Season’s Greetings, Favorite Kit and El Gordo

By: Cesar | December 24th, 2008

I wanted to take this opportunity to wish all the readers of the Valencia Offside the happiest and healthiest of holiday seasons. BON NADAL to you all!

It is all of you that have made the Valencia Offside blog the success it has become this year … it’s great fun to write the blog and even more fun to read the feedback and debate Our Beloved.

Whether you are one of the many commentators or one of the many stopping by the site several times daily, thank you, thank you, thank you.

Who knows what the second half will bring for Valencia CF, but no matter what it’s on me to keep you engaged in the blog. Here’s an idea – I’ll make up some transfer rumors! Just kidding.

My hunch is that we’ll do better than we think. No matter what, there’ll be plenty to write about. Stick with the blog and we’ll do our best to earn your clicks.

The quantity and quality of comments, the emails, the links from fellow bloggers, the sheer volume of numbers of visits, the great people I’ve met because of the blog … my gratitude to all of you is endless.

From my family to yours, Happy Holidays!

Ok, so what’s your favorite all-time Valencia CF kit? My links yesterday sparked some debate …

For my money, the old Senyera is simply to die for … I adore it.
I own the 2005 version, but it’s a bit clunky, the ‘Toyota’ stamp on the front a bit too rigid for my tastes.

Right behind those is the 2000-2001 home kit, the one we wore in that year’s Champions League final, elegantly sported by Juan Sanchez in the accompanying picture to the left …

After that come two shirts from the same campaign.

First, the blue away kit … I love the black lines on the dark navy background. I own one, but I bought it outside the Mestalla one drunken evening for approximately $2. Not a great fit, but I sport it every now and again.

The next one is also from that year, the kit we wore when Rivaldo and FC Barcelona knocked us out of the 2001/02 Champions League with a hat trick in the last game of the Spanish season at the Nou Camp, a mere 4 days after our loss to Bayern Munich.

Want to cry? Watch it here …

Ruben Baraja, 85, scored two in that game. He also looked much better than Rivaldo in the light blue kit. I’d love to see us wearing that one again …

Anyways, last story of the day …

Take a look at this!!

Numancia midfielder Mario Martinez won 150,000 euros ($210,000) in Spain’s Christmas lottery, Spanish media reported on Tuesday.
The player, who Marca newspaper said earned around 200,000 euros a year, said he could not believe his luck.
“I never play the lottery except the Christmas one because it’s especially exciting,” he told the paper, adding that he did not have any special plans on how to spend the cash.
The lottery success caps a fine year for the 23-year-old. He scored the winning goal in Numancia’s 1-0 victory over Barcelona on the opening day of the season, the only defeat the Catalans have suffered this term.

150,000 euros is about what Thierry Henry makes in a WEEK!!

Martinez also happens to be the poorest player in La Liga … Good for Mr. Martinez. Spend the money wisely …

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all!! AMUNT!!

@ Javier : Youre right about that man..but Angulo was wanted by some clubs in the summer and they should have let him go during that time. Loaning Zigic if no replacement comes (at least the management says no one is coming) is a very wrong move. If we didnt have the cup or UEFA then id agree with this move, however we cant compete on 3 fronts with 2 strikers.

http://www.levante-emv.com/secciones/noticia.jsp?pRef=2008122100_11_534314__Valencia-camino-solo Spanish version, just some short info. 19 years, for free, signs until 2013… Is he any good??

    @ fayez
I agree mate, and the worst thing is, they made a lowsy loan-deal as well!!! I mean we bought him for 15 million, now Santander has the money, but we loan him out again and still pay 30% of his wages. For a player who WANTS to play, is ok with his bench-situation but just wants a fair shot, which imo is nothing asked too much right!?!? Some weird things going on at our club…

    wow, from 2006:

Dag Alexander Olsen Signs For Tottenham Hotspur From Norway’s Gjovik Lyn Beating Barcelona, Chelsea, and Bayern Munich To Deal
Submitted by Scott Harkness on Wed, 2006-11-01 21:43. Tottenham Hotspur 2006-2007 Team News Archive Premiership Transfer News
Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed that, subject to a medical, they have completed the signing of 17-year-old striker Dag Alexander Olsen from second division Norwegian side Gjovik Lyn.

