here it is his city and feels he has alot to offer the team for many years to come.
AMUNT vaya che que eres!
Thats loyalty. we dont need money or titles.. we have valencia… the greatest city in the world. just shhh be quiet about it.. we dont need anybody finding out.

-

@Cesar, I was just about to say, all these players pledging loyalty to Valencia has to be due to how sweet the city is. Don’t be too down on NYC, I may be coming next weekend! If so, Malaga match+pints+Nevada’s?

-

@timothy
you guys have drinks at nevadas and i’ll be at the mestalla. look for me.valencia is the greatest city on earth. that’s why no one wants to leave. the football palyers figured it out too!

-

@Xes, I envy you, my friend. I’ll be with you in spirit, but watching with pints at Nevada’s is the next best thing.

-

@Timothy, for sure! Let me know!
@Bob, not sure why that happened. It does it automatically so I don’t have much control over it … I can look at what it set aside for me so I’ll look now.
@Everyone – If you find me a job in Valencia, I promise to interview Curro Torres from Manolo’s and post it on the blog … and watch every game … and … and … anything! I miss it there …

-

@Xes … I am very envious …

-

Ok, I approved the messages they set aside as spam so it should show up shortly … they set aside some weird stuff! Uggh … annoying!

Soriano has got seven day extension from the construction company and also told players payment will be done by next week.
He is apparently getting a loan from a foreign financial institution to fic the immediate requirement.
Although they have announced that the agreement with kappa is confirmed and documentations have been closed for 3 years and 5.5 Million a year.although Nike has first refusal ,if they are willing to match or give more that whatever Kappa is offering.
Also Kappa is eager to boost its saled in china and have opened nearly 2000 stores .

@lester
yup. we’re blogging cracks. where’s our damn contract??!I’ll go to the ManU blog if they’ll pay me correctly for a transfer.

-

Xes the window has closed. You’re stuck on this blog for the time being but you may hand in a transfer request in the summer.
Of course by handing in a transfer request, you’ll forfeit a certain amount of your fee.

-

Lillo like a good player I don’t ask for transfers. I just move where the money’s at.

-

I really hope the players not getting their salaries would not hurt their performance tomorrow. I remember when I wasnt paid for 2 weeks due to a clerical error I was so depressed and I did not go to the gym or bother to do anything.
Of course I dont make 1-2ME per year
But still not getting paid must hurt the younger players morale.

-

Hi we havent won a game away from home since November 9th
and I dont see us winng tomorrow. Osasuna has a record of being a `black beast` with us when we have had a first rate team. They also are a `hard` team which means a few of the opposition will be limping home, if they can
(sorry Timothy) But we have a week to recover !! NO hang on Spain are playing England next Wednesday and Bosque is calling up, Villa, Silva,Marchena, Albiol(thought he was injured) and Mata for the under 21s. Still that leaves a few for Emery to kick the ball to..Almendras

-

have to agree valencia is a fantastic city, been there ll day sampling authentic margaritas among other things.
xes. yep im gonna go,but transport isnt sorted yet.and i aint gonna meet you at the airport with a pink carnation behind my ear

-

i was just gonna take the metro to the center and then walk to my friend’s place lol. a pink carnation behind the ear there will do

-

@Almendras, no need to apologize, my friend, you are exactly right. Osasuna don’t win pretty – haven’t been winning at all this year, as a matter of fact. It will definitely be a tough game for us, especially for me, as I am torn. But I always root for Valencia, which is my number 1 love, but I also don’t mind too much if Osa wins or draws. If Osa needed the win to prevent being relegated, I would def rock my osa 2003 warmup and root for the pamplonicas though.

@ Lillo- ok, I’ve gotten the chance to answer your question. The reason why I said Real over Barca, is a personal thing. I really don’t like Barca much anymore. I liked them back in the 06-07 season, but not anymore. The reason for this is because I dislike many of their players, especially Messi and Eto’o. I think that Real are a very good team, and they have won many titles recently. They are a tad out of sorts right now, but they still have great potential to win things. Barca is tearing it up right now, I won’t lie, but they just started to really kick it up this year. I don’t like their style of play much either. They play very very tactical football, and while I know it works, and at times can be entertaining, it can get a bit boring as well. I want Villa to ultimately stay with Valencia because in my opinion, Valencia plays some of the best club football. They have my favorite style of play out of all of the teams in La Liga, and that’s also why I love Valencia.
People will think I’m crazy, but despite Eto’o’s goal tally, I don’t really think he’s that great of a player. I believe that David Villa is a way better striker than him, and I hope he gets top scorer instead. I think Eto’o is lucky that he’s staying with Barca, because they really are the reason behind all of his goals. And I’m hoping nobody chops my head of for this next comment, but I don’t think Messi is a phenomenon either. He seems very predictable and very overrated, like C. Ronaldo (I’m just leaving myself open for attack now). I think David Villa is a better player than both of them too, but I’m not at all saying that Messi and C. Ronaldo are horrible players, I just don’t see the big deal, but that’s my opinion anyway.

-

Okay Denise, thanks for responding.
I see. Well I cant help you out with the Messi and Ronaldo thing
Ronaldo scored 42 goals last season along with around 8 assists – Thats a ridiculous amount of productivity for a player with a duty on the right wing. I mean, would you not believe Villa to be amazing if he scored 42 goals in a league season? And he’s a striker. To do that from the wing… Was simply unfathomable. Messi has seen Ronaldo do that and he’s upped his productivity in front of goal. Right now Messi is toying with La Liga and although he wont score as many as Ronaldo did last season (who will?) he’s already created more goals than Ronaldo did last year.As for Barcelona being boring… Well, I can see why you prefer Valencia’s style of play. When you’re on form anyway
Some great 1 touch passing and flicks from Villa and Silva in particular. Thats the thing that stood out for me in the supercup this season and why I’ve been watching every Valencia game this season. But this is the first time I’ve read that someone feels Barcelona’s football has been boring this season because a lot of their play has been sensational to watch. If you’d said that about Madrid though I’d have agreed.David Villa is a great player though, the most complete striker in the world in my opinion and also my favourite player. Had he been at Barcelona this season I’ve no doubt he’d have scored at least as many as Eto’o – because he’s just as dangerous as Eto’o, but Villa works a lot harder. He is also a total team player and would have set up far more goals this season than Eto’o who has barely set up any. That would add a new dimension to Barcelona and I believe thats why they want him. I wish we (United) had tried to buy him this summer, instead of spending all that money on Berbatov though. Rooney and Villa would have been a partnership that smashed everyone to pieces. Sadly its not to be.
