OK, Now What?

By: Cesar | October 1st, 2007

villa300907_es.jpgWe won again this weekend.

1-0 away to Recreativo Huelva, a 5th minute tally from El Guaje David Villa sealing the victory before Recre had a chance to breathe.
That makes it five in a row in the league, seven in a row in all competitions, moving us up the Spanish league table to joint 2nd (with Villarreal), one point behind Real Madrid with 15 points.

But we didn’t play well. The game looked slow, we looked ragged and while we rested players for the Chelsea match this Wednesday, we looked out of sorts.

The popular fan site Foroche.com asks the question: ‘Five in a row is great. But does the poor play justify the results?’

I know, I know. Here I go again.

I’ll keep it to a minimum, as I don’t want my rant-filled posts to scare off faithful readers. We all love Valencia. I think we can agree on that. They just make it difficult these days to have much faith in them, five wins in a row or not.

Villa scored again. That’s always nice. He latched onto a sweet pass from Carlos Marchena, broke free of the defense and sent the finish past Recre keeper Sorrentino. What an absolute talent this kid is. Pound-for-pound the best Spanish striker out there, better than Liverpool striker Fernando Torres.

Our boys continued to dominate the first half, Silva forcing a wonderful save and Angulo hitting the post. But they looked out of it.

The second half saw fortunes change, with Recre taking the game to us. Luckily, our heroes still controlled the game, playing at our slow pace and managed to squeak out the win, despite Recre’s bevy of chances.

Controversey at the end, as Recre had a penalty claim denied when a ball brushed defender Moretti’s hand in the penalty area. The crowd howled at the referee as he denied the penalty and sent off Recre player Carlos Martins for his protests. Whatever …

We won and that’s all that counts.

So Quique, what do you think about the game?

“We played in a serious manner at a difficult venue against a strong team,” he explained.

“Fortunately, we scored early on and that boosted our confidence for the match on Wednesday when we play in Europe against Chelsea.

“We controlled the game and out goalkeeper hardly had anything to do and apart from the last ten minutes was never really in any danger.

“I thought we played well and worked hard against a side that battles for everything.

“It was an tough game with plenty of tackles and challenges and I think the referee should be commended as it was difficult for him.”

Fair enough.

Now it’s on to Europe. Champions League. The always-tough Chelsea. Regardless of what anyone says, this side is loaded with talent, Special One or not.

One good note is the probable absence of Chelsea captain John Terry, who broke his cheekbone this weekend.

On our side, Canizares is still injured and Manuel Fernandes may not feature.

On we go. I’m excited for the game this week and look forward to actually WATCHING the game (can it be?? I’m going to watch the game??).

Manuel Fernandes is injured.?? Hes not gonna play v. Chelsea on Wed.? I really hope he plays to show his brilliance on that bad Chelsea side. What was the Valencia lineup for the Recre game?

What I know is, the team might not look as good, but Real only got a 2-1 win on Wed vs.Getafe and didnt look impressive at all, and without Sneidjer. The same team we beat 2-1 last weekend.
My point is, going in with a less that stellar side and getting points is all that matters. A win is 3pts no matter how pretty you play. Just glad they are beating these bottom dwellers and not giving away points like last year. I dont care how they look as long as they get the results.
And Cesar, since when does Valencia have to start playing beautiful? Your looking in the short term. Long term, Valencia needs to look back on Sept and say, ‘We got the pts. we needed to be competing in May and June for the league title. Since we don’t have a Vicente to play beautiful we else can we do but just get pts. no matter how ugly? (I’m not being sarcastic!)
With Vicente on the field, when he returns to being, Valencia will have more technical ability to dominate the way you always expect them to. But until that time, right now, JUST FIND A WAY TO WIN. KEEP THE HOPES OF A LEAGUE TITLE ALIVE BY BEATING THE TEAMS YOU SHOULD BEAT. So when June comes along and Valencia has already won the Champions League, and were all wanting to give Quique the title of THE SPECIAL ONE, and not leave for big bucks to ENGLAND, we will be pressing on top run away with the League title and doing a DOUBLE. WHO knows maybe even a triple with the KINGS CUP. I mean, we are in the right direction right now, right?

    Well…….THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!
    finally a like-minded opinion!
i certainly dont wish to cause any offense by this, as being from the UK in no way qualifies anyone to know more then the next football fan. Yet i think we realise the importance of GRINDING out results. winning ugly. points win prizes. the beauty of lookin back on a near faultless start to the season, picking up points against teams we “should” be, shouldnt be a bad thing. In todays top European leagues there really aren’t any guarentees anymore. guys, i appreciate and understand the concerns raised but imagine if we were playing this bad AND losing ala Villareal? it could be so so much worse
    Peace

oh and P.S winning by luck?
come on now, maybe once or twice, but 7?????
that is a serious dis-credit to everyone outside of Barca-Real! we cant assume we are going to beat everyone but lo and behold come up against some REAL opponents and get beaten, have some faith
and ANY win in europe away is a serious result, undeserved or not

Ant & Franky, I understand what you say about losing ugly, etc. I remember the Benitez days, where winning was all that mattered, ugly or not. But there’s a real difference between those days and the games we’re now seeing. The Benitez team was prepared, played tactically beautiful football and didn’t back down from anyone. They won ugly but they were EFFICIENT. This team lacks that fire and spark.
They simply win UGLY. That won’t get it done these seasons against teams like Barca & Madrid.
Remember that game we played against Madrid a few years back at the Bernabeu, when Raul dived and cost us the 3 points at the end of the game? Back then, that was the only way a good team like Madrid could beat us: cheating.
Now, do you have that same confidence with this team? We’d be a tough out, on some days and not on others.
I understand what you mean. I just don’t see the same efficiency in QQ’s side. After three years, we deserve better. Because truly, we have a better team now than we did then …

This game vs Chelsea is going to be a dangerous one for Los Che, as Chelsea is still a strong club with a load of talent regardless of whos coaching. They are a hungry side chomping at the bits to produce a quality win. Our defense is going to have to step it up tenfold if we are to win on weds.
