My War Against Spanish ‘Newspaper’ MARCA
By: Cesar | April 8th, 2009
Allow me to jump on my soap box this morning.
I’ve had long-standing issues with the Spanish ‘journalists’ over at goal.com for a few months now.
They’re opinionated. They do a terrible translation job. They’re slightly biased towards the big clubs and thumb their noses at the little clubs.
Then again, I read them every day. I even use them often in this very column.
I give goal.com a fair shake for one reason: Most of their news is merely translated from Spanish news sources such as MARCA and AS.
My main bones of contention with goal.com come when they try to actually write; when they sketch opinion pieces about Our Beloved that seem to have come out of nowhere, with an incredible glee at the mishandling of our club.
Overall, they’re a fine site. They just annoy me at times.
But MARCA? I’ve had it with them.
For those that don’t know, MARCA is a Spanish daily sports newspaper that deals mostly with football-related topics. It has a readership of over 2,300,000, the highest in Spain for a daily newspaper and more than half of sports readership.
With such a high readership, they’re one of the main sources of football news in the country.
Problem is, they’re Real Madrid shills. They advance the cause of the Merengues, letting the higher ups of the team speak to the masses through their pages.
They also use the news paper as a propaganda piece, making sure that Madrid is always on the front page, front and center so they’re seen as the biggest and the best that Spain has to offer.
Of course, Madrid’s the capital city of Spain. So this makes sense, no?
It would make sense if MARCA was a Madrid news paper. But MARCA sells itself as a Spanish newspaper, a national repository for La Liga football news.
So why then have they been on a campaign since 2007 to obtain Cristiano Ronaldo for Real Madrid? Why did they do the same before David Beckham came to Madrid? Or Zinedine Zidane? Or Fat Ronaldo?
In the words of Manchester United coach Sir Alex Ferguson, MARCA is ‘…a vehicle to unsettle players on behalf of Real Madrid.’
And how.
This is the news paper that had the audacity to print a message that read ‘Do It For Us’ on their front page, in reference to Valencia beating Bayern Munich in the 2001 Champions League final.
Do it for us? Why? Because Bayern had eliminated Real Madrid in the semi’s. So do it for us meant do it for Real Madrid …
So why am I jumping all over them today? Take a look at today’s MARCA front page.

That’s right. David Villa and David Silva to Real Madrid for 60 million Euros.
Because getting Kaka and Cristiano Ronaldo isn’t enough, now they’re going to nick Villa and Silva from us for a mere 60 million Euros.
Is this journalism? Did these clowns go to school to learn how to write this garbage?
I’m not angry because I’m jealous of Real Madrid and their money.
I’m angry because this is irresponsible writing. It’s a headline and a story that exists for two reasons:
1 – To sell papers.
2- To advance the cause of Real Madrid.
MARCA want Villa and Silva on Madrid. So MARCA will run with this story until it either disappears (because it isn’t true) or Real Madrid’s directors actually try and buy the two.
Today, Vicente Soriano denied any thing to do with selling the two.
“We (Soriano and Madrid president Vicente Boluda) only exchanged a greeting because we know each other, but we did not speak a single word about football, certainly not about players,” he said.
“I am obliged to comment on this because the news is completely false. Whoever has released this false information could have contradicted it with just a call and we would have avoided any trouble, although that probably would have damaged their cover story.”
So true.
I am sick to death of this so-called journalism.
I am sure no one from MARCA would ever read this blog. But if they do, please step forward and defend yourselves.
Please tell us about MARCA exists only to advance the causes of Real Madrid and no one else.
Please tell us about how ‘fair and balanced’ your coverage is, when day in and day out it’s simply a newsletter for Real Madrid’s fans.
Please define what ‘journalism’ means to you, so we can understand how you can sell this drivel and call it ‘reporting.’
Look, I know Valencia CF have been going through a tough economic time. But what do headlines like this do? Exactly whose cause do they advance? Certainly not ours.
Do you think this type of reporting should exist in a national news paper?
Maybe I’m just tired of the endless stream of transfer rumors regarding these two. Maybe my head’s done in by board room bantering. I love football for the game on the pitch, not the back room shenanigans.
Something about this front page ‘news’ screams ‘disgusting’ to me and I had to say something.
It’s my own fault. I’ve been reading this garbage for years. But they’re truly damaging to the game and do nothing to advance anyone’s causes but their own and Real Madrid’s.
Truly pathetic.
Ok, I’m done. Time for a deep breath.

