Racing and a Chelsea Link?

By: Cesar | October 30th, 2008

After thumping third division side Portugalete 4-1 in the Copa Del Rey midweek (I’d previously said Segunda B side Portugalete … ), Our Beloved are back at the Mestalla for a Saturday evening match against 17th-place Racing Santander.

Nicola Zigic’s former club is struggling, scoring a scant 5 goals during the season.
They could have used the tall Serbian, who they wanted back on loan during the off-season.

Unfortunately, it didn’t happen. And now, they’re not firing on any cylinders.

As Spanish scribe Guillem Balague says in his preview of the game this week:

When Valencia play away from home, they are much less aggressive and they don’t get into fifth gear; they just rely on the goals of Juan Mata or David Villa, who have scored 13 out of the team’s 18 goals between them.

But at home, they’re a different proposition. They find that extra gear and on paper, they should take all three points.

In fact, this game could even be the final nail in the coffin for Jose Ramon Lopez Muniz’s tenure. Expectations were huge after Racing qualified for Europe but it just hasn’t happened in the league.

They tried to get Nikola Zigic back in the summer but it didn’t work out and it’s quite clear they still need a striker.

So in case you didn’t know, now you do.

We should get the three points. We should stay top of the table. We should … we should … we should …

No offense to Racing, but when do we play a good team? Oh, that’s right. The end of the month and a match against Sevilla.

Maybe I should shut up and enjoy our silky run through the jobbers of La Liga. But I want to see our club tested, our backs against the wall.

I want to see how Emery responds to the loss of a lead against one of the giants of Spanish football. I want to see how the club operates during THAT run in December, when we play Barcelona, Espanyol, Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid and Villarreal in successive weeks.

I want to see us get out of that run intact, knowing this incantation of Valencia CF is ready and the past can be put where it belongs – the past.

Until then, I’ll shut up and enjoy this. First place. Best striker in the world. A good, young coach.

Things could be a lot worse …

Then again, anxiety exists.

Today, diminutive striker Juan Mata said the team wants to test themselves against the best of Spain. At the top of that list? Barcelona.

“We want to measure our level against the biggest teams,” says the striker, whose tiny, small voice caused the journalist to lose him as Mata scampered around a desk, behind a locker and between the writer’s feet while fielding queries.

“I think the team is very good at the moment, focused on each game and together.”

True, we’ve only played lesser teams. But so? We played who we had to play, no?

Mata signals Barcelona out as their toughest rivals and also spoke today about their upcoming match with Racing Santander this weekend.

“I like the way Barcelona play, based on possession, going forward and having players to change games. They are an example for everyone and I believe they are our strongest rivals,” Mata said while poking his head out from one of the coffees on Curro Torres’s serving tray.

“Racing have a great team and coach and they will make it a difficult match,” said Mata before assuring that he thinks we’ll be able to take all three points.

The striker also spoke about the 4-1 victory over Portugalete in the Copa Del Rey Wednesday and said Our Beloved want to defend the title we won last year.

“There are seasons when Primera teams lose to Segunda teams and we did not want that to happen to us. It will be difficult to overturn the result and we approach this tournament with the desire to repeat the success of last year,” he concluded.

One question: Who translates this stuff?? No one talks like that …

Anyways …

Two news tidbits …

1 – Chelsea are after our Valencia B youth product, right back Ximo Navarro. Who?

Beats me. He was called up for the midweek Copa game, but didn’t get any action.

According to the report, he’s seen as a back-up player for big-boned Portugal international Miguel.

His promise for Valencia’s B team has reportedly attracted Chelsea’s interest and Navarro suggests he would consider a move to Stamford Bridge.

But for now, he wants to stay with us.

“This subject lies with the club,” said Navarro, who has yet to sign a professional contract.

“I am happy in Valencia and my dream is to get into the first team, but if any other offers arrive it is normal to study them.”

Ok …

2 – Remember Brazilian teenager Keirrison? The young, hot-shot striker we almost bought a few weeks ago?

He’s supposedly off to Liverpool. Uggh …

The Daily Mirror reports that the forward has been offered to Liverpool and not to us, even though we’ve been tracking him since he was drafted into the Coritiba squad in 2007.

