On Towards the Season …

By: Cesar | August 6th, 2008

Being a Valencia fan isn’t easy.

We’ve all known that for some time now, since the good ol’ days when QQ Sanchez Flores and Amedeo Carboni feuded over everything from transfers to who’d sit next to Juan Soler at official dinners.

But those days of yore seem far away, what with the comings and goings at the club this past year.

One person who isn’t leaving after being fired last season is former captain David Albelda.
You have to feel for the guy, whatever your feelings about his play and demeanor are.

“These months have been hard for me and I just want others to talk about me in terms of my work. I’m a Valencia CF player and all I need is peace and absolute normality to train properly. My intention is concentrating on the game and giving my best performances.

“There’s a refreshing, positive wind of change as new people have joined. If things go smoothly I think we can struggle to a title - we have sought-after players and a good team.”

Optimistic, isn’t he?

He’s right about one thing: we have sought after players.

We all know who these guys are …

Concerning David Silva, is he staying or is he leaving? Seems talks have been under way between his agent and the Valencia board to up his salary. In typical fashion, they want to make this episode as dramatic as possible, so they’ll meet again in the week to shore up an agreement. We think. Silva wants to stay. But the way this is going, who knows?

If they don’t raise his salary, Silva may be off to Barcelona, Real Madrid, Roma, Inter Milan, Chelsea, Manchester United, the New York Jets, the New York Yankees, etc etc etc … you get the idea.

One way or the other, this may have a conclusion in the next few days.

Speaking of upping someone’s salary, step over king Joaquin wants more money. But the board’s said no. No way, Joaquin. But they want him to stay.

Will Valencia pony up? Time will tell.

David Villa? My heart tells me he isn’t going anywhere, no matter what the football press wants us to believe.

Another guy that wants to stay … well, come … is Mallorca goalkeeper Miguel Angel Moyá, who has told his club he wants to play for Los Che now now now.

Moya’s throwing a fit, sitting down, banging his feet and fists against the floor in a rage until he gets his way. Good lad.

Apparently the 24-year-old has argued that his loyalty over the years means he deserves the chance for a shot at the big time with one of Spain’s larger clubs.

Valencia. Big club. Thanks.

Add a name to the depressing list of players we won’t be getting this summer: Manchester United striker Louis Saha. Apparently, we’re interested.

Ever Banega. Remember him? Me neither.
He’s off, or so we think, with a possible move to Atletico Madrid in the works. I think this is a major mistake, as I believe the lad has some great football in him. But what do I know, right?

Rafael Van Der Vaart. Remember him? The guy that wanted to come to Valencia so badly but is off to Real Madrid instead? He talked about us during his presentation at the Bernabeu yesterday, saying, ‘Last year, things were different. Valencia wanted me and they’re a fantastic club. But this year Madrid were interested. I’m happy to be at this club, which is the best in the world.’

Uggh …

Arizmendi. Remember him? He of the wonder goal against Van Der Vaart’s Madrid last season? He might be off. Am I the only one who could care less?

This Saturday, it’s pre-season action in preparation for next weekend’s Super Copa against the aforementioned Madrid when we travel to St. James Park to play Newcastle United.

I expect coach Unai Emery to incorporate the European champions into the game more, as only Albiol played in last week’s game against Borussia Monchengladbach.

I also expect Emery to continue to press the club to play better defense, as that’s been their downfall. Should be a fun one either way.

Any of you going to Newcastle? Please send pics!

FC Barcelona’s here in New York for a friendly against the New York Red Bulls tonight. Part of me wants to go to support American soccer. Another part of me could care less. There’s no love lost between me and Barca. I just don’t like them. But you can’t deny they’d be fun to watch, what with future Valencia star Samuel Eto’o on the team.

What do you think? Should I make my way there or sit at home watching Seinfeld re-runs?

Sell Arizmendi.. we dont need him arizmending things up. I was far from impressed by this guy. At the same time why are we still holding on to Vicente.. his name never comes up for trade but seriously has this guy even played a dozen games in 3 seasons. he is made of glass.

Maduro is the best defensive midfielder at Valencia (he’s young strong and good positional sense and can even pass the ball)and probably will be the starting defensive midfielder this season and Baraja is getting towards the end of his carrier, Banega is a natural cheap replacement for him, last season the defending was so poor Valencia needed as many defensive players as possible on the field so he didn’t play much but when he played he showed good passing skills and that it was hard to knock him off the ball.

on superdepotre it says that a 12 million euros dael to transfer Zigic to Stoke is practically completed and Valencia are now moving to sign Renan… (apparently Timo has been told that even with a new goal keeper he will be still seen as number 1 but he if he does not do better than the no.2 he will loose his spot.)Renan Brito is currently Brazil’s goalkeeper at the Olympics if you watch Brazil’s games you will see him in action, there is a whole series of Renan videos on youtube so you can watch some of his save there, My opinion of him is that He is still green, hes only 22, he is short for a goalkeeper but makes up for it with quick reflexes most of the saves i have seen him make are reflex saves.