They also have a thing about McLaren there. Are RM pushing to buy out McLaren and give them immunity from the FIA? Couldn’t come at a better time for them, paying fines left right and centre. What a complete juxtaposition. RM get away with murder and the McLaren F1 team get a tiny bit of their noses in trouble and bang, £50 million fines and points deductions.

Are you guys kidding?? You want Banega back at Valencia?!? This guy is hardly even La Liga quality, I hope Atletico buys him; I’ll take whatever they’re offering. Manuel Fernandes with two broken legs is far superior to Ever, and I’d rather play Albelda, Edu, Baraja or Michel before I put him in the starting XI.
Oh, and Marca sucks. We all know this to be true.

-

I like how we both have the “fuck media-bias” articles going on Cesar. Keep up the good work

-

euh? This is really a war agaisnt Marca. I do know that they like to lie (or use their persuasive newspaper to lure out people from the truth) But, can someone tell me why you say that they are Real Madrid’s “extended” arm?
Don’t blame me for my ignorance since I don’t live in Europe, so I don’t know those kind of stuff (Is it an excuse that I’ve made up for myself? Let’s say yes!)

So I just read some dumb report on goal.com about us loaning bojan and selling villa. Obviously this holds no weight but it got me thinking… Do you think it would be a good deal if we did a straight swap of Villa for Bojan?

-

swap bojan and villa. it would be acceptable, but not good either, with the note that bojan stays permanently with us. he’s got a lot of talent, but we still have to do our utmost in developing his talent, still a long way to go, we still have to give him many practise matches, but if we manage to do so, he will be a superstar by the time he is 23. that would be fantastic. but if we only loan bojan, that’s not a good deal.

-

By straight swap, if you mean no money changes hands, why would we ever want to do that? The only reason we would consider selling Villa is if we desperately need the cash. Anything else, we are holding on to him. Or should be.

