No Confidence

quiqueyvicente_354×215_es.jpgWho here has confidence in the current leadership at Valencia? Raise your hands … where are you?

Besides reader Franky, who believes the people running the show at our club know what they’re doing?

Because I have lost confidence in this regime.

Let’s state it clearly: Quique Sanchez Flores isn’t the right coach for this team. I know, I know. The season’s just started. Give him time, etc. Etc.

I’ve heard it all before. He’s been here for two years and where’s the marked improvement in the club?

He alienates players (Viana, Tavano, Del Horno), gets into petty fights (Carboni) and makes suspect tactical decisions (playing prevent defense against Chelsea, Almeria after scoring first; overuse of Angulo).

What has Flores done to instill any confidence in any of the fans? True, it’s not his job to please us. But it is his job to win with the crop of players the management bought.

We’re right to expect more than 4th place with this squad, am I right? Who will get blamed when we’re playing Champions League qualification games next season? Sporting director Miguel Angel Ruiz? Baraja? Vicente? The new signings he doesn’t play?

I remember Flores from my days living in the Levante region. He was a journalist at the Diario de Valencia, writing opinion articles on the club. I found him insightful, a little boastful, but a smart read. I never imagined he’d become coach. I never realized what a mess he could be as coach.

There’s a part of me that wants to give him a chance. He’s young, he’s bright, he’s got potential. I just don’t think this club is about potential anymore.

Potential was in 2000, beating Lazio and Barcelona en route to Paris and the Champions League Final. Potential was winning the league in Malaga, Fabio Aurelio and Roberto Ayala sealing the victory and sending the city into a state of euphoria.

This club isn’t about potential anymore. This is a club that should be challenging for titles every single season. For them not to be doing so shows a lack of leadership at the top. That falls to Flores and his skills as a gaffer.

But it’s not only him.

How about Juan Soler, the man who owns the majority of the club and kept Flores in power over his adversary, Carboni? He spent lots of money, bought many players and drives the engine that is Valencia CF. He has to be responsible as well.

Sometimes he reminds me of the shrewd American businessmen that get into the sports business so they can make money. Get the community to build them a new stadium, rake in cash from sale of luxury boxes to other fat cats and then sell the team for a high premium.

New Mestalla, anyone?

Now word comes out that Vicente, our fragile winger, has lost confidence in the medical staff.

The oft-injured player is wondering why he’s oft-injured. He said it loud and clear so everyone could hear: ‘I don’t have confidence in the medical staff.’

And why should he? If you remember last season, Soler cleared out the former medical staff because of complaints over injuries.

Edu. Baraja. Fabio Aurelio. Vicente. All players with injuries taking significant time to heal. In Edu’s case, he was rushed back before he was ready and look at what happened? Right back to rehab. Baraja? They had no idea what was wrong with him. Same with Aurelio, who would run, fall over and be out for months.

Now, sounds like the new staff hasn’t a clue. Some of the staff are even saying Vicente’s problems stem from psychological issues, that he’s mentally causing his injuries. Obviously, the player’s upset and frustrated. He’s angry. He’s lost confidence. And this isn’t coming from some idiot blogger in New York City, but from the player himself.

He’s seeking solutions away from the club. He’s frustrated, annoyed and upset that this keeps happening to him.

Sorry to say, but so am I.

I’ve lost confidence in this team. Let’s hope they can prove me wrong. Let’s hope they can prove the lot of us wrong and we can look back at this post with glee and mockery.

Do us proud, boys.

Don’t be too hard on Valencia. I think you guys are in that awkward transition of making the shift from a great team to a great club. You have world class players, get a lot of respect, but the management hasn’t caught up yet (bureaucracy…the same everywhere). I don’t think Valencia’s management realizes how big their club is getting, because after being a “small” team for so long, to act and think like the big boys is a tough change to make. You can’t go from being a nice club to being assholes (aka Barca and Real) overnight.

Quique too must be realizing it. He might have signed on for Valencia’s potential only to realize that it’s already old history. So perhaps the next step is to get a like-minded coach, one that isn’t interested in long term development but wants everything right now, like Mourinho, Capello, etc.

Well it seems like the club is going to take action against Vicente for saying what he said. Not cool at all considering he had a really valid point.

I was one of the fans, who would vote for keeping Quique this season to continue his unfinished work with the group. I don’t know if I still feel the same.

In his first season with Valencia, he did well in fixing what Ranieri had broken. In the second season, he carried the team well in the UCL but couldn’t keep the beat up in La Liga or the cup matches; we said its from the long injury list and the too many matches per week. Some reasons that would keep fans patient and non hasty.

This season, and from a couple of starting matches, yes, most of us are feeling new reasons are arising for the failures, and new justifications are created by the coach. It’s not about injuries, I guess it’s about match-to-match tactics and player-motivation.