Well i personally dont care much about the friendlys, both halves are with different teams etc. we got some players that came back later from the euros or are off to the olympics. So that isnt all that serious yet.

Valencia played extremely well against Newcastle and only lost because the coach was looking to evaluate most of the players so the majority of starters were subbed off. Because of that Valencia lost its creativity and the coach found out that Navarro and Alexis are not compatible at center back… but by far this was the first game where you saw Emery’s philosophy in practice and if the first half is anything to judge from, Valencia are looking at a top four finish next season.

Press is at it again.. Seems like Silva is destined for Barcelona/Man Utd/Liverpool/Real Madrid. David Villa is also about to be shipped to Real Madrid for 50 mil euros. Great. 50 mil euros is a lot of money though, not that it’ll do us any good unless we bring in a good striker for about 20 mil euros

lol Daniel that sounds like Goal.com type journalism… don’t put much faith in any of those reports to be true or lead to the sale of a Valencia player. the last statement from an Emery interview i saw on superdeporte Emery said that Both Daivds are important players for the team and that to his knowledge they both will stay… i’d rather trust that than any journalism that has appeared on Goal.com or any other sites that share their brand of journalism.

i really want this season to begin.. and really want Banega and Maduro to stay.. because our midfield is old.. Baraja, EdU,Albelda.. are all above 30.. so they won’t give more than 2 year maximum… and we got good players..

we’re the best team at Loaning players.. the best ever!

Ali, Banega has class but if he wants to go, let him. Arizmendi has never impressed me. He is an extremely hard worker but runs around in circles. If he stays fine, if he leaves fine.

when has Banega ever said he wants to leave Valencia? Emery said that because Banega and Maduro are at the Olympics it is unfortunate because he isn’t getting a chance to evaluate them.some how Goal.com and similar sites interpreted that to mean that Emery does not want Banega at Valencia.

that’s what we get to understand from emery’s saying he wants a 22 players squad… players that he tested on the preseason.. and Maduro and Banega don’t fit on that term… hope they get the chance to play anywas at the olympics.. COME ON GAGO.. get an injury !!

Oh I’d much prefer Arizmendi leave and Angulo stay. Angulo bleeds orange, he loves this club more than any other player in our squad IMO. Searching EBAY right now for this season’s new kit, but I can only find ones with no names and numbers. Of course for all the other “big” clubs you can find jerseys for all their big players.

Arizmendi has hopped from club to club because more than one sporting director expected him to blossom in the end they give up and transfer him. Valencia will simply be the most recent. on the other hand supposed Loyalty aside Angulo is old and well past his prime… neither player will be expected to do big things at Valencia this season. Pablo and Mata will keep Arezmendi and or Angulo’s minutes to a minimum. And as long as Valencia dont give Banega and Maduro you are free to leave notices like they gave Viana i expect them to be important parts of the team, as crazy as the directors of Valencia are they are not crazy enough to sell two under 23 internationals in favor of keeping players that are thirty and above. (Baraja 33, Edu 30, Albelda 30) Emery will probably evaluate Banega and Maduro when they return from the Olympics.

angulo is the bane of my existence. i know that cesar and others might look down upon this statement and disagree, and i know that he loves the club, but he simply sucks. i’m sorry. arizmendi does too - but he has shown some potential. his miracle goal against the merengues is one such instance. and he’s young. so if forced to choose, i’d have to go arizmendi over angulo. but simply put, they’re both lacking in talent. for the love of god, keep silva and banega.

timothy…u wrote my mind down:) i never liked arizmendi but i think he would be better than arizmendi, hes fast, young and tall, and as for loyality! im sure angulo is more loyal than arizmendi but loyality doesnt score goals! im sure arizmendi doesn’t also but he runs like hell!!!! Keep SILVA & BANEGA!!!

Anybody see Marca’s run down of Villalonga’s amazing plans had he been in charge? He wanted to bring Ronaldinho, Van der Vaart, Guiza and Aragones as coach in addition to keeping Villa and Silva. I’m no fan of Aragones at all, but the other players would be great additions to any team. Let’s see Soriano’s great plans.

how would Valencia have afforded their salaries? or even their transfer fee’s. plans like that are what lead Valencia’s three main shareholders to fire him and say that Valencia has no need for a magician.
