The Best Game of the Season
By: Cesar | January 10th, 2009
Derbies don’t often disappoint. And the Valencian derby between Valencia CF and Villarreal certainly didn’t, in what has to go down as the Best Game in Spain’s La Liga 2008-09.
Talk about a barbed-wire, steel cage match.
This was a barn burner. A good, old-fashioned Pier 6 brawl with the kitchen sink thrown in for good measure.
It was 90 minutes of pure bliss, neutral or otherwise. Of course, it would have been better had we won. But 3-3 and a delicious spectacle of the Beautiful Game isn’t bad either.
It started off with a slight surprise, as coach Unai Emery decided to use David Albelda as a makeshift right-back, following the suspension of alleged murderer Miguel. Many of the Mestalla faithful groaned, but could you think of any better options? Maduro? Del Horno? Curro Torres?
Off we went and from the start, Valencia looked like Brazil ‘70. With the first attack of the game, Joaquín’s cross from the left found 87-year old Ruben Baraja, who headed home with ease.
But that’s not all. We attacked and attacked, our defense reacting solidly and our offense looking sublime.
Villarreal’s Yellow Submarine weren’t out of it, though. Ariel Ibagaza almost equalized right after the goal. His chip nearly caught Renan out, but the keeper managed to tip over the bar. A melee ensued from the resulting corner, but Valencia somehow managed to clear off the line.
Our offensive wave capitalized in the 10th minute, when Our Beloved got their second. Albelda played David Villa in on the right with an absolutely brilliant pass, and El Guaje faked before shooting in at the near post. An absolutely beautiful goal off an incredible pass … 2-0 after 10 and all looked well at the Mestalla.
But of course, you know how these things have a way of changing …
Chance after chance went off kilter for Valencia. A shot by David Silva flew over the cross bar. Mata came inches from scoring.
The scoreline could have been 5-0. But alas, it was not to be.
In first half extra time, Villarreal’s corner found its way to Fabricio Fuentes, who had only come on for the injured Gonzalo, and he duly headed in from six yards, to set up an intriguing second half.
2-1 and although we were on top, Villarreal looked lean and mean.
The second half told a different tale. The Albelda experiment at left back, which worked so succinctly in the first half, came to a disastrous end, as almost every Yellow attack came down Albelda’s side.
Still, they had nothing to show for it … in the 66th minute, we came close to scoring when a long throw found its way to Mata, whose bicycle kick (chilena) flew just over the cross bar. Five minutes later, Villa should have sealed the game, but he somehow contrived to tap Silva’s cross over the bar.
Unfortunately, we didn’t score. And Santi Cazorla made us pay. The Spanish international with no ambition released Paco Llorente down the left, and while Llorente’s initial shot was blocked by Renan, he pounced on the rebound from an even tighter angle, smashing the ball into the roof of the net.
But not all was lost as Edu came in and not only didn’t injure himself, but headed a pass by Mata into the net. 3-2 and all looked well again. The Mestalla sighed.
Ahh, but this is Valencia. And nothing comes easy to Los Che.
In the 82nd minute, Joaquin attempted to defend Santi Cazorla and inadvertently touched the international, who went down like a sniper shot him. It was a penalty and New Jersey’s own Giuseppe Rossi slotted home for their 3rd goal.
A few chances here, a few chances there and 3-3 was the final in Spain’s best game of the season …
Honestly, we played about as well as we could have, what with Albiol and Moretti leaving injured (or so I think), Miguel in jail, Alexis injured and Curro Torres collecting tips at Manolo’s. In other words, our defense was a shambles.
Our offense picked up the slack for much of the match. Villa was impressive and Silva’s creative touch is something we lacked during long stretches of the first half of the season.
Joaquin looked like the Real Betis Joaquin and even Moretti tried to do his best Cristiano Ronaldo impression, running into the box with the ball.
It was a good effort. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough.
We lack that killer instinct, that will to drive the final nail into the other team’s coffin. Still, we played better than we have most of the season.
Give it to Unai and his staff: They’ve made Valencia into an exciting club to watch.
Now why don’t they play this way against the Real Madrid’s and Barcelona’s of the world? Those games, we sit back and wait for them to pressure. Against Villarreal, we took it to them and came away 2-0 up after 10 minutes.
Did we get tired? I don’t know … obviously, something’s missing. Maybe defenders? Still, it was a partidazo for the ages …
So how did we do in our big stretch of the season?
We started against Sevilla and tied 0-0, then hosted Betis, who we beat 3-2.
It was off to the Nou Camp, where we were crushed 4-0 and then we hosted Barca’s other club, Espanyol, who we defeated 2-1.
After that, Real Madrid knicked us 1-0. But we knicked Atletico 3-1 in a fun affair.
Today’s game was 3-3 …
So that’s 3 wins, 2 losses and 2 draws. 11 out of 21 points … aggh … nothing to write home about. But we’re alive, still in the hunt for a Champions League spot …
So what do you all think? Game of the season or a lost opportunity? Or both??

