Squad Breakdown and Notes
By: Cesar | July 10th, 2008
So the Juan Villalonga era has begun.
Villalonga, an international businessman who was the former president of Spanish telecommunications giant Telefonica, reached an agreement with Our Beloved on Wednesday to take over the running of the club.
Villalonga is hoping to bring success back to the Mestalla.
“I’ve always had Valencia and ultimately Valencia CF in my heart,” said Villalonga, whose parents are from the city.
“My main motivation is to put this club in the world elite, which is the place where the city and the fans deserve to be.” I’d like that. I’d like that a lot …
With that in mind, the new chief reported to work today and met with coach Unai Emery.
The first order of business? To keep stars David Villa and David Silva.
We all want that. Unai has expressed that. But what about the rest of the squad?
Here’s the list of 20 Unai has submitted to the team for physicals and what not in preparation for the pre-season, which begins July 14th (the 4 champions, Marchena, Villa, Silva and Albiol, will report at a later date as will Miguel):
15 sure to stay: Hildebrand, Guaita, Alexis, David Navarro, Moretti, Del Horno, Baraja, Edu, Joaquín, Pablo, Arizmendi, Mata, Vicente, Angulo and Morientes …
4 on the market: Zigic, Fernandes, Butelle and Albelda …
1 in limbo: Ivan Helguera … could leave if he finds a better offer.
Curro Torres? There won’t be a decision about him until December, when he’s recuperated from knee surgery. Until then, he sells replica shirts outside of Manolo’s bar near the Mestalla …
The rest of the guys? Banega, Estoyanoff, Regueiro and Viana were told to stay home, extend their vacations, take jobs as ushers if need be. Just don’t come and try to play football with Valencia CF.
So what do we make of this squad? Here’s a breakdown.
GK – Hildebrand, Guaita.
We all know about Hildebrand. Inconsistent, but still better than the average goalie. Who’s Guaita?
Here’s his bio. He’s Vicente Guaita Panadero, he’s 21 and he comes from the B team, Valencia Mestalla. You know what him being here says to me? We need a backup goalkeeper or a new starter. That’s what this says to me.
D – Alexis, David Navarro, Moretti, Del Horno, Albiol, Marchena, Helguera, Miguel
Alexis could be used as bait for Sevilla keeper and former Valencia stopper Andres Palop. I’d rather he not be moved. I like the youngster who broke his leg early last season.
Navarro is back from Mallorca and is merely a back-up.
Del Horno is back from Bilbao and eager to prove himself.
What do we make of this backline? I think we still need reinforcements, especially in the center.
Caneira is gone and although he was good, he wasn’t the best in the world.
Miguel wants to leave and his expanding waistline isn’t doing him any favors.
I still believe Marchena is better suited in the Albelda holding midfield role. Although he played an EXCELLENT Euro 2008.
And Albiol matured in the games he played in the championships as well.
What do you think? Who can we get to plug these holes? If we stay true to form and play to our capabilities, this COULD be a strength. Then again, we know that won’t happen. What do we do?
MF – Baraja, Edu, Joaquín, Pablo Hernandes
Ya, that’s it people. We’re selling Banega. We’re getting rid of Albelda. Fernandes is basically gone. This is all we have.
So this is obviously a pressing need.
Rafael Van Der Vaart? Now Real Madrid want him. So that’s that.
Reminds me of the Wesley Sneijder fiasco of last season.
Again, we need a creator, someone that can make something of nothing.
None of these guys, sans Pablo, inspires confidence.
Edu is always hurt.
Baraja is 87.
Joaquin may leave. We need someone in the middle and fast …
F – Arizmendi, Mata, Vicente, Angulo, Morientes, Villa, Silva
Having said all that about the midfield, a few of these lads could drop back and help.
Vicente comes to mind. But he’s not a creator. And he’s always hurt.
The forward line looks like a strength to me IF we keep Silva and Villa. If not, we’re left grossly understaffed at an important position.
Arizmendi scored a wonder goal against Madrid last season and is a hard worker, but do you want him starting every game? That’s what I thought …
Angulo? He’s 87, too.
Morientes? 88.
Mata is the shining pearl and a future star of the squad and the national team. He’s got the goods and I hope he matures even further this season.
We need to keep Silva and Villa. They’re our stars. They’re our scorers. They’re the future of this team if Unai and Villalonga are to be believed.
What do you all think of this squad so far?
As far as the pre-season is concerned, Valencia has the Spanish Supercup against Real Madrid, August 17 and 24. First leg in Mestalla, return at the Bernabeu.
Before that, there’s a confirmed friendly against Newcastle United in Saint James Park on August 9th. We’ll be training in Holland the two weeks prior to that, so I’m sure there will be friendlies against Dutch sides. That’s all that’s confirmed.
The season’s shaping up. The pre-season begins this Monday. Times flies, doesn’t it??
**One quick side not for anyone living in Valencia:
As many know, I was in Valencia last month and had a wonderful time.
One of the places I frequented was the Portland Ale House, a new American pub in the heart of the city. This place is FABULOUS! I can’t begin to tell you how much fun I had in this place.
These guys aren’t paying me to say this. I just really like this place and hope it’s there the next time I go (which I hope is soon …).
The owner’s an American guy from Oregon trying to start a brewpub in Valencia.
I love his passion and desire and really think you guys would like the place. He’s there with his sister and another friend and the place has a polished, comfortable feel. The TV’s are always set to sports, they have a variety of beers and also have food!
So please go down there, support these guys and tell them Cesar from New York sent you.
They’re great people and you won’t be disappointed.
They’re the Portland Ale House, c/ Salamanca 10 in the heart of Valencia.
If I was still in the city, I’d watch my matches there!! Good place, good people …

