Shenanigans

Great win against Getafe this Sunday for our Beloved.
I thought the contest was a hard-fought affair. The match had nine yellow cards and one red to Roberto Soldado for a headbutt on Carlos Marchena (more on that later). This speaks volumes about how hard-core this game turned out.
Getafe had no answers for our fiery defense and quick counter-attacks.
Joaquin was a beast with the ball. Why are we thinking of moving this lad? He laid some passes for Villa that were simply breathtaking. And he maneuvered fluidly with the ball time and time again. He played a great match.
Manuel Fernandes had the game of his life as well. He was efficient, with pace and quickness. Very good game by the Portuguese international, who is settling in after a frustrating few seasons with us.
Miguel was the man of the match for me. He was everywhere. Is it me or is he the fulcrum of the team, meaning he’s where all the action begins for Valencia? He’s quick, he passes the ball deftly, he’s up and he’s down. I’m thoroughly impressed with the big-boned defender’s play of late.
Overall, a decent game. We had our problems. Sometimes it took a bit of time to create. But overall, I’d be nitpicking if I found fault with the game.
The goals were magnificent. Manuel’s goal was brilliant, Joaquin’s was sublime and Vicente’s was magical. Can you ask for anything more?
So now back to the Marchena-Soldado incident … for those that didn’t see, Soldado was red-carded right before the end of the first period for “allegedly” head-butting defender Carlos Marchena.
Afterwards, Soldado and Getafe coach Victor Muñoz were not happy about our captain’s theatrics.
“I think we all saw what really happened. I stood face to face with him (Marchena), I never made any contact and he threw himself to the ground,” explained Soldado during the press conference.
“He was the one who came over to provoke me. I just lowered my head so as to avoid knocking his forehead and I didn’t touch him at all. He went to the ground on his own… nothing more.
“Everyone knows that about him, not just me. If there’s anyone out there who’s looking for an actor, we have one here.
“I know the referees are only human and they make mistakes but they must come prepared.”
Coach Víctor Muñoz echoed his player’s assessment: “On the field, Marchena often has this attitude for theatrics. I dare say that we all know he went down on his own. And it’s important that the referees know it too.”
The veteran 51-year-old trainer then went on to analyze the game.
“To play with 10 after going down 1-0 is hard. When it was eleven against eleven, we were playing well and I was satisfied with how things were going. I don’t believe Valencia deserved the (first) goal. But once they scored, they controlled the game and had much more ball possession,” he concluded.
I thought we deserved the first goal … but what do I know, right?
Getafe’s Romanian defender Cosmin Contra had some choice words about Marchena as well …
“Marchena doesn’t play a game without doing these things. He is a player who causes incidents, provokes and acts on the pitch. Soldado knew about his way and he has fallen a little into the trap of provocation,” he declared.
“The referee has to know that if it comes from Marchena it is a lot of theatre. It is a shame that a player in Spain does these things when he is barely touched and throws himself to the floor like he has been shot.
“After the incident he went off the pitch to put something in his nose when nothing was there, that is a spectacle we do not want to see on the football pitch. Although you have deceived the referee and Soldado has moved his head a little if you do not have blood then do not put something up your nose…He is Marchena and all of Spain knows about him.”
So what does Marchena think of all of this?
“The (television) images are there for all to see. Anyone who wants to judge for themselves, just go and look at the replays,” he said during a presentation ceremony at the Valencian Community Football Federation for Valencia and Villarreal’s Euro 2008 heroes.
“At this point in my career, the criticism does not faze me. If I were 20 years old, then perhaps it would, but I have experienced too many of these already in my career,” the 29-year-old added.
Meanwhile, striker David Villa also echoed his team-mate: “The images say it all. A lot of things can be said, but the best thing to do for those who want to make up their mind is to watch the video.”
Another of Marchena’s club-mates in Spain’s triumphant Eurocopa-winning squad, Raúl Albiol, said: “I believe that Soldado was annoyed. The intention (to hurt Marchena) was certainly there. And I don’t think that there was any play-acting involved.”
Ok, so I tried to find a video of the incident to no avail … but for anyone that saw the match, can you blame Soldado?
I love Marchena. I really do. I think he’s one of these prickly bastards that gets under your skin and causes you to lash out much like Soldado did.
Knowing that, why did Soldado put himself in that position? Why even intimate you’re going to headbutt someone who is known as an ‘actor’ throughout Spain?
This is no way means I’m defending Marchena. Valencia player or not, I find the WWE-style pro wrestling theatrics of football reprehensible.
They’re better left where they belong – Italy.
But Soldado, what were you thinking? Why try to fight against the dirtiest player in the game?
Marchena dove, Soldado got a red and we took advantage of the fact and scored two goals.
Could the game have been different had Soldado stayed in the game? Absolutely …
But Marchena took the player out with his acting and the game was essentially ours after that.
I love Carlos. But he annoys me with his pettiness at times. I’m just not one to admire the diving skills of our players. Villa’s been guilty of it in the past and now Marchena’s coming back to his old ways …
Anyways, good win for our lads and after a midweek Copa del Rey game, it’s Sporting Gijon at the Mestalla … after that? The fun begins as the schedule gets tougher … we’re in for some fireworks, lads.
Things should get interesting after this next weekend … as if they haven’t been already!!

