Season Preview
By: Cesar | August 26th, 2008
I’m not going to dwell too long on the events of Sunday’s crushing defeat to Real Madrid in the 2nd leg of the Spanish Supercopa.
It would have been nice to win the trophy, but let’s be honest with ourselves: It’s a glorified friendly.
I know, I know. A lot of you out there will disagree with me. It’s a trophy that was in our grasps. We lost our way in the 2nd half, ceding the midfield to Madrid, letting them whack us around the pitch.
But still, what does the game mean? Sure, we have some egg on our faces, but the season starts this coming Sunday, not last Sunday.
Watching Madrid celebrate like they’d just won the Champions League made me realize the idiocy of the game. If we let this match define our season, we’re in trouble.
We made mistakes. We looked awful in defense, couldn’t keep possession, were outmatched in midfield all while fielding two more men than Madrid, who were down to nine (Albelda and Baraja looked very old in the second half). Timo Hildebrand can’t hold onto the ball and Alexis made an awful pass to seal the victory for Los Merengues.
It’s over. Unai Emery’s men need to forget this match and look forward with optimism to the new season. If we’re to believe all the words the players have been uttering about this season being different and the attitude of the team being different, now’s the time to show it.
With that in mind and with our first game of the season against Real Mallorca ready to kick off, here’s my super-abbreviated, super short 2008-09 Valencia CF preview edition. Enjoy.
Let’s break the squad down first. I did this a few weeks ago, but let’s do it again with a month of pre-season under our belt.
GK – Timo Hildebrand, Renan
I don’t know much about Renan, but he has to be better than Timo. I’ve been high on the German international for a long time, but I think he needs some competition to make him a better ‘keeper. He looked overmatched in Sunday’s game. He couldn’t hold onto the ball and let in some soft goals.
Much of that can be attributed to our putrid defense. But still, can Timo please learn to catch the ball??
Renan was with the Brazilian national team at the 2008 Olympics. Anyone see him play?
DF – Albiol, Marchena, Helguera, Alexis, Miguel, Moretti, Curro Torres, Del Horno
This is our club’s greatest weakness. How times change. A few seasons ago, we had arguably the best defense in Europe. Now, we’re Levante.
The central defense HAS to be fixed. Why haven’t management manned up and bought a new CB?
Albiol needs maturation and Marchena needs to play. He looked wonderful at Euro 2008, but he hasn’t played much in the pre-season.
Helguera is horrible.
Alexis needs more time to develop. His silly backwards pass in Sunday’s game showed that. Isn’t that Football 101? Don’t pass laterally in your own defensive zone? Bad play. He should be benched for this.
Miguel’s been a surprise this pre-season. He looks solid and inspired. He’s still big boned, but quick and agile with the ball.
Moretti is exposed as a defender every week. You’re telling me Del Horno can’t do better than him?
We need better defenders. It’s that simple. For this team to go anywhere, the defense needs to be shored up. As we all could see Sunday, the team’s lacking in that department.
MF – Maduro, Albelda, Baraja, Manuel Fernandes, Pablo, Vicente, Joaquin, Silva, Edu, Viana, Ever Banega
