Musings after the Wedding

Back to the action, after a tortuous week. Kate Middleton is forgotten, it was a nice wedding but I never understood the hype anyway. Go to a Greek wedding, then you’ll have some fun.

1 – That match.

4-0 down at half-time. Won the second half 3-2.
As feared, we were mauled in defence.
As expected, up front we weren’t bad, but only bore fruit in the last half hour.

Some Facts.

To concede 6 at home is shameful. Yes, they are Madrid. They are bankrolled by millions. Despite many being rested, that team was utter class. BUT we aren’t Ponferradina (bottom of Segunda) for fucks sakes! We aren’t even some average fly-weight second rate mid-table La Liga side. We are VALENCIA! Where was the passion, the motivation, the pride in the shirt? I was disgusted. We are the 3rd best team in Spain, the best after the Old Firm, but we played like my brother’s u12 E school football team. The result was shameful. What is more, we can defend. We do play well at home. Our last home game was drubbing the 4th best team in Spain 5-0. And we thrashed then. We have only lost 4 times at home this season. That must not happen. We need to be competitive to keep our players, who will otherwise come to believe that we have reached the ceiling of our potential, and will leave for a new challenge.
A perfect example is Ever Banega. Fantastic player, possibly our MVP for the season. We can’t afford to lose him. But we will if we can’t keep moving forward and foreign clubs (Liverpool have been linked) come calling. He has reinstated his commitment to the club in the press this week, but lot’s can change.

2 – The aftermath.

Emery and hierarchy had a heated meeting after the game.
To quote:

“President Manuel Llorente was furious with his side’s humiliating 6-3 loss, and the coach was alleged to have defended his selection by pointing out that the same set-up had devastated Villarreal 5-0 the week before.

Llorente was also alleged to have criticised the attitude of the players, arguing they lacked fight and spirit, to which Emery concurred.”

Emery has done very well, make no mistake. He has led us to an incredibly successful season. A great Champions League showing(although we could/should have put Schalke away after which we could have beaten Inter), a possibly record-breaking points tally for the club is still possible(I stand open to correction but I think our current season record is 77) and we have played good football along the way. He has been unlucky in being in the circumstances of trying to keep up with the Old Firm in such incredible form. I think he will stay. I’m not sure how much more can be done as a manager at Valencia right now.

3 – Soldado bagged his 8th in 4 games. Magnificent. Say what you want about Madrid, but they can also produce some great young talent (not quite Barcelona, but still impressive). We also have them to thank for one Juan Mata.

4 – Osasuna on May Day. Away from home we have actually been better than at the Mestalla, picking up 10 wins and 32 points on the road vs. 9 wins and 31 points at home. Osasuna are a poor side, we should win, but with them in 18th and scrapping for survival we could have a fight on our hands. I’m expecting a response after last week. Osasuna don’t score many (37 in 35) but don’t concede either (41). We won our last 2 away from home, scoring 4 at Getafe and 3 at Almeria, so I back us for a win, 3-1.

Time for a turnaround I reckon.
It had better be Osasuna calling for a “May Day” come Sunday, or furniture will fly.

Dan

Timothy surely is happy after this one :D

I guess Valencia hasn’t changed a bit in the last 6 years. Capable of winning against Madrid, Inter, Chelsea, but also capable of losing to Segunda level teams. Never consistent. Always much potential, much talent, but somehow nobody has found how to use it 100% consistently. I suggest we get someone who is capable of finding that out.

we need better physicians and pcycologists
you cant cheat on those two and overstep them with new players and maneagers, this is the key to any successfull sport team sport or individual sport.
they are relatively cheap compeared to what players cost

How can one not give 100000% when playing for Valencia? i just dont get it, when i played football we had few fans, you dont really care about those that much, but if you know millions of fans are backing you up, craving for victory around the globe, how can one not fight until the end? Maybe its me talking shit while being wasted on a monday night (what else is new) but fuck, that is just fucked up!

    awesome news.
our training is cut down after 5 minutes and Emery stops the friendly training game against the mestalla team.

he didn’t like what he saw, much aggression and violence in the game it had to stop after 5 minutes.

you gotta support Emery, yes. he knows how to handle his players, no? :)

I think the players want Emery to leave but they dont want to lose3rd place. Its a tricky situation to be in with Villarreal only 3 points away.