@ bob
and about the economic / capitalist thing, certainly banks are not spending much right now, they are still licking their wounds mate from all the losses they have had (UBS is getting fucked again hehe). Lack of confidence between banks means less loans, less capital, European banking institutions are certainly not spending their money. Only place there is a lot of money now is at the local banks, but they usually don’t invest in such big projects, plus the Arabs as always have their black gold which could buy up half of Europe, guess they are our only hope… Saludos, a Keynesian

Public hearing of the president, Vicente Soriano
After the reunion of the Board of DirectorsValencia CF’s president, Vicente Soriano, has appeared in the press room of the Camp de Mestalla, after the Governing Council meeting held on Monday, January 12.
The president of Valencia CF
“I’m here to send a message loud and clear throughout the Valencian. I come before you because I am worried about the Valencia CF. Or remain in the presidency, not me. Valencia is important. If I had the slightest doubt my ability to achieve the goals or understand that we are doing a bad job, it would be the first to leave. Not so, I am hopeful and fully supported by all members of the administration, absolutely everyone.
When I came to the presidency knew about the economic situation of the club. It was then and remains now very sensitive. No hot towels. I had two possible ways. The first was to sell the best players and work with less financial pressure, reducing the level of sporting equipment and giving up being among the best. Could always have said that I was obliged to do so. Rather than waste time pointing to possibly responsible or refugees, or that our management was not the cause of the complicated situation, I have been concerned and worried of working together with all employees of the society, and especially with my board administration, reversing the delicate situation.
I chose, however, the second possible path. A more difficult for us but I think necessary and positive for Valencia. Was to move forward without having to sell our stars and go for a winning team. Clear that a club should know to buy and sell their players, but that was not the time, as has been demonstrated, but of course I have many more difficulties in my efforts and many sleepless nights. I chair a company, but also a feeling that there is hope for the millions of fans have. Without illusions we will not have anything. The hard work we have done is about to crystallize. I repeat. And I think, and we ask for anyone who thinks otherwise would be due one year of responsibility resulted in patience. Either that, or submit their solutions. I know how our efforts and I’m not unconscious. We will succeed. But if someone who is believed to have out there other solutions I invite you to become involved in this project: listen to any input. Valencia need all possible help and unity, not ever need rocks in the road. I would also recall that when I arrived at the club had three key challenges:
First, Make the players believe in this project and get back to the first level sports team after a season where he struggled to avoid the drop in class until the penultimate day. Our message caló in the staffing and have achieved stability and tranquility. Valencia went through to the players and coaches, 18 days in 18 disputed seats Champions. We remain alive in the UEFA Cup and the Copa del Rey. Unai and the players have shown they want to participate and play in Valencia. All decisions taken sports also have moved away from fantasy and have a clear direction: to strengthen our coach and to have the best tools and proper environment to achieve the objectives.Second, I marked during the summer, the challenge to overcome a difficult economic situation unsold footballers or paralyze the work of the new stadium. No need taking into account the serious crisis affecting the global real estate sector, I pledged to sell the site of the old Mestalla later this year. I have already recognized, and I do, I was wrong at the time, but at the same time challenge that helped stabilize and provide confidence to the entire Valencia. I firmly stand by and let you know our shareholders and our fans, not only that the operation is underway but that it is committed and will become effective soon. However, that real estate is not the extraordinary mana. Must be strictly on a daily basis to change the tradition of recent years in deficit. Since July, the club is managed from the rigor and the budget cut. Without exaggeration, we have not spent a euro without thinking or if you really had to spend it. We opted for players in the economy but good performance. Our efforts, and I say our because they started from scratch in the summer are advanced two television operators, with three companies providing sports equipment and a sponsor. They do not sell smoke, I repeat that negotiations are being avanzadísimas and we need some time to close the operations. In any case, I must warn the hastily close if they do not meet business expectations that we have, however much he would be easy for us to accept unfavorable conditions, but we guarantee immediate liquidity. I insist that what matters is the Valencia. I want to stress that we have achieved in five months to convince Unibet bet for us that despite having to share with Valencia shirt Experience, reaching agreements with leading brands like Loewe, Mercedes or phone subscribers get two thousand more, to prepare within fifteen days the sale of reserves for the new stadium, to implement the system of free entry, create a new, modern website or achieve the granting of the final of the Copa del Rey for Mestalla. All in five months: Here we have not lost time.
The third objective we had set was to suture the wounds society. Valencia, in the last year had so many seizures that until there was a gap between our hobby. On Saturday, and was the great triumph of the night, returning Mestalla proved to be a voice. The team, the club and its fans again have a full communion. Valencia is all and returns to all. From within the club and has been generated or generate any controversy. Our news is good and their successes. Again be a source of pride for our fans. On the street there is hope and peace, and I tell the fans and I feel. I thank every fan, every peñista, each shareholder support and behavior. I think, frankly, that our family was broken very recently and now is strong in its unity. Therefore, I would start returning to the influence and repeat a basic idea: think of Valencia, please. We have no intention of abandoning the project, no. And not because we are confident our efforts and our work and I am sure that no one hinder the way. Valencia and their fans are too important to have someone play with your future. I moltes gràcies Amunt València.
Evaluation of the board on Monday, January 12
“I am proud to say that I am in the Council, not only to people understanding, but smart. It has not been very laborious, but if I would say, calmly explained the position. I hope everyone understands and with all others, so that I can not say that I had to convince themselves are convinced. ”
Appearance in the press room of the Camp Counselor Benjamin Munoz
“Today we have the sufficient explanation of the economic management of Valencia CF. We have come closer than ever, thinking that the most important is the Valencia CF and totally satisfied with the explanations of the president.