This is one of our strengths. But unfortunately, we’re relying on the wrong people.
Look, I love these guys. I adore Albelda and Baraja. I also love Vicente and Edu. But Albelda and Baraja looked very old this pre-season. Vicente is oft-injured as is Edu. To think we can count on these guys to lead us to glory this season is lunacy.
We need guys like Manuel Fernandes, Maduro and Ever Banega to slowly take over.
Of course, Banega, who just won a gold medal with Argentina in the Olympics, is off on loan.
Maduro, who could learn a lot as Albelda’s understudy, is probably off on loan.
And Maunel looks to get insignificant time on the pitch.
Pablo looks like a great pickup.
Joaquin either needs a new team or needs to be more consistent.
He’s so hot and cold. I still love Pisha, but he’s frustrating.
Silva is Silva. What more do I need to say about this lad? I love him!
Still, as bad as we looked Sunday, the midfield looks slick when it wants to.
Even during Sunday’s game, there were flashes of brilliance.
Great one-touch passing, decent organization and good distribution. Now, we need to keep that up for the entire game, not just one half.
F – Villa, Morientes, Angulo, Mata, Zigic
This is another area of strength. Of course, we need to get the ball to them before they can do anything.
David Villa is the star of the team and one of the most sought after forwards in world football. Real Madrid tabled a 47 million Euro bid for him yesterday which Valencia flat out rejected. That’s how highly he’s thought of.
The press is buzzing with word that Madrid may table a 50 million Euro bid for El Guaje, but I just can’t see him leaving. Let’s hope I’m right and all the naysayers are wrong (read this lovely article for what I mean … how horrible is this article?? Notice my comment on the site … simply rubbish journalism.)
I can see Villa having a breakaway season, provided he stays healthy and gets some time on the ball.
Mata is also looking like he’ll have a break out season. The Madrid youth product looks like a solid all-around scorer.
Morientes may be sold and Zigic should be sold.
So who’s coming in? Zapater? Huntelaar? We’ll see.
What’s obvious from this list is that no matter how much we’ve improved, the team needs reinforcements. We need a CB. We need a creative midfielder. We need more firepower.
But the management team cries poverty and so we wait, debating the ills of the club for ourselves.
The team’s much better than they were last season. But so are Barcelona. So are Atletico Madrid. So are Sevilla. So are Villarreal.
So where will we finish?
If we can shore up the defense before the transfer deadline closes at the end of the month, I think we can challenge for the Top 4. I think we can scare some people with our one-touch passing and our flowing play.
If we don’t, if we focus more on the offense and try to outslug clubs by scoring goals and leaking goals, I think we’ll be in trouble.
So although my heart says we’ll win La Liga, the UEFA Cup and storm into next season’s Champions League, my brain tells me we’ll finish mid-table and be forced to buy what we needed this season next season.
So my guess? 7th … UEFA Cup, here we come.
It pains me to say this, but we’re still not good enough. We’ve still got a lot of work to do. Let’s see what happens before the transfer deadline. Maybe we’ll buy an Ayala replacement after all??
What do you think? Prove me wrong … please … I beg you …

