Morientes Wants a Goal
By: Cesar | April 19th, 2007
I’ve always liked Fernando Morientes. He was a quality striker for Real Madrid for eight years and always left his heart on the pitch, for club and country.
When he signed for Valencia after a spell with Liverpool, I couldn’t be happier. A true talent playing for my favorite club.
This weekend marks the annual clash of the titans at the Bernabeu between our heroes and Real Madrid.
Moro hasn’t been back at his old stomping grounds in a few years and had a lot to say prior to the match.
“It is a stadium that I have a lot of affection for,” he said. “I scored a lot of goals there in the white of Madrid and it would be very special if I did that with Valencia.
“This game is more than about three points,” he said. “They are a rival that must be considered a candidate for the title.” Madrid lie 5 points behind leaders Barcelona. Our boys lie 1 point behind Madrid.
Valencia slipped out of the top four before returning to that spot last weekend. Morientes is keen for the club to secure a top four spot before considering aiming for the title.
“We will have to see what happens, but we want to be as close to first and as far from fifth place as possible,” he stated.
“The aim of the team at the moment is to qualify for the Champions League and then we shall see in the final few matches whether we are in contention for the championship or not.”
Let’s hope he celebrates by knocking in 3 goals … how do you feel about that, Nando?

Check out this great article from Goal.com regarding this weekend’s game. It’s sort of a neat history of the rivalry between Madrid & Valencia and says ‘This fixture can be widely accepted as the biggest match in the Liga calendar outside of El Clasico. In many ways, it is the biggest contest between two quintessentially Spanish sides, as the aforementioned premier footballing jamboree of Spain carries the epic tenor of a clash of nations….’
I’d have to agree. What do you all think? Please check out the article.

Meh. It’s an okay article – the goal.com article that is. My complaint is that it somewhat ‘circles the wagons’, although in its defence it is billed as a ’series’ of articles. Not the greatest of introductions in my opinion. The article seems to suggest the Valencia-Madrid match-ups seem to be divorced from any idea of drama, that it is solely about the football. Is this really the case? Is playing against Madrid ever only about football? I’d think No. It’s about being a David to Madrid’s seemingly perpetual Goliath, it’s about being the neighborhood corner store to Madrid’s glutinous Walmart, modesty against unmolested excess.
But yes, Morientes. I greeted Moro’s arrival to Valencia with an indifferent shrug. He was effectively rotting at both Liverpool and the end of his tenure at Madrid, with arguably his peak at Monaco when he helped drag the team to an unexpected CL final. So, my expecations were not very high. But I have to say that I am happy that Moro is playing for Los Che. He’s the perfect foil for Villa, and the partnership would be even better if they had a smart distributor in central midfield.

I agree that Madrid-Valencia is certainly not just about the football. The vitriol that flows from Valencia supporters against Madrid is pure. Then again, most Spanish supporters against Madrid … small v. big, Wal-Mart against the corner store (great analogy!).
Now imagine Raul Garcia next year with Villa and Morientes? Hmm … intruiging!