-

@ryan :more like messi than bojan..that would be a good deal

oh well, together with aaron and negredo, we will have another great strikers up front. i think if the situation gets worse, and we have no choice other than selling villa, we should consider rebuilding our squad like that.
i will give my opinion about our full squad and who to keep and who to sell
1. Cesar Sanchez: an experienced goalkeeper, still fit enough to play, and often saved our blushes, so i say we KEEP HIM.
2. Curro Torres: a 85-year-old wing-back, can’t run anymore, although he used to be great, but not anymore, so i say SELL/RELEASE HIM.
3. Hedwiges Maduro: a versatile player who used to be great in Ajax, but somehow faded in Valencia. but we should develop his talent more, and since he’s only 24, i think we still have time to make him great again. KEEP HIM
4. Raul Albiol: our future captain, he will be useful to us for a long time. the best center-back we have so far, our biggest asset in defence, no other choice other than KEEP HIM.
5. Carlos Marchena: has made a lot of joke this season, but since we still have no replacement in central-defence, we have no choice than putting him starting XI. but once alexis finds his old form, we should dump him into bench. but for the time being, or at least until Angel Dealbert settles well, i say KEEP HIM.
6. David Albelda: our ex-captain, has made more controversy than contribution to our team this season, is almost 33 anyway, i prefer younger mid, such as banega and sunny, so i say SELL HIM.
7. David Villa: no doubt about his ability, but perhaps we’re just not good enough to keep him. i want him to stay, but IF SITUATION WORSENS, we should find replacement such as Negredo or Bojan, and then SELL HIM.
8. Ruben Baraja: slightly better than Albelda, but 2 years older than him, it’s better he retires with other clubs, since we need younger and more powerful man in the middle, so i say SELL HIM.
9. Fernando Morientes: 33 year-old now. 2 years ago, i would say we keep him, but now i think once we’ve got replacement and we get our zigic back, we should SELL HIM.
10. Miguel Angel Angulo: 32 year-old now. ever since pablo hernandez rediscovers his form, he’s not needed anymore. no more question, i say SELL HIM.
11. Asier Del Horno: this man used to be great, but i don’t know why he’s almost done nothing this year, but actually he’s a better choice going forward than moretti. i think we should give him more minutes on the pitch, and take out the best of him again, i say KEEP HIM.
13. Renan: a little bit shaky, but purely due to lack of experience in Europe. he’s still 23 and yet has a lot of time to improve and become our next canizares, definitely KEEP HIM.
14. Vicente Rodriguez: one of Valencia favourite. but he will struggle for minutes since we already have silva and mata as well, although he’s done very well as super-sub. financially he’s not worth more than silva. so IF SITUATION WORSENS, although it is difficult, i say we SELL HIM first, and sell silva secondly, if it is really necessary.
15. Thiago Carleto: media said he is the next-roberto carlos. he is just 19, and we should give him more minutes to prove his worth. in the future, he would be great, but if we can’t give him more minutes, perhaps other teams can, so i think LOAN HIM.
16. Juan Manuel Mata: this kid is one of the most phenomenal discovery we’ve done in the last 5 years. can be even greater in future, and still 20 year-old. this is one of our main asset for future, so KEEP HIM.
17. Joaquin Sanchez: our best right-winger, so i would suggest we KEEP HIM, but as the last choice (i mean in the worst possible situation), we can also SELL HIM, because we already have pablo hernandez as substitute.
18. Manuel Fernandes: no need to explain. KEEP HIM by any ways possible.
19. Pablo Hernandez: clearly the one for the future, and is now improving at the age of 23 and good enough to cover joaquin, he is also our main asset for future alongside albiol and mata. KEEP HIM.
20. Alexis: he would have been our best CB if he hadn’t been injured all seasons. we should find a way to stop his injury problems, and KEEP HIM, because he will form a great partnership with Albiol.
21. David Silva: almost the same condition with Villa. but the difference is we don’t have to look for replacement for we have mata already. if situation worsens, we should sell only one of our three left-wingers, and probably SELL EITHER VICENTE OR SILVA. so if we sell silva, keep vicente. if we sell vicente, keep silva.
22. Edu: he has been on the surgery more for a longer time than he has been on the pitch. his quality faded so much, and i have never considered him as a good enough player for valencia. is 31 year old anyway, so i say SELL HIM.
23. Miguel: the only right-back we have so far, and good enough for us. we have to try to KEEP HIM. But considering our financial situation, and if a big offer arrives for him, we should consider SELLING HIM, and BUYING A CHEAPER REPLACEMENT, such as Jesus Gamez of Malaga or Cesar Azpilicueta of Osasuna.
24. Emiliano Moretti: will still be useful for the next 2 or 3 years. will not make a lot of money if sold anyway, so we should make the most of his ability. i say KEEP HIM.
25. Hugo Viana: he’s an interesting guy. if he doesn’t get injured so often, i think we MUST give him more minutes on the pitch, because i heard he’s technically brilliant. so i say KEEP HIM. he will be good alongside Fernandes.
26. Michel: clearly the one for the future. we must KEEP HIM.
27. Vicente Guaita: we should give him a chance to prove his worth, perhaps in other teams, so LOAN HIM.next i will give my opinion about our loaned players:
1. Ever Banega: he’s still 19 years old, and will be a great addition if he put away his porn video and magazines. will be great for future. so after he returns, we should KEEP HIM.
2. Stephen ‘Sunny’ Sunday: almost the same with banega, the differences are he’s spanish and he’s more like Spain’s Makelele for he is so aggressive in the middle of the pitch, and we will need his strength, esp for the future, for he’s only 20 years old, so after he returns we should KEEP HIM.
3. Ludovic Butelle: not needed anymore since Renan there, SELL HIM.
4. Nikola Zigic: it is a must for us to KEEP HIM, especially if Villa leaves, because we want to justify the money we’ve paid Racing for him. and he will be another option in our game style because he’s tall and good at heading.
5. David Navarro: he is already 29 year-old, and not a special defender, although still he’s slightly better than marchena. but i suggest we look for a younger defender, especially we have to see how Angel Dealbert plays first, so i say SELL HIM.
6. Ignacio Gonzalez: i don’t know much about this man, in newcastle, he is a benchwarmer. but i know he is a better attacking midfielder than a central-midfield. if he is that good, will be a great option in AMC. so i don’t know whether to KEEP HIM/SELL HIM.
7. Aaron Niguez: FM 2008 considered him as one of only 10 players in the world who has -10 potential ability, it means the best potential ability. will be interesting to watch for future, and he’s done brilliant in EURO U-18 or U-19 i forget in Austria about a year ago, labelled the next david villa as well, so i say KEEP HIM.plus we still have a couple of players in reserve team:
1. Lomban
2. Ximo Navarro
3. Jordi Alba
4. Aser Pierrick
5. Angel Montoro
6. Miku
i don’t know whether they’re good or not, but can any of you give any clue about these players?and than talking about possible replacement/addition:
in right-back: jesus gamez of malaga or cesar azpilicueta of osasuna
in centre-back: we have angel dealbert already, i don’t know much about him
in centre-midfield: we should sign a mediocre and cheap CM as a substitute
in striker: we should snap up alvaro negredo or bojan krkic.now to conclude:
I think we have to sell: Curro Torres, David Albelda, Ruben Baraja, Miguel Angulo, Edu, Ludovic Butelle, David Navarro
and for the last choice, we should consider selling Carlos Marchena, Miguel, David Villa, and either David Silva or Vicente Rodriguez
and we should consider loaning Thiago Carleto and Vicente Guaita to other clubs.
we should also get our banega, sunny, zigic, and aaron back from loan
and we should buy jesus gamez/cesar azpilicueta, mediocre central midfield, and alvaro negredo/bojan krkic up front.so our squad in the future would be:
Renan, Azpilicueta/Gamez, Alexis, Albiol, Carleto, Fernandes, Banega/Sunny, Joaquin/Pablo, Mata/Vicente, Negredo, Zigic/Aaron/Bojanit would be interesting
btw can anyone estimate how much money we’ll get from selling those players i mentioned above, and how much money we’ll have to afford for buying those players i mentioned above.thank you for your comment

