MARCA and Yellow Journalism

By: Cesar | July 14th, 2008

Does MARCA have anything better to do?

The veritable Spanish sports daily/bird cage liner must be bored after the exaltation of the Euro 2008 championship. When they’re not trying to speed the transfer of Cristiano Ronaldo to their beloved Real Madrid or trying to coax Raul onto the national team, they grow bored and despondent.

What to do next? Make up stories!

Today’s MARCA breaks the world exclusive (aka made up) news that new Valencia chief Juan Villalonga is hoping to persuade former Spain coach Luis Aragonés to become the new Valencia coach and break his deal in Turkey and is also preparing bids for Rubén De la Red and Xavi Hernández.

What?

So let me get this straight …

Villalonga, who has been here one week, is going to fire our new coach on the first day of pre-season to bring in a grizzled 69-year old retread.

He’s going to lure De la Red from Getafe (via Madrid, who own his rights) AND commandeer the signature of Xavi, Barca stalwart?

Ya, RIGHT!

Come on! Who is to believe this stuff? Who makes this garbage up??

IF this crap is true, Villalonga’s an idiot.

Like Valencia CF haven’t been through enough already. Now they’re going to fire their new coach just before training camp opens? They’re going to bring in Aragones, a European champion, but a tired old coach who feels he isn’t respected in Spain? They’re going to bring in XAVI??

How am I supposed to believe this stuff?? Honestly, how?

It’s pure, idiotic yellow journalism on MARCA’s part, who long ago stopped being an objective news paper.

I love reading MARCA. I collect the paper every time I go to Spain. But I’m not reading them for their solid reporting or their blazing editorials. I’m reading them because they make me laugh, they say the darndest things, they blaze a true ‘journalistic’ trail …

Don’t get me wrong. I’d love De la Red on our squad.
I’d kill to have Xavi on our team.

But how is this stuff based in reality?

One day they’re talking about our impending doom. The next we’re buying Xavi and De la Red?

Give me a break … please!

What the MARCA article fails to mention is that we’re signing Aragones, De la Red and Xavi to use as make weights to bring Sir Alex Ferguson and Cristiano Ronaldo to the Mestalla in a swap deal with Manchester United. Villalonga was seen having lunch with the Glazers at the Waldorf Astoria in New York City, where plans of merging Manchester United and Valencia a la InBev – Anheuser Busch were also discussed. Villalonga and the Glazers plan on forming an Anglo-Valencian super club that shall dominate world football for generations

I’ve ceased to be surprised by anything that Marca pulls like that. I’ve read too much Sid Lowe to take it seriously.

Daniel should expect a call from the Marca folks; he’s much more creative than the hacks they currently employ.

ursus lool good one! im know that this report is BS but i like one thing bout it! the confidence in getting big names such as xavi! i mean hes the untouchable in barca and silva is untouchable in valencia, why do they have the gutts to make a big and we dont have the guts to make a bid! i just love the concept blendered with the confidence of getting the untouchable! it gives me satisfaction! im so feelin blue bout our buying list that a rumor or a lie of buying a real player (xavi) excites me.. poor us valencia fans :( .. Corey: technically, Aragonés having a new contract means nothing because his contract with Fenerbahce stipulates that he can leave at any time with no penalty (Fenerbahce’s board must be as clueless as we are when it comes to signings). However, it’s not going to happen. Apparently Unai was shocked when he saw Marca, as was Villalonga and everyone else. Villalonga has assured Unai that it’s all rubbish invented by Marca.

Oh, someone a couple of posts ago was asking about our preseason. They travel on 23 July to Ermelo in Holland (as usual) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ermelo

On 26 July (my birthday!) they play against German side Bochum, and on 2 August they play against Borussia Monchengladbach (or however you spell it!)

On 3 August they fly back from Dusseldorf airport to Valencia, then fly to England after a couple of days to play Newcastle-Valencia on 9 August at St James Park. I’m not going to that game as I will be in… Valencia (grrr, great timing as ever) but I am sorting out tickets for the game if anyone needs any. You will need to email me your passport details etc and I will make you a member of the Che-UK supporters’ club.

12 August is the “presentation” game which will ALSO be the Trofeo Naranja game. Rival TBC.

Then it’s the Spanish supercup. Apparently 16/17 August in Valencia and 23/24 in Madrid, but I believe it will be on 17 August (that’s what they said before)… I hope it is, as I’m over in Spain for that and have booked a much pricier flight returning to UK on 18 August as a result, and booked 18th as annual leave, whereas normally I would not have done so. Anyway, all tbc.

Following on from my last post. 12 August is against Vitesse Arnhem.
    http://www.vitesse.nl/programma_spec.asp?w=1&wid=828&agenda=1&date=1-8-2008

That’s according to Vitesse’s website… Valencia’s website says NOTHING about the rival, according to them it’s still to be confirmed. But I think we can pretty much confirm it’s them….

Wow, they sure have creative minds. I’d love to have Xavi in Valencia, who wouldn’t? But that’s crazy! Why on earth would Xavi leave Barca and come to Valencia, especially at a time like this? I don’t mind rumours, but at least be a little realistic! AND de la red?? I’m speechless…
Anyone who wants to know which matches we’re palying and when can go and check Valencia’s official website. http://www.valenciacf.es

Ali, the match on the 26th is in Bochum, which is at least two and a half hours from Frankfurt by train.

Bochum don’t seem to be selling tickets on line, but I wouldn’t expect it to be a sell out.

Funny news! Ofcourse at the moment we are far from Xavi, but i’m sure we need a high class central midfielder NOW.
I also agree with Bob. Sure it is shame on us that news about buying Xavi ic concidered a compliment for us.
