The Special One

By: Cesar | September 20th, 2007

mourinho_jose_cfc_profile_2006.jpgIt’s quite simple, really.
Fire Quique Sanchez Flores.
Hire ‘The Special One’, Jose Mourinho.

I can end the blog post there, but I’ll go on.

Unless you’ve been living in a cave the past few hours, I’m sure you’re aware Jose Mourinho quit his post as gaffer at Chelsea.

I didn’t watch the Champions League encounter between our beloved (Valencia, not Mourinho) and Schalke 04, but I read the commentary online.
Suffice to say we struggled again, playing adequately enough to win but still not playing up to standards.

We’re not hitting on all cylinders. And this year, you can’t blame injuries. Regular readers of the blog know who I pin the blame on. And please, no arguments that it’s early in the season. Results are results. The team hasn’t ‘improved’ in three seasons now. And Quique is the head of this leaking ship.

Again, I know. We’ve won 2 games. We won in the Champions League. But I’m thoroughly unconvinced. And I’m not alone in this sentiment. Go on the forums. Read what everyone is saying. Go to the Mestalla. Watch the fans wave their white hankes, yelling Quique Vete Ya! (Quique, Leave!)
It’s not me jumping into the group mentality. It’s me agreeing with what everyone’s saying …

So how about Soler announces a press conference this afternoon, fires Flores and announces the Shock of the Century: Valencia has a new coach, Jose Mourinho.

Think about it.

- Jose is one of the best, if not the very best, coach in the world.
- He’s a winner. Wins a trophy almost every season. Won the Champions League with Porto in 2004, taken Chelsea to new heights.
- He’s a showman. He knows how to defer attention away from his players onto himself.
- He operates a similiar system to old boss Rafa Benitez.
- He’s probably looking for a challenge, the opportunity to take a high-level club like ours to a different stratosphere.

It’s win-win for us. We’d immediately lift our worldwide profile and not for something silly like fighting Inter Milan after a match.
We’d instantly juice up our already fiery rivalries with Barcelona and Real Madrid. Could you imagine the smug ‘Special One’, celebrating a goal by Vicente at the Camp Nou, sliding down the touchline pumping his fists much like he did last season with Chelsea?

Oh, man. This could be magnificent!

Mourhino as our coach, a superstar making his home at the Mestalla …
Soler has the money to do it. He’s a billionaire!
Now all he needs is the guts to fire an unpopular coach …

One can dream, no?

Well, would be interesting to see clubs going so far as to fire their current coach just to be able to snatch Mourinho as long as he is still on the market… :-)

He earned 10m/year with Chelsea (the next highest paid manager, Alex Ferguson, gets only 6m/year), but I guess no matter where he goes, he has to take a cut in salary.

Jose Mourinho, is a quality coach. Is he a person who can do the job. Yes! But he doesnt want to move to Valencia. He’s going back to Portugal to coach the National Team. Sky Sports News has just reported these bookmakers odds.
JOSE MOURINHO’S NEXT JOB WILL BE:
    Portugal 4/9
    Tottenham 10/1
    Inter Milan 15/1
    Real Madrid 20/1
    Juventus 20/1
My money is on Portugal, if not there, then he’ll move to Real Madrid.

Why should he go to Real? They are doing perfect fine. Valencia would be perfect for him to re-demonstrate himself. Anyway almost everyone is better than Quique, so I’d like to see a change…Moronho would surely teach our players how to fire up by calling themselves “the Special One”…:D

Most probably he’ll handle the Potugese NT, as I read. I feel Atletico Madrid and/or Barcelona may be looking for new coaches if they kept doing bad in La Liga.

Please God, bring us the smug, arrogant coach Mourinho and let us dominate the local and european scenes.

So i just finished watching the last match against Betis. I must say valencia looked somewhat better though i still dont know why you would play arizmendi ahead of Morientes.. but whatever. Two nice goals. the Miguel goal was brilliant and Joaquin was such a gentleman by asking forgivness instead of celebrating scoring on his old team.. when he was pulled Betis fans gave him a standing ovation. thats why i love football.. its class.

good game Valencia.. i was finally entertained.