Anyhow, the good thing is, we are still at the start. One loss at La Liga will not be catastrophic. The competition is still on for all. Let’s hope we don’t lose it that early.

it was the club president that screwed us out of the best coach we ever had “Benitez” We should have catered to the man who brought us 2 league titles in 3 seasons with teh club. Instead we tell him off and make it so he wants to leave. Just plain stupid. Ever since we have had sub par wanna be coaches that dont know how to manage a super club. This sint Getafe people this is Valencia one of the top 3. And yet they treat it like the team that was relegated so long ago.

Its time we started treating this like a super club. bring in coaches that know how to train them. like Bosque.

Wholeheartedly agree with Javier… a club like Valencia deserves a coach in the class of Lippi, Del Bosque.. I’d take Pelligrini over QQ in a second too.. I wanted to give him a chance too but he’s just simply tactically inept..

Cesar. Thanks for the pub. I really appreciate it. Lemme say, First you do a terriffic job. Second, its undeniable about both are passions for the team and to be outspoken. Regardless of our opinions, I love the fact I have an outlet to speak of our beloved valenica and of all places, here.
    Now to my points.
    1) Flores. Its been 2 games. Lost 1, won 1. Not horrible, but not teriffic. Give the man time. Please, its not the world cup, its a LONG CAMPAIGN. 38 games in la liga, 15+ games possibly, Kings Cup, International Duty (10 games roughly) 3 weeks in the winter off and Maybe 2 months in the summer for some. We got till JUNE to get it right!
Flores is the man, He knows what hes doing, He had 2 of his most talented players out with suspension, players who are new into the mold who need time to gel with each other and a medical staff, um well, cant speak for somethin i dont know about, We’ll call them suspect.

    I know whats wrong Cesar,

a)you saw how bad we lost to Villareal
b)how good REAL looked and beat them by
c)how good Sneidjer played in 2 games in la liga
d)heard how insufficient and stagnant our attack was against Almeria
e)Watched how good Real looked and beat Villareal
f)Started thinkin about how i said in a prior post that the sale of Ayala was gonna come back to haunt them

    AM I RIGHT?

    Listen,
I know that what we have at Valencia may not be as good on paper as Real or Barca, and that they took a player we ALL WANTED SO BAD in Sneidjer, but we gotta get over that.
All the Big clubs in Europe with the exception of Real faltered their first week. Barca tied, Man Utd. tied & lost, it happens. We will get them later in the season, they’ll slip up.

Vicente, lets be honest, I would love to have him play every game and never come off, but really, he is now a lost cause. Things cant run through him anymore. Him walking off with an injury at Stamford Bridge last year was my last moment I remember of him and to be honest, its a game of what have you done for me lately. He is hurt b/c he doesnt condition himself to properly take care of his body. Hes definatly not overworked recently. He plays when he says he can. Is that not true? If doctors cant find nothing wrong, and he wants to play, b/c they have the confidence in his abilities, what more can you ask of a team? Fix him? How if their is no damage? Im sure they give x-rays and MRI’s.
And the other players, what did they have to rush them for?

Joaquin and Silva are now running the midfield. And when Fernandes is ready, and I cant wait for him. He’s super talented, it will be exciting and Vicente will then be an after thought.

For Edu, he blew out the other knee last year. He twisted it coming down. How does a team prevent that?
Not play him? Edu currently, if he might be injured, it could be just soreness, if he rehabbed well the difference will show in 6-mos to a year AFTER he has been playing at a high level again. We wont know about him till next year. I know this cause I had the same injury last nov. and thats what the doctor told me. Look at Michael Owen, same injury, not the same as before yet, would you agree?

What do you expect our Valencia to do with David Villa out? No one is as fit and as confident at the moment, nor has the amount of experience playing with this team as him.
You can always question a coach’s tactics and strategy, but how can you question him when he hasnt got all his talent at his disposal.
I could go on and on and in time i will. For now lemme just sum it all up.
Flores is a smart coach, and he wasnt the coach for the CL Final. You call that team ambitious in 2001? I call that a rarity. And Sanchez wasnt the coach. The team thats most favored before the tourney never wins it. Look at last years barca or chelsea. Liverpool made it. AC Milan wasnt the favorite before last year. Italy wasnt the favorite before WC 2006, with all the scandal going on in their league. So right now, though were not favored, thats what i like, we’ll be everyones surprise. Just for God’s SAKE COVER THAT DEFENSIVE LINE.

    Great BLOG CESAR.

Villa is critical, but he’s not the sole origin of our attack. We have been a team, not stars. We have Joaquin, Silva and Moro, Zigic and Vicente to help him and finish the job. Quique has a lot of talents. Sometimes he’s just at a loss what to do with them and other times too coward to do it.

What pisses me off the most is Soler’s action against Vicente. He always loves the club and gave everything to the club. He’s our star when fit. Yet he did this to our beloved player. Vicente’s haunted, but Soler did nothing to appease him. He agitates and upsets him.

