This One Hurts
By: Cesar | October 4th, 2007
Yesterday’s 2-1 loss to Chelsea felt like a punch in the gut.
True, we didn’t lose ground on the other teams in our Champions League group (Schalke defeated Rosenburg 2-0 to go level with us at 3 points. Chelsea leads the group with 4 while Rosenborg has 1).
But we could have done better. We SHOULD have done better.
What’s so dissapointing is the nature of the loss. Coming against a club in crisis, who didn’t play that great, who looked lackluster and ready to be killed, we lacked that murderous instinct and let them into the game.
Time and again in the first half, Valencia let chances go by. The goal by Villa came from clumsy defending on Chelsea’s part, a comedy of errors as four defenders surrounded El Guaje and could only watch him poke the ball through Petr Cech’s 5-hole. A beautiful goal from our wonder striker.
After that, what happened? Our defense looked soft, the midfield lacked cohesion & creativity and the chances dried up. The second half was more of the same garbage we’ve seen all season: lackluster play, defensive errors and no unity.
In a word, we stunk.
I will say we looked good in the first half. Villa’s goal was sensational, Joaquin looked agressive and Silva was probing.
But that killer instinct wasn’t there and it effectively cost us the match.
Some more random notes from a game I actually watched:
- Zigic finally played! I think he’ll be a great signing. Kind of weird that this was his first run with the team. You could see the tactics change when he came on. Ball to Joaquin, ball up in the air. The chemistry with the tall striker will come. I’m salivating at the prospects.
- Honestly, Flores is a muppet and you all know it.
85-year-old Baraja for Albelda? That’s a tactical move? Arizmendi for Joaquin? Come on … no, really. Stop defending this guy. What is it that he tells these guys that either doesn’t motivate them or makes them play like such crap in the 2nd half of games?
- We miss Ayala SO MUCH. It’s awful to say but this had to be one of the worst moves of the off-season.
Helguera doesn’t cut it even though he’s a hard-worker. Albiol is still a little too raw. Alexis? I haven’t seen enough of him to know … what do we do here? The loss of Ayala is the single biggest reason we’re so out of it defensively. I’ll point to that more than Flores’ lack of coaching ability as the reason we’re struggling now.
- Villa’s great. Joaquin is fabulous. The midfield? Fernandes better be Zizou because it looked AWFUL yesterday. No creativity, no class. Why not sub Albelda for Sunny? I mean, Baraja? Come on …
- Enough with the fake diving. It drives me bonkers to see these guys falling down, trying to get penalties and fouls. Villa, Zigic and Joaquin all fell over like shot by a sniper yesterday. Who teaches them this? We used to be a lot better about this. Enough! Please! It’s embarrasing!
So there you have it.
Two more pieces of business:
1 - Barcelona president Joan Laporta stopped by my local football bar to watch the Barca match this weekend. As you can imagine, he was mobbed by the supporter’s club there.
Two things about this. One, wonderful that he showed up and hung out with the fans. Two, why do I get the feeling Juan Soler would never do this sort of thing?
I’ve only been trying to start a penya now for seven years …
2 - I talked about Levante and their quest to get a cup victory from the 1930’s recognized by the Spanish footie federation a few months back. Looks like that’s going to happen now. Have a gander at this article from the Guardian. Enjoy lads, and let’s keep our heads up, eh?
Levante pick up football trophy - 70 years on
Paul Hamilos in Madrid
Monday October 1, 2007Guardian
Levante sit bottom of the Spanish football league, with a single point, and were thrashed 4-1 by Barcelona on Saturday. But Levante will be picking up one trophy this year - even if it is 70 years overdue. The Spanish parliament has voted to recognise Levante’s victory in the Republican Cup final of July 18 1937, a game that had long been wiped from the official records.
In 1937 Spain was divided; the fascist forces of Franco occupied just over half of the country, while the republicans were besieged on the other side. Football still had its place, and the eight clubs on the republican side organised their own league, with the four top-placed teams competing for the Republican Cup, an offshoot of the King’s Cup, the Spanish equivalent of the FA Cup. That year Barcelona, having won the league, went on a tour of the US and Mexico to raise money for the republic, allowing fifth-placed Levante to take their place in the cup. Levante went on to beat their cross-town rivals Valencia 1-0 to lift the only trophy the club has ever won.But Franco’s regime rejected the republican league and cup, removing all mention of Levante’s victory from the record books. The only evidence of Levante’s win comes from newspaper reports and their fans’ memories. One fan in particular was desperate to get the history books rewritten. Xavier Rius appealed to the Spanish football federation to reinstate their victory, but initially met with little success. He went to the Valencian MP Isaura Navarro of the leftwing IU-IVC, who took the issue to parliament. Success was achieved last week, with the help of a rebellious centre-right People’s party MP. Parliament approved a call for the football federation to recognise the Republican Cup. Seventy years on, Levante’s long-suffering fans can finally celebrate their one trophy.