good post about valencia dude, after Roma, Valencia is my favorite team and i want to see them do good next season.
I think you are right abou your post, the defence is going to be shaky net season and Valencia needs one tough son of a bitch CB to get back their defensive strenght, the rest of the team is great as long as we keep silva and villa…
why is Banega beeing sold? he is very young and could be an exelent player for the CM position in a couple of years, kinda like Gago…
well lets see what the formation would look like.
HIldelbrand
miguel, X, Albiol, Del Horno
Joaquin, Marchena, Baraja, Silva
Villa, Matathat would be a good formation, I love hw most of the players are spanish…
the team needs two players, a CB and a CM that is all. a defender like Cherno Samba, Lugano or someone like that might be enough… I don’t see a top team selling any of their CB’s…
if Miguel is sold alexis could step up, he is very good but someone lese shoudl come, what about Iraola?? he would be cool…
there some work to be done but the team does not need a complete overhaul…

Hey Cesar. Not a squad related comment here, but I live in Portland, Oregon, and I’ve heard the story of the brewer packing up, traveling, liking Valencia, settling, and deciding to start a Portland brewery/pub there. If I’m ever in Valencia, I’ll definitely check it out.
As for the squad, there doesn’t seem to be much balance throughout the squad right now. Above average forwards, average defense, and thin/below average midfield. It’s great that Liverpool has finally given up the ghost on trying to get Villa, but the midfield needs serious work. You mention Marchena as a possible defensive holding midfielder… just sucks that Banega hasn’t worked out at all because that was specifically the role he’s supposed to fill.
Anyway, great blog post.

Seems like the Juan guy will do Valencia a lot of good.
Okay, we’re in a BIG mess now. I have a really bad feeling that if the players don’t perform well this season, we’re doomed.
I have no doubt that Villa, Silva, Marchena and Albiol will play excellent. I think our midfield is more in danger than our defense. Except Joaquin. And he might leave, so it’s practically no one who can, well, promise much.
I hope Emery can shape up the team and bring out the winners in them. I know, I just know that all the players have so much potential in them (except a few
) and if they are just coached right, they will blossom!!!Posted from

Hi everybody!
First of all I think Del Horno must work hard as Moretti needs to be replaced! If we also buy a high class phisically strong CB together with tall Albiol we will have cool defence_Miguel-***-Albiol-Moretti.
I also do think Marchena-Silva-Banega-*** must be our MF, as i think Joaquin doesn’t feel OK in Valencian Right Wing. He Can be a good replacement for a more successive RM. Maybe Angulo may play only in matches, where Emery will play with the second squard. Also Villa needs a high class partner in starting 11 as Mata is too young and Morientes is too old and maybe they can be good replacement if a forward is injured or tired.
That’s all’ bye!Posted from

I guess given the fact that we all thought Villa, Silva, Joaquin and Miguel would be wearing shirts for other clubs right now, the fact that we still have them might be our “coup” for the transfer window season. But that miracle aside, its a bit ridiculous that we haven’t at least had a long drawn out saga linking us with a capable CB and MF by now. Are Pablo, Guita, Del Horno and David Navarro goin to be our “new” faces at the Mestalla this year? Villalonga better start walking the walk pretty soon if he hope to legitimately challenge for honours next year (which I think we could with our current squad if Albiol, Alexis and Marchena were consistently solid at the back or if Helguera morphs into Chiellini or something)

IF Marchena and to a lesser extend Abiol play like the did at the EC CB doesnt have to be a weak spot. So i’d keep Marchena at CB (with the advantage we dont get helquera in the field i hope….). As DM you can play Maduro if needed (i know hes crap, but hes young he might learn). Anyways i am convinced Emery can brew something out of it, imo hes a good coach.
What Valencia should not do is go crazy on the transfer market, we already got a huge debt and there is no interest in enlarging it.

And i pray Vicante will have a normal, injury free season, him playing makes a huge differrence as well (its not likely that it will happen, but still i can dream right?).

I just noticed Maduro is not on that list.
Is he staying?Posted from

Sisi isn’t there either, what happened to him? At the start of last season I remember people were talking about how well he was doing at Valladolid..

