Not Good. Not Good At All.
By: Cesar | September 23rd, 2009
I’ll be honest: I haven’t watched Valencia CF as much as I’d like to this season.
One thing or another in my ‘real’ life has kept me from Our Beloved.
So imagine my joy to notice my agenda open this afternoon and Valencia visiting Getafe?
My first full VCF match of the season. Bring it on.
Here’s what I think about this team (from my limited perch) 4 matches into the season: It’s the same old thing. A 3-1 loss to Getafe and I’m asking …
Has anything changed?
It boils down to this one word: defense.
Take away Dalport, Vicente Soriano and every other power hungry vulture surrounding our club and things still don’t change on the pitch.
Our defense sucks. Plain and simple, this team is dysfunctional.
The individual talents of Jeremy Mathieu, Alexis, Miguel, etc aren’t in question. They’re quality. But what is it about them playing together that doesn’t click? We could have Maicon in there and it wouldn’t matter.
With this defense, the offensive talents of David Villa, David Silva, Pablo Hernandez and Mata are simply wasted.
Time and again, players are out of position, or simply not able to catch up to Getafe’s quick attackers.
I’m watching this game, looking at the calendar, saying to myself, ‘Is it 2007? Is Koeman coach? What’s up here?’
I read that Villa had some harsh words for coach Unai Emery after this weekend’s dreadful 2-2 draw against Sporting Gijon, where it appeared that VCF was playing a ‘prevent defense’ against Sporting.
Can you blame him? We can’t attack with defenders like this.
Mind you, I haven’t seen VCF enough to formulate a proper opinion on the entire season’s body of work. But from what I saw today, it didn’t look good.
Some random thoughts on my first day back … (should I start another Streak?):
- Ever Banega has great touch on the ball. He’s a talent, pure and simple.
- Joaquin looked like a legitimate player today. He obviously wants to play on the 2010 World Cup team.
- Maduro. Does he do anything right?
- Miguel … he’s out of position almost every time the ball is in the offensive zone. I’d rather a 49-year old Franco Baresi than this fool.
- Marchena made a Marchena Face today. I missed him, yet booed when he was substituted.
So, my friends … I can’t say I’m happy about today’s result against Getafe.
That’s my knee-jerk, quick as balls reaction to today’s horrific display. It doesn’t look like much was done to improve the squad. Or maybe it was and I’m not aware, seeing as I’ve yet to watch VCF as much as I’d like to?
Piss poor. Today was not a good display.
Why do I feel I’ve seen this Valencia show before?

I thought Emery had left the decision to him, and said that if he wanted to stay, there was a place for him in the team.

if alonso went for 35 mil then to me banega is worth 70 mil better passer and some tricks as well. about bruno, i really think he would do better then alexis and navarro as centerback. miguel is better rightback then bruno and should be first pick ( as long as he doesnt mess around off the field)

not realy moe.bruno is good defensively.he was excellent in preseason and also most games he has played so far.and he can also send in productive balls inside penalty area.imagine miguel crossin or setting up goals.need i say more.

Actually, Bruno has been rather shaky in most games he’s played since the season started.

emery wanted emana.. fernando wanted de guzman.. both are good players but i still thank emery for saying 7.5m is too less for banega(way too less) and baraja’s injury which gave banega this really good opportunity to shine..

let me try to recollect roy hudson’s words after valencia’s second goal..
“Valenica’s second goal was a scientific goal.Pass after pass after pass. Beautiful one touch football. blah blah blah(mind you i dont remember he kept talking about it for 5 min).. If science was this good i would have payed more attention to it in school”Posted from

He definately added “bloody” in there somewhere. And he probably screamed like a girl. He does that a lot when Valencia, Barcelona or Atletico Madrid score.

@fayez
Navarro might have played him on but it was entirely Matthieu’s fault.
Matthieu should have at least put pressure on the striker and not raise his hand to call for an offside.
@Kyle
Well…Javier is always online.I just dont know why he hasnt been posting.
@kat
I always blieved in Banega,Im just happy he proved me right .

