Oh Valencia!
By: Cesar | January 15th, 2009Yesterday’s 3-1 Copa Del Rey victory was one of those feel-good wins, a victory against an opponent (Racing Santander) who’s given us fits for seasons now (we hadn’t beaten them in 4 years) and who looked very good against us not only in the Cup but in the league (they beat us at the Mestalla 4-2 earlier this year).
Vicente’s spot-on kick and the virtuoso performances of Joaquin and David Villa propelled us to a joyous 3-1 victory and a place in the Copa quarterfinals, where we’ll defend our title against the tough Sevilla FC.
Here, some highlights of the game …
Vicente gave Our Beloved the lead from the spot only for Santander’s Colsa to draw the visitors level three minutes later with a spectacular bicycle kick. (Que golazo, no?)
The game went into extra time where Racing shot themselves in the foot, a sloppy backpass fell to Vicente who ran through to net his second of the match. With Racing throwing caution to the wind, Joaquin wrapped up the win finishing off a lightening counter, a stupendous pass from Villa finishing the game off.
That’s how to do it … that felt great.
3 quick points:

1 – Vicente looked like the player he used to be. His magical touches, sneaky moves and graceful finishes made me yearn for the days he was a young lad from Levante who displaced Kily Gonzalez and gave new meaning to the ‘local boy does good’ story line.
Injuries have devastated El puñal de Benicalap (The dagger of Benicalap) and although he’s only 27, he’s closer to 50 in dog years. Still, how wonderful was it to see him out there last night playing like the Vicente we know and love? There’s a grace about the way he plays that’s rare in football these days … the game comes so easily to guys like Vicente.

He could have been one of the best ever … I say that in all sincerity. It’s a shame what injuries can do to someone …
I cross my fingers and hope he stays healthy. His presence would be such a morale booster for the club …
2 – The David Villa debate from the comments section of yesterday’s post …
We all agree Villa is one of the top players in world football. But in my opinion, he’s going to have his ups and downs. He played last night in a match he probably should have never set foot in.
Football these days is a never-ending stream of fixtures, from friendlies to internationals, from Copa Del Rey games to league match-ups to Champions League and UEFA Cup wars … it never stops …
These guys aren’t machines. They can’t be expected to be on point for every match and every game. We’d LIKE them to be. We’d like to think Villa, Silva, etc. were as excited about these matches as we are. While I’m not in their heads, I’d expect they aren’t all that thrilled to be playing 2 games every week, on top of their international duties and practice.
Not that I’m making excuses. These guys live wonderful lives and get paid to play a boy’s game – and well, mind you. It’s just that I view the season as a grind, a chore that needs to get done and done well.
Game by game, competition by competition. Until at the end, you rejoice. A cup, a championship, some sort of reward for the hard work of the season.
Villa missed a sitter last night. Villa plays better with a support striker. All true. But did you see that pass he sent to Joaquin for the third goal?
The guy’s a worker bee. He’s all over the field.
Here’s a good barometer for how much Villa helps us when he’s on the field, whether he’s having a bad game or not: How good do Valencia look when he’s NOT on the field?
Did you see how baseless our striker was last night? Fernando Morientes has obviously seen better days, but the fact is that the defenders can hone in on the wingers, the midfielders and effectively shut down someone like El Moro – and by extension, the entire team. You cut the team off at the base when you know the head can’t do anything and that’s the end of that …
With Villa on the field, it’s not as easy to do that. Defenders need to concentrate on El Guaje more, giving more space to midfielders and wingers who consequently have more time on the ball.
Villa’s double and triple-teamed and still manages to score goals almost every week.
The guy’s an extremely wicked talent.
Excuse me for stealing, but I thought this comment from Ari Haniman from yesterday’s comments section sums it all up:
Talking about David Villa, based on what I’ve been observing, I mention some Villa’s characters on the pitch:
1. He runs very quick (one of the quickest I think in La Liga)
2. He plays as a central-forward, but sometimes moves to channels (especially left flank)
3. He has a great penalty taking ability (missed only less than 10%)
4. He is good at free-kick (has scored some pretty goals from free-kick, remember Inter (San Siro) goal, and freekicks against Betis last season or Osasuna 2 seasons ago)
5. He often rushes forward in tremendous pace, looking for space in order to receive through balls from midfield (this makes him often get offside).
6. He is not good at high balls (so, he should not be supplied with long and high pass).
7. He is very tricky. He often uses new and unpredictable technique on the pitch (remember how Dani Alves 2007 was shamed by Villa’s backheel technique). And he can score with both his feet.
8. He is a creative player (not only sitting forward, but moving everywhere, sometimes moves back to his own penalty area during an opponent corner, ready to launch a fast-break). Sometimes he tries long-shots if he sees no space for through balls, but I think he can still improve his long-shots accuracy.
9. He has a pretty good teamwork. He is good at one-two, especially with David Silva. He sometimes executes a very good through balls to his teammates, although some other time, he is quite selfish.
10. He is a very lethal striker. Goal per game and goal per shots ratio is very good. It’s difficult to find a better-overall statistic striker than him in Europe. His finishing is very deadly, and usually tends to hit a placed shot rather than a powerful shot.
11. He is a tireless player. He usually has a constant stamina throughout 90 minutes. And a good point is he is seldom getting injured, with the exception of Euro final. This season, he’s not been injured at all. He is reliable to run right from the first until the last gameweek of the season.
12. He is strong mentally (cool head from penalty spot, he can score the breakthrough in the last minutes as well).
No one’s saying Villa sucks. That’s not what I’m implying. But what I am saying is that he’s got to be tired! Let’s cut the man some slack and enjoy his wonderful ability!
3 – I didn’t think Michel was as bad as some did. The lad’s young. He hasn’t played top-notch football for Valencia for very long. What? 2 games? Let’s cut him some slack too!
I think he could have a bright future with the club. He’s speedy, quick and has decent instincts. He simply needs to play more …
4 – I said three but here’s #4. Renan looked pretty good yesterday, no? We might have ourselves a goal keeper, people!
Finally, here’s an article from Soccerlens.com, one of the most respected sites in world football writing about Our Beloved … we’ve heard it all before, but here’s a different perspective … what do you think?