We had the scariest guy in football (Koeman) as a coach last season and look what that did to us

Ya there certainly was contact.. Soldado is pure out full of it.. he put his head in and headbutted him.. lightly but obviously. Marchena made it clear and obvious but the contact and intent was there. Sorry Soldado.. you wont be sainted this time. And frankly Marchena’s job on the team is to bring the worst out of his opposition.. and he did it. Did he exagerate.. certainly and i wish they wouldn’t.. but if you wanna eliminate that behavior put more refs on the field to keep and Eye open. right now there is so much diving that if you don’t make your hit obvious the refs don’t call the penalties.

Soldado is an absolute ass for two reasons: 1) If you headbutt someone in a game you’re gonna get red carded, don’t do it. 2) If you’re dead set on headbutting someone, follow the Maestro’s example. Zidane was a true master indeed, even in his red card collecting antics
I think the whole headbutting incident is a bit overblown anyway… why so little discussion about the three goals? Oh right, I forgot, they were all excellent, so shut up you Getafe players and bring on Gijon

you know Ali, youre right; almost every great team has at least one african player;
Chelsea: Essien, Drogba, blah, blha
Madrid: Diarra’
Barca: Keita, Eto’o, Toure
Arsenal: ToureThose are a few players of the many great african players that i remember.
Im not saying we should try to imitate the other teams but if it works, lets do it.Posted from

I saw it live it was hit and miss, i don’t agree with play acting but if it was a Valencia player i would be more annoyed that he reacted in that manner. Aside from that we played very well i agree Fernandes is finding form and Albelda is enjoying his football again. Finally we must pick up 3 points againest Sporting because we have some difficult fixtures coming up.

I agree about bringing an African player, they bring this whole new dimension to the team that’s rarely found in other players, plus they have excellent stamina.
As for the lineups for todays match here they are :
Goalkeepers: Renan and Guaita (no Timo!).Defenders: Ximo Navarro, Helguera, Arturo and Del Horno.
Midfielders: Maduro, Edu, Baraja, Pablo, Hugo Viana and Vicente.
Forwards: Michel, Zigic, Angulo and Morientes.
I really hope Baraja and Vicente don’t play, I doubt we would need them in this match. Hopefully Michel would get some minutes too. http://www.rojadirecta.org might air the match (just scroll down and look for Valencia).

Nilton, if you think that Sagna os Arsenal is not african, then we got a problem! haha..
what’s with Villareal wanting one of our players?

7amanito: I don’t know bro, ive read about it on the online version of superdeporte.es but they say its stated on who it is in the printed version, anyone got that one?
I hope its Baraja, Angulo or Helguera.

I agree with Javier de Roque.
I just think this way_ if valencia player plays an unfair match but wins it, lat’s not put ablame on him. Others will do it in any case. Let’s just enjoy the win!!!Posted from

Since my mate 7amanito hasnt given it yet, i will put it here. Check out this video, it is truly a work about football:

Hehe seems like Vinnie aint that tough after all
About the Valencia player to Villarreal, tried finding it on the web but havent found it yet, next to SD. Lets hope its mister Madrid Helguera, or Angulo. Angulo has played there before, so why not!!

It’s Machena.
Valencia hasn’t agreed on a raise. Seems they wanted to wait until the end of the season. This would a real shame if it happened. Theatrics or not, Machena could cover 2 positions (DC and CM) and do both jobs excellently, and more importantly, he is our captain.
This will be far beyond Ayala incident. He is one of the few that has stayed here for a long time and has always been an important player, under Rafa, Quique and Unai. I’d be devastated if we let him go to Villareal for free.
But deep down I think he will stay in Valencia for the rest of his career.

@ Cherry: You’re right about how devastating it would be right now (especially with us having so few CB at the moment). If its Marchena I doubt he would get to play much in Villarreal (as they have very good CBs and DMFs)so it would be a bad career choice for him.
Anyway congratulations on the big win today! It was great to see Michel and Pablo scoring their first goals! To be honest I think Zigic was very lively and I think Emery should give him more chances (maybe let him start in the next UEFA cup game?). Angulo (who scored the 1st goal) got hurt towards the end and I really hope it isnt serious.

