The End of an Era
By: Cesar | May 1st, 2008Valencia CF fight their way through the last four matches of the season, clawing past relegation and into next season’s La Liga.
They sell their top players, bring in a mediocre (aka cheap) coach who’s never really won anything and dabble in mid-table obscurity for the next few seasons, developing players for the ‘Big’ teams to buy …
Wow, how times have changed, eh??
What an absolute nightmare this season’s been …
Last season, we were talking about being a ‘Big Team’ ourselves. We were building a new stadium, reveling in our young players like Silva and Mata, thinking of future glories and European hardware.
Now, we’re turning into another horror story, a ‘What If?’ or a ‘What happened to them?’
We’re turning into Leeds United. Not to knock them down, but think about it …
Because this issue hits so close to home, I’m not sure I can express myself the way I’d like to … this news comes like a punch to the gut.
It’s like the directors of the club are telling us, ‘I hope you enjoyed yourselves. But the fun’s over. Time to pay up.’
The debt is piling up. There’s no money for new players.
We’re building a new stadium so the developers, who obviously made bad business decisions, need money. How do you get it? Sell our best asset: Players!
Unreal.
Here’s what other people are saying about the plight of our club … they express themselves MUCH better than I ever could …
Sarita over on Che-UK says:
Marcelino and Valencia had a verbal agreement. There was a meeting this week and
talks fell through. This seems to have been because:- He wanted full control of sporting matters;
- He had a list of players he wanted us to keep and others he wanted us to
transfer, but there may have been a disagreement here too;
- He wanted to bring in certain players, but it seems we don’t have the budget. This is all very depressing.
Worst still the idea that Manzano is the new top choice. Why, oh why, oh why the
heck is that the case? I was pleased to hear one paper saying Caparrós is on the
list, although still. What has happened? A few weeks ago we were saying Benítez
and now it’s Manzano?? I would prefer Emery to Manzano. He doesn’t even fit the
profile! Where’s the “young” in Manzano? And he’s been around for ages, what big
triumph has he achieved?? What happened to Lippi, Deschamps, et al?Now, it’s not that we’re actually going to sell V, S and J, but they will be put
on the market. As far as Joaquín is concerned, well, not that I’d be gutted if
he left. But: we paid 18m for him, are we really gonna make a profit? Is this
wise from a business perspective? Where would he go?Villa: If we think 20m EUROS is a good price for the guy, less than Modric to
Tottenham as someone here said the other day, then someone at Valencia needs a
reality check. Villa ONLY needs to go for very big money. And that means 40m
POUNDS. If he’s so great and all these wealthy clubs are after him, why is that
so difficult to ask for? Otherwise Villa’s under contract and he should stay.Silva: Big big big big mistake. Just the other day Raúl was saying what a
gifted, promising talent he is. And you know what we’ll do, we’ll sell him for
peanuts! No no no, Valencia! Does anyone here know any Board members? Please do
something!!Plus, as Miguel says, this shows we lack amibition. It all says here’s a club
who is in financial difficulty (and therefore would accept any measly cash sum
cos we’re desperate). Does anyone at Valencia have a brain? Does anyone know
what discretion is? No! Just tell the whole world our problems. Stupid stupid
stupid.I’m getting very fed up.
Me too. Great commentary.
Check out this one by Dan, also at Che-Uk. He tries to compare Valencia to an English club.
I was trying to explain to a friend who supports Spurs about our
situation, but naturally he didn’t know who Manzano was. So i tried
to come up with an English alternative.I dont know how accurate it is now, but i said this:
Imagine if, when Spurs sacked Martin Jol, instead of going for Juande
Ramos, they brought in Neil Warnock. Then they told him “You need to
sell Aaron Lennon, Berbatov and Jenas to fund new players”He said “It can’t be that bad”
can anyone come up with a better Premiership alternative?
Every day i wake up and wonder where we would be if Quique had been
given the whole season, and then Marcelinho could quietly take over
in summer. But now everyone in Europe looks at La Liga table and says “Blimey,
look at Valencia down there” and they look at newspapers and websites
and see that we have no cash, and yet foolishly attempted to build a
stadium, the oppulence of which would be more suited to the likes of
Man Utd or The England national team, and they see we are supposedly
selling Villa, Silva, Joaquin etc, and now they see that, on top of
Mourinho, Capello and whoever else not wanting to come in October,
now we can’t even get Marcelinho, and have turned to Manzano. The
Spanish Neil Warnock. This downgrades us from “Spanish Giants” to “What happened to that
Valencia” just like people over here now talk about Depor.“Didn’t Rivaldo play for them before he went to Barca?”
“Didn’t Villa play for Valencia before he went to ?????”“Wow look at the great players they’ve had over the years, and look
at them now”
Great comments both … poignant and tell the story MUCH better than I ever could …
Let’s hope all of this is just rumor and gossip right now.
Let’s hope they’re not tearing the heart and soul of our club up just for money.