ali,if we sell villa maravilla i doubt we would spend anything on replacing him.
now tevez v merchena is something i would like to see, might sit next to the pitch for that one.are barca after him? im suprised.
jw i read somewhere that stella and the french version 1664 is actually filled with chemicals to give you a headache so you think you have had a good time……the beauty of stella is that it can make a woman with a beer gut and a beard seem gorgeous. ESB by fullers ( uk ) is worth a shot, its the dogs huevos

Carlsberg… I’, actually drinking one rigth now! A cough*joint*cough and a beer to watch some footy. Who wants to join!?
It’s too bad we have NO money to spend… there would be a few (relatively) cheap moves we could make that would help us secure top 4. Oh well!
Hasta la próxima! AMUNT!Posted from

@ bob
correct me if i’m wroing, but 1664 is from Strasbourg / from Kronenbourg, its not Stella… I like that brand but the beer is not especially good, could imagine they put chemicals in it btw and i know exactly what you mean with ugly birds turning into Cinderella’s after enough beer haha (damn it, again!!! is one of my most used lines on saturday morning…). As for Heineken, the Dutch always say it gives u headaches while drinking, but i never notice that after a few glasses
Dommelsch from NL is also good btw, plus i found out some Swiss beers aren’t too bad@ Xes
mate u are doing a great job, if i were in Spain i’d join(t) you
! Cheers, hope you can enjoy the Heineken and Carlsberg during a good Barca-loss tonight!!!So who of you guys thinks we can beat Bilbao tomorrow??? They are currently 11th and have played some seriously good matches. Last year we lost 5-1 under some unknown dutch trainee, so we need to get some payback but it will be a tough match. I’d love to see Valencia go all out playing like they’re at home, but caution is not unadvized…

Haha…Man if someone stubbled on the blog for the first time and saw the last few posts he’d think all Valencia fans are a bunch of drunk party animals
@ Xes : Yeah I think the only way around our cash problem is to try and get players that are about to end their contracts with their clubs. Sometimes we can get good deals like that, plus they would be free and we would only have to pay their wages.