I don’t know what I’m going to do if Valencia sell Villa. I thought he wasn’t going. Wasn’t this all supposed to be over 136 years ago? How come we’re still not sure if Villa’s going to stay? Do we know if anyone’s going to stay?
I’m sick of this doubtful atmosphere always lingering around Valencia fans. The management’s never sure of what to do, it’s just so frustrating.
You’re right. I think we need to be realistic here, and I don’t think it could’ve been put in better words. Our hearts do feel that we can win the trophies, but our minds know we’ve gotta be realistic. Things are getting better, but they just started. This is a new start, and we can’t hope to start winning cups just yet.
We do need a few players badly if we’re to really ‘rock the world’. I hope the management’s thinking of buying players, or else…
Goal.com’s getting on my nerves. Why can’t they give Valencia a break? All they care about is their beloved Madrid. They’re never going to admit that Villa’s doing the right thing by staying. I loved your comment, and I couldn’t agree more. This article was just another example of their undying love to Madrid.
Sorry for the ranting, but things are just getting really annoying.Posted from

Mate, truth is we are not better than last year, we have not in a single way reinforced our team, we just lose players. Keeping our starts is not reinforcing, after the 2006 campaign Silva and Villa were already super important, now they just are European Champions and thats why we suddenly think they are more important, but they already were…
Now, we are about to lose Zigic and Morientes, 2 players who last year were bound to make up our attack. Last year we reinforced our attack, this year we have little time to do anything mate, but we’re losing players and we are not being careful enough to get replacements for them. Players called btw (Zapater is a DMF) for the striker position are Milito, Sergio Garcia and Paluvchenko. Milito i hope it will be, he and Villa will rock together. But hurry up VCF, what the fuck are they waiting for, christmas??
About our midfielders, we got the wrong filosophy man. I mean, Maduro is never all that, i’ve seen him live tens of times at Mestalla, he is not good for our team cause he playes backwards instead of to the front. Not good! Fernandes and Banega on the other hand, class midfielders, give them space and confidence, they’ll rock the shit out of every game and give us some more flair as well! And our filosophy now is, try to brush away last years errors (the (justified, but not well-done) exclusion of players) by giving them playing time they actually dont deserve? They just deserved to be treated better, but that doesnt mean they are capable of leading our team these days.
Cause they are not, Albelda, Edu, Baraja (Baraja still can be master, with a good DMF next to him I believe), they do not posses the key to our teams success. Not anymore. The game has changed, our opponents have gotten midfielders who are more capable, smarter, more technical and above all, over better quality. We need these men as well, and we got them, our coach just thinks it is too soon. But i think, we need to give them time, we should not give our old heroes time cause they were heroes, we have to give time to new young heroes who will make us fight again.
Defensivly, we have been sucking since 2005. Ayala (bastard) left to relegate to la Segunda thankfully and we never got a good replacement. Helguera? MUHAHAH, what a fucking joke. Alexis, great prospect, needs time. Albiol, also great, still needs time. Marchena, can be a bit ruff at times but it good. But, what we need is a killer, we need a bad-ass hitman taking out every single striker on the pitch. No questions asked. We are too soft, we need balls, we need a Jaap Stam, a Pepe, a Ferdinand, and in our case, i would favor a Fernando Meira. Leader for years, and capable of handling any striker, at times brutal, but most of the time discreet, just how they have to be. But we wont buy any, we keep telling ourselves, give us time give us time, while season after season we lose more.
But, above all for me like i stated in the last report, i want to see a spirit of fighters. I honestly wouldnt mind Valencia being the last team in la Liga, as long as they fight every week, every minute, for what they are worth. And if we gain that fighting spirit which Real had last week and they can be fucking proud of it (hopefully it was a one-time moment), if we gain this spirit we can beat everybody with our qualities. But what we need, is balls. Stop bitching, stop being a softy, stop falling after every touch, we are fucking Valencia and we mean business! We will kick, hit, punch, knee, beat the shit out of everybody to get to our victory, cause we dont let others rule us, we rule you! Amunt Valencia!!!

(takes a breath)
and i forgot about Hildebrand haha. I was so happy he came to Valencia, remember him at Stuttgart when he held his goal clean for a few hundred minutes in the Champions League (with Meira as the CB!!!)!?? He was great, but lately he just is not sure of what he is doing. Maybe he should play in a Continental shirt, cause in the commercial he stops everything with one hand
But now I am glad Renan will come, he has been a great prospect and he is doing very well with the national and Internacional de PA’s team. I hope he will take over soon, but i fear than we will have to look for a second keeper cause Hildebrand wont stay than. I just hope their competition will make them both top, and we can be confident at the back. But please Valencia, get rid of Albelda, get Zapater, get rid of Edu, of Madurdo, and get in Fernandes and Banega. Than, get Fernando Meira and leave Helguera at somebody’s doorstep to take care of him, he is such a good boy but such a bad player. And pleeeease, get Milito, he is a young Morientes only with more goals…

That’s a spirit, Johnnie!
As I mentioned a week ago, we need a badaas motherf***er in defense, or – even better – a defensive midfielder like Kily Gonzales used to be for Los Che five years ago. What a decline, the best ofensive team in Europe became a time with worst defending …Okay, this is gonna sound heretic, but just give it a try (and don’t throw stones at me please):
Considering that the management don’t have money for new signings … ehm … I’d sell (okay, I’d think of selling) Villa for 50M€ to improve our last line. Buy 2 badass defenders for that money, maybe Milito as Villa substitute. It would break my heart but this way we’d become a stronger team.
Los Che can score without Villa (we have Mata, Morients, Silva…) but can’t defend properly with these guys, and I trust Emery that he’ll be consolidating the team psychologically – as the first Supercopa game showed.Okay, I’m off now to trenches…

I can only hope that Coach Emery saw on Sunday what we’ve all known for some time. Moretti looked like a complete fool, Hildebrand inspires absolutely no confidence, and the center of the midfield needs help badly. The main positive I see going into the season is that the team has scored goals after losing leads. That didn’t happen last year. I think this team is a CB and some squad changes away from a top 6 finish. I guess we’ll have a better idea next week.