Im just a bit concerned about Morientes, he isnt scoring many goals anymore. I know he is getting older but he’s 32 (he’s almost the same age as Ruud, Raul, Del Piero and Inzaghi – yet they all seem to be in good form). If im not mistaken I think its been almost a year since he last scored in la liga.

Morientes barely is allowed to play.. He scored in his last game and the game before that. But if you dont play more than 20 minutues its not easy to score goals.

@7amanito:
If am not mistaken; Sagna is from France, I think he has some african descendence thou…. Point is, we need someone like him.Posted from

Do u guys think we will be able to sign X. Alonzo from Liverpool? Valencia’s relationship with the reds has always been good, a lot of transfers has taken place between the clubs; Fabio Aurelio, Sissoko, Morientes, even Rafa Benitez(haha just kidding…. Also, I read that Valencia is after Napoli striker Marcelo Zalayeta; anybody heard anything about him? Im not a big fan of el calcio so ive never seen him play
Posted from

Zalayeta is a strong Uruguayan, used to play for Juventus.. good striker, but I think at 29 he’s a bit too old for us to be chasing after. Better than Zigic though.

Zalayeta is too old for us he is 29 and doesnt score many goals (dont expect more than 12 per season from him), he definitely isnt what we need is past his prime. I agree with Daniel he is better than Zigic but only very slightly. I dont think he is better than Morientes even at his current form. Even though Olic is the same age, he is better than Zalayeta IMO. Id prefer we stick with younger strikers as we might pay a bit more but they would give us more yield on the long run.

Why looking far for something that’s not far fetched? Sunny ‘oryan’ stephen obayan is an african ( nigerian to be precise ) whom with time and regular play will deliver that top quality play we expect from an african. That lad surely has talent in abundance but ronald ‘tintin’ koeman froze him. What do you guys say? I hope villa doesn’t get homesick so he can score goals( hattrick i predict) against his childhood club to boost his pichichi pursuit. Lastly congratulations to valencia b for the 3 nil win over portugualete. Anyone seen EMERY? help me tell him to continue using valencia b( b here means bench) In the copa even if we get ousted we’ll still like it, won’t we?
@ cesar; we need streak please. We tired of this twice a week article. FROM NIGERIA keep the blog rolling AMUNT!Posted from

My God…Your ip said you’re from Germany @_@.
BTW, I used to have high expectations for Sunny. Dunno how he’s doing at Osasuna. Villa’s going through a drought, but he’s working harder than ever so I’m not too worried about him. The great thing about him is he is so versatile he can assist, dribble, pass, score and defend! If he is on the pitch, he’ll contribute, be it goal or not.
@Fayez, I’d like someone new as well. Or else we would have another Moro/Baraja to deal with. Don’t get me wrong, I have enormous respect for both of them, but as they get older, the situation gets difficult.
Alonso I’m not too keen on. For DM we have Albelda and Machena, more than adequate, CM we have Fernandez and Edu. The Brazilian did a very good job vs Getafe. I really wish he could go back to his old self. The passing and vision, a pure attack-starter. So I’d like a sub for Villa and Miguel and Renan since Timo is set to leave. And a DC.

@ cherry: Dunno about this ip address which states posted from germany cause really i’m from nigeria. Valencia are not well respected in this part of the world. Out of about 60 million football fans, valencia can’t account for 50 club supporters( bad eh!) it’s a fact. My friends calls us racists.
BTW, a croatian friend of mine, told me that kalinic at #7.5 million would be a waste of our limited cash. He went on to assure me that one manzudkic would be okay for a little sum above that. In other words kalinic is not that prolific.Posted from

@ cherry :Told you i know nothing about this ip whatever. The last one states posted from united states. Believe me or not, i’m from nigeria. I learnt sunny stephen made just one 89th minute substitute appearance for osasuna and was yellow carded 2 minutes later against racing on the fifth of october and that was his first and last liga appearance for osasuna till date.

sunny is not particularly talented hes too soft to play as a central and too inaccurate to play as a forward and if he cant start at osasuna hes not not good enough to bench warm at Valencia.
as for Valencia getting an African player, i was watching Marseille play the other day and i thought Mamadou Niang would fit Emery’s system well but Marseille never sell players cheap so he would probably never come to Valencia. Fernandes fills that stereotypical African player role for Valencia he’s strong, he’s quick, athletic and enthusiastic.
Marchena is not interested in leaving Valencia he just wants more money and is willing to wait till the financial situation at Valencia calms down to get it.Posted from