I don’t know if I read the defense situation the same. Ayala is missed sure, and it was a shame that his contract situation became what it became, but it was time for him to move on. I was wish he was a little more professional with the club, his contract situation kind of revealed him to be more mercenary than Che at heart, but still, you can’t deny the talent.
That being said, I think Albiol has the potential to be a very good central defender. I remember some matches last season where he was really quite good, perhaps even better than Ayala. I think some people need to give him some more time before they write him off. He needs to find both consistency and a little more tactical awareness and I trust that he will.
And yes, I’d say that the defensive laxity is somewhat Quqiue’s fault. The team appears to not be playing as a unit, so defensive holes are bound to creep up everywhere and are there to be exploited. I don’t care how good of a central defender you are, but no one can constantly paper over the mistakes of fellow team mates when they’re the last line of defence.
And yes, yesterday’s match was garbage from both teams perspective. I don’t think either team deserved a win.
Personally, I think the team is in a transition mode and needs to cut away some dead weight like Canizares, Albelda, Baraja, and Angulo and replace them with younger players. Yes they served their time well, Canizares in particular, but for me their best days are in the past. They are players that are living too much in the shadow of past success, and if it was me or just about anyone, I wouldn’t put shadows in a starting 11. As cruel as it sounds, I don’t think Valencia will win anything with these players still getting a decent chance to play regularly. Even though it sounds dire, but I think what Valencia will do with these players has more of an impact on the immediate future than anything that Valencia will do this season.

I have to agree with hoser on the point about cutting the “dead weight.” If I may be so bold as to bring in the New England Patriots as an example of a well-run team: they are ruthless and without compassion for bad players. They keep no one around for sentimental reasons* and that works wonders for them. They have won 3 Super Bowls in 5 years. Can’t really beat that. The Colts won by cutting loose Edge and moving on.
In soccer, look at the fact that Beckham got the boot from ManU. That’s a pretty good example of a team that now has more flexibility and depth. Arsenal is plowing ahead without Henry, Campbell, etc. In Spain, Barcelona seems to have found the right idea by dropping Gio van Bronckhorst, Saviola, Motta, and Lopez. Madrid got rid of Roberto Carlos and even gave you guys Helguera (ew). Despite what they’ve given the club, they’re screwing them now, so get on with the new generation. At least you’ll be able to say “we’re rebuilding” rather than “we’re slowly crumbling, but at least we’ve got heart.” Pick your poison.
That said, you guys are going to do just fine for the rest of the year. But hopefully this coming January and off-season, you’ll make some dramatic moves in defense.
*I’m not just parroting a line stated by Tony Kornheiser et al on MNF, either. They actually came up with a real statement there, for once.

Hello!
I’m glad to see your blog about Valencia. I check I almost every day. I agree in many things you say but one thing that I don’t like is that you very rarely see anything positive. You mostly talk about “Quique, vete ya” and those sort of things. OK, we haven’t been playing superb football for 90 minutes in any game yet. But we were undefeated in the whole of September and actually played amazingly the first half against Getafe and we were very good against Schalke 04.
Continue bloging because you’re doing a great job. But please, try to be more positive sometimes.
You’re a great writer and that’s why I read everything you write but I often get depressed afterwards.

Emil, I will try to stay more upbeat!
You should have seen me in the Benitez days … TOO happy!
Yes, we’ve won here and there. My general feelings are spread throughout my posts. I do sense I whine a bit too much but it’s difficult when you care, sometimes.
But yes, I will try! Thanks for reading!!!Posted from

please people stop with the “we won 5 games” or with the “we were undefeated”.. a person tht really loves tht team wouldnt be satisfied no matter what with how we are playing… just look at the other teams how level of tactics and players are rocketing up… and look how our players and tactics are rocketing down… i feel you Cesar when u whine and i prolly whine as much as you do.. and tht absolutly shows how much we love the team and tht we have “HIGH” expectations for tht team why wouldn’t we when we have players like villa and silva and morients and m. fernandes and much more. but really people a Perfect shotgun needs a great hunter inorder to catch something…. they have to be together to get somewhere. QQ should be kicked out. so should canizares, moretti, baraja, albelda, arizmendi, angulo, gavilian, hilguera….thts harsh but if u really want to win cups and frighten big teams u shouldn’t count on albelda in the middle.. someone more creative perhaps… same goes to moretti, and no matter what you do.. never ever ever think arizmendi is the man for the job.. hes a JOKE! .. we need players. we need van der vaart