Hildebrand was responsible for none of the goals that score and in fact was best player in Valencia’s unit. even after Sunday’s disaster, Emery said that Hildebrand is a good goalkeeper is part of the team and that they trust him very much. This Hildebrand hatred is getting ridiculous. Two goal happened because of mistakes by Alboil and Alexis another was score through defensive midfielder being out of position and because of a marking mixup during a corner. none of those things had nothing to do with Hildebrand every goal keeper expects to face a minimum amounts of shots, due to the defenders cutting down the number of shots taken on goal on Sunday that was not happening.

how well Valencia do this season will depend on how well they solve their leadership problems. Sunday there was no leader who stood up and told the rest of the players to calm down and remember what Emery told them at half time. Albelda and Baraja were the experienced Veteran players and they made no effort to help organize Valencia as it fell apart. Marchena is supposed to be another senior player who members of the squad look up to, hopefully when he returns from injury he will taken on the mantle of leadership at Valencia. Nerves ands Self doubt caused that terrible defensive performance by Alexis and Alboil, and a lack of motivation and desire to take on responsibility caused Baraja and Albelda’s disappearing act in the second half. if Valencia are to do well Emery will have to figure out a way to solve Valencia’s physiological issues.

I dunno … I had confidence in Canizares. I trust someone like Casillas. I just don’t have it yet for Timo. Maybe in time. I’d like to see him with some competition behind him.

Cesar the most comical thing about this who Renan must be better than Timo debate is Renan parries the ball even more than Timo and is known for quickly parrying the ball with his arms and feet. Renan often reacts quickly to a shot and parries it. consider that for one parry a game Timo is being branded as unreliable, the surely Renan would be crucified. Things like parrying the ball wont be the deciding factor in who is number one but rather if Timo can adjust himself to and communicate with Valencia’s defense. last season Timo had problems communicating with the defenders and was always shouting frantically when the opposition was attacking Valencia’s box. Renan was brought in because they are still doubts as to if Timo communicate asnd by extension work well with Valencia’s defenders.

Anyone else find that they want to slit their wrists as they watch this Valencia defense? The thing about selling Villa… Villa is more important to this club than anyone could imagine. He is the one thing that keeps the fans coming back to this team in spite of our front office acting like it’s staffed by monkeys. Villa is somewhat of a national hero in spain at the moment. Sell him, and watch how mad people get. Just my personal opinion. There are several superfluous players throughout the squad that could be sold, and through them we could make up enough money to buy a single reinforcement for that defense, which is what we need. Keep Villa, but pony up some cash for that defender.
Amunt Valencia
P.S.: I’ll be moving to Spain (Mallorca, actually) for a year at the beginning of September… I will be in Valencia for the Osasuna (i think?) match on the 21 of september, if anyone happens to be there!Posted from

I agree with John; Timo is great but our defense needs a real leader; I would say we need a defender like Coloccini

thanks for the compliment, I’m not From the USA I’m from Barbados… Parrying or not parrying does not make a goalkeeper reliable or unreliable. Marcos Brazil’s goalkeeper from the 2002 word cup parried the ball a lot but still was probably the second best goalkeeper there next to oliver Kahn. Once the ball is recovered by the goalkeeper or the defenders then parrying is acceptable. there is a difference between parrying and having soft hands where the keeper tries to hold the ball and it slips out causing defensive scrambles. Neither Timo or Renan have soft hands.

What to do? What to do? Selling Villa will help the team bring in much needed reinforcements in all areas of the pitch. But his is the shining star of Valencia. The only who can take Los Che to great heights. I’m stumped.

cant believe some of the coments on here,we lose one micky mouse game against gods eleven and its mass suicide. of course we are better than last year.emery will need time.its not going to be brazil overnight..off to the tomatina now.

I think that is the worst game we have had for years!1 nil up and 10 down then a penalty then down to 9 men and the score line is 4-2? What was clear to me was that the players were not taking any advantage of the man who was sent off.If we play any game like that in when the season starts then I guess it is going to be a disastar!
Obviously, the management don’t think or are not thinking about getting any kind of re-enforcements.