I believe that if Miguel leaves, then it wouldn’t be to bad to go to David Lomban from the reserves. He played a game in the emirates cup as well as the last game of the season against atletico de madrid. He is very composed and he also assisted David Villa for a counter attacking goal. So as far as right back, I tink we ave a decent solution.
Now with the VDV talks, I say we have a shot. According to goal.com, he is making a push for Spain. First thing that comes to mind is obviously Madrid and Barca, but i dont think he has room in either team. Madrid has sneijder, guti, drenthe as playmakers. While Barca has Xavi and Iniesta, not to mention Barca doesn’t really use a CAM due to the 4-3-3’s limitations. So yeah, basically we do have shot! And oh, does anybody remember this picture from last year? http://bundesliga.theoffside.com/files/2007/08/vandervaart.jpg.
I spilled coffee all over myself when I saw it. Seems like Valencia has sedimental meaning to VDV, parents are from there or something. Anyways, let’s just hope for the best in our transfers in this pre-season.Posted from

Cesar I just want to say again if I haven’t said it before hoe IN LOVE I am with your blog. And that’s not some sexual euphemism – I mean this actual blog
About the prices listed for Villa and Silva – are those actual quotes of Villalonga!? Cause those were the exact same figures I came up with!
I like Ali’s ideas as they are similar to what I’ve been thinking from the ones I read thus far!
And btw guys, if yu haven;t joined already, be sure to join the Valencia Cf group on facebook with over 1600 members and growing, there’s news posts and wall topics up everyday

What’s the deal with Ever Banega thought ?
Valencia buy him in the winter , didn’t play him much for whatever reasons and then are tryin to sell him off in the summer ? :SPosted from

Oh yeah, an obvious question about our club is who’s gonna be our new captain? I say the management should definitely give it to David Villa and make Silva co- captain; after their presentation of commitment to their beloved club. They’re both should be on the way out by now if they were both Ronaldoheaded but there not; in which we should pay respect to as the team’s leaders.

Timothy i couldnt get over it too! absolutly 100% stupidity!! to sell banega! we need striker! becayse villa and mata are short to be able to head in goals so our offence can forget 90% bout heading in a goal! if we dnt sell zigic and play him we know that Zigic can be the missing link with short defence against him and a slow defence, but playing against milan, tottenham, everton, or even ajax… he wont be able to show us his magic. as for morientes as cesae said the guy is 88 years old! we cant count on him! so we really need a tall but not a skyscraper, and strong!! i want to seee martins of newcastle i swear i cnt get the idea of him wearing our shirt out of my head! we need VDV and we need Drenthe in morretti’s place.
martins, VDV, Drenthe ad keep banega! now thats a frightining team i could see causing some real trouble for Ac milan and maybe spanking thier asses!
cant a fan of a club with a stupid administration dream?Posted from

Hi guys, as you know Juan Villalonga (Hercules) has cleaned the Agean stables, and not before time. The Directors had it in their hands to get rid of Koeman when every fan was crying out for this, but they didn’t have the guts to go against Soler as it was his BIG mistake.’Hearsay’ is inadmissable evidence so I will coin another word ‘readsay’ so here it is from the daily pepers (not the football ones !) Not one of the Directors so far has been offered to carry on except Wolfstein during the transitional period. The Presidency has been offered to Enrique Romani. The Sports Director may go to Algorta who in the past has trained Espanol,Tenerife and Valladolid and has been the Selector for Chile and Boliva. It is not intended that he will have the sayso like Carboni and Ruiz but will work elbow to elbow (translation) with Sanchez. The Levante says that Villalong has signed an option to buy Soler’s 71000 shares but first he will investigate the economic figures as he does not trust the ones he has been quoted,(Las Provincias says this has not been confirmed), all his plans will be finalised at the
special General Meeting on 25th July. At least we have a new Trainer, a new President and a new Owner whose ideal is to make Valencia a major world force. So if there is not enough to do this during this season, then maybe next.
Caesar, Maduro is down for the Olympics, missing all the pre season games in Holland and England and the Supercopa
and the Olympics and ends 1 week before the Liga starts. The dream of Banega to go to the Olympics may be put off as he has laryngitis, but it is early days so he may make it. Van der Vaart has been mentioned a lot here. He is with Hamburg till 2010 (they are hoping for 20million)He wants Madrid and he has a private contract to go to them at that date anyway.
However Madrid have offered 4 million (maybe more if they dont buy Ronaldo) and he wants Madrid which may twist the arm of Hamburg for him to go now
On the Barca front, LaPorte is still hanging on though 7 directors have resigned and Etoo says he is not going back even if they go on their knees.
Thats all the readsay for today……Adios, AlmendrasPosted from

Almendras – fantastic news on the Presidency, board and backroom. We need a house cleaning there even more than on the pitch. I just hope that Villalonga doesn’t find out that we need to file for bankruptcy with all our debt and salaries. Have they sold the old Mestalla yet? Any news on the nou Mestalla? All in all, things are looking brighter =)