-

i’m sorry in the conclusion i forgot to include fernando morientes in the transfer list

-

Tung Desem Waringin my friend i stoped reading what ur comment the moment i read tht u want us to keep marchena… 95% of the ppl want marchena out cuz everyone knows tht he is shitt!

-

ok i continued ur comment
logical

-

@Tung Desem Waringin: you don’t need to include Curro Torres and Morientes in the transfer list because their contracts end in June and vlc is not going to renew it obviously. So, they are no problem.

-

Getting rid of Morientes and Curro Torres would save us a lot of money since they both have a relatively high salary (possibly 3ME per year combined). So by getting rid of these older players we will lower the budget and save money.

-

Curro Torres 400.000 €,David Albelda 6.000.000 € ,Ruben Baraja 5.000.000 € ,Miguel Angulo 3.600.000 € ,Edu 4.000.000 € ,Ludovic Butelle 700.000 €,David Navarro 3.400.000 € total:23.100.000 €
Carlos Marchena 10.000.000 € ,Miguel 8.000.000 € ,David Villa 38.000.000 € ,David Silva 22.000.000 € ,Vicente Rodriguez 13.000.000 € total:91.000.000 €
Jesus Gamez 4.000.000 € ,Cesar Azpilicueta 3.600.000 €, Alvaro Negredo 12.000.000 € ,Bojan Krkic 12.000.000 €

