The Most Important Game
By: Cesar | January 28th, 2009
Tomorrow’s the second leg of our Copa Del Rey quarterfinal clash against the Andalucian Nightmares, Sevilla FC.
While everyone and their mother agrees finishing in the Top 4 in Spain’s La Liga should be our top goal, it seems the heads of Our Beloved would rather reap the rather minimal rewards of winning the Copa at home.
2010 UEFA Europa League, anyone?
Whatever. It’s a tie we should win, considering our rebound from the most obvious offside in football history in the first leg (go to :58 to see the magic of Spanish officiating), which we gallantly won 3-2 at the Mestalla.
Goal.com has their oh-so-dead-on preview up, predicting another loss for our lads.
While I’d love for us to win, this concentration of the Copa is downright maddening.
How about doing well in the league first, eh?
David Villa will not play in the match, so it seems his knock was more about injury than rest.
Joining Villa on the sidelines will be Renan, Alexis, Albiol, Curro Torres and Del Horno.
So maybe we’ll see the likes of Joaquin, Mata and Vicente. You know, because this is an important game and all.
Can you sense the amount of urgency I’m seeing in this match?
I know. It should be an entertaining affair. I’ll do my best to watch it before my Metallica show tomorrow evening. I just don’t see the need to win this competition again when 4th place and a chance at next season’s Champions League would be much more beneficial to the club. But what do I know?
Courtesy of our 3-2 win in the first leg, a draw and we’re through to the semis. Might as well go for the jugular, right?
Coach Unai Emery seems to think so.
“The team always plays to win. Sometimes it works out well, sometimes it doesn’t. The score is good for us, but I don’t want us to go and try to draw. Another way is to be intelligent and to try to attack in a more stable way. Everything that you can add to the scoreline is good, and we’ll be trying to win,” he told Spanish filth AS.
“I expect a Sevilla side that will come out to win, just like us. I expect a very flowing game, that has all the factors to be a good match, a lot of fight and spirit, that will be like a final, because whoever loses is out. Therefore we’ll confront it as a final.”
What about the absence of Villa?
“Villa is an important player, but not more so than the team. He’s not ready to play and we need everyone to be in top condition, so we go with players who are fit,” he declared.
Emery also said that he believes his team will turn things around after their defeat to Mallorca at the weekend, and that he doesn’t regret letting Nikola Zigic, Timo Hildebrand or Iván Helguera go.
“Each situation has reasons, and a decision must be made. That is what happened in the cases of Hildebrand and Helguera. In the case of Zigic there was a possibility of staying, of keeping him here, but he’s always had Villa and [Fernando] Morientes in front. He’s a great boy (dinosaur?) and a great player and I’m glad he’s doing well at Racing,” he confirmed.
Aside from that, Valencia’s never-ending soap opera continues.
First, Spanish network Telecinco is offering Our Beloved 275 million Euros over 5 years for the rights to our matches.
Not a bad chunk of change. And it’s coming at a pretty good time, what with the club hemorrhaging money.
Next, Juan Soler’s daddy Bautista wants Vicente Soriano to know he’s got until the end of the month to get his finances in order. Or else.
Uggh. This causing anyone else indigestion?
Finally, what’s this about Sevilla wanting bat meat?
The fun never ends, does it? AMUNT!!!

Hi, Just one point as many of you missed the match either that or poor viewing at the end, I should like to repeat what I said on my last post, the importance of possession and especially with throw ins (we seem to delight in throw aways) Valencia had the game won 2 mins from the end, they had a throw in near the Seville goal, nobody near enough to take it, went to a Seville guy and the ball immediately was down our end, came the corner and the goal.In the last minutes of a game, keep the ball and they cant score or at least attack their goal which they could have done if they had kept possession, we should at least been forcing a corner at their end.
I personally didnt see any great things from Caesar.Last week Guaita let in 2 like Caesar but had to deal with many more good shots and stopped 10 out of 12. As it looks like Caesar is the new kid on the block, I hope that when Renan returns, Valencia will have the decency to put Guaita back to help out our 2nd team, it is essential he gets the practice, he could be good but he has sat on the bench for 18 games you cant advance like that……AlmendrasPosted from

