This Could Get Controversial
By: dan_c | April 18th, 2011
Dan here.
As the season runs to a close, it appears (trying not to count chickens here) that we have 3rd place within reach. Surely at least we know we will feature in Champs League next season.
For this reason, instead of talk being on the league table and the rest of the season, most of the faithful seem to be discussing the futures of our players and particularly manager into next year.
Now to be clear, this post is not about assessing Emery’s performance (which divides opinion to say the least, but I think he has done well.).
My two questions are rather
If Emery were to leave:
IF YOU could CHOOSE any MANAGER to take over at the Mestalla last year, who and why?
REALISTICALLY, who would YOU CHOOSE, out of managers who probably would be keen on the post?
Feel free to hate and disagree with my answers as you will and debate other possibilities.
But my answers are:
(the first video is definitely worth watching by the way. Second is also cool, mainly for the quotes.)
Jose Mourinho. Now the haters will do their hating, and I admit that this man steps on many toes, but, aside from his tremendous managerial record, (the legendary 9 year undefeated home streak, the two Champions League wins, the mountains of Portuguese, English and Italian silverware and, dare I say it, a little Spanish silverware before too long) he I believe is incredible because he knows what he needs to do to transform players from abject to world-conquering. He is an incredible motivator. His players love him and play out of their skins to please him. He is a shrewd tactician. He is a great manipulator of media. His ability at mind-games is fearsome. He can and does come across as arrogant I believe because he knows that he CAN. He can handle the egos and control the flaws. At heart, he is a magnificent competitor. Forget Ferguson, Guardiola, Pellegrini, Ancelloti, Wenger et al, this is the man I would call. He revolutionises teams and gets results. What more could you ask for?
Unfortunately it will take a lot of dreaming or illegal hallucinogenic substances to find The Special One patrolling the home dugout of the Mestalla so my second answer can’t mirror the first. It took me far longer to decide on this one but I have made a choice. I don’t expect massive agreement but here it goes. What about…shoh this is tough…what about… Rafa. The Rafa. Benitez. NOW I KNOW HE HAS FAILED RECENTLY AT INTER AND BEFORE THAT LIVERPOOL (let’s not beat around the bush) and I KNOW that circumstances at Valencia are different to the last time he was here but I can’t help but think back to those glorious times of the early millennium. He knew how Valencia worked, how to maximise the player’s ability, what players to bring in from a potential-filled Spanish market, and most importantly he knew how to win. Right now I am so starved of glory that maybe, just maybe, another stab from King Rafa can bring back some precious metals, some silver for that far too woody cabinet. When I dream of Los Che, Uefa Cup and La Liga in hand, I can’t help but think of Rafa, standing there, revelling in what he’d done. And what is more, I think he’d return. Jobless, reputation sullied, I think he’d welcome a chance to come back to a place of so many good memories.
Rafa lined up for shock Valencia return.
Let the floodgates open.

It was a match of two halves. Valencia’s defence collapsed in the first half.
Emery’s half time talk clearly had an impact when it seemed Valencia even 5 goals down managed to get 3 and was unlucky not to get at least a couple more.
Also some clear penalties were not called. This match in the second half was all valencia.
Sadly 6 goals at home hurts. But it was the first half that ruined the match.

Well that wasn’t a good showing for La liga. Although on the bright side that Jonas guy looks to be a very good player in the future.

-

Mourinho is so good he made mestalla his second fortress next to bernebaue…

-

for how long we will be using the financial situation as an excuse every time we lose?
was just thinking. every loss to barca and real is justified for what? 3 more years? or 5? it’s never an excuse.

-

@Javier: Personally I dont think Emery’s half time team-talk had any impact whatsoever on the match.
In fact it was Real that scored first and we only saw an impact when Emery changed the system (which logically should have been done when we were 3-0 in the 1st half!). Emery waited far too long to make changes to a system that wasnt working from the 1st 20mins.

-

And the team broke a new record today, we’ve never conceded 6 goals in Mestalla in our history.
And this was against a weakened Real Madrid side…I dont think we can give credit to the coaching staff or anyone really for this disgrace.