well hopefully this will be the last meeting and now everybody is on the same page. i just find it strange that there would be so much politics and intrigue over the running of a football club… board members allegiance should be to the club and not Soler or Soriano having the board divided into Soler and Soriano factions will only hurt the cub by causing bickering over decisions. Valencia’s needs everybody to work together right now so it can get back to stability.

Jeez, this is like a Obama speech…
He certainly persuaded me! I have trust in Soriano, always had. Amunt!Posted from

@ bob
guess no need to take out Soler (yet), or we could just do it for the fun of it but it might be too much trouble afterwards
Anyway i still have certains things against mr Soriano, but he is the best we have at this moment so i also give him my full support! Hope everything will work out as forseen, we so have to!!!

Well I dont think any of us can argue..he did achieve a lot of things in the 5-6 months he’s been president. They really have tried as much as they can to help our economic situation.
However, we still need that buyer to finalize the sale….Is the buyer having second thoughts? Or are there two buyers? Or is the buyer just trying to come up with money due to the financial situation?
The board seems to be really convinced now for some reason, what do they know that we dont know?

@ Fayez
they probably know everything and we don’t haha. But i keep asking, which gain would they have if they tell these stories but they would not be true in the end?? Nothing, they would gain nothing at all so i guess we will have to trust them than… Still with second thoughts in the back of my mind but we have no other chance and in these so-called difficult economic times i can imagine them to be careful and also having difficulties finding a buyer, but i dont beliebe they would lie to everybody about such a thing…Posted from

Btw it now seems Soler has given Soriano 15 days to sell Mestalla and to pay the bills until that time, including paying Soler for 37% of the shares. If he doesnt succeed in doing this, than the 31st of January will be Soriano’s last day at VCF. All this according to Superdeporte…

Technically what can Soler do? He cant really remove Soriano if the other board of directors arent with him (I mean he only has 37% of the shares).

@ Fayez, well he did have 3 Directors yesterday that supported him bringing this meeting but I dont know whether or not they are big shareholders. The strange thing here is all the secrecy. Soriano states he will close the sale of Mestalla by 28th of this month, and Soler then will not be committed to making any more payments. He had a separate meeting with Soler in the morning and said everything is fine between them. When asked if he would be returning his shares to Soler, he said the deadline was not 31st Dec as people think but are subject to other conditions that are secret. The trouble is that with nothing in the open we may be reading a lot of whitewash….Almendras