Defense defense!!! and a little creativity in the midfield Van de Vaart? Miguel is solid everyone else needs to prove something or we can just wait around for next year and finish out 3rd or 4th in La Liga. I love this team and it hurts when we lose because i view us as one of the top teams in europe. We should be better… maybe we should cut some dead weight baraja, albelda. Canizares is still solid. I dont have any faith in Hildebrand he looks scared and intimadated everytime he steps on the pitch.

I’ll join the rant…
My personal dead weight list:
ARIZMENDI
Baraja
Angulo (I’d only keep him for sentimental reasons)I feel like crying everytime I see Sneijder in action. A top priority for Jan should be a creative central midfielder. Even though Fernandes is promising, he can’t be the ONLY player of that type we have. Who’ll play when he’s injured/suspended/rested? Unless Edu recovers and gets a bionic, injury proof body we have no other players for this position (ignoring Baraja’s existence of course)
Cesar, see you at Nevada’s tomorrow?

Cesar, all these rants and posts about needing a defensive replacement for Ayala was somethin I have said since pre-season (Check the comments in July and August). It was bound to happen, but I didnt think it would be against a depleted Chelsea side, Albiol looked bad against Drogba and the Joe Cole goal was just pitfull defending and marking. Malouda cant be allowed to turn so easily without any pressure on him.
Im hurt, but still optimistic about the future. This is just one game out of six. We will be in the elimination round, but we just have to stay positive.
Really value your blog and insight into the Greatest Club in the WORLD.~AMUNT~ VALENCIA CF.I see Emil is also complaining about your pessimistic outlook. Well, its ok sometimes, but

Ali/
So what you’re saying is that I don’t like the team as much as you do? If you only knew better…
And cleaning out half the squad? Yeah you must be a huge fan (and extremely stupid). I agree we need to get rid of Baraja (and get another creative midfielder), Angulo (and get Pablo Hernandez who’s doing wonders at Getafe) and perhaps some other player.
But Gavilan? Are you stupid? Do you ever watch the games?
Why not get rid of Vicente, Villa, Joaquin and move the team to Santander and play 3-5-2?Please..

Emil i didnt say im a biggef fan than you are i also didnt insult you then `why should you insult me nd call me stupid? thts just my opinion u can take it or leave im not forcing it on you… i dont no why ur soo defensive but oh well… to prove my point… if we sell any of those players that i listed we nee dto get rid of.. give me ONE BIG TEAM ( Man united, Chelsea, Real Madrid, Barcelona, AC Milan ..etc ) that is going to buy any of them… im sure the only teams that are going to want them is Santander and Levente perhaps… I Love Valencia but i don’t like all the second class players we have. and it is simple really ,, u wanna be one of the big teams… get big players and a big coach…. and if u are satisfied with how Valancia is doing then ur expectations for that team is soo low,,, and thts not how i want the team i love to be… and callin me stupid because u disagree with me…. grow up sweety really.

I’m sorry for that. It just looked like you meant that I’m not a fan big enough or something. And yeah, it was me who was stupid writing that you were.
But what I really meant about the players is that we can’t just sell the whole team and get rid of our first cap (Albelda) our second (Baraja) and our third (Angulo) that just don’t make any sense at all.
Also yes, you’re probably right. If we sold those players you listed the big team wouldn’t go after them. But would we go after O’Shea (Man U), Finnan (Liverpool), Oleguer (Barcelona), Salgado (Real Madrid), Dacourt (Inter) Kaladze (Milan)?
No we wouldn’t!I agree with you, we have to get rid of some players but the 8 you’re listing. That’s waay to much! Helguera has been playing well, Gavilan is a real talent, he’s just been really unlucky with injuries.
We need a rejuvenation in the team and get rid of the old players who had their peak about 2 years ago. But we can’t do it all in the same time.
Sorry for my earlier post but I felt insulted by your first post as well.

im sorry u felt insulted by my post i really didn’t mean to insult you at all… your right 8 players to sell like tht are too much, maybe4 is the magic number… anyways im sorry again for all of misunderstanding… takecare of yourself. wish u a good day.. and for all Valencia fans! and for VALENCIA!

