News? What News?
By: Cesar | October 18th, 2008
Valencia are back, playing Numancia this Sunday at the Mestalla.
Didn’t that two week international break between league matches for World Cup qualifying seem longer than usual?
I’m glad our Beloved are finally back …
In that two-week span, the news out of the Mestalla has been relatively sparse. No sackings, no new regimes; no new owners or even transfer talk. Just smiles and hard work …
For once, the scene around the club is serene. Everyone seems focused on doing their job and keeping Valencia top of the table for another week.
Numancia, currently in 17th place in La Liga, are your typical ‘trap game.’ What does that mean?
It means we take the newly promoted club lightly, slip up in play and lose our way … and the game.
Coach Unai Emery will have none of that.
“We’re in a privileged situation that I hope we can maintain for a long time,” he declared. “Now we have confidence and work to be as high (in the table) as possible but too much confidence is bad because we can’t think that we’ll win the same playing worse.”
“Numancia are a team that knows how they play and what they want and use their weapons well. Their game in the Bernabéu is an example to us that they won’t be easy. The demand will be very high,” said the former JFK actor.
Luckily, the international break has afforded Emery the opportunity to have his full squad at his disposal, sans David Silva and the forever-injured and now Mestalla snack-bar employed Curro Torres.
“It’s a nice problem to have all the players available.”
Sure is.
It’s true that Numancia are no pushovers. They defeated Barcelona on the opening day of the season and handled Real Madrid quite well the following week at the Bernabeu.
But since then, they’ve yet to win a match. They’ve also gone three games without a goal in that stretch. Of course, their fortunes could change. But do we really see that happening for the defending Segunda Liga Champions? Let’s hope not.
Valencia are riding a wave of tranquility these days. To make it clear, they’re downright boring.
Last season, there was news coming out of the Mestalla and Paterna on a daily basis. This year, it’s good cheer and merriment.
Trust me, I’d rather the Valencia ship be sturdy and steady than rocky and bloated by the likes of Ronald Koeman and Juan Soler.
These are good days to be a Valencia fan. Let’s cross our fingers and hope this continues for a bit.
As the preview for the game says, ‘over the coming few weeks, Los Ché’s credentials as trophy aspirants will be put under the microscope. As the UEFA Cup group phase gets underway, the real depth and quality of their squad will finally be on show for all to see. They will start taking on opposition of their own calibre in La Primera and by the time the halfway point approaches, the acid test will begin: Sevilla, Barcelona, Real Madrid, Atlético Madrid and Villarreal await them all in the space of around seven weeks.’
True true. So it’s important to win the games against clubs we should beat, pad our point total and go all out against the high and mighty of Spain.
I’m thoroughly excited about this campaign and how it’s shaping up so far.
By the way, let’s rubbish those Man City rumors about David Villa that broke this week.
According to goal.com, last Thursday, in a luxury hotel in Madrid, two emissaries of Manchester City met – for the second time – with Villa’s agent Jose Luis Tamargo. The Sheikhs that own Man City are convinced that a record breaking bid of €100 million will be enough to convince us that we have no choice but to sell Villa.
Whatever.
According to reports in Spain, El Guaje will not even consider leaving Valencia – a club that he feels a special affection for – unless the club forces him to leave.
He recently said: “I will stay at Valencia for as long as Valencia want me to be here.”
So let’s put that puppy to bed.
For everyone out there that wants David Villa, including Chelsea, Real Madrid, Manchester City and who knows what other teams, here’s a news flash: HE’S NOT LEAVING!
You know, he has no ambition … so there.
One final note … interesting article in the aforementioned goal.com regarding the greatest starting XI in Valencia history …
Here’s their XI …
Canizares
Ayala
Carboni
Pellegrino
Puchades
Albelda
Aimar
Mendieta
Kily
Villa
Kempes
What do you guys think? Looks pretty comprehensive to me …

According to the castrol index, ivica olic recorded the fastest sprint speed in the Euros which is surprisingly 5 km/h faster than that of david villa’s. Strong and fast, i like that.

Surprisingly good Best XI… I agree with Quin a little bit about the lack of pre-2000 names… And I certainly wouldn’t include Pellegrino ahead of Angloma. Not a bad effort though. Atletico Madrid, Heitinga in particular, really fucked it up today. At least Villareal dropped points so we should be open up a 2 point gap at the top if we beat Numancia (I mean when)

Its good to see my alltime fav player KILY GONZALEZ in the best XI, since he is for me the perfect football player. Rest is also good, but i agree with the above that there should be more old-timers in it, since we have a longer history than post-2000. For example, Waldo, Claramunt or what about our current vice-president Gomez??