I mean as soon as we heard Emery is getting a contract extension we’ve been seeing this from the players. Maybe they’re trying to send a message to the management?

I just cant wait until this season is over….

we must just solidify third. I don’t want any manchester city/Juventus/Roma/Bayern Munich shaped surprises waiting for us in champions league 3rd round qualifying. it is critical that we milk the competition for as much money as possible. then we can talk about managers and players etc.
the problem is he can’t impress many because he can only go down from here, unless he works a miracle and catches madrid/barca, which i cant see happening, at least without significant investment

@Dan : What you’re saying is correct, we desperately need 3rd place (more than Villarreal do – who have already had a successful season).

We cant afford to lose 3rd place…I think we can only hope that we win the next game and Villarreal mess up, we desperately need some breathing space.

I know some players are acting like children, but Emery just doesnt know how to react with these situations.

For example, this recent problem with Chori was just because he was fined for something he did 4 months ago..why is Emery doing this right now? Why chase something that happened ages ago? There is no need for more unrest in the dressing room.

No. Thats the mistake a lot of people make. If you don’t restrict yourself to just the rankings, there’s a whole lot he can improve without catching the top two. This is perhaps getting a little repetitive, but there’s more to the game than just the position in the table. Individual results, and number of points, for instance.

I understand exactly what you mean but in this specific and very special case, with valencia right now unfortunately the money is all that matters, so that we can finish the nou mestalla and get debt free and comfortable as a functioning football club again. even if we play the worst football in the world and get 30 points, as long as we end third, i would probably be happy. this unfortunately must be emery’s only objective until the club is fixed. a wounded animal will take needed food in any form offered, so long as it will sustain for a little longer.

@7amanito: Yeah they did the same thing with Pellegreni last season, which eventually lead to canceling his contract. The problem isnt in Mourinho, Real have to accept that they cant compete with this Barcelona team.

Welcome to the world of feel good spam, Dan.

In response to your previous post, I realize that money is our priority right now, and that means our primary goal is getting third place and Champions League next season. However, the points I mentioned are not at odds with that goal, but are steps in the same direction.

How would better performances, results or more points block our progress to third place? Isn’t it the other way round?

maybe i should have registered my heavy sarcasm more clearly for nike and air jordan heels :) .
i understand what you’re saying. the thing for me at least in the short term is that emery has done a good job with the extremely difficult circumstance that he is in, because he is (or at least was until our back to back defeats) 100% on course to achieve exactly what we need done. for me, everything else, for now at least, is secondary as a concern. but again i understand exactly where you are coming from.

Haha i got it Dan! Such a nice, admiring fanbase you have in the advertisement world ;) *buys high heel nike’s

I think we should stop putting us in such a bad spot! Extremely difficult circumstances?? Like what?? We have players that are very effective, we cant complain at all. And until last year, we had Villa, Silva, etc. Now we have Mata, Tino, Banega, Topal, Soldado, is that so bad? How is that difficult?? Stop trying to put guilt and “our situation” on our club, we still got a great team which is not matched by many in the league. So Emery shouldnt be given too much credit, he inherited a team with great ability. Only prob was the club behind the team, but in no way did he get limited resources to work with (except for NEW signings).

    @ Johnnie.

aah but johnnie my man, lets look at the situation he stepped into. lost villa and silva for estimated 75m euros. then spent 25m bringing in 5 new players in a virtual team overhaul. he has a highly expectant board and tough financial circumstances. not the prettiest spot to be in :) but i understand your point. less whinging needed. we have a team. (that cant defend, but a team nontheless)