The news that Spurs have signed the highly rated forward ahead of Chelsea, Barcelona and Bayern Munich for a reported fee of £80,000.

Tottenham’s sporting Director Damien Comolli told the official Spurs site: “Alex is a talented player, very, very quick and has an impressive goalscoring record in what is his first season in the first team at Gjovik Lyn.

“He came here for a week’s trial and impressed both our Academy and senior staff and we are delighted to sign him for our Academy and development squads.

“Alex had offers from many top clubs both in England and across Europe but he showed a real desire to play for Spurs.”

And one other thing, about a 13 year old talent:

    Thats a good thing!

I dont understand how can we get this 19 year old Norwegian guy for free when he was supposed to be so impressive? Why are Spurs getting rid of him so easily?

Fayez that is a good question but since no one is coming are they going to give him any chance?Personally I’m not sure and I think we should really get another striker.I think we can get someone not so expensive but in the same time decent enough to play for us.

@ Kooshin: Im definitely with giving promising youngsters a chance (especially if they’re coming for free!), but its puzzling why a promising 19 year old would be released like this from Spurs when many other European clubs were chasing him. Maybe he didnt sign a professional contract?

    @ Fayez,
thats really bad news mate, really bad!! Havent read anything about it in the media i check, but foroche is well informed so this really sucks. Btw check this LP article, since 2004 we spend 185 million euros on transfers, they gave an exact picture of every single signing:
    http://valenciacf.lasprovincias.es/noticias/2008-12-28/millones-fichajes-desde-2004-20081228.html

And another thing, some 3rd rang trainer called Claudio Ranieri claims that Valencia wasnt a topclub when he got there, and he MADE Valencia a topclub. Who the **** does he think he is??? Cuper and Benitez made us big, not this useless arrogant cry-baby Italian. Now i hate that dude even more!!!

i with all of you…as long as the kid is free i say we give him a chance…free is practically the only thing we can afford right now…but we should keep looking for more seasoned talent in the meanwhile…hope this financial sitch gets cleared up soon…it’s depressing

@Johnnie: You wanna know what’s really really bad…one of the liquor stockers dropped a bottle of Blue Label at work today!!! I thought of my Valencianista buddy immediately…and then laughed as the manager told him about the $220 he owes the store.

Signing a 19 yr old Olsen for free is not a bad thing … as long as we don’t loan him to someone immediately.
    That’s our speciality lately.

Hi Ali, you are right but then those who are realists knew all along that this would be the case. We have had years of Big Names dangled in the Superdeporte all season but nothing happens.
Calderon is a buddy of Platini and he is going to have a meeting with him to ask that his 2 recent signings that have played in the EUFA be now allowed to play in the Champions. Calderon says changing this would benefit all teams (teams with plenty of money maybe).
Whether the rules are right or wrong I cannot see that changes can be made mid-season even if it is Madrid asking…Almendras

Does Soriano still have to come up with 60ME before the end of the year?

@Almendras… u say realists knew this was coming, and that would make them even stupider, cuz they knew it was coming, they had a “heads up!!!” call, so i dnt see how they didnt prevent it or at least try to get out of this situation with the least loss! and what i mean, if they (realists) knew we r heading to tht direction (money shortage) from the end of QQ era, why did they splash the cash? and if the realists realised that we are heading to this direction in Emery’s era, which is now, why did they loan Zigic… What im saying, if we r in trouble ( lack of money ) why loan a player so our troubles wouldnt only be the lack of money but also the lack of players!
what is making me boil form the inside is that the administration is getting ITSELF get cornered by trouble!
    i just dont understand…

Im not quite sure how much Zigic makes per year, but my guess is around 1.5ME. So in 6 months and if we pay 30% of his salary then we are only saving approximately 500,000 Euros. Im not quite sure if that is worth loaning Zigic since a win in any UEFA cup game will give us almost half that.
