Safety
By: Cesar | May 10th, 2008
I’m keeping this one short as I battle a torrid head cold that just won’t go away … the players better not catch anything either, as evidenced by the picture above which shows Marchena and Villa enjoying the wet conditions at Paterna.
They’re needed. Me? Not so much, as the great comments on the site more than make up for the blog.
Thanks for your wonderful insight and please keep it coming!
So after Wednesday’s tense 1-0 victory over Real Zaragoza, we’re a point from safety, a point from our late-season objective: staying in La Liga.
Should reigning champions Real Madrid defeat Zaragoza at La Romareda, we’re also safe.
So things are finally looking up for us … can you believe this is our objective? Staying in La Liga? Seems so long ago we were dreaming of Moscow nights and a date in the Champions League final. Now we’re clawing for scraps.
Not that I’m complaining, because staying in the league is our main objective these days. And if we succeed, let’s thank our lucky stars.
One point is all it will take. One point against city rivals Levante, who at 26 points sit in 20th and last place in the league. They’re already relegated and playing simply for pride.
We all might think this is a gimme game, but that’s not so. A club playing simply for pride, a club playing the string out, playing in their last local derby for some time, will be playing their hearts out.
And with the form we’ve shown week in and week out, nothing’s taken for granted.
I’ve said before that I have a special place in my heart for Levante.
I lived in the neighborhood and went to many games during my time living in Valencia.
But as much as I feel for Levante, this is a must win. Valencia has to go all-out, hoping to stifle any momentum our city neighbors hope to build.
Should be a good one …
Some tidbits:
- Keep the nominations for the Valencia season awards coming! There’s a whole community of people voting over at the Xtratime forum as well! Make your way over and make friends with Valencia fans from around the world!
- Goal.com thinks we’re going to win 3-1 in their game preview. What do you think?
- Vicente is hurt again. I love the guy. I really do. But he’s softer than a newborn baby’s bottom (weak metaphor, eh? I’m sick. Give me a break …) His time here is up.
- Is Almeria’s Unai Emery our new coach? Spanish media seems to think we’ve signed the hot coaching property to a two-year deal. But Emery said that’s hogwash.
“That I have signed something with Valencia is a lie. It is a lie that Valencia have secured Unai Emery,” Emery said, apparently talking to someone about himself in the third person.
- David Albelda dropped his case against the club. I guess some of the boos he heard on Wednesday upon reappearing caused him to change his mind.
Great man. Great player. You totally didn’t deserve what you got. I will miss you next season.
- Milan’s transfer consultant and super agent, Ernesto Bronzetti, claims that the Rossoneri’s bid for Ronaldinho may be over and they should also look elsewhere for reinforcements … like, Valencia, for example.
“There are many young players in Spain who are potential targets. Look at Valencia for example, they will need to sell following a poor season and they may be forced to get rid of some of their prized assets.”
Hmm, like Silva, Joaquin and David Villa?
So is that the respect we command around Europe? The spectre of a selling club hangs around us?
Pathetic what the people in charge of this club have done this season …
I need to lay down. More later …

Good stuff from Valencia, at least Maduro and Banega are on the bench and Albelda started. Im watching Zaragorza againest Madrid maybe if they go down we could sign Aimar back and take Milito and or Olivera from Milan. He is defintly a striker we could use, now that were assured to stay in La Liga it should be really interesting, the summer clearout and the possible signings, i personally think we only need a striker and centre back depending who gets sold.

Vicente can’t be sold surely? He’s a club legend (my favourite player after Villa), and is one of the best wingers in the world. A concerted effort must be made to get him fit and not rush him back to the team. I doubt he’d want to play for any team but Valencia anyway, and imagine the uproar. Besides, the club needs players who genuinely care about it at the moment.
Btw Cesar, fantastic blog. I’m trying to take some inspiration for the Blackburn Rovers Offside blog which I co-write. KUTGW!

@Original Ali
Giving the fans a say over players we buy is not gonna work in Valencia.
I remember when we the Valencia fans on the Armada started a petition for Valencia CF to sign Sneijder.
Johnnie Walker(Thats his handle) personally took the petition(Signed by over 1000 fans) to the Mestella.
Obviously…Nothing was done.
We’re leading 4-1 right now.I think we shouldnt get rid of all our stars. We just just sell those that want to leave a la Albelda,Villa.
Dispose the Arizmendis and Maduro(I never liked him).
Keep a compact team with depth.
Get a good coach and stay competitive(That brings more fans to the stadium).
Look outside europe and get talents from Africa,Asia(That increases fanbase and sales in Merchandise).
Follw all these steps and Our financial problems will be solvedin the next season.Posted from

Why does everyone hate Maduro trust me if he is given a chance he will prove himself to be a great player for Valencia. Besides we need players like him who want to prove themselves in a Valencia shirt, i do agree the new coach must instill defensive discipline and a much more competitive spirit. Valencia will be back stronger i have no doubts.