Vicente’s last injury in August seems to be muscular injury. Can we do MRI for that? Yet from the pictures I’ve seen him in training, I can say he’s happy. I’m sorry for him. If it takes him going to another club to shine, I’d settle for that, ofc one outside Spain. I want the best of him and since he’s doing absolutely nothing in Valencia, let him to whatever he wants.

Again.. I must say. Its time to let Vicente go. He doesnt fit into Valencia’s plans anymore.
Cesar, you want improvement in the team, let them play the games first, then you can judge if they have improved or not.
Look at what they did in the offseason. They brought in more players than Sevilla, and Barca combined. Second only to Real Madrid. Wouldnt you agree they need time to gel. While i must admit, I dont feel now is the best time to drop points, but would you not agree that the team is poised to compete in the top 3 or 4 in La Liga? Final 4 of the Champions League? A semi- or finalist in the Kings Cup? Those are some big ambitions. And we now have depth and coverage in the squad up front and in the midfield. Now, if the team can just stay healthy, and peak at the right times, and gel together, We will win 1 of those 3 trophies. Last year, after Vicente got hurt against Chelsea, the team looked so flat. The team lost thier focus and offensively we abismal. By what they currently have on thier roster, they are poised to make a run better than last years. And if someone goes down, they now have someone to step right in. Competition at the club, I love it. Sanchez is probly playing guys now who you might not want in their in situations b/c hes trying to see if a player can produce when they need it most. With a tight game on the line, can they cut it? Its better to do it now than to throw them in a bigger game with too much on the line to gamble. Hes just making his team more definitive. Do you really think with the fowards he has on the team, would start ANGULO, in a Champions League must win to advance game, over Zigic, Moro, Villa combo? NO. But against Almeria, or VillaReal? Why not? Not AS much pressure. Those teams are hungry to beatable by Valencia’s standards. I like my man Sanchez, their no denying it. I think if he can have a healthy team in the CL we could grab it. HE IS THE RIGHT MAN FOR THE JOB. HE IS THE ONLY MAN FOR THE JOB. SOLER, with the exception of Fernandes deal and keeping Sanchez, he’s been yellow-carded in my book.

    AMUNT.

    IDEA for your next blog:

TOP BIGGEST MISTAKES MADE BY VALENCIA IN THIS OFFSEASON.

    1)Not signing Sneidjer.

2)Not signing Sneidjer. Hurt so bad it counts twice.

    3)Not signing Van der Vaart.

4)Not getting Ayala to stay, or a good quality replacement, to anchor the back line. (Hello, Fernando Meiria from Stuggart)

5)Pay 20 mil Euro for Zigic but offer only 14 then 18 for Van der Vaart? Are you nuts?

6)Pay 20 mil Euro for Zigic but offer only 18-20 for Sneidjer? Are you stupid?

7)Fined player who speaks about the med. staff and not listening to the player. Hes earned his tenure there.

What would you add to this list?

Ok i dont like Flores not because of the first 2 games. Its because of the first two seasons. Flores just makes bad judgement calls when he gets frustrated.

ALso he changed Valencia from a defensive force to an offensive team with a weak defense and a weak central midfield.

As soon as i saw that we were only playing 1 striker and that was villa against Villareal i knew we were in for it. The Villa up front alone is what caused vAlencia to go winless 4 games in a row near the end of last season. we need the duo strikers.

This season we get a bunch of new talent and yet we play the same old swan song. We need chanegs in the way we think in teh back

@Franky Vicente doesn’t fit our profile?? He made one of the best performance last year when he was around. six assistant and 4 goal in 20 games. Name one people did better than him.

Flores is great. He taught us that after one goal down, you should make some desperate moves and ended up in more crisis.

Our team is in deep crisis. The Vicente stuff just accelerate it. Our players are unmotivated, complaining, couldn’t organize effective attack. I think we did better last year when Albelda and Machena were playing DMs.

you think crisis b/c the last game, which valencia by the way, was of their offensive attacking power or lack their of. Well, i say to you that may be b/c our most lethal goal scoring player was out to suspension. Team just struggled b/c they are used to Villa’s style of getting behind the defense on a run and agression to win the ball almost every time its played to him. I cant really say for sure b/c I couldnt see the game here in the US, but i was keeping tabs on the stat tracker. They had more posession. One thing for sure, we let the wrong player go. Vicente should have left instead of Reguiero.

Crisis isnt 2 games, and 3 pts. and lets not forget 2 reds dont help i dont care who your playing.
Changes your entire playing style and mentality.

Crisis is 3 pts from 5 or 7 games in a row.
    Thats crisis.
Back our team, whole heartedly, dont judge the team by 2 perfomances. Look at the whole body of work. Look what sanchez was able to do with the team he had last year. They went deep in every competition they played and had the most players of any one team called on National Team duty at any one time. Also, so many injuries, Vicente, suprise, suprise! Give up on this guy. I would rather have a player with the stats he put up in 20 games for a whole season of 50+ games and not be hurt all the time than Vicente, 20 games and out.
