Reflections on the Last Game of 08/09
By: Cesar | May 30th, 2009
I went back to my 2008/09 Season Preview from late August ‘08 today and here’s what I thought Valencia would do this season.
So although my heart says we’ll win La Liga, the UEFA Cup and storm into next season’s Champions League, my brain tells me we’ll finish mid-table and be forced to buy what we needed this season next season.
So my guess? 7th … UEFA Cup, here we come.
It pains me to say this, but we’re still not good enough. We’ve still got a lot of work to do. Let’s see what happens before the transfer deadline. Maybe we’ll buy an Ayala replacement after all??
Not too far off, eh?
We finished 6th, qualified for next season’s UEFA Europa League but never found that quality Ayala replacement.
Overall, although there’s a slight bitter aftertaste to the season, we did pretty good.
We’re in Europe. We survived a murky budget mess. And both Davids have stated time and time again that they’d like to stay here.
Now that the season’s over, the fun begins.
Will our finances be straightened out? Who’ll run the club after the big meetings of next week? Will we be able to buy any one this summer? Will our stars leave? Who WILL leave?
And on and on …
For now, we had a game to play, the last one of the season, a comfortable 2-0 win over Athletic Bilbao.
Villa, who is still a Valencia player as far as I know, scored both. His two goals gave him 28 for the season, 4 behind Spanish Pichichi Diego Forlan and tied for the most goals in a season in Valencia history with Mario Kempes and Pedja ‘Judas’ Mijatovic.
The game wasn’t anything special. For the people who watched it on the blog’s live chat on the internet stream, it was an exercise in frustration, as the TV channel kept switching between two other simultaneous matches.
Still, I’d say we enjoyed ourselves. We’re a special group, I tell ya!
Our Beloved went ahead after just seven minutes, when Villa latched onto Joaquin’s fabulous cross and fired clinically past Gorka Iraizoz from close range. Joaquin was on fire at the beginning of the match, looking like a man possessed. Today was his 100th league match with Valencia. Will he reach 101?
The Joaquin/Villa combination almost brought a second goal four minutes later, but Villa failed to make decent contact.
Valencia were all over Athletic, though, and a second goal looked imminent.
Villa, Edu and Pablo Hernandez all came close as the home side piled on the pressure in the lead-up to half-time, but Athletic somehow managed to get to the interval just a goal down.
Edu was denied by Gorka as Valencia continued to dominate after half time.
But Valencia also had Cesar (me?) to thank in the following minutes.
Goalkeeper Cesar (oh!), who deserves all the accolades we can throw at him for his awesome, other-worldly play this season, did brilliantly to deny Ion Velez in a one-on-one situation and came out bravely to clear the ball off Fernando Llorente in the 60th minute.
Normal service was resumed after that and Valencia peppered the Athletic goal in the final stages.
Gorka made fine saves to deny Edu and Villa, and the latter also shot straight at the Athletic keeper with five minutes left.
But the Spain striker wrapped up the points for Valencia in the final minute when he swept home Pablo’s cross following a quick breakaway attack.
Fernando Morientes and Curro Torres, whose departures this summer have already been confirmed, came on late to warm applause from the Valencia faithful.
But there was also a feeling that Villa may not reappear in the club’s colors. The unemotional striker, who barely celebrated his two goals, was given a furious send-off by the Mestalla faithful after the game.
Villa said all the right things after the match, claiming he had years left on a contract he wanted to fulfill. But who knows what he’s really thinking? Some of the continent’s biggest teams will be queuing up to sign the prolific Asturian. With our financial situation, can we afford to keep him? Is that the wisest decision we can make for ourselves – and for El Guaje?
Time will tell.
Our Beloved finish a crazy season in sixth place, with 62 points.
18 wins, 12 losses and 8 ties.
For comparison, here’s how we did since 2003-2004.
2003-04 - 23 wins, 7 losses and 8 ties = 77 points, League Champions
2004-05 - 12 wins, 8 losses and 16 ties = 58 points, 7th place.
2005-06 - 19 wins, 7 losses and 12 ties = 69 points, 3rd place.
2006-07 - 20 wins, 12 losses and 6 ties = 66 points, 4th place.
2007-08 - 15 wins, 17 losses and 6 ties = 51 points, 10th place.
2008-09 - 18 wins, 12 losses and 8 ties = 62 points, 6th place.
Our average the last 5 seasons (this one not included)?
17.8 wins, 10.2 losses and 9.6 ties. Rounded up?
18 wins, 10 losses and 10 ties. 64 points.
Pretty much what we did this season.
The numbers basically say we had a very average Valencia season. Nothing more, nothing less.
So maybe we should be happy? What do the mathematicians out there think? I know we have some economists out there … are my numbers correct?
Anyways, I just wanted to justify to myself that this wasn’t a disappointing season. If anything, it was much like the rest, save 2003-04, when we won the title.
Actually, let’s take the title season away (not including this season) and see what we come up with.
16.5 wins, 11 losses and 10 ties. Rounded up?
17 wins, 11 losses and 10 ties. 61 points. So we actually did BETTER this season.
Of course, there are some funky numbers there. Last season’s Koeman disaster didn’t help as far as wins and losses. And Claudio Ranieri’s half-season in charge resulted in a crazy amount of draws.
Still, we didn’t do so bad. We did just about what we always do …
So that’s the final match of the season. 6th place. Lots of changes in store. A successful season in overall terms. MUCH better than last season’s calamity, no doubt.
What does the future hold in store for Valencia CF?
Stay tuned. I’ll be updating the blog often during the summer months. (Maybe a Spain Confederations Cup chat? Stay tuned …)
Something tells me there will be a lot to talk about when it comes to Valencia Club de Futbol.
As the Mestalla turns …