-

We have seen this before, a soft start and when we are losing, our attack is put into play. What was Joaquin doing sitting on the bench? If we had put a full attacking force out from the start and got our goals then, it would have been a different result. Our defence was dreadful so you cant win that way.I can remember at least 3 goals where the forward came racing down on the right leaving the defence behind, which drew Gaita over to cover the shot, then in front of the goal the ball was passed to the left wing who had also raced down and of course an easy goal. At least three times, didnt the defence notice this?? Someone could have pointed this out to Emery………

Everywhere i read now in the Spanish sport press, they’re criticizing Emery. well, i don’t think anyone would blame them.

-

and i think that someone should read that and translate it as my spanish isnt as good as my english. but i understood it. Emery is not safe even if he gets 3rd place and the talk about the defense and the plans of the VCF’s new signings.

Emery goes from genius one game (Villareal) to idiot the next (Real Madrid). Love it.

-

Who said he was a genius for the Villarreal match? Villarreal were clearly tired from playing just three days before, and were playing two players in defense that wouldn’t even play for VCF Mestalla!

The main problem with Emery is that when he starts with an incorrect formation or strategy, he rarely changes it early on in the match when we have a chance to correct things. Sometimes its painfully obvious what the problem is but he continues to play when he might be able to improve things.
Ive rarely seen a football match where a team is losing at home by 4 goals in the first half and the coach doesnt make a single change to the system in half time (eg. bring on an extra striker, an extra attacking player). In fact it was not until Real scored a 5th goal and it was at 60mins (the time he usually makes his subs) that he made two subs…why wait that long?
From a coaching sense, I think Emery’s lack of reaction was a disaster…he could have improved the match but choose not to do so. I dont think there is a single logical reason for that.
Im not upset we lost (I felt proud against Barcelona in Mestalla even though we lost), im upset at how we lost and how our coach helped them by being passive.
Some people have been saying that it was Emery who changed the system that got 3 goals for us….well why didnt he bring in Jonas when it was 3-0 in the first half and when we still had a fighting chance?
No other Valencia team or coach has managed to let in 6 goals in Mestalla, and there were no red cards or penalties against a weakened Real Madrid.

a lot has been said about departing players etc… some players for sure need to get the hell out of valencia simply because they are useless such as maduro and some of our defence… but what im hearing is that vicente contract wont be renewed and so is cesars contract and they dont want domingues and fernandes… and then they talk about if emery is staying or not.. this raises a question and doesnt make sence to me… shouldnt a coach have a say on who stys and who leaves… and if emery our coach will leave then shouldnt the new coach have a say on who stays and who leaves, domingues and fernandes and vicente and cesar all are talented players that a lot of clubs wish to have.. so the question is, on what bases do they want to get rid of those players? llorente, burielo and emery? if the answer is yes then does that mean emery is staying? and if the answer is no, then why say you wana get rid of these players that the new coach might find usefull and want in the team….?
i think they should renew cesar contract, cesar has been great every game he played, and have saves us a lot… plus hes got experience.. not a lot of goalkeepers with his experience play as good as he does nowadays… guita is good but he looses confidence really quickly,,, we all saw how his confidence got ripped against shalka… guita is good but he needs more time.. so whats the mamegment is doing is they r bringing diego alves which has never played in champions league or faced any big clubs out of spain.. and getting rid of cesar.. so our choices will be guta, dego alves and whoever our third option is… thats stupid!!!
vicente is very underrated under emery, when he was injured we all missed him, and when he got better he came on as if he was never injured scored a goal or assested a goal, hes been very usefull, and now that he is not injured he is bieng watsed just because he critiszed emery… well screw emery ur nt furgeson to not be critisized specially when u have so many stupid decisions on the field..
domingues is very talented but he didnt get enough chance in my opionion, he was ready to play when arrived and was left on the line as if his arrival was forced on emery… putting in mind ac milan wanted to get him soo bad but we did cuz he chose us over milan…
fernandes…What coach would get rid of fernandes and keep maduro… nuff said.
id rather emery goes and twhoever they brig to replace him has the final say on who goes and who stays based on his plans and vision.