Like Daniel and others, I’m at a loss for words. I gasped when I saw the first article at goal.com–this has to be nonsense, I thought. Then my Norwegian friend–a ManU fan no less–emailed me an article from the Sun, and I started to believe it. Although I’ve somewhat begun to cope with the fact that my favorite player on earth, “el guaje”, will be leaving this summer–and my dream of seeing him in action next spring, during my trip to the new Mestalla, will not happen–to sell Joaquin and Silva as well is a dagger through the heart. Aside from the fact that Joaquin is one of the most talented wingers on earth and just needs a good coach to fully bring the best of him, and that Silva is a young phenom–not to mention the fact that I paid a shit-load of euros on for an authentic Silva jersey before this season, and it could be worthless in August–we had a down year, to put it mildly, and to buy high and sell low is idiotic from a business perspective. Now, everyone will know that we’re desperate to offload our big stars because of debt and will propose a lot less for our players than they’re worth. This is a f’n nightmare. I can see the advertisement now: venga a la nueva mestalla para ver los galacticos Sunny y Arizmendi! Who sells their best and most popular players right before the opening of a new stadium? What business school did these morons go to? Unfortunately, I will succumb and go to the new stadium next spring because of my love for the club, but I’m not gonna feel completely right about it. The other reader, who plays fifa, and I should be on the board. We would run the squad like in fifa 08’s manager mode: get good players and know how to add and subtract–genius! Wow, I just went on a very long rant, I’m sorry guys. The club has even started affecting my writing abilities. I hate you management–JODATE!

It’s unbelievable how much damage Koeman and a clueless board can combine to do. I knew Valencia were in debt but I also know that they had a healthy cash pile behind it - although I believe they spent it all on a new stadium (thank goodness Koeman appears to be satisfied with his compensation package!).
Comparisons with Leeds are harsh - I highly doubt Valencia have to sell their entire first team and reserves as they did. But I have a feeling that after selling the club’s “Crown Jewels” and top youngsters, there isn’t going to be much money to replace them.
And a club in distress has no bargaining rights in transfers - David Villa to Tottenham, 20 million Euros (as opposed to pounds, as would be a sensible figure) - who’d've thought? The worst part is that if 20 million Euros becomes the price for David Villa, everyone will be swarming over Valencia knowing they need cash, and unfortunately, there could be a time when the club will say “Yes” rather than “No”.
About the loan out, I think it’s got to the point where the team need short-term money and a loan will only help in the medium-term.
Valencia needed Europe, failed to get it and that’s one big gamble. Valencia went all-in with a good hand - it turns out the rest of the players had better ones.

Does anyone have some insight into the financial situation of Valencia or are those wishy-washy bits of information from the press all there is to it? How much is the new stadium costing Valencia? Are there other debts and how could they spent €60m on players this season in such a situation?

Now reading on goal.com that Voro says he won’t mind being coach next season if he gets the chance, and that this team can “improve”. (improve.. finish 12th next season instead of 14th)
Unbloody-believable… pretty soon there’ll be a total clear out and you all will be seeing me, Timothy and Cesar in Valencia kit runnin around at the Mestalla, because they’d hardly be able to attract anybody else to the sinking ship

Ali, it’s okay mate, people are allowed to have whatever name they want. Your posts have become pretty familiar to any regular reader. Plus you country comes up as UAE whereas the other Ali comes up as whatever country you are in (I believe). That’s sort of like asking all the Ronaldo’s of the world to change their names.
On the point at hand, yes Villa will go. But he has to go (IMO) for at minimum 25 million pound, no less. Joaquin may leave but I reckon either Gavilan or P Hernandez will be able to fill his spot. Silva, I don’t think has much chance of going. He is simply too much of an awesome proposition to Valencia.
While I understand our debts are bad, they cant be that bad if we buy players like Banega for 18 million (as far a I remember). While I think we can all agree Soler is a fat money hungry idiot, I don’t believe he is financially dumb enough to spend 18 mil when we areas bad off as being reported.

Look Valencia has been in over their heads in the financial board room for the longest time. It’s about time they try to set things straight. Their saving grace is the new Mestalla, but that is years away.
Manzano is not that bad. He has done pretty well with Mallorca and is new blood at least to Los Che. Of course i would rather get Marcellino or Emery but it looks like Sevilla, Atleti and others are after our main targets.
Oddly Manzano was a professor before he was a coach back in the day, so he has the teaching talent and psychology experience in his bag of tracks. Sounds like a decent fit for our team. He won the Copa Del Rey with Mallorca. Hmmm. Let’s wait and see.

Oops, my bad, just found this blog and decided to give my views.
Like a lot of clubs, the amount of money spent doesn’t necessarily mean the money is there - it could be a long-term deal or could be dependent on the club doing well and having European football for next season. Clubs like Manchester United and Arsenal are heavily tied to their performance - one bad season and it’s difficult to recover.
I saw a report that Voro doesn’t want to stay and wants to go back behind-the-scenes? Don’t blame him, actually, if he does go back behind-the-scenes he’ll at least have a stable job.

Ali, that’s a little too much there. Anyway, there’s the different national flag thingo at the bottom to differentiate between you all, as well as the writing style… Nobody could ever mistake you for someone else…
Well, just reading this post makes me angry. How could it be that such a big club, that earns so much from broadcasting rights and what-all go into the red in such a short time. I only started following Valencia in the middle of last year, so I wouldn’t know the long story that must be behind this all. However, I’m certain that at the very bottom, from a long time ago, something must have been festering at the heart. And it’s just this bad season that’s thrown appearances off their precarious balance. The emperor has no clothes.
I remember, I started liking Valencia because I liked Villa from what I saw of him during WC06, and then I looked VCF up and found that they had a great team and the rare policy of actually nurturing young talent whether from within the youth team or bought from outside. I thougyht then that within the next few years they would have a truly outstanding team made up of players who belonged to the club in every sense. Turns out we won’t be seeing that, at least for a long time.
You’ve drawn out a terribly dreary but frighteningly convincing portrait of the situation at the club. But I’m wondering if the management could have kept the information of their desperate financial straits from getting out. At least that way the club could possibly have bargaining power (if they could also get the players to shut up for awhile).

Nothing meant there. Ok, it was a ‘joke’. Bit hard to tell on the internet. I personally agree to forget about it.