Hmmmm. Not sure how much of you guys are genuine Valencia fans but i will say this. Although Porto won the Champions league under Mourinho, who beat them in the Euro Super Cup? We did. Now im not knocking Mourinho, because his record for Chelsea is magnificent and im sad to see him leave the Premiership, but if you throw hundreds of millions of pounds at a manager to build a team stronger then even Billy Davies’s (Derby Manager) lot could conquer Europe. Are people still forgeting that Chelsea was a strong team before his arrival? We dont need Mourinho, as good as he is. What we need is to give Flores a chance to mature a very good team into a better one. Forget over-rated strikers and midfielders, young or even unknown players who are hungry to play and perform is what we need and im confident in the summer signings we made. This aint American Football or Basketball where fans get angry after 2 games, get pissed of with a low score result or change teams for the sake of it, This is football. You live support and die by one team, and am i right is stating that a manager is part of the club as well?

I agree that we need to support the manager but at what cost? Look, three years is enough time to better a team. If he can’t do it, someone else can.
And Mourinho wasn’t coach of that Porto side in the Super Cup. He was already at Chelsea, because Raineri was our coach. I believe Fernandez was Porto coach for that game.

    Son of Liberty,
Man am i so glad you posted. I try to tell Cesar the same thing but he’s yelling crisis after 2 games! You support your team and you live and die by what they do, no matter if they are fighting at the top or at the bottom(God forbid!). Support of the manager and of the club is whats great, you have to keep looking on the positive. If they loose? so what, next week they will win. They tie?, unlucky, next time we got them. Whatever it is, you stay by your teams side. But anyway, I love to stand by the club that has attracted me to watch them every chance i get.
I want Valencia to do good so bad, I even want to name my unborn child after them.
But FYI its a boy, so i cant. So Im gonna name him Johanes after the TOTAL FOOTBALL player… JOHAN CRUYFF.
Any help on the middle name? Would greatly appreciate it.

So you just follow the company line and never question what the club does? That’s silly, sorry … I love the club but I dont have to love what they do …
I will always stand by the club. But I cant blindly accept everything that the management does … but maybe I screamed crisis too soon, with this club, you never know.

    Franky how about Cesar? :)

Not blindly, cautiously before you go and jump the gun. Let them manage and do what they do and give a period of time to try to see if it will work, not 3 games. I also saw against Getafe, we have no need for Vicente, we’ve moved on. We only need Albelda as DMF and put Fernandes up to CMF or Attacking MidFielder, then you got it.

Funny cesar about the name, nice try but im tryin to give the boy a name of a soccer legend, i was thinkin PELE, MARADONA, Some greats, maybe ill just go with Quique? or maybe Kempes, or Romario. Sorry just rambling.