we just lost 2-1 against espanyol. just finished watchin the game…
-the second goal was exactely the same goal villareal scored… our defense were watchin the game( just as if they were spectators) and Luis garcia sneeked between Alexis and Raul Abiol and they left hildebrand in a position not a lot of goalkeepers wish to be put in.-All our players did was play from the sides with high high shots from the left mostly and im sure Espanyol’s goalkeeper (isma’el.. i think) is thanking Angulo and Arizmendi for the practice they gave him…
-Zigic played and was okay not good not bad cant blame the man 2nd game for him.
-Add our best player David Villa to the injured list…. actually add my heart to that list too.. so no more “Sucker” (VILLA) to tht sucker (QQ)
- Baraja scored and then just disapeared from the field
-Arizmendi lol i dont no what he was doing …
im heartbroken.. cant wait to see a boot on QQ’s ass with a shout ” OUT!!! “.Posted from

QUIQUE VETE YA !

Watched the game at Nevada’s… Jeez.. Instead of typing “Quique vete ya!” x100 I’ll offer some thoughts..
- Why did we not buy Wesley this summer, why? QQ insists on playing an uninspiring duo in central midfield which
forces all of our attacks to build from the wings. Combine this with starting the stellar world beating champions of Arizmendi and Angulo on the wings, leaving Joaquin and Silva to watch from the bench… you get the idea- We miss Ayala so bad, at times our defenders looked like schoolboys today
If I had faith in QQ I’d say lets wait til we get more creative central midfielders in January and see how he fares, but I’d much prefer we sack QQ and get Jose, hell anybody with some sort of tactical acumen to see us play to our real potential

I saw the Espanyol highlights and replay right now at 11pm on GOLTV.
I came on to hear what you all had to say b4 i watched the whole game and was stunned to ready the first post by Hoser. I shoulf have read it earlier but i didnt. I must say, Hoser are you crazy?
You call Valencia’s “Captain” Albelda, dead weight? Albeda has more years and experience on the pitch for the club than anyone. Just like the team is realizing how important Ayala was and currently is, you cant replace the importance of Albelda. Villa too.
What I can tell you is when Villa is not on the pitch, the team fails. as good (or as deep rather) is the depth at the foward/striker position, without David Villa, goes the chance to win.
When red carded against Villareal, Valencia loses 3-0. Valencia vs. Villa-less Espanyol loss 2-1. Silva and others need David Villa. It shouldnt be that way.And to address the Wesley Sneidjer issue. Wesley and Ajax were not gonna sell him to Valencia. If Los Che had offered Ajax 30 mil, they would have said, lets see if Real or Barca are interested and what will they offer before we sell Wesley. Ajax wanted to sell him to any a team that can and will pay a premium for him. Most likely Real or Barca or someone who will pay with deep pockets. Valencia offered 15mil for him in May-June. Real said yea, Ajax “we’ll take Wesley at 20-25mil” in August. Ask yourself this if you were Wesley and his representative, do you want to go to the 3 or 4th place team in Spain and make 3-5 mil a year, or go to the 1st place team in Spain and make 10-15 mil a year with massive world recognition and attention.
If anyone who had the interest of the big clubs, will go there first before the 3rd or 4th place clubs, until the big clubs stop splashing the cash.Posted from

Hi Franky,
We’re all entitled to our opinions, but yes, Albelda is a player that is on the decline in my opinion. His passing was woeful against Chelsea, and surely the just reward for him was to ride the bench against Espanyol. In my opinion Marchena is the far better defensive stopper in midfield than Albelda. Albelda has been just flat out bad the last year or so. Okay, he was decent a few games last year - the Barça game comes to mind - but his bad spells far outweigh his good spells. Sure he’s the captain, but at what cost do you want to maintain ties to a player who’s best matches are clearly in the past?
As for Ayala, it would have been nice to have him around, but defense is a team game more than anything. If your offense relies so much on wing play, then your full backs will be overstretched and caught out in the middle of nowhere on any counter attacks, leaving just about any central defenders exposed as it happened yesterday against Espanyol. Case in point: where exactly was Miguel on the first goal and where was Moretti on the second? The lack of creativity from central midfield really taxes the wing and full backs, which is kind of why Valencia is such a predictable team to play against. Shut down the wings, dominate the center and you’ll get good scoring chances. It’s as simple as that.
And yes, Franky, I’ll stick by my opinion if it means that I’m crazy.

in my opinion we either become a team that cuts players for bad performance in order to stay on top or we become a team that remains loyal to players as they slump and pay the price.
