Pre-Xmas Eve Valencia Tidbits

By: Cesar | December 23rd, 2008

So what do you want under your Valencia Xmas tree this year?

A Top 4 finish?
A striker to play behind David Villa?
A creative midfielder?
That all-elusive central defender in the Roberto Ayala mold?

How about all of the above?

Ok, maybe I’m asking for too much.

As we approach the Big Retail Holiday otherwise known as Christmas here in the States, some tidbits to cool you over until Valencia play against Atletico Madrid in the New Year …

- Could former Arsenal and current oft-injured Valencia midfielder Edu be on his way out?

The Brazilian is apparently attracting interest from Portsmouth, according to statements made by Valencia today.

Portsmouth just sold Lassana Diarra to Real Madrid for £20 million, so they’ve money to burn.
Still, Edu’s always hurt … odd move, don’t you say? Edu joined Valencia from Arsenal in May 2005 on a free transfer. He’s made 50 appearances for the Spanish club, scoring 3 goals. He’s also been injured for about 878 games, scoring 0 goals. He’s won 18 caps for Brazil.

- Mestalla will be the host of the 2009 Copa Del Rey final, in honor of our 90th anniversary. How nice.

- Midfielder Pablo Hernandez has two 2009 resolutions: to help Valencia finish in the Top 4 and to actually like, play …

“We are happy, we are in the Champions League places and that is our goal,” he mused.

“My aim is to get in the team, to win a place in the eleven, and to win a title that we can dedicate to the fans.”

Pablo has been at Valencia since 2001 but despite the club loaning him out to Cadíz and Getafe, he has not found playing time easy to come by, and at the age of 23, rumors have surfaced that he could leave the Mestalla in the future.

I hope not. I think Pablo’s a true talent. He just needs to play more, just like he said today …

- Barcelona want David Villa …

So do Manchester City, Manchester United, Real Madrid, Chelsea, Arsenal, the New York Yankees, the Celtics and the Miami Dolphins … thing is, we have him and don’t want to sell …

According to Spanish filth MARCA, Club Catalunya had a €35 million offer rejected for him today.

Apparently, we won’t negotiate for anything below €40 million.

Yawn …

- Joaquin thinks that losing 4-0 to Barcelona at the Nou Camp and 1-0 to Madrid at the Bernabeu is progress. He said as much today …

The big-grinned Andalucian said, “After three matches against top teams to finish the first-half of the season, we are feeling good and positive.” I’m glad he feels this way …

“The team is in the top part of the table and we expect that we can improve that in the second-half of the season.”

As far as his personal progress, Pisha said, “I am doing very good, I am playing games, getting minutes, and little by little, I expect to be the Joaquin that the fans expect.”

Little by little? How about faster and faster? How about our next game, eh?

“This year the coach is giving me confidence, confidence that I’ve needed to play football as I’ve done and to reach that level, as I did at Betis.”

Remember when Joaquin was the guy coveted by the Madrids and Chelseas of the world? My, how times have changed …

- I’m sure there’s more to say but I need to spend some money on Xmas gifts … you want to check out some great Valencia gifts? Take a look at this gallery of old Valencia kits, this site where you can buy game-worn shirts and these awesome retro jerseys …

I’ll forward my address to anyone that wants to buy me these!! (just kidding … maybe …)

    @ Ali
ill join your luck mate, i got 6 midterms in 2 weeks, so my holidays consist of: study, study, get totally wasted on christmas, study, study, rock zurich on NYE, study study and study. So ill ask Santa for easy exams instead of jersey’s ;)

    @ Quin
hahah i was thinking the exact same thing, my god the Senyera is a beautiful flag (hanging on my wall) but ugly as hell on a football jersey!!

    @ Ahmed
Please leave Adriano as far away as possible, since the parties more than he plays, but most of all cause of this:

My most hated valencia jersey must be the 01/02 with the metrored sponser.
Lint sticks so bad onto the black area that its so hard to get it off all the time that it becomes an area of fur after each wash.
My favs would be the 02/03 and the 06/07 jerseys. They were the most comfortable ones. I wish i can buy them again with aimar on the 02/03 and villa on 06/07.
Heck, the only jersey i missed out was the 07/08. Refused to buy that under koeman’s reign. Maybe i should get it now with koeman’s name on the back for old time sake.

So guys, which are your favourite jerseys?

    @ Fayez,
Palmeiras :S ??? Half of Europe is after this dude, they want tons of money for him and he signs for Palmeiras?? I don’t get that move… And if they could get him, why didn’t we?? Pff…

    @ DJ
check my facebook than mate, sure there will be some photos on than! What do you and everybody have planned for NYE btw???

    @ Ali
good job man!!! :D And thanks :) ! As for Guiza, never liked him, but he sure scores goals. Thing is he has such a sad face all the time, maybe the defenders pity him or something. I do…

Most beautiful kit ever i think are a few, this year’s good, 2006 was great, but the blue away shirt with Terra Mitica in 2001 i always wanted to have but couldn’t find it anymore… But it looks great, also the home shirt. But about this year’s and 2006, i really like the style plus the away kids in black / orange just look dangerous! If i’d start a new team for sure the colors would be black / orange; stylish and intimidating!

@ Johnnie: Yeah tell me about it bro, I was as shocked as you are! I mean how can Kerrison agree to a move to Palmerias??? Im pretty sure it has something to do with the company that owns 80% of his contract….anyway I highly doubt we would get him even in the summer now.

Have a good time man, know where you are coming from cause Zürich is posh but i’m not a rich dude either, not at my place in between the richest but certainly enjoying life next to them :D

    @ fayez
yeah mate unbelievable we didnt get him, this was the perfect chance for us to get him but i guess our financial means do not let us… Tough luck, but for now we have to do with it, but for sure this is one player we can forget about…

    @ DJ
already added you :) Hope you have a good time in LA than man, you gotta go there for sure!! I would :)

    @ kooshin
Seems he is 25 and playing for Castellon in Segunda all his life. According to Goal.com he is one of the best in La Segunda, but is he good enough? Cant be worse than Helguera :)

    @ fayez
indeed, we wont get him in the summer either. Bad move from us, we had a perfect chance of getting him, but i guess its our bad luck now with our bad financials…

    @ DJ
already added you :) Go party in LA than man, i would if i were you! Well what ever you do, enjoy it!!! Im now home in the Netherlands enjoying a JW Black with my father and brother, good to be with family again. Hope you all spend your days with them as well, treasure those who care for you my fellow Valencianistas!

    @ kooshin
Seems he is 25 and plays in la Segunda, but is he good enough for us? According to Goal.com, its almost official and he is regarded as one of the best in that Liga, and we snatch him up before other Liga clubs do, so who knows what we can expect. Better than Helguera isnt that difficult tho :)