TUNG….Of the players you havent heard of, MIKU is the most interesting, and example of Valencia’s cast offs.
He is a Venezualan striker 23 years old 5ft 11″. Just back from scoring a goal against Columbia bringing them 13 points in their bid for the world cup 2010.
He is on loan to Salamanca 2nd div. and last week scored the winning goal against Celta who are six points from ascension to 1st Div. This was his 11th goal this year in the Liga. In 2005/2006 aged 20 still on loan from Valencia he scored 20 goles and helped to bring Salamanca from 2ndb to 2nda division. This is an example of guys we have with talent while we keep Viana who hasnt played 1 game in the Liga this year.No doubt Valencia will continue borrowing him next season.
Valencia are top dogs at this Almendras

-

Why do you guys bother listening to it then? Just ignore rather than moaning. No one is going to read news on teams like Valencia or Villarreal..And Sport dedicates their whole front page to Barcelona ditto with El Mundo. Tuttosport is biased to turin based Juventus FC and there are couple of dailies that cover are biased to the Milan clubs. Just learn to live with it and I guess there is some paper called las provicas or something like that which covers Valencia news but they are not so popular in Spain and that’s it..And Mancs better shut up as we all know Jaap Stam’s confession in his autobiography and buggers poach kids form Italian youth teams without paying a penny. Fergie is the biggest hypocrite you’ll ever see after caldmoron..He constantly talked about Owen Hargreaves in the media after the world cup which almost provoked Bayern president to report them to FIFA.
Valencia fans are still daydreaming that villa and Silva will stay despite their financial woes. They can’t keep them even if they sell mestalla s their debts are really big.I am sure they will move to Barca, Chelsea or Liverpool this summer and better live with it. Now make a thread for The Sun and Daily mail as they have come up tow different stories that Villa will join Chelsea for 45 M and 50 M respectively.

-

@Bane, who the fuck would pay 3.6 mill for Angulo? I doubt that any first division – or second, for that matter – would even take him on a free transfer. The guy is complete garbage. Ahh, my antipathy toward the 54 year old is well documented on these pages.

-

hahaha, have you guys seen the recent comment from Corey – the Real Mierda blogger – on the Sevilla blog? “In much the same way you feel that living in a world of Barca and Real fans is trying, I live in a world where 9 out of every 10 people on this website despise Real Madrid. How do you think that feels? I got gang banged by 30 people on the Valencia blog for telling them to lay off!” That was a good “gang-bang”.

-

Don’t tell me that,I was just coping numbers from transfermarket.de You keep arguing with them hehe.Well yea he is overrated there, and also Villa is underrated, like just 38 millions,he is at least 45 millions.

-

have a look at this fellow, we could buy him for 7 million, he has scores 43 goals in 50 caps for Colo Colo and could be of some service i guess: Lucas Barrios

-

goal.com says that we are going to win 2-4 at Gijon. How do you think? btw is there any chance villa will grab the top-scorer award this season, because eto’o is superior with his barca this season. it’s a pity for villa, who has been rated as one of the best striker in the world, who has never become top scorer in his own country’s league.

-

@ ALEX, yeah you are quite right most people here are still making plans on who to buy. WE HAVE NO MONEY JUST A HUGE DEBT. The recent 50 million to help pay the players IS JUST A LOAN WITH INTEREST TO PAY. so this does not help, we owe hundreds and hundreds and it has to be settled up very soon. The players that are worth anything will have to be sold. Fernando has said as much.
UNLESS the present Mestalla site is sold or downpayments
are made in advance against rentable/shops on the new site, both very unlikely. They still have to startwork on it anyway

-

No more Bojan talk please, he isnt for sale.

-

in all honesty my favorite strikers other than Villa right now are Negredo and Guiza. Guiza is having a tough time in Turkey made worse by a messy divorce. And Negredo is young and talented but not yet in the Villa stages of fame. Both could be picked up fairly reasonably in the event of a sale of Villa. (hopes not)