@ Kyle: Thanks for the download links! I saw the game yesterday, but with bad Russian Kommendar ….. and always in between has been shown in a different game …
Banega: Yes, Emery did not him want to back into the team. Only there was no corresponding Quote, too little money. already in 2008 he was commissioned to Madrid and with a clause for the purchase of (11 Mill). Unverstädnlich!
He has played well at the U-20 World Cup in 2007, he are also top games at the 2008 Olympics…. I saw him 2008 in Paterna during training and was excited …. Valencia has only looked away and not recognized what the boy can ………….
Well no one wanted him and is good now he is still with us ……;)
Match: First I must say, I was very disappointed by the Valencians …………The stadium was almost empty! This I felt as a depression ….. Here in Germany, this would not happen.
@ bob: you are in Valencia? Did you go to the game? Why so few viewers are there!?Banega and Silva were super in the game! Zigic was like a foreign body in the team, despite the Gol. Mattieu still bad, perhaps a great language problem.
Albelda, I was astonished …. he can still play. but well, that Emery has Banega can fully play.Genoa played worse than we and normal (maybe with villa from the beginning on) should be 5:1 at the game …

i have nothing against emery but we dont need his inexperience to cost us CL place.if it was hiddink or franck rijkard,we would be contending neck to neck with the top dogs.
aaron is going to top silva youth goal scoring record in just a cuople of games.yeaaaaaay.good for valencia.another winger.it realy sucks why we cant make a good defender or midfielder instead of wingers.

@ mohamed: I think you’re right. with Emery, we will not achieve the CL, he is too inexperienced (and stubborn, as Maradona = Skopion Horoscope) … …PS: @ Johnny Walker: You are very rare here?
@ Tristan: you will go to the games in Prague or Genoa?

one thing i liked about Emery in this game.. though we were winning 2-1 he was going for Villa and Joaquin to end the game. this is the correction of the error done against Gijon and Atletico.. i like.

Emery didnt exactly want Banega out but he didnt mind him leaving. So he let the player choose whether to stay or leave (although he seemed more keen to have Emana in the team). Fernando really wanted Banega to go so he could land de Guzman. If it werent for Banega refusing to leave, we’d have seen him in a Stuttgart or Fiorentina shirt right now.
I just think if Emery really wanted Banega to stay at the beginning of the season he would have made it clear that he wanted him just like he did with other players (for example Alba and the overrated Michel – who I personally think should be on loan at the moment). I wish I knew what people saw in Michel…

One thing im really worried about that Albelda mentioned after the match is that we are still conceding far too many goals when compared to the number of chances our opponents have.
The 2nd goal was a personal error on the part of Mathieu and we cant blame anyone else but him for that but the 1st goal that Genoa scored showed how badly our back line play together. Those tactics (playing the offside trap) should be something they practice in training and it is obvious that our players need to work more on these defensive tactics. It is something Emery has to work more on. He’s tried to improve our man to man marking and our attackers keep pressuring the opposition now (which is something they didnt do much before the Gijon match), but he also has to work on the tactics of our back four.

@Shaun – the other guy on the pitch beside César was one of the two new referees (one behind each goal). When I went to Lille-Valencia I was amazed to see that they actually step right inside the area (unlike linesmen, who cannot cross their line). But I must say, I don’t think the refereeing was bad yesterday, both were penalties I’m sure. So happy so far with the new change.
@Chris, yes, I’ll definitely be at the Prague game, will be staying four days there in all. Let me know if you need a hand getting tickets as I’m getting mine so I can get yours as well if you’re defintely going. Ralph from the German penya is also going (I think he’s driving from the Ruhr valley if you need a lift) and can also get you tickets. I am probably going to go to Genoa too, but it’s very close to Christmas so not 100% sure as I am going away for Christmas as well.
Very happy about last night. For me, man of the match was Dealbert (great defending, and not just that “save” when César fluffed it). Second Banega, on fire again. Third is a hard one, I would have said Matthieu who was faultless, but by trying to play the offside trap (incorrectly) he jeopardised the defense. So I will say Albelda, who played very well yesterday while he was on.

Just got done watching the game – had to tape cuz I was working. We played very well, creating a lot of space on a staunch Italian defense. Two stupid defensive mistakes, which we have to work on, but overall we responded well. I’m now pretty optimistic about Racing, even though they are our bogeyman along with Sporting.
