Real Madrid and Euro Vase Opponents
By: Cesar | December 19th, 2008
So here we are, two weeks after the debacle at the Nou Camp, facing one of our arch-rivals: Real Madrid.
While I’m not exactly AntiMadridista, as the shirt in the photo says, I can understand Valencia fan’s feelings towards the capital’s club. Constant media attention, the biggest stars, the 2000 Champions League final, Mijatovic, Mendieta and this year’s SuperCopa.
That’s a lot of reasons to feel AntiMadridismo …
MARCA’s favorite team were pasted by the Catalan giants 2-0 last week. Although Madrid came out on the losing end, the Spanish press heaped praise on the Merengues for staying in the game … or at the very least, not losing 4-0.
Yes, Madrid showed some heart in staying with Barca for the duration of the game. But remember, Bernd Schuster was fired for saying the truth: that Madrid had no chance against Barca at the Nou Camp.
2-0 for new coach Juande Ramos and all of a sudden, everything’s ok? Hmm, we’ll see about that.
Our rivalry with Madrid goes back farther than the days of Zinedine Zidane and Ronaldo. For me, the rivalry’s been strong for many years. It really ignited when we met the Merengues in the 2000 Champions League final, our hearts breaking when Raul slipped a 3rd goal past a vulnerable and exposed Santiago Canizares at the end of the game. (Fast forward to 4:55 if you really wanna see that goal …)
They’re Real Madrid. That’s reason enough to dislike them.
Madrid will most likely be without inspirational leader and former Spanish national team captain Raul, who’s suffering from a bout of influenza. I don’t mean to kick the man while he’s down, but this would be a good thing for us. Raul was an aggressive distributor of the ball at last week’s El Clasico and his absence would be felt, especially if Wesley Sneijder is also out with injury.
Gabriel Heinze and Pepe have yet to recover from their injuries but Miguel Torres is available again, while Fabio Cannavaro has shaken off the blow to his thigh he picked up at the end of El Clasico.
Marcelo and Arjen Robben are back from suspension. Sergio Ramos will be out after reaching his yellow card limit.
We’re short Emiliano Moretti, which most weeks wouldn’t mean much, since even when he’s playing we’re short Emiliano Moretti. But he’s looked a decent player of late, so this could effect us.
Asier Del Horno will take his spot. His familiarity with Robben from their Chelsea days might be a good thing for us. Then again, we’re speaking about Del Horno.
David Silva will most likely be in the starting 11 and that’s a wonderful thing. His presence will be both inspirational and uplifting to a Valencia squad looking for revenge for our humiliating loss to Real MARCA in the Spanish Super Cup a few months ago …
It’s going to be a tight game. It’s going to be an interesting affair. In my mind, this is Spain’s #2 match-up, above even Sevilla-Betis and the Madrid derby.
Here’s what goal.com has to say about the match:
Madrid will be out for a slice of their own revenge after stumbling 3-2 at home the last time both teams met in the league.
As a testament to how fierce the rivalry between the two sides has become over the past few years, the head-to-head record has been fairly even. In the past ten meetings in La Liga, Los Blancos have won four times while Los Che have picked up three wins.
This could be another intriguingly tight affair or an entertainingly open game, a la the Supercopa, but the re-invigorated spirit that has permeated the entire white-half of Madrid should give them the advantage.
Real Madrid 2-1 Valencia
Uggh … why do I read them again?
Anyways, for a look at last season’s 3-2 victory, courtesy of an Arizmendi goal late in the game, make your way to foroche.com.
I dunno what to make of this game.
While it’s true that Madrid are riding a three-game losing streak and are under new management, they did play better against Barca than many expected. Now I’m not going to join the mad circus of orgasmic journalists claiming that Madrid are back. They’re in dire straights when it comes to the league.
But that being said, they can’t afford to lose this match. Not to us, not now.
We’ll be uplifted by the return of Silva. We’ll have revenge on our minds. We’ll also see some light at the end of the tunnel, as a win would put us 7 points ahead of the Spanish press’s team.
I’m conflicted. I’d really like to say we’ll take all three points at the Bernabeu. But in all likelihood, I see a draw and a share of the spoils. I’d be happy with that, no?
In the other big news of the day, we found out our opponents in the next round of the UEFA Cup (Euro Vase). They’re Dynamo Kiev, the Ukranian superpower.
Kiev featured in this season’s Champions League, finishing third in group G, below group winners Porto and runner-ups Arsenal.
Are they a tough team? I’d say so. But I’m also of the opinion we can defeat them.
Should we advance, we’d play either Italy’s Sampdoria or the Ukraine’s FC Metalist Kharkiv. So can anyone see us advancing deep into this tournament?
The first leg’s in late-February, so more on these games at a later date …
Speaking of Europe, what do you think of the Champions League draw?
I’d say it’s pretty saucy. Rafa Benitez’s Liverpool taking on Real Madrid, Lyon to lose to Barcelona, Jose Mourinho making his return to England with Inter Milan to face holders Manchester United and Chelsea taking on their former coach, the bumbling Claudio Ranieri and Juventus.
Should be a smorgasbord of football come late February. I’m quite excited …
More on Valencia:
- Villa’s proud to be with Valencia. Good lad.
- If Oasis’ Manchester City want Villa, they can have him … for €127 million! Hey, if they’re willing to pay that much, enjoy England Guaje!
- We played some French team in the snow a few days ago in Euro Vase … 2-2 draw and Dynamo Kiev, here we come.
- Is our 8-ft striker Nikola Zigic off to Racing Santander? We’ll see …
- Big-boned defender Miguel would like to sink his teeth into English football one day. Watch our, Mr. Brito. I hear English strikers are high in saturated fat …
- As always, I’ll be holding court at Nevada Smith’s to watch the Madrid-Valencia match-up. Rumors abound that some blog readers will be there … I hope this is true, provided I’m not snowed in … I’d love to meet you and watch our Beloved whoop some Merengue arse.
It’s on 11th Street and 3rd Avenue in Manhattan. So make sure to show up and say hello!
- Big game for our club tomorrow. Let’s cross our fingers that Valencia show some pride and take all three points. AMUNT!!!!

