Que Lento! - How Slow!
By: Cesar | July 11th, 2007
So … anything new? How are you guys doing?
Hot out there, no? Umm … well … hmm …
This feels like the extent of news coming out of Valencia these days.
Slim & none.
Yes, we learned that our presentation game is August 19th against Parma.
We know that we’ll play in the Emirates Cup in London at the end of July against the likes of Inter Milan and Arsenal.
We know that we’ll play in Champions League qualification in August, against a yet-to-be-named team.
And we know the team will come back to training within the week.
That’s it?? Where are all the signings? Where are the name players we were promised?
I know, I’m being a bit impatient. But I love this team and I’m frustrated by the lack of movement in the transfer market.
Oh, look. Barcelona just bought another player - Milito. A player we could have gotten and probably needed. (Milito was Barca’s 237th buy of the summer.)
Andrade’s off to Juventus. Another player we could have used.
Anelka’s staying put. Pouting, of course.
Porto wants too much money for Lucho.
Talks for Sneijder died with Carboni’s reign.
Is that it? I read that Ivan Helguera (pictured, above) is someone Quique’s interested in as back-up for the center back position … is this what it’s coming to? Re-treads and used parts?
Please tell me this isn’t the kind of team we’re building.
We’re so close. We’re right there with the best of them. Even with Real Madrid’s precarious nature and Barcelona’s ‘New Galacticos’ policy. We’re right there, just as good as them, just as talented …
Can we please add some re-enforcements, spend wisely and round out this super-talented squad?

Soldado has just renewed with Real Madrid. I know we are not very much linked to him. It’s just another bubble exploded. We are far running out of choice of CM, ST and maybe DC. Sad summer…I miss Carboni already.

I agree Cesar, seems like most of Valencia’s transfer sagas start off with interest in a player we could use (a la Sneijder and Lucho), selling club demanding more money or player demanding higher wages, talks becoming stalled. We publicly know thats the case with Sneijder and Lucho but who knows how many other players this could be the case with (Trezequet? Andrade? Milito? Soldado? Everyone we’ve unsuccessfully chased?)

Hold on a sec there, Cesar. Barcelona’s 237th buy? You mean 4th. How many new players has Valencia brought in? The answer is 5. They’re just not as big of names as Barca got. (but I think we spent more money too)
If you want to “spend wisely and round out this super-talented squad” you’re going to have to settle for not getting the Abidals and Militos of the world. But if you do want those players, in today’s absurd market, you have to be willing to break the bank (and yeah, I know that sucks and isn’t fair, etc, but it’s the way it is right now, unfortunately).

I guess the perception I have is that Barcelona is buying the world and we’re getting nothing.
Ya, I guess we have bought 5 guys … Hildebrand, Alexis, Arizmendi, Sunny & Mata. Although the last two were signed months ago. And won’t really be helping the team anytime soon.
Yes, the system stinks but it is the system in place for now. Nothing we can do about that. I’m absurdley jealous of the money some teams have, but I’m more jealous of an administration team that gets it right … Valencia doesn’t have that and hasn’t had that for some time.Posted from

I don’t like Helguera…he’s 32 years old!we need a young player…but no too!we need someone player that have experience to teach Albiol and Alexis…but now I’m listening the radio and say that Quique has called Helguera to sign by 1′8 millions and say that Oporto now wants 25 millions to Lucho Gonzalez, mmm… more expensive,I prefer Sneijder, and I hope that Nery Castillo comes to Valencia cf.I like this player!

No i think Helguera was a good pick up because A. he was a free transfer. B. He will be a solid experienced CB. C. we need somebody to help teach our young defence.
32 is not that old for some players especially when you consider Ayala was in his 30s and is considered one of the finest defenders in the world right now. Zambrotta is 30 Edmilson is 30. These guys all play at the top clubs. Why because on defence experience is more important than youth. Strikers try to trick defenders and outplay them.. by the time your 30 and been defending for 10 years you know all teh tricks and dont fall for them.