@Quin, I’d say you’re in the ball park. Real is so stupid and rich that we may be able to up the price a little bit, especially if we can get some other potential buyers in the mix. Hopefully Soriano will sell the Mestalla and we won’t have to deal with those mugs in Madrid.

Villa for Negredo + serious cash: this could be VCF’s smartest move in years. Negredo can be as great as Villa with the right “providers” (Silva, Granero…)
Just think of the lineup up front:
– - – - Negredo – - – -
Mata – Silva – Granero – PabloPretty deadly I’d say.
We get rid of the junkyard & oldies (Joaquin, Baraja, Miguel, Moretti, Edu, Angulo) and improve our backline. Add some quality to Fernandes & Alexis.
Should be dandy.

Where’s the DMs in that lineup? And seriously, what is the difference between what we had and that lineup that makes it particularly deadly? Surely, Negredo for Villa doesn’t make it any more deadly? Then we have Granero for a DM. I don’t know how much of a difference it will make going forward, but it will come at a cost at the back.
If we actually had Negredo instead of Villa over the last few seasons and Villa was somewhere else slotting in goal after goal, wouldn’t we be putting up a lineup with Villa in front and calling it deadly?
Changing the lineup alone isn’t going to make them any more deadly than they already are. The problem was with the attitude, the lack of confidence and spirit. A change there is what can make them deadly.

I’d say if we put Granero more into a defensive / true midfielder position, our entire midfield + attack would be more lethal cause of the players being more creative and smarter than we had this year. So if you’d make a midfield out of:
—-Negredo—–
Mata-Silva-Pablo
Fernandes-Granerowouldnt be too bad would it? COuld even switch so make Silva and Granero play something like Iniesta, so more like this:
Mata—-Negredo—Pablo
Silva-Fernandes-Granerowould it work, i dont know, maybe its too offensive, but with a solid defensive line made out of Sanchez-Albiol-Alexis-Mathieu, who knows we could give it a shot…?!