The teenager has gone on to score over 50 goals in just over 100 matches and has now come to prominence across the Atlantic.

Barcelona also want him.

What does all of this mean? Who knows? It’s all speculation at this point.

At the end of the day, how will we be able to compete with the likes of Barcelona and Liverpool financial-wise?

Age-old question, but one I can’t answer at the present moment.

What I do know is that if the Brazilian wants to play with a squad who’d welcome him with open arms, here we are.

As long as we don’t overpay, of course …

Haha i thought i was a pessimist normally concerning VCF, but you guys are not much better. But this time, i think you are too harsh. Villa might only have scored once, but he and the rest of the team worked their fucking ass off to be on Santanders half the last 45 min. costantly, trying to get through in the poring rain, trying to break down a side which has been defending 90 minutes scoring 4 times out of about 4 chances. Renan could never have cought the 2nd of Tchite, it was such a great goal, lethal attacking yesterday by Santander when they attacked. Emery did exactly what he should have done by getting in Moro and out Moretti. But we couldnt bring them down, we had chances, but it didnt happen. Racing was the efficient and very lucky side yesterday, and i have seen a team fighting for every ball, trying to get something out of the dirt on that field, and i am pleased with the work. Lets hope next time we pay more attention at the back and have some luck again! AMUNT!!!

Nothing is lost but we cant afford to lose the next matches against getafe and gigon because right after we have to endure a series of dificult games against sevilla barca etc.We are just 2 points from top.

I personally think the loss was mostly Renan’s fault. In all the previous matches we played he still has not made a single convincing save for a real chance on goal. Every dangerous shot on goal was conceded. The problem with Renan is that he seems to have really slow reflexes.
One of the main reasons why Racing won yesterday was because their goalkeeper was on form. I know he let one goal in, but he denied Villa twice (and one of them was a one on one situation), Mata and Joaquin. That is the difference a goalkeeper makes to a game.
Racing barely had more than 3 or 4 shots on goal and they scored all of them.

Regarding Emery’s tactics, I dont think he did anything wrong, but he should start thinking of maybe starting Timo again if its not too late for that. I know Timo isnt the best goalkeeper but he certainly is better than Renan at the moment.

I think we should be calm because our team is NOT the unbeatable Arsenal of a couple of years; the season is not lost, I knew times like these would come, lets be optimistic and show our support even though we lost, the team made mistakes but who the hell is perfect?????

Heads up, folks. I’m just visiting from over at the Barcelona side of this blog. We’re really looking forward to the December match (I have tickets) as it will be for a definite top of the table. Your lads are playing great football this season, the stumble against Racing notwithstanding. Hey, at least you didn’t lose to Numancia, right?

Pitches were bogs everywhere in the Liga yesterday. Anybody who saw any of the match that our lads played against Malaga would have been appalled, as balls stopped in a puddle of goo, only to have players slide past it in the mud. Craziness.

I figure a top 3 position for your side this season, barring any injuries or other funkiness. And given the mess of last season, that would be quite a remarkable turnaround.

So good luck this season, except against us, it goes without saying.

c’mon fayez renan is human, hes got his ups and downs, even casillas got 4 golas in his net last season against getafe! letts not over react guys. But seriously we r not winning anything this season, letts just aim for the top 4 to get some money from CL and letts hand in there untill we sell mestalla and move to our new staduim, then only we could buy world class players again!

Ok i think everyone is being a little harsh on our poor che. The weather was a massive factor.. playing in these conditions was brutal and you can tell it hurt Valencias regular flowing game. It allowed more long ball play and that meant our defence which was shakey to fail at key moments. valencia lost in a game where they didnt do anything “wrong”. Valencia controlled the match against a very defensive side playing long ball counter attacking. their goalie was for the most part “ON” and if made it difficult. Iw ould be shocked if in normal conditions valencia failed to win. We easily should have been up 2-0 at the half only for them to be saved by good goaltending and luck. The second half The cold wet took its toll and the game became a kick fest with next to no real organized play. And in the mud fight they came out on top. I wouldnt blame Renan too much.. only one goal would i attribute to him.. the others he had little he could have done to prevent them. The defence was a bit disorganized and it showed.

lets pick ourselves out of the mud… literally and be ready for the next game.