@ DJ: Definitely agree with you on Fernandes, I just wish everyone gave everything they had like he does in every match. Our most impressive player tonite (or Renan – who was very good today).

Did Valencia just drop in form?, or was it just the easy matches at the start of the season that we were playing well? I really hope we can beat Atletico next week, there looking pretty strong.

@Johnnie and Fayez
Take your feet off the pedal guys.I see where both of you are coming from.
This is fucking Valencia,we should be used to the heartbreak by now.Maybe its the Euphoria of how we started the season that a lot of us are still hanging on.
Dont forget that the only change to the disaster of last team was the inclusion of a weaker goalie.Posted from

chill out guys! we r on the same boat here! i think we played a good game.. our middle line was great, our attacking line was ok but our defence got lots of holes in it! i think marchena isnt a good player. he shouldnt play! Albelda got his act together nd is ok now! albiol is good nd miguel is a clas player! I say put a player with villa in front nd see wht villa does, villa has small body so he cnt fight defenders like ibramovic.. so he needs less players marking him, nd u cn only achieve tht by making the apponent;s defence line further apart! i think we need olic! get olic now!

@ Fayez
I looked up the word democracy and got this: The loss of freedom for the illusion of influence
What i ment to say was, when you (and everybody in general, including me) are starting to use such language (like i did last week) than it can be expected that people disagree and use hard language against you (which nobody did last week). Aside from weather I agree with you or not, which clearly that i dont in this situation haha, its just after such a important game we all get dragged into it and than you can expect hard discussions. Anyway, lets not make this some stupid fight or what ever, i guess we said what we wanted so ill leave it at this. Better we kick Robbens ass together!!!
@ Ali
Btw, i thought Joaquin was a great joy to watch, he made a complete mess our of their right side and created a lot of danger! But it was certainly clear we need to stop playing with 1 striker, and even with an attacking midfielder, cause almost all our attacks start at the sides, leaving this huge gap in the middle of the field where it is actually better to attack…Posted from

ya juaquin was good but nothing wow …u know? just like mata,, he was good but nothing wow…. villa on the other hand played a decent game, id give him 8/10, but he misssed tht open goal chance. thing is we lost… letts move on! letts win the eufa and work on the first 4 untill our new staduim is done, nd thn we could get some cash to buy some worldclass players like we have always done!

Ok i understand you hate madrid and are all upity cause we lost. but what a nice way to lose. We played a great game.. we attacked solidly and our wings played great ala Joaquin.
Other than the firdt goal which was shocking we got our crap together and took it to them. Either team could have won. we dominated possesion and they double teamed Villa and he still managed some shots.. though that first miss was a facepalmer. It was frustrating cause you knew we should have scored several times.. same goes for madrid though. Marchena’s red card was super annoying cause arjen robbin is a known bastard diver yet refs fall for it everytime. That said marchena was searching for the red from the moment the whistle blew.. i would have pulled him after the first yellow.
i didnt think del horno played that bad.. he was stacked against a super winger and i though did over all pretty well. No worse than moretti or maduro.
Anyways lets ghope we play this hard against the rest and we will end up top 4. im not as angry i saw a solid game.. lots of action and by no means can i be angry at a team that never gave up even after going a goal down early on.
and kudos to rennan.. great keeping saterday… keep it up.