SD claims we already signed Diego Alves, so why keep Cesar, we first have to take care of Guaita, Alves, Moya and Renan. Cant have them all, we need to cut ties anyway.
Chori has motivational problems, thats why he doesnt play. And rightfully so imo.
Vicente might be a brilliant player once in form but we need to be realistic, the guy cant play more than 4 full matches in a row, but costs 3 million a year with taxes. Nobody benefits from his short brilliance, we cant afford it.
Levante-emv says Maduro is being offered a one time deal, if he doesnt agree he will be put on sale. I never liked the guy as a player cause he isnt good enough but i kinda like players who just do their job and dont complain. I mean, take a Chori, Banega or Fernandes, they’ll make trouble. As a backup, i dont have a prob with Maduro.
But, we have Topal plus Albelda is said to receive a one year extension, so we dont need Maduro.
And you all know how i feel about Emery, dont understand the guy, like Fayez said. But based on his results, he should be renewed. Thing is, as people said when he came, he is a coach who favors winning 4-3 over 1-0. That is a state of mind which negatively affects a team. Keeping 0 after a match has way more effect than scoring one more than the other. He should realise that, for a house to be solid it needs a solid foundation. In football, a defence is the foundation and therefore the key to success, no matter how strong the roof / attack is.

-

@Johnnie: I agree with what you said about Maduro, I dont like him and he certainly doesnt give 100% like some of the other players…but at he doesnt complain about being on the bench (which is always good when youre 4th choice).
Personally id test Montoro (from the B team) in the last few matches, if he’s better than Maduro I wont keep him…With Ever, Topal, Costa and Albelda (+Maduro/Montoro) we’re covered for next year, unless someone leaves.
Of course, if Fernandes comes back then I dont see any reason why we should keep Maduro. Although I think it would be best for club and player for him to go for 8ME.

-

johnie why buy him in the first place then whn? we have cesar and guita nd moya? thy r low on cash then no need for those unnecessary buys specialy cesar is willing to stay and IS able to give great performance… all big teams have experienced goal keepers or really realy good goalkeepers such as de gea and neuer.

-

thn? *

-

@ Fayez, sure test him, but i have my doubts about a 22 year old who hasnt been with the senior squad more than 5 times. If we are going to continue this 4-1-4-1 thingy than we better keep some midfielders btw.
@ El rey, cause cesar is getting too old and moya isnt up for it, neither is renan. And, cause Alves can be one hell of a goalie!! Good competition for Guaiti id say! So we’re actually looking for a decent 3rd keeper, which we will need cause we dont want Renan, Moya wants out and Cesar will go!

-

Cesar still has a year of great play in him… its a risk playing in the CL with 3 inexperienced goal keepers… diego is 25 years old with no experience in europe… guita is 24 with several matches in europe one where he got rapped in when it got loud behind him… Cesar exceeds them in 14 years of playing time,,, 14 years!! plus the fact hes really good! 14 years of experience on top level is not something we should just let go for an unproven (euro-wise) kid.

-

Im also for keeping Cesar for another year if we absolutely want a 3rd keeper. His experience will definitely be useful to Guaita and Alves.
I agree with Johnnie about Guaita, he still is very inexperienced and in big games he had major blunders (eg. against Real and Schalke)…having someone with experience can help.
With regards to Montoro, I also have my doubts about him, but based on what ive seen from Maduro in the last few matches I dont think he has to do alot to prove he’s better
Hopefully the 4-1-4-1 isnt going to be used again…I dont think it worked against Almeria (not like when we play the 4-2-3-1 or the 4-4-2) and it certainly didnt work at all against Real.

-

Thing is i doubt Cesar wants to spend his last year(s) as a third goalie at Valencia, he can do better than that and personally i thinks its embarrassing if we would “reward him for his services” like that.
LOL Fayez you got a point there. Still i think its hard to find someone who’s not complaining (i mean, Maduro isnt good but he isnt that bad either, are many worse).
I think the 4-1-4-1 works for sure, it wasnt the system that failed last time it was the squad. Playing a high backline like that is retarded, if we didnt think we were Barca that game would have turned out totally different. So keep modest and cautious Valencia.
Koeman said in an SD-interview that Valencia isnt gonna win anything in the next 5 years. Johnnie says, to quote Les Grossman; Now Ronald, I want you to take a step back…and literally f*** your own face.