I was upset to see Valencia lose this game. I wanted to see them win the Copa again, but I guess that isn’t happening. I couldn’t believe that we lost the game right at the end of the game. I couldn’t see the match, but I saw the notification on valenciacf.com. We have a really big problem with these last minute losses and ties.
As for the league, Valencia are falling behind, with recent ties and last minute losses that have been happening all too often. I’m hoping that Villa and Renan come back soon. Without them its going be very difficult to win a game, as it was just proved against Mallorca, a game we really should have been able to win without Villa and Renan. Its sad to know our other players couldn’t hold their own against a team like Mallorca, and it wasn’t a close game either. We need better midfielders, and a stronger back line, and also not to mention a better back-up keeper. We also need to see some goals from Mata and Silva.
At this point, the only way I can see Valencia winning the league is if Real Madrid and Barca drop points in March, especially when the Champions league gets tough. I’m still hoping they win first place, and I’m hoping that El Guaje gets top scorer of the league! He’s a better striker than Eto’o and Messi anyway.
I’m hoping that Valencia win the UEFA Cup as well. They’re going to have to work hard against Dynamo Kyiv. Its going to get pretty tough, and their players are going to have to stay healthy.

our problem this season has been from the set pieces corners or basically crosses coming in and lately almost every other game we have conceeded a penalty..
the game against bilbao..all the 3 goals were such situations..the penalty was won from the corner..atletico madrid’s goal was from penalty..villareal scored the first goal from corner nd the third form peanlty..
though some of the penalty decisions have been soft the foul was committed..it was not horrendous refree decisions like that of jaunfran..
when ayala was there hardly any goals were scored from such situations..to certain extent even alexis did the job very well..the worst part is other clubs seem to know this and sevilla exploited our lack of confidence completely..the second half in the king’s cup,the amount of headers(or crosses into the box) they had compared to the direct shots was like 100 to 0..
the sad thing is this has become even more pronounced because we hardly score goals form corners..P.S maybe this has something to do with tall defenders??..alexis is short compared to albiol maduro ..so was ayala

Erm, you have scored 3 or 4 goals from corner situations. Thats not loads but its some. Ayala was only small but he had a huge leap, nobody would outjump him not even Zigic. Could have a point about it being a weakness defensively, Marchena, Alexis and Albiol – none of them are known to attack the ball agressively when its in the air like Vidic or Terry for example.
Blackburn could use a player like Viana so that deal should go through.

Hi Ali, as you say Fernando has announced that two English Premier teams are interested in Viana and Del Horno. They have up untill Monday night to do the deal. The Spanish signing slot however closes tonight and Fernando says he is signing nobody. Now I know a lot of posts here have said bad things about Del Horno and poor Viana has hardly had a chance although what little I remember from early Copa matches I thought he was very useful in view of his lack of opportunities. Now however low you rate these players I do not see the sense of getting rid of them without replacements, for me another example of strange decisions from the ‘experts”
Injuries happen all the time. Fabiano is off injured for 2 weeks, Pujol is off for 10 days and Rossi is off for 2 weeks and that last one was a clash in training. In just over a fortnights time we will be in the Uefa fight in Kiev 5 to 8 degrees below and with 2 games a week again. We need all the players we have got surely…AlmendrasPosted from

I’m hungover and now mad (again) that we lost on Thursday. Sevilla definitely played better than us on Thursday, but it’s just fucking maddening to lose because of such a SHITTY offsides call. Anyway, I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: If someone wants to give us more than about 60 million for Villa, I’d sell him.

Well at any rate, if we’re gonna sell him, we can’t sell him at the end of this transfer period without making any other moves. It’d be better to sell him in summer when we can actually buy some people! But I hope we don’t sell him.

bernie e is a hard nosed muver.he loves the city of valencia though, so who knows
is his envolvment with qpr sentimental or financial, any bat know? i thought some other rich bloke was qpr owner? or is that the rugby bit ?
not related but i nearly worked for his mate Paddy McNally but he had false heels on his shoes so i turned him down ( true ) i could have been very rich instead of an impovrished spanish gardener.

Eccleston is one of several owners of QPR, and not even the richest one. Not sure they’ve put loads of money into the club. But maybe Eccleston wants a club of his own rather than a shared project.