@ Ali : I know Renan is only human but he hasnt shown to be a good goalkeeper. Everyone has their ups and downs but so far Renan hasnt had any “ups” in the past matches he played. I have seen all the matches Valencia have played this season and he didnt make a single crucial save. The only reason why it appears that we havent conceded that many goals this season is because our defence is organized well and our midfield is helping in defending. Plus lets not forget we had luck on our side in most matches.
Even when Casillas or Valdes have a terrible night they still make a string of good saves, the same goes for every really good goalkeeper around. I really hope im wrong but from what ive seen so far Timo seems to be better than Renan and it was a mistake to buy him. Trust me an excellent goalkeeper is the difference sometimes (we can thank Canizaries for the last time we won the league).
I think we should have moved for the Valladolid goalkeeper (Asenjo?), he is young and talented and miles better than Renan.

It was a good match..the pitch was terrible..Not our usual flowing football..I think ppl are being to critical on renan, though i have to agree he has not pulled any noteworthy save..Timo was the same…The only good match that he had was at the bernebeu and he was aided by a very poor higuain and loads of luck..looks like he is leaving in january.. Kinda miss cani..though at times he made terrible mistakes he would always pull out wonder saves..renan is still 24..with time he ll surely become better..

What worries me is this: Timo will be out in January, that’s confirmed now, so we’ll be left with Renan (no. 1) and Guaita (no. 2). Now THAT’S our big problem. Suddenly our midfield/defensive holes seem of little importance compared with this mess we have on the goalline. Renan is good enough to be our second goalie (for Copa matches for example), nothing more; he played 15 games since he came and did not induce much confidence in me, sorry.

Games such as this one would surely come.I saw it coming did you? I think we shouldn’t put all of the blames on Renan cos he’s human afterall. We paid for being too wasteful, we should have killed the game off in the first half. I want to recomend one of these nigerian hotshots to valencia: IK UCHE (GETAFE) he’s not a newcommer to spanish football, presently he’s unhappy cos he only play cameo roles i.e from the bench. OBAFEMI MARTINS(newcastle) and JOSEPH AKPALA (club brugge) the belgian goalking. It’s hi time we double our support and love for ‘our beloved’, we must get ourselves out of this dirt (yes dirt) and keep our fingers crossed. I’m one of those fans who believes this once again is our year to win the liga. To Fayez,Ali,Alemandras,de rogue, johnnie walker, CESAR and everyone who’s been keeping this blog moving i’ll say more grease to your elbow. Let’s keep the blog rolling.

You can’t blame just Renan, since our attack was simply bad. It was bad game for Villa and Mata was invisible. Why no one notices that?

@ K : Youre right about Villa and Mata being rather tame against Racing. But I think the comments about Renan have more to do with his overall performance in the past matches and not just in the past match. I dont think Renan has made a single good save in any of the matches he has played with us. But if we take the Racing keeper (just as a simple example here) he made 4 crucial saves in the last match alone. So if those chances all went into goal then the scoreline would have been different.

Its just not comforting watching every shot on target from our opponents go directly into goal. I mean I hope im wrong and maybe its because Renan is still young and is new to the league, but Valencia deserve a better performance from him.

Renan has made some very nice saves if you care to download and watch th egames over. He has made a couple nice dive saves off of free kicks and in the game before this one made 2 vital stops on break aways from the flank bearing down on his goal. is he the best.. no.. i would have loved to see Palop back home or get Reina when we could have. Even kemeni would have been nice. But we have Renan an about average goalie.. lets work with him till we find a new number 1

News and rumors from around the world; Aparently, we are closer to sign Kalinic than we think even though we face some competition from an Italian club.
Liverpool and Arsenal will try sign our best defender and captain Raul Albiol (which I doubt is gonna leave)
In an interview, Robben said the thoughest defender he ever faced in his life is our own Miguel (I’m glad to hear that our players are being respected)
“The Rumor” there has been rumors all over the Internet that Manchester City’s owners were gonna try to buy our beloved club but Soriano smashed those rumor by saying he didn’t know about it BUT he also said that the club might be sold in the future in order to ease the financial situation at the club.

Any more news or comments? Don’t hesitate to post them…..
