Make or Break
By: Cesar | May 22nd, 2009
So here we meet again, another life or death battle for Valencia CF’s future, a weekly war for survival.
This week, it’s state rivals Villarreal, who lie in 6th place, tied with Our Beloved on points at 59.
Atletico Madrid sit 4th, with 61 points. They play Athletic Bilbao this weekend and save a Kun Aguero dive, would be somewhat lower. So be it. They’re where they are, we’re where we are and let the chips fall where they may.
Tomorrow’s battle is very simple: Valencia need the 3 points to continue hoping for Champions League football next season.
Not a draw and one point. Not a loss and 0 points.
A win. Three points. That’s it.
If we drop points against the Yellow Submarine, we all know what the future could hold. We don’t need to repeat ourselves, for we’ve been discussing it all season.
Right now, the focus is on getting the victory and heading into our last match against Athletic Bilbao at the Mestalla, focused on taking care of our end of business.
The Champions League is out of our hands. We don’t control our destiny, thanks to last week’s sucker punch against Atletico. We need to hope and pray Athletic come off the mat for their match and defeat Atletico. We have to hope that if Athletic doesn’t do the business, Almeria does it next weekend.
No maletins this year, the strange Spanish phenomenon of sending briefcases of money to football clubs in hope of luring them to play better. We don’t have any money.
Right now, it’s about concentrating on taking care of our end of the bargain.
Defeat Villarreal. Nothing more. Nothing else.
Villarreal are a tough out. We all know that. We played them in what many consider the match of the La Liga season in the first go-round, New Jersey’s Giuseppe Rossi scoring a penalty in the dying embers of the match to close the scoring at 3-3.
The Yellow Submarine made it to the quarterfinals of this season’s Champions league before succumbing to Arsenal. We know they’re talented. We get that.
Unfortunately for them, midfielder Santi Cazorla is out with a broken leg. Now word that influential holding midfielder Marcos Senna is battling a thigh injury.
Still, with players like Rossi and striker Joseba Llorente up front, Villarreal aren’t lacking in the scoring department.
As far as Our Beloved, Vicente is a doubt as is Joaquin after a scare during this morning’s training session.
Carlos Marchena will be back from suspension, so that’s a welcome relief. Yes, I just typed those words: Having Carlos Marchena back will be a welcome relief.
Besides him and save an injured David Silva, we’ll have the full artillery. David Villa, Juan Mata, Pablo Hernandez, etc. You name it, we’ll throw it at Villarreal.
Over 2,000 of our most fervent supporters are making their way to Villarreal for the match, courtesy of Valencia CF.
I only hope and pray they get a good show.
I hate to say this is the most important match of the season, as I’ve said so often for so many matches.
But it is. We need this match and an Athletic Bilbao victory/draw over Atletico Madrid to move on to next weekend and our next ‘biggest match of the season.’
It’s important, for the future of our club, for the viability of Valencia Cf as a competitive sporting entity. I hope they play like they care. They’re saying and doing all the right things in the lead up.
But what matters most is what happens on the field tomorrow evening.
Call that whining or whatever you want. But know one thing: Valencia CF fans genuinely care about their club.
They care enough to come to this blog, to translate Spanish articles into their native language, to scour the Internet for tickets, to get together in the spirit of harmony and support.
We may be sh*t talkers but there’s a reason: we care.
Fair weather, we’re not. Can’t say that about many fan bases in Spain …
Amunt!! Let’s do it this weekend …

I seriously do not understand why you hate Emery so much, jeez he has done well considering the circumstances, no payment, financial turmoil, constant rumours, no money to really buy his own players, inheriting a team that just about survived relegtion last season and nearly took them to cl football in one season. If he gets the axe it will show that Valencia is back where it started, sacking mangers, directors etc withou really giving them a chance no offence but thank God Fayez is not in charge

Bane:
I can see what you mean. No idea why Bilbao will play in 3rd qual. round. I guess because they are not cup winners. So this is sort of consolation prize for them, kudos to Barca.
Playing qualifications end of july is not such a bad thing, gives you edgier, more competitive football in preparations, not just worhless friendlies…Posted from

