No Footie, No Cry

marca_060502.jpgI haven’t written in a while but can you blame me?
There’s not really much going on …

To list:

- We have a new coach. Amunt, Mr. Ronald Koeman. Bring us glory like Rafa Benitez did in 2002. Look to the left for memories of those glory years. (Sigh …)
- Edu is on his way back, a year after tearing up his knee yet again.
- Vicente suffered a knock in practice. So did Miguel while with Portugal for Euro 2008 qualifying. And Baraja too, who screamed, ‘Me cago en …, otra vez lo mismo’ which roughly translates to, ‘Oh sh*t, again the same thing’ after suffering a knock in his left leg. He could be out one month.
- Speaking of Euro 2008, Spain plays Sweden and Northern Ireland this week and Valencia makes up the bulk of the team. Our boys have 6 representatives on the team, with David Villa, Carlos Marchena, Raul Albiol, David Albelda, Joaquin, and David Silva flying the Valencia flag proud. I fully expect Valencia Lite (or Diet Valencia, as I like to call ‘em) to advance to Euro 2008. So I’m kind of yawning at this one a little. I’m making no effort to watch these games. I hope they do well and I’ll gladly Youtube the highlights later in the day.
- We’re after some defensive player during the winter transfer period. Yawn. I had my transfer fill during the summer. What’s the use? We’ll buy some guy and he won’t play anyways. I’ll believe it when I see it.

This is a funny period. It’s almost like I’m all footballed-out. Trust me, I love the game as much as anyone. Well, as much as any American can. But it’s football overload.

Champions League. Copa Del Rey. The league. Now Euro qualifiers. Turn your head and there’s South American World Cup qualifiers. And don’t forget the MLS Cup this weekend (Did I really just say that? MLS?). Give us a break. Tease me a little.

I’m sure I’ll get on my soapbox for more preaching once Valencia plays a competitive match. But I can’t say I have the same passion for the Spanish seleccion I used to have when I lived there. Or that I’m concerned about Brazil making it to the 2010 World Cup (they always find a way to sneak in). So this is my rest week, a chance for me to see what else is going on and open the floor for debate.

Besides, it’s also Thanksgiving week in America, a week where we unbuckle our belts and eat pounds of unhealthy food for no reason whatsoever. The centerpiece is a turkey, mixed with American football and stuffing served on the side, and bickering family members all around you. Fun fun!

But I digress. What’s on your mind concerning Valencia?

What do you guys think of Koeman?
We’re about a quarter of the way through with the season. What do you think?
Do we have a shot at advancing in the Champions League?
How’s the new stadium coming along? Anyone have pics?
How about the audit done on the club that shows we’re in great debt?
Or the voices of former presidents Jaime Orti and Pedro Cortes, who say
Valencia’s glory days
are now just a memory?

Talk to me, people. I need some football love …

Champions League qualification is dismal.. right now if we qualify for the knockout rounds, we should rally and win the whole damn thing… Watched the Murcia highlights, defenders still looked sub-standard albeit slightly improved, at least we looked fluid on the attack.

Not that anyone here cares, but my high school back in Trinidad just won our division championship for the first time in forever. Our team also has 2 or 3 players on the National U-17 team. Never thought we’d be back to our old glory days, so if we could do it Los Che certainly can, screw Orti, Cortes and whoever thinks otherwise.

    Amunt Valencia!

i think we need a left winger.. i love vicente but hes too fragile… nd van der vaart would be great nxt to manelele… 1 solid defender would be the recipe for trophies i think.

Curiosity: What’s the main source of news for Valencia?

AS & Marca primarily focus on Madrid-based stuff.

Sport, El Periodico focus on Barcelona-based stuff.

Then there’s El Pais and El Mundo. And a couple others.

But what are the news source(s) for Valencia?

    Chau.

    Just out of curiosity.

My main news sources for Valencia include the Valencian sport paper Super Deporte as well as local paper Las Provincias. Marca and AS have dedicated editions to many clubs in many Spanish cities, kind of like a pullout section for every club in their respective city. So that’s a good source. And from there, I go to the forums like Foroche.com and Xtratime and then generic sites like Soccernet and Goal.com.

google news type valencia enjoy latest news.

As for Vicente he is a brilliant player and if he stays healthy nobody can touch us on that wing. He is possibly better than joaquin.. when they are both on the wings are vicious. All we need is a reformed defence and a central playmaker. Silva isnt so much a play maker as an attacking mid. having VDV or Riquelme or Xavi Alonso type guy in the mid would be great.

As for the Euro game against sweden great game Spain really were on form and all over sweden. We proved that when we are on we are one of teh best football teams on earth. And having mostly Valencia players makes me proud.

One great source of valencia news is http://www.ciberche.net
Its a Valencia fan site and they collect articles from Spanish newspapers.
Cesar – I had requested you earlier to get that site in your radar..:) Might save you some effort as that site is pretty good at gathering Valencia related news.

Javier – I dont think google news gets enough news on Valencia (I havnt looked at Spanish version) as the English language news sources mainly focus on bigger fish like Barca and Real Madrid.