The last line-up would be something like this than, similar to Barca’s line-up:
–Mata—–Negredo—Pablo—
——Silva—–Granero——
———Fernandes———–
Mathieu-Alexis-Albiol-Sanchez
———-Ustari————-I’d sign up for that line-up, ANY DAY!! GO ATTACK GO!!! (If u play stronger team, but in an extra DMF instead or Granero / Silva, and no worries than…

My thing w/ Negredo is that he’s supposedly stated he’d rather go to Madrid … do we want a pesetero like him here, who’ll constantly be thinking of his next pay day?
At least we know Villa is loyal. Negredo wouldn’t be … if he really meant those things …Posted from

Cesar; you’re right; fuck Negredo……

99 out of 100 players who have never played for Real Madrid or Valencia would pick to play for Real. That is just the sad truth. Negredo used to play for their B Team. That being said, Emery used to coach him at Almeria. Negredo has said he would like to play for Emery again…
As for all these lineups… where is all the money gonna come for this? Without selling Villa and Silva we would probably make 30 million euros selling Joaquin, Zigic, Miguel, and Moretti and 5 euros (that right, 5 euros) selling Angulo, Edu, (crap players) etc. Fernando has said we would only use 30% of our sales on new players. Thus, 30 million euros equals 10 million. No way Madrid or Almeria gives up Negredo for that. I don’t think Getafe would give up Granero for that. We need to either sell Villa or Silva to make a BIG move, or do a player swap with Madrid.
Another thing, I LOVE FERNANDES. He is SERIOUSLY my favorite player. But Fernandes at DM? LOL LOL LOL! That would be retarded. He drives the team forward. Besides, Fernandes at DM means Marchena goes back into defense. UGH… Marchena is good at DM, shit at CB. Marchena/Fernandes will be our two central midfielders.
Everyone wants to buy Granero and Negredo (admitedly I want Negredo) but we need to address DEFENSE first. We sound like Madridistas talking about new signings. All offense, no defense. Defense is our problem guys. Lets deal with that before we deal with the attack.

Man, if we only had unlimited resources like Man U and Real Madrid. But then we wouldn’t be Valencianistas. Amunt!

Unlimited resources eh? We’re £667 million in debt according to last year’s accounts. We just wear it well, with a philosophy of “if we keep winning competitions, it wont catch up with us”. A bad year when we dont win anything and we’ll see what happens. Until then… Luckily for us, our takeover and the debt put onto the club as a result of it has coincideded with one of our most successful periods ever. But maybe it only takes 1 season to make our house of cards fall. We’ll see.

@ Kyle
I don’t know if u ever watched Fernandes play at Everton but he originally is a DMF. That being sad, i can’t even count the times that our supposed CMF’s are playing at the same line as our defense, pretending to be defenders (Baraja, Albelda, Edu). Fernandes is great at DMF cause he works hard and kicks ass, if we have Silva and Granero in front of him it would result in a very powerful midfield where also Fernandes could pressure the opposing team. Plus, imo we should sell Marchena asap, so where’s the problem??Posted from

Personally, I just like Fernandes going forward more. Kinda like Michael Essien at Chelsea. He can play DM, but he is a beast when you just let him play. That is what I want to do with Fernandes. Have Marchena or whoever at DM, and let Fernandes be the driving force in midfield. I just think he is a waste of talent at DM.

Also, I just think Fernandes is far to skillful to be held back playing DM. Check out his videos…

I want this guy going forward, not sitting back in front of Albiol and Alexis.

