Pft.. Barca.

By: Javier | October 21st, 2009

valSo now that I have sobered up from the drunken stupor after the Valencia Barca match I can look at things a little more subjectively before our next encounter.

But first a recap of our adventure with the best team in the world.

In case you missed it.

Which if you did..

shame on you.

Now i did predict that we would draw this match with Barcelona comming back 1-1. The score was wrong the result was right.

Barcelona was very lucky to come away with a point. At first i felt it was a fair result due to the fact that in the second half Barca did have some chances. But I’ve watched the game 4 times now and the more i watch it the more i realize Valencia dominated the first half completely, and it was about 50/50 in the second have with some clear goal scoring chances being tosses to the bin.

Its a pity. But regardless still a great result.

Now that Valencia have proven that they can play top level football. Lets keep this going.

val2If you look at the top teams. Madrid , Barcelona, Sevilla and Valencia and calculate who they have played so far, one thing becomes clear.

Valencia have had a far tougher group of teams to play so far than the others.

Madrid has had a fairly easy go with only Sevilla being their top test.

A test they failed.

Barcelona’s top challenge so far has been Valencia.

They tied.

Sevilla has beaten Madrid but lost to Valencia. so 50/50

So far if you look at the top team records Valencia has performed very well so far.

We only have 1 loss. Thats not too bad. We have been drawing alot of games which means lost points but we have not been losing.

Considering the fact that for the first 5 matches we bled 9 goals against us. Thats impressive.

A few things have me convinced we have what it takes.

goalFIRST: Our goal is now in order.

Cesar may be 108 years old and fought in both world wars. But he is also and outstanding keeper. We replace Moya and suddenly the sheets are clean. 2 games in a row with no goals on Valencia.
To me thats amazing. Cesar has made some great saves but thats not the end of that tale because alot of that credit belongs to our second point.

The Defence is clicking.

Miguel has found a new lease on life. In the Barca match he was a demon. Nothing passed him. He robbed the ball at will and scuttled Barcelona on the right. Essencially forcing Barca to try the left. No worries. Matthieu has found his focus. Matthieu was brilliant. He could not be passed .. and would break out and get the ball forward. Who is this guy. Wow. Just brilliant. I cant wait to see when he is 100% in the zone.. its clear his speed and talent are going to go a long way if this keeps up.
Dealbert and David. The center is solid and there is no opening. Thanks for calling.

Anybody miss Alex. I dont.

One more point before we leave the kudos behind..

Albelda. Welcome back. We missed you capitan.

Albelda during the Barca match looked like Julius Cesar crossing the Rubicon. He led the Che relentlessly advancing and controlling the midfield.

Xavi, Iniesta ? Nobodies. If it wasnt for Yaya Barca’s midfield would have been non existant.

albeldaAlbelda has shown he still has the flair and ability. After the match he was even emotional about the cheers for him coming from the stands. See Albelda. Valencia fans are not so hard to please. Just be amazing. It was nice to see alot of his blackened history wash away with this performance. And i hope its the start of a epic comeback on his part. Because he really is a great player. We could use some great leadership again.

Before i forget. Kudos to Unai Emery.

Our coach orchestrated a magnificent spectacle against the best team in the world.
He got them to tremble, shake sweat and a whole lot of other things that are unpleasant.

knock knock.. Who’s there? Fucking Valencia that’s who !

So who wants to come over and play with los Murcielagos now ?

SK Slavia Praha … bottom of our group. Not a point to their name so far in this Europa season.

Should we be worried?

Well Yes and No.

Yes we should be worried. Why. Because we are Valencia. We all know how great Valencia play against teams that appear to not be very good.
Barcelona Milan Arsenal.. no problem. Getafe… boom down 3 goals. WTF

No we should not be worried. The team that played Getafe is not this team. They do not have this mentality. And On top of all that these boys are pumped. At home and eager for blood. For the first time in a while Valencia seem hungry and want to use their new found form to tear a team apart.

Los Che did not resist Barcelona.

They went for the throat.

Prepare yourselves Slavia

Thursday you will need to be cleaned up off our new green Mestalla grass!

AMUNT VALENCIA!

valencias biggest problem during last 8-9 seasons? signing the right players. with so much money spent we only can see miguel, rufete, banega, mata, villa who have add something to the club. albiol, silva, hernandez own products. then some strange big money signings: ballesta, zigic, corradi, arizmendi, viana, fiore, caneire, moretti. who signed those guys? ranieri had a big say but the list goes beyound him with heguera, dos santos etc….

Kyle, yes, we can’t win every match. Yes, shit happens and yes, we shouldn’t over react. But I’d be pretty upset if we don’t win tomorrow. We need a top 4 finish and we can’t let the other teams pull away.

Barca did have a poor start last season, but they did not go on to win the title by thinking they shouldn’t be upset with a draw every time a slightly difficult match came round. They won pretty much everything else from there on. We have some really goo teams in La Liga, who may not drop too many points. To keep pace with them, we shouldn’t be dropping too many points either and that means winning most games. We are at 6 right now with a host of teams breathing down our necks. And that is not counting Atletico and Villareal who may wake up any day and decide they want their share of glory too.

Almeria away is difficult and we can’t win everything. But we’ve paid our dues by dropping points in 4 out of 7 matches already. Now we need a string of wins to have a hope of getting that top 4 finish.