@ Shaun
Mate i cant get it into the Headline thing, im trying out some stuff but i dont seem to be able to put new posts really as new post haha… Btw mate, the design im not too sure about it, we should just keep it simple and stylish, the font doesnt look smooth you know, the interaction doesnt really fit… Lets check out what we can still improve, doesnt have to be much you know.. Hope u dont mind me saying this

@johnnie, i love the dutch for a multitude of reasons: most of the Dutch people I’ve met, like yourself, are cool as hell and helpful; I love the country, particularly Amsterdam; and I love heineken, but also Grolsch, which is in my fridge right now and is also one of my favorite beers. I’m trying to research the best restaurants to go in Madrid in Valencia, so if you guys have more suggestions, let me know. Has anyone ventured outside the city to a paella place called L’Alter? It’s supposed to be a family run restaurant with the best authentic Valencian paella. I like us to get a tough 2-1 win tomorrow. I want revenge from that debacle last year. We have trouble with teams like Bilbao, but Emery will have us ready. It sucks that I have to work all day tomorrow, so I can’t check this blog for fear of learning the score, but I’ll have the match taped. AMUNT!

@Johnnie: You can be with me in spirit at least! Take the plane to Palma next weekend mate. Can’t be too expensive
I think we can pull it out tomorrow… can’t take anything for granted though. I’ve never understood why we don’t play with a little more of an attacking mentality sometimes… Anything to keep the ball away from our defense!Posted from

@Johnnie, the only Dutchie I don’t like is Ronald Koeman, but you’d agree with me on that. I think we should tell Balkenede -Harry Potter- to strip him of Dutch citizenship.

@ bob
Swiss beers are for example Feldschlosschen, Löwenbräu (both Zürich local), they’re not bad, should try them once. But 1664 is french mate, Strasbourg is in France since the germans lost the wars
hehe@ Fayez
and thats exactly what we are
@ Xes
next week ill fly home to get some well deserved rest! But i wont forget the offer, i might take it in the summer or so
@ Timothy
gracias hombre
Though i will never live in the Netherlands again, i am a proud Dutchman and it gives me joy to see others aprecciating my people
@ Shaun
I go it. But i got time today so i will design a simple forntpage (i’d probably be a better amateur porn-star than webdesigner but i can try
) and ill send it to you so u can check out what u think of it, and if it is easy to be made. Cool? Btw we are talking about the Armada Naranja, we’re trying to build a website again for our previous worldwide community to have a full international Valencia CF supporters site with daily news, Cesars blogposts and lots of things. Valencia fans don’t really have that, and so we must provide what is missing in our Orange world! Its at http://www.armadanaranja.com, still kinda under construction tho so mind any fouls / misplaced posts please
We’re working on it!Ats for tomorrow, i would love us to win but if we don’t take control in the first 10 minutes, i expect us to loose. It all depends on our mentallity like Xes said, we need a more attacking mentality like Barca has. We should enter every field thinking: we are gonna own this b***h. And than, play with heart, play our game and maybe end a game with a positive score and Marchena still on the field!

@ Timothy
not offending any christians here, but imo we could take JP “Harry Potter” Balkenende his citizenship as well, he and his reli-fascists are ruining the liberal society, slowly turning it into a 15th-century Holy Roman Empire christian dictatorship (slightly exaggerated

@Fayez: we are a bunch of drunks man!
@Timothy: The dutch are cool man, wish I knew more!
Barça should be up about 16-0 right now, but somehow it’s still 0-0

@ Xes

And since i broke up with her maybe it was better we didnt…@ Shaun

I have no idea how Sevilla are 2nd this year, they really dont deserve to be there. Am I the only one who is sick and tired of Diego Capel and him falling down 20 times per match?
Suprisingly even the Sevilla 2nd goalkeeper Javi (Vargas?) seems to be better than both our goalkeepers….

what the hell r u talking about? renan had shown a lot of developing since he came. he already made a lot of saves, although he still got a lot of things to learn about valencia, la liga, and europoean football. what i really love about him is his offensive play. he’s pretty good at throwing, and kicking the ball as the first step of our offense…
Posted from
Australia

@ jo hahn
are you kidding me man haha? Renan couldnt kick a ball even if he really wanted to man, look at how many times he fucks up the ball when the defenders give it back to him! And throw-ins, come on haha if a keeper cant throw a decent ball he should not be a keeper. He has shown some good improvement tho, hope he continues like this but come on these 2 things….Posted from

@Fayez: I agree mate, I don’t think Sevilla should be that high either… They lost a few too many good players to deserve the spot that they’re in. Oh well.
Anyway to all others; I honsetly think Renan is worth holding on to. I know a lot don’t agree with me, but I think he will grow up and could be one of the best. Personal opinion. AMUNT! and we’ll see each other tomorrow!