Fernandes is an old fashioned box to box midfielder. A Baraja not so much an Albelda. There’s no rule you need one of each in the side though. A player who goes both ways, up and down the pitch can be partnered with another player who does the same as long as there is some chemistry between them and some understanding that they cant both push forward at the same time.
Fernandes was box to box at Everton too, and for Portugal (and under 21s, where he he looked a monster of a player at the under 21 euros/world cup a few seasons ago next to Veloso).
What he needs is a player who has some discipline next to him, allowing him to get towards the box and get some shots in at times – without that player being a makelele sitting in front of the defence the whole time and making your team negative. Marchena has been impressive in that role anyway.
You already have a guy who likes to play from quite deep returning from a loan this season and if you keep him, he’ll be given some games next to Fernandes. It’s foolish to think that videos prove much of anything, but if they did – this one would win

@ Lillo, I think it is wrong to judge performances on videos and in any case this one seems to indicate 50 ways to fall down. If you put Barajas 3 goals this year on video together with his near misses you could have clubs lining up to sign him but then you dont see the other 75% shots that go sailing miles over the top or wide or the long passes that never reach anyone at all.
Baneger has been with Atletico for a season and unless they have recently changed their mind, they dont intend to take up their option to buy him, that must tell you something. The 24 games he has been involved in for Atletico has resulted in 1 goal and O assists and in that time managed 2 red cards. Our hot headed Abelda in 30 games recd. no reds and even King of the Cards Marchena only managed 3 . So maybe Baneger is trouble that is not worth the effort…..AlmendrasPosted from

i dnt agree, everybdy seems to count the assists and the goal scoring record of banega in Atletico, well in around 5 games last season, he gave 4 assists which put the striker in forn of our goal! an i think we scored 3 of them! maybe the player didnt fit in thier squad! but no one could ever say that banega has no talent, and that hes got talent, then why leave him! Id say bring him back! in 2 years this guy will be something else!

@Lillo, if you have 30 million pounds to spend on Berbatov, I’d say you have close to unlimited resources. And for future reference, here is the Man U blog: http://manu.theoffside.com/

Hi as it is the end of the Liga I would just like to point this out. After the loss of Real Madrid against Barcelona they went on to then lose the next three matches. Why ? not because they didnt want to win, because they owe it to their fans who pay an arm and a leg to get in, but because they had no hidden drive inside, the balloon had burst. Players get stale and there is nothing worse than a string of losses. They should go at least three weeks without seeing a football.
What have we got but Bosque calling up five of our players for this wretched Confederate thing whatever it is, even Silva who has been injured for us in the last few games. Give the guys a break for God’s sake. No doubt tacked on to this will be a few ‘friendlies’ in training for the World Cup. This is no way to build a new team. I’d rather not see Negredo(assuming we keep all the good guys) because he will be the next one for Bosque and we will be supplying six, how can a trainer form new methods and tactics with half the team missing
not to mention subject to injuries.
Three teams have gone down to second, there must be some talent there that is just waiting for the chance to be playing for one of the bigger clubs.
‘Gather ye rose-buds while ye may’ with the correct attention they can turn into a glorious bunch,,,,AlmendrasPosted from

Ok, he’s probably not spectacular, but Banega got talent and his young. He has creativity and it won’t take long before his eyes for the goal develop. Baraja WAS good. His time has passed and the same goes for Albelda. Now, it’s time to put a new generation of players.
Fernandes is naturally a player that will act as a creative and defensive midfielder. However, he can’t cover up all the midfield… This is why he needs someone to support him. Marchena was good as a defensive midfielder, and he’s the captain so… He’ll play that position too. Then again, you have Banega that will come back. The best solution is to let all the youngsters play and gradually let aside the veterans. Plus, let’s not forget about Michel! He has a sparkle that Valencia need. I consider him as Pablo: a late bloomer. He could be used eventually as a attacking midfielder (the future Angulo?)

Timothy, I’m glad you found that link. Since you like mentioning United a lot, you might use it to actually read some news and fall over some understanding of the club. Because you’re like a tv show that doesnt make sense at the moment when you try and talk about English football (basically every other post) – LOST.
And yes, absolutely videos dont prove anything. Which is why I said they dont before I linked that video
but I’m also guessing I’m the only one talking about Banega who has actually seen him play 5 or so matches. In fact, from the sounds of it and the fact the last person I asked didnt respond – I wonder who has actually seen him at all.Posted from