Just got back from the game. I have to admit that this humble pie I’m eating at the moment tastes pretty good! Villa had a great game, worked hard, two of the three goals were excellent the other showed a good work rate and he was very unselfish when he squared to Mata for his goal – could’ve easily scored himself. Arizmendi was awful I think tonite and I don’t know why Voro didn’t start with Joaquin but everyone else had a good game. Fair play to Levante too. Despite their situation and getting thoroughly beaten their heads didn’t drop and they tried to make a competition of it for the 90 mins.

Why does this have to happen to Valencia?
There’s only one answer to that: No one in ValenciaCF possesses the thinking skills needed to win games, keep the fans happy and score like crazy. It’s so depressing…
I couldn’t believe the 6-0 defeat….it was horrible! How could this ever have happened? 6 from them, and nil from us!? How bad could Valencia get?
It’s true that Villa doesn’t play like he did before, and I’m pretty sure that’s becuase he doesn’t want to be in Valencia anymore. Who would want to after this season? When you know that your team is losing all these matches, they don’t have money to buy new players, and they’re so desperate for some money that they might even sell you, you can’t put in as much effort as you did. People are probably thinking he’s wasting his talent on a team which…is well, failing miserably, at everything. Albeit these wins, we can say for certain that Valencia needs some SERIOUS improvement, and that means a good coach, a good manager that has enough brains to think, and some sincerity. And then we’ll see Valencia soar in the sky like they once did…
Let’s all hope that Valencia does rise and beat those teams that took away so much from us (I’m not blaming them, mind you).Posted from

we shouldnt focus on blowout loses. 6-0 ok fine but the next week Barcelona lost 5-1. and now we won 5-1.. sometimes goals come easily. In all honesty the Barca match was over after teh third goal. they simply didnt bother after that.
Today it was a goal fiesta. lets focus on defence next season.

Didn’t see the game but i read the reports online as well as the comments of my fine fellow bloggers. You’re right sara, Cesar’s blog is getting a lot of new faces, which brings me to my next point… Any of you lovely Valencia fans live in the NY Metro Area?!?! Cesar and I are usually a two man Che supporters club (plus Timothy when he’s in NYC). Hopefully we can try to build up NY CHE over the summer, as Morera and Co. build up our beloved, and have a legit supporters club for the start of 08-09. At least a flag with a logo on it!

@loco
that’s one of the reason why i’m so fanatic with El Che too. Valencia is the only elite team in Europe that have more local players then the foreign players, 17/18 Spanish player and only 8 from the outside.Posted from

ya offcourse miguel isnt as good as thy are but he was as good last season! but due to lack of good coaching,, lack of middle defence presence,,, he feels lost just like the whole team! but hes got it in him, he needs guidence! thts wt i think .

@ Javi, hell ya it is like 5th place. Look at Bayern, they screwed up last year offloaded some dead weight i.e. Owen Softgreaves and revamped with new talent as they ran away with the Bundesliga thsi year.

Hi, well we can all now breathe a sigh of relief and I think some of that credit must go to Abelda and Angulo giving back a bit of the old spirit and confidence that they were going places. In the past few weeks there have been many names bandied around for us to buy, but lets have some practical ideas because there is little money on the table. It said for instance today that Salom has had an operation and has to rest for a couple of weeks so the signing of a trainer is in the hands of Sanchez it says that he knows he has a battle on his hands to get any money out of Soler. I think if Valencia beat Atletico next week they may stay with Voro which might not be a bad thing, 4 wins out of 5 compared with Ali’s favourite trainer Koeman of 4 wins out of 22.
Soler is not going to pay out, has anyone any realistic ideas for players. One I can think of would be Riga of Levante, he is a real opportunist player who has sneaked some good goals this year a la Tamudo style and must be a free gift surely as they are going down to the second and dont pay the players anyway. In fact it was reported today they wont turn up for the final match against Madrid. The Captains of all the teams in the first division have signed a petition in support of Levante.
I hope to see some bargain basement ideas………AdiosPosted from

I Think Valecia only need to sell valencia of the three stars between villa, silva and joaquin. And then they need to sell the players who are on lone and olso zigic arizmendi the guy is awful. They also cant afford to seel Albiol he is a great player we need to keep him.