@ Ali
1.i agree with you that villa need a striker to play with.he gets tired to win the ball and the he can’t finish the chances.i think we should have keeped zigic.
2.marchena.oh dear.he doesn’t have the ability to be our captain.he is a constant danger for the red card.he was good at the euro because he had puyol’s safety.
if we could buy one or two good players…………
as for the math we played really but we lost because our squad’s potential is until there.we dont have now the strength to be first or second.we have to fight for the fourth or at the best for the 3d placePosted from

hi ,
how r u ? not so fine ( as i read )
Guys we r not fighting here , we r supporting the same team , like the same players , want the same thing : VALENCIA TO BE THE BEST IN THE WORLD !
it is just a chatting blog where we can find others that shares something with us , VALENCIA FANS
the upper comments are about to be a debate () barca & real fans
about the match , i don’t think we deserved a victory . WE & OUR CIRCUMSTANCES didn’t point to that . about Robben ( who was expected to be their dangerous player , as seen in the super cup match ) had to be man marked with a right footed defender on the left flank ( alexis ) who is injured , then our best DL is moretti ( injured ) so we used del horno who can’t even rece with robben ….
Villa was marvelous , he ( by himself )created so many chances , though he missed the only cross from Juaquin
Emery was so late for silva , Baraja was just like a Duck ( but the last header was decent ) , albelda , Miguel , Albiol were ( doing their routine job ( normal ) , Fernandes was our best ( only one ball went wrong , the throw in from their left back , u can count on that )
Finally , Marchena he was the main cause , before the RED , Vicente , Moro were about to be IN . we were converting into attack with 3 players at least defending , we could have scored at least one goal .
BUT FINALLY , i can accept that the FATE made us LOSE this match .
@@@@ CESAR ,
Hurry up with the ” identities ” post
we seems to need it ,
BTW , i think we really needed that league stop , we should reevaluate our position , players , get our new Signing”s” take a deeeeeep breath , and KICK the rest of the leg OFF
thanx

@Fayez: My apologies for telling you to shut the hell up, I was just a bit amazed that you could call our players “overpaid shitheads” after putting in one of the most energetic performances I’ve seen this year. Yesterday against RM was a far cry from the capitulation against Barcelona. If we play like we did yesterday over the rest of the season we should easily finish in the top 4. Amunt Che Siempre

@ Daniel and Johnnie :
I apologize if I offended anyone with my harsh language, however I still think our team should do more than this.
It hurts when I see how Villarreal and Sevilla play with lesser players (at least in terms of salaries and price tag) and still manage to get results. For example, today’s game between Barca and Villarreal was a clear example of how much passion and pride these Villarreal players have even against Barca. They had 10 shots on goal and were leading the game and lost with pride. I dont mind losing if we had that many chances on goal against Barca. But when we played against Barca we barely did anything and Fernandes was the only player that gave it all he had. The players just switch off and the same happened against Madrid (but to a lesser extent). If all the players gave all they have like Fernandes and Renan against Madrid we would have won the match by a fair margin.
Those players at Sevilla and Villarreal get far paid less than our players but their results are almost as good as us. This is a clear indication that something is wrong and they should do more about it. Our club is in a financial crisis and our players have to honor their price tag and their hefty salaries and start playing like the 3rd best paid players in Spain. So why cant our players give a bit more? I know we arent as good as Barca but why dont we give 100% effort in every match? I am 100% sure Villa, Mata, Joaquin, Baraja, Albelda, Miguel, Albiol and Marchena were capable of more than the display we saw against Madrid. I just dont think that display was good enough for Valencia against a depleted Real Madrid. We must not forget that Real hit the post twice so it should have been 3 goals for them.
We should stop blaming the refs for our losses and focus on asking more of these players. Their aim should be 2nd place this year. This is what lesser teams like Sevilla and Villarreal are aiming for.

@ Fayez
I apologize to you as well man, i shared Daniels feeling of amazement but i also know where you are coming from. And in some way you are right about the motivation, cause against Barcelona we enter the game expecting to lose, but against RM we entered to win and look how it made us play, in my eyes certainly fighting enough. But, maybe its time for us to have a Guardiola move and set some new rules, fire half the squad and get some new blood??? Thats what ive been asking for for a long time anyway.
Anyway, a merry christmas to you guys already, i hope we are ok again