Lillo, SAF gets good results with his team. So he must be good. He also gets a lot of help from officials. He may see fouls his players commit, but claims there was no foul when the rest of the world clearly saw it, which is very arrogant IMO. He insists that anybody who says something about him is talking nonsense and then goes on to rant against anybody and everybody.

Clearly, being successful doesn’t let you get away with ranting against referees as he recently found out.

Nithin, its one thing to play mind games with other managers and quite another to rant at officials who have the power to make life difficult for him. He sometimes gets away with it, sometimes he doesnt. But when it comes to other managers, he generally gets the better of the situation (probably through experience, doing it every season). And whoa, I didnt say Sir Alex isnt good… He’s amazing and the day he retires from Old Trafford our team is going to look a lot more human. Most likely a couple of years without winning anything… It’ll be a very sad day. But what I did say is that he’s so good at certain things, that he doesnt need to be the very top level of tactical managers to generate success. He’s so good at motivating his players and instilling a winning mentality that only rarely is his slight tactical weakness shown up. But every now and then he does come unstuck against sides with great tactics. Its not that he’s no good with tactics, he’s just not as great as some of the other parts of being a manager. And yes, I’d admit that Benitez is better with tactics than Sir Alex. Just nothing else :P

I wasn’t making a point about him being good. It was more of ‘I admit he must be good, but …’.

Also, the media makes too much out of the so called ‘mind games’. SAF gets good results, mind games or not. I don’t think his rants have anything to do with the results he gets. Its just that once he wins, the media makes it look like it was all due to his brilliant mind games. We know the English media.

Well let’s hope we win the match against Almeria today…it would be a tough one as Almeria have been really good at home this season. I dont think they’re scoring enough goals but they’ve got a mean defense lately.

Sevilla, Mallorca and Real have dropped points so winning will just bring us a bit closer to the top.

According to superdeporte.es, we seem to be interested in Vicente Iborra, a 21 year old midfielder/striker playing in Levante. His stats seem relatively average (if he’s used as a striker) but I think we are trying to get him for free. Maybe for the B team?

And what happened to that Danish striker we got from Spurs?

I did not see a lot of the game. But, it seems that Liverpool managed to defend decently agaisnt Manchester United particularly at the end, although they were playing awfully. Offensively, Manchester were the better team, but they let some errors which cost them the match I presume. I am referring to the second goal in particular. The counter was perfectly executed by Liverpool players. (Ngog and I think Kuyt) I wonder why there were only one central defender at the back given the fact that Vidic was missing. Manchester United should have played more safely. But, no, they still charged.

I believe, in their defense, that they were trying to take advantage of the situation. They had lost one of their central defender and, similarly, Liverpool lost stupidly their defensive midfielder Mascherano (What was he thinking when he tackled Van der Saar?) . So, since they were even “defensively”, they probably thought it was sufficient to give them a new tempo and continue to attack.

Anyway, the game was mostly boring, then all the action began at the 67th minute. From that point on, you could see the intensity grows up. Players were committing more faults. Some were obvious and others were more anonymous.

It was indeed a boring match. Credit to Benitez for once again pulling out a result when he’s under pressure, but last season having beat us they lost the next match. So that wont be a surprise if it happens again.
The truth is we always miss Darren Fletcher against good sides. He’s our best central midfielder, with Giggs playing left wing at the moment. And I dont have the stats to hand, but there’s some ridiculous stat to backup how important Fletcher is to us. Something like, we’ve lost 1 time in the past 45 matches he started. Something like that – I’m sure I’ll find it again now that there will be lots of discussion as to why we lost. The major concern for us, United, is that Berbatov and Rooney are quality individual players, but an extremely mediocre partnership up front. Berbatov needs a number 9, its as simple as that. Rooney isnt it. And Rooney needs… Well anyone other than Berbatov. Someone who is going to score at least as many goals as Rooney himself and play on the shoulder of the defender. That couldnt be further from Berbatov.
This is what I’m saying about Sir Alex and tactics. Sometimes he just gets things wrong and he’s too stubborn to admit that and change it. Signing Berbatov was wrong. We needed a goalscorer, a number 9. But he continues to have faith in a combination that hasnt been very fruitful for a season and a third. And that will cost us. Without Ronaldo we now look a lot more ordinary against a good side and we cant afford passangers or luxury players and when playing next to Rooney, thats what Berbatov has been.

Once Liverpool scored, they were content to sit back and attack on the counter. Towards the end, ManU were obviously desperate to get the equalizer and were pushing everybody forward. Thats why there was only one central defender back. Anyway, Liverpool had pretty much won it by then. Also, while Mascherano had no chance of getting the ball in that tackle, his tackle had died down to a harmless slide by the time it reached Van Der Sar and he made the most of it with a theatric dive.

Meanwhile, Valladolid lead against Depor. Can they do us a favor? And interestingly, Villareal lead against Malaga. Can they get their first win?

What was going on during the last 20 minutes of Liverpool v. Manchester United? Both teams were in a frenzy, no formations, little passing, lots of fouls. Liverpool were defending deep.

Nithin, you dont slide in on the keeper when the ball had gone and you were never going to get it, when you already have a booking. He was asking for trouble. Just like Vidic was. You dont pull a player down when you’ve been booked. Just two stupid decisions.

Lillo, I don’t dispute the card. It was stupid, he was never going to get the ball and I don’t think the referee really had any other option. I was just pointing out that it wasn’t nearly as bad as the keeper made it out to be.

Jiwonsi, Depor did beat a high flying Sevilla right after they had taken RM to the cleaners. So you never know.
