Takin’ It To The Streets

By: Cesar | August 22nd, 2008

There’s a buzz on the streets of Valencia this weekend that has nothing to do with our beloved Valencia CF. What could it possibly be?

If you’re an F-1 Formula One racing fan, you know that Valencia hosts the European Grand Prix this weekend, an opportunity for the city to show off a little, show the world how far they’ve come the last few years.

Truth be told, it’s a gorgeous city and I implore all of you to make it out there when you can.
From the beaches to the wonderful food, from the great weather to the great people, you can’t really go wrong.

And if all indications are correct, you might see one of the better football clubs around in Unai Emery’s Valencia CF.

I watched the first leg of the Spanish Super Copa again a few days ago and I must admit I’m impressed with the way we looked. Great attacking form, wonderful off the counter attack, decent creativity up front. This team looks solid and disciplined.

The defense is somewhat creaky. The goal tending leaves something to be desired. We’re not perfect. But we’re getting better.

This weekend sees us in Madrid’s Santiago Bernabeu stadium for the second leg and hopefully, our second trophy of the new season (first being the Trofeo Naranja).

“Last season, we were never able to raise our heads whenever we went behind. But that is not the case anymore,” defender Alexis explained.

“Now, we don’t collapse when we concede a goal and we know how to fight back,” he added.

Despite giving away two potential decisive away goals, the former Getafe center back was still encouraged by the performance from the rearguard.

“Our defense had a complicated game (against Madrid), but we knew how to maintain our line and if we continue to work on it, we will start to see good results,” he stressed.

“The return leg will be difficult, but if we play like we did in the first leg and approach the game with a winner’s mentality, then we will not have any problems winning the Supercopa,” he concluded.

Let’s hope so.

87-year old Ruben Baraja thinks we’ll be just fine at the Bernabeu.

“We must approach the match with the idea that we have a real chance to win the Supercopa,” he exclaimed to Marca.

“We have to go there and be ambitious and build on our first leg result rather than just depend on it.”

But the retirement-home bound midfielder is also aware of the daunting task of having to take on Real Madrid at the Bernabéu cauldron.

“They will definitely play better at home than they did at the Mestalla. They are now a side that focuses on the aspect of team work but they still have a lot of quality individual players who can turn the game around,” he warned.

Finally, the midfielder cautioned not to put too much pressure and emphasis on the club making a swift return to the Champions League.

“It is important to take things slowly one step at a time. It is necessary to remember that we are practically starting from scratch. Right now, we have to focus on the possibility of winning an important title and begin the new league campaign with confidence,” he concluded.

I like the things the players are saying. I like Unai’s coaching style and the confidence the team seems to be exuding when they go down, unlike last season’s Koeman debacle. This truly is a different team.

Another thing I am encouraged about is the recruitment philosophy sporting director Fernando Gomez is talking about in today’s Superdeporte. Basically, buy smart, buy young, buy like Arsene Wenger at Arsenal does. It makes sense when you’re competing against the financial beasts of Real Madrid and Barcelona. A team can’t hope to lure the talent they do. A team has to buy smarter, buy a David Silva and develop him, sign a Juan Mata and watch him blossom. I think it’s a smart move and Arsenal are definitely a club I’d like to see us emulate.

One young guy I’d love to see stay is adult film star and Argentine midfield phenom Ever Banega. Unfortunately, it looks like he’s on his way on loan to Atletico Madrid. I guess this is a good thing. At least he’ll play and develop. And we’ll still hold his rights.

Unai saw enough of the squad to settle on a four-man midfield that excluded Banega: David Albelda, Rubén Baraja, Manuel Fernandes and Edu have all been given the thumbs up to become the heart and soul of the Ché midfield, leaving youngsters Hedwiges Maduro and Banega as surplus to requirements.

Banega’s off to Madrid. Maduro? Who knows. Maybe we can get a bag of used footballs for him?

A sad note to close: Condolences to all who lost their lives in the horrific air accident that took place in Madrid this week. Horrible and truly shows you how short life is.

Hércules and Valencia postponed their match, which Valencia had already traveled to attend, out of respect for the “pain of the families and loved ones of the accident’s victims.”

Classy move.

As for me, I’m looking for new work. All suggestions and ideas will be greatly appreciated.
A chain of football pubs? Could be an interesting idea …

i’m fucking ashamed. no other word to describe it: ashamed. played scared the whole match. the only goal chance was silva’s goal. this is so damn disappointing. now they’re gonna be hungover for the mallorca match – even better. was koeman at the game?

When is the Mallorca match anyway?
I don’t know if Koeman was there, but I’m sure if he was he’d be delighted to see that Valencia lost. He always wanted to ruin us anyway.

The defence were an utter shambles at times. As soon as Van Nistelrooy went it was then time to put them away, but no, we end up getting hammered. Shocking.