Hi, I must agree with Daniel. For me he was the best back I’ve seen in Valencia because he might have only 2 bad games out of 38, always reliable. Another one who did not play long enough to be included was Fabio Aurelio. I think he was one of the most talented signings, his passes were always spot on which is what counts. Unfortunately he had a bad injury that kept him out for 6 months and he never really came back, which is often the case in such a hard agressive sport.
Valencia 1 goal up at half time, lets hope we make it,Adios and Amunt ……..AlmendrasPosted from

Ya, not sure if I agree with Pellegrino …
Fabio Aurelio could have been great but he was always injured … as was Aimar … but who was better than Aimar in Valencia history?
Aimar could have been one of the best and he had flashes of brilliance but not enough to be on the Valencia XI IMO.Posted from

The 4-0 result really flatters us. At time Numancia were outplaying us.
Renan was VERY shaky at times, and I still have doubts about him.
It was good to see Vicente score again. IMO an in-form Vicente is so much better than Silva

Follow the leader, leader, follow the leader! Hahah
I would like to share a rumor that circulates along Valencia about Pedja Mijatovic and his offensive words.
It seems that Pedja offered 40 millions for Villa and before the denial of the president, it(he,she) got angry and said that with 40 millions we have sufficiently because we are (please translate it to english)”muertos de hambre”… (We are the starving some ??)
Srry for my english

Great result today.. 4-0 probably is fair since we should have been 2-0 up since the 17th minute when they disallowed a perfect Villa strike. I got a bit uncomfortable when Numancia got back into the game a bit at 1-0, but it’s fair to say that we outclassed Numancia today. Another game, another 3 points, and the league leaders stroll triumphantly forward… AMUNT

@ David
starving to death! And no thank you Pedja, we will have enough money again so fuck up with those crappy 40 million. If we can get 48 million for Mendieta, than for sure Villa will cost at least 60!Posted from

@ johnnie; I’ll rise those 60 to 80……

However the price, we ain’t selling. If we could just make it through this season, plus a little (a little) bit of luck, we’ll be in CL next year and the thing’s pretty much solved. Then we can just pray that Banega would stay and with a nice striker we are set.
@ the list. I love Aimar but I’m not sure he should be on the list. For me he’s consistently not there. I’d rather put Baraja’s name on it. (I know absolutely nothing about pre-2000). Speaking of LBs, how was Carboni? I heard he was much more aggresive than Morreti.

I would really consider putting Pablito Aimar on that starting-XI… He used to be amazing….. I wish he was here.

Hi Cherry, Carboni was one of the greats, he was tough and he was always there and he could take the ball down the left wing fast. He was a similar player to Sergi Ramos.I was in Paris for the Champions final against Madrid and it was a loss because Carboni was out of the team due to an unfair yellow card he picked up in the Semis. The trainer put in Garedo (something like that, I cant remember his name because he’d only played a total of 20 mins that year with the team) He was disastrous, mistake after mistake. That was the importance of Carboni
Carboni on the left,Angloma on the right, Cani in goal.
Almost unbeatable.Although yesterdays 4-0 win was great,
We cannot be too happy, we are very very weak in the goal area. Goalies have bad patches (it is a very stressful area mentally !!) they also get injured , then what do we do. Timo is completely out of match practice and is supposed to be off in the winter break anyway which leaves us with the goalie from the third division.
NOT A GOOD PROSPECT IS IT. Adios.. AlmendrasPosted from

man, on another topic; Villa yells “Give me the fuckin Ballon d’or everytime he scores (figuratively) I think he has a great chance; he is way better than a lot of players in the list.

I thought when Vicente scoring we’re going to have a de javu, but than in the last minutes Villa make the different just like he always before!!!

I think the 4-0 scoreline was a bit too harsh on Numancia. Sure we deserved the victory but we still appear a bit shaky at the back. Renan made a couple of good saves but im still not too convinced by him. Also, the Albiol-Alexis partnership hasnt been tested against difficult forwards, so im not too sure if Marchena-Albiol would be better…

Valencia looked tired against Numancia, playing international football took a lot out of the players and it showed in the attack which wasn’t as balanced or aggressive as usual and to add to that the field was soggy which had the ball bouncing funny and slowed players down. But Valencia worked hard and eventually the second goal came and Numancia lost some of their will to fight and soon it was it turned to a massacre. Fernandes, Joaquin and Villa stepped up and kinda carried Valencia this game.

I think the unsung hero of our success is Fernandes the guy is all over the field making plays tracking back winning balls feeding Villa and Mata. Fernandes in my opionion is a hell of a lot better than Banega at this moment, so i am glad we have a coach that can recognize that. I would also like to see Joaquin just once cross a ball into the middle and find someone in a Valencia shirt instead of the constant airballs he puts up. Anyways we a strong side who will only get better as the season progresses. Amunt!