Fabio Capello went to Madrid and although he won the league, he was stupidly sacked because he left some overpaid tosser on the bench. That doesn’t mean he’s a crap manager, but with Capello, Ancelotti, and Ferguson having better records than Mourinho, (Even though they’ve been in the game a bit longer), why not hire one of theses pros? But what good would a high profile (and in Mourinho’s case might i add mildly ignorant)coach do for a re-strengthening team such as Valencia? What happenens if Mourinho takes us to the semis of the Champions League and we bow out to the likes of Lazio, PSV or Liverpool? “The best team lost!”?. Do we really need enemies? In my opinion, we need Vicente back because with the exit of Aimar, just like England had before, we have a problem with our left wing and i dont think Silva’s up to the job. We need a fast amd deadly left winger and thats what this guy is all about. Everytine this guy has played, Valecia has been on fire. He was key in the Cup double a few years back, and in my eyes the best player for those campaigns, and now that Joaquin is showing the class he portrayed in Betis colours two seasons ago, with midfielders like that we can rip Barca, Madrid, Man U and even AC Milan anytime we’re asked. The next time the transfer market opens, we should sign someone like Olufemi Martins, powerful, fast and a good 2nd option if need be. African players have proven to shine even in the toughest leagues of the World over the last 2 Decades, but could this be what’s in La Liga over all? I’m not saying that we should turn La Liga into the NFL or NBA but where are the Weahs, Taribo West’s, Daniel Amecachi’s and Kanu’s? I’m sure Stephen Sunday will grow to be a great player but must we focus on already made players? Madrid brought half their trophies with the names they brought in over the last decade but how many of them really made Madrid any greater other than Morientes, Casillas, Carlos and Raul? People talk about how we lost Snidjer, but who cares, again over-rated. What about Torres who at the moment is the best striker in the Premiership. Why did we let him go? Seems to me that most of Valencia’s troubles aren’t down to Flores but the Chairman of the club. So, lets keep Mr Quique because i like his honest and calm temperment, and at the same time give him some real money to buy some Brazilians or South Americans. Madrid have quite a few and so do Barcelona and Sevilla. A few future Messi’s or Ronaldo’s wouldn’t hurt would they?

Sons of Liberty, WOW! my friend,I thought your words sent shock waves through this Valencia blog. Your like Playin Politics in here. Im for QQ but against Vicente. Cesar the writer and his legion of crazy cult followers are For AGAINST Quique Sanchez(QQ) and FOR VICENTE! Your playin both sides in here.
I think your nuts to think that African players will do well for VALENCIA(you spelled it WRONG) simply b/c others in the past have done well in tough competitions. Martins is horrible in the premiership, we have PLENTY of Players that are deemed FWDs. Africans aren’t the only players that should be considered b/c of their countrymen’s past performance.
Also, Silva doesnt cut it for you? Come on man, wake up, hes a stud. His goal in champions league from the left side, his constant call up and production for the national team is good enough, his accurate passing and smart decision making is not cutting it for you? WELL SHIT, I tell you one thing about Silva has over VICENTE. SILVA will play every week and not get hurt the same game he returns. Im angered that the club has to continue to pay someone who doesn’t produce for them. He cant be healthy. Go ahead and get your hopes up on him to return and watch him get injured in the punishing, brutal and physical league that is LA LIGA! HA!
The club cant and wont attract a manager like Capello, Ancelotti b/c they dont want to come to Valencia and LOS CHE wont pay some ridiculous amount to bring them over. They are rather stingy on manager contracts. Also, they pick the transfers, not so much the manager. Not exactly an ideal place for a high-profile obsessively -controlling manager like the ones mentioned.
And last things, it seems like you have just landed on planet earth. El nino, wasnt going to play for Valencia, no way, if he wanted a La Liga team, it would be easy for him to go to REAL or BARCA, (your telling me real would pass him up for Saviola? get serious.) And if he was gonna stay in La Liga, Atletico would not sell him to rivals, he like Atletico, he’d want to stay there, and he wanted to play in the ChampionsLeague without hurting Atletico. Get with it man, your loco! And finally, Valencia is known historically for having a mostly dominant Spanish team, and their youth too. They don’t have the dominant youth academy like Barca to raise players to their potential. Never have. They’d want Spaniards first anyway. And of course having players like Messi join as kids, would make it a great place to be, you cant attract the best youngsters to join when they and you know that Barca has the best facilities and resources, why would they pick anywhere else?

If Mourinho comes to Valencia he will have the opportunity to succeed in both La Liga and the Champions League. We have a young, talented, commited, hungry squad, awaiting for someone intelligent enough to juice them up. We’ve won everything but the Champions League, where we’ve been runner-up twice. We are a big club. And we are demanding fans willing to see extraordinary things on the pitch. Plus the benefits of living in one of the most modern and dynamic cities of Spain, by the Mediterranian, where he’ll be able to enjoy amazing architecture and first class international events as the Formula One European Grand Prix or the America’s Cup. C’mon Mourinho! Take the challenge!!!