Well tonights Valencia side was nothing different from Koemans Valencia, what a dreadful game and what a shameful appearance from our leaders. If its up to me, we would have kept Banega instead of Albelda, and play that dude! He got cojones! Anyway, im tired, tired of Valencia without heart. I mean, i dont care if Valencia loses or wins, as long as they fight for every ball, every inch, every duel. This, is just pathetic

Valencia weren’t as bad as many of you make them seem to be, this team was certainly miles better than the team of Koeman’s era. What I think happened today is that the players fell asleep at halftime. Unlike last week where we were down by 1 at the half and came out fighting, today we were up by a goal and a player and got complacent. Timo absolutely needs some competition from Renan, and Alexis needs a spell on the bench for that crap for the 4th goal. Still, we should still be in pretty good shape this season if Renan is in good form and if Marchena can help develop Alexis and to a lesser extent Albiol a bit more.

Daniel it was worse than under Koeman at least then there was the excuse that the politics at the club was effec ting the football, what was the excuse today? Timo was probably Valencia’s best defensive player in that game he made No mistakes don’t blame this defeat on a player because you don’t like him… Alexis could have done nothing to stop that shot defensive midfielders (Albelda) are supposed to protect the defense from people pushing forward from midfield and counter attacks but Albelda disappeared in the second half. the people who are the most experienced and were supposed to have been there before and who the younger players are supposed to look up to for guidance (Albelda & Baraja)took no leadership roles at all and played worse than some of the younger players they did not help Moretti and they did not even try to calm a nervous defense with two inexperienced center backs. it was shameful.

daniel’s right: despite the loss, however excruciating it was, this team is better than koeman’s. as i said earlier, we were scared – complacent on top of that. we sorely missed marchena today. it did seem like every shot was a deflection off of timo. he certainly does need competition from brito. i’ve just now settled down after the loss – i was livid. but emery is a good coach, and he’ll have us ready for next weekend’s match with mallora. if we’re not, i’m gonna be even more livid.

Even under Koeman Valencia never soundly 9 men! a single long range shot from Roben was deflected because there was too much pace on for it to be held (the ball rebounded about four meters), there were no other deflections, in the eyes of a biased fan one deflection becomes a hundred… Emery has a lot of work to do, this match emphasized that Valencia still has serious leadership and self belief issues, the team still seems very divided and there is a lack of communication between players. Emery is supposed to be a big believer in sports psychology, hopefully he can use some of that to create the social unity and self belief Valencia is lacking.

Ah nice try. way to sound optimistic but this was utter embarrassing we played exactly how we played under Koeman that second half, lack of intensity was clearly evident we did’nt want it and madrid fought like lions and they spanked are sorry asses all the way home like little pussies that we are. Fukn embarrassing two men up and we got handed like that WOW!!!

Very poor performance at second half… I mean, where was Albelda? Our midfield was very bad, slow. We constantly played long balls at Villa…bur what he should do with that ball if he is all alone?? And Morreti, he is not at needed level for Valencia. I always had poor opinion of him. Alexis…no comment. The whole team was bad at second half, and that is why we lost. We beat ourselves.

Haha, just joking, we’ll I hope they’ll get better and forget about this. We won’t, but they realy should for the sake of Valencia.
    P.S.
Koeman should be Rick Rolled 56 times a-day…

it looks like Albelda may be going to Portsmouth… that would explain his disappearing act yesterday, (why fight for a club your leaving?)at lest this could mean a place in the team for a more committed younger player like Banega or Maduro.

The second half was an outright funeral procession, only candles were missing. If I was Emery I’d put the entire first squad on the bench and played the first match against Mallorca with Valencia’s teen squad. Maybe they could show them what fighting means. And will someone already KICK THE FUCK Albelda out of the squad?!? (excuse my French) Just give him away to the first one who passes Mestalla by chance…

Yes, I would definitely put Albelda to bench, and give Fernandes a chance. I believe he would be much better because he need to show his potential, which he surely has. I mean, anybody would play better than Albelda yesterday. And, if it’s true that his going out, lets give Banega a chance. I don’t know why, but I have some feeling that he’s great young fighter, who only needs to grow further, and became one of the best defensive mids. And where he’ll grow better than here, in Valencia??

I said it before too but we need to kick Baraja and Albelda out. Albelda might have some playing years in him but after all that drama it just doesnt seem right to have him on the pitch. Baraja – I havnt been convinced by him for the past 2 seasons let alone this one. Edu – we need not bother..he will get himself injured.

(I hope) There is a reason why Banega and Maduro loan deals have not been finalized – Emery wants to see them in action and is not entirely convinced by Baraja+Albelda.

I agree Kuku. Baraja should be a substitute only at this stage and i personally feel that banega and maduro can and should be used but i guess Emery is taking the experience route to stabalize stuff in the squad. As you can see in the backline no experience equates to no leader and finally no order.

Don’t give Benaga away to anyone. This boy has potential to be one of the best if he’s given a chance. I’ve seen him with Boca (his developing stage but was able to get first place in front of Battaglia who…is also very good.) And if Banega can play the way he did in Canada when Argentina won the Youth World Cup 2007, our midfield will be solid again.

    Give Banega a chance Unai!

Not convinced on Banega loan him out to Racing or Recre he is kinda careless with the ball, they put him in the final throws in the olympic gold match and he had three turnovers plus some missed passes. looked kinda weak out there. give hima chance sure but he does not hustle and is no way a defensive mid. Gago hustles and banega is no where on that same level.