Fayez:
I can agree that Emery needs to improve his tactics, that’s why he needs another year with Valencia. Sacking him would be the stupidest thing, another coach fired, another huge payoff. Be realistic, considering all the turmoil of Soler/Koeman era, Emery has done a great job. He had a magnificent start of season, we were la liga leaders so everyone’s appetite grew. Then we dropped to 7th place and he was cursed again. Then we reached 4th place, 2 points from 3rd Sevilla, and everyong hailed him again. And now apparently we’ll be 6th. Europa league for us next season.
We need to play “uglier” football when playing away, this is what Emery needs to understand. When at Mestalla, then we need to play attractive. Personally, I don’t care how we play away games as long as we collect points. It can be the most boring football imaginable, just get the result. Play Italian if needed, wait for opponent’s errors. The game against Espanyol was clear in this respect. First half: boring as hell, 0-0. Second half, Emery gets nervous, tries to press forward, we concede two from counterattacks. Game given away.
Emery will be doing fine in the future, he has enough intelligence.Posted from

@ Amir: So youre happy with the people currently running our club?
I never said I hated Emery (I think he is a nice guy), I just stated that he isnt good enough to coach Valencia. Maybe in a few years he would be great but our current position isnt much higher than what he achieved with Almeria last season. Just look at what Ramos did with Real Madrid and their terrible squad. He is a coach with some tactical sense.
The problem isnt in sacking managers, we just arent choosing the right ones in the first place. If we choose a solid coach to begin with we wouldnt have been in this position. But I guess youre too busy thanking God that the current management is ruining our club.

You know the only reason why Atletico Madrid are in the CL is because they sacked Agurre. If he was around they’d still be in a mid-table position. There is nothing wrong with sacking a coach but you just have to find the right replacement. The same goes with Espanyol…do you think if they kept their previous coach they would just from last place to 12th?
The only reason our squad were almost relegated last year was because they waited too long on Koeman..if they fired him earlier (or if they kept Flores) then we might have been in Europe without the cup.
So there is nothing wrong with letting a coach go if he cannot deliver the minimum requirements needed and Emery hasnt delivered. Under Flores we were 4th and 3rd in his time (and we were 7th before that under the Ranieri disaster)…He played boring football I agree, but he got us into the CL.
I really like having a stable coach that stays for many years…but Emery doesnt have the right tactical skills at the moment to be a coach for Valencia. I like him as a person and he is a great motivator, but that isnt enough for us. In 5 years he might be but we cant wait that long.

i was only talking about Emery not the whole staff running the club and you gotta think Fayez if we sack Emery who on Earth would want the Valecnia job anyway? No cash to spend total turmoil behind the scens, sacking left right and cetre and the lsit goes on. You gotta realise the situationa nd circumstances, we can’t afford to sack him even if we wanted to and we can’t attract or afford a good enough coach to replace him

i agree with siva, give the man some time, none of the other coaches in la liga has had to deal with what Emery has had to, Valencia is a shambles lets be honest. Yes he took Almeria to 8th but they did not have internal turmoil to deal with, it was as smooth as you could have wanted. I think he has stood up well enough in the circumstances tha we ought to show some confidence and loyalty in him. The reality is that he will almost certainly be here next season and hopefully prove the doubters wrong

Amir, all I know about Mathieu is that he’s 6′3 and ginger.
-
Height is a very nice bonus for a fullback. But not as nice as pace and sometimes having one means you lack the other. So hopefully he isnt a slouch. According to Fifa crossing is one his best skills… But lets wait till we can confirm that by actually watching him ;PPosted from

Emery did what he could do with an extremely imbalanced and aging squad that was not built to play attacking football… Emery is the first Coach at Valencia in a very long time that had an attacking philosophy, from Cuper onwards Valencia was the primer defensive team in La Liga… when Emery came he the squad was kept the same, so he had to take a team built to play defensive football and make it play attacking football. So that alone greatly limited how well Emery could implement his style of football at Valencia. but even coaching a squad that was not built was to suit him, he did a good job but what stopped him from crossing the last hurdle into the champions league was the injuries and lack of squad balance… Silva has no alternate and his injury put the whole squad out of balance injury prone Vicente was injured and Angulo who has really declined this season was unfit which meant that a player had to play out of position on the left side so Mata could play in Silva’s position, that change ruined Valencia’s attacking rhythm and was responsible for the terrible attacking play against Atletico and the imbalanced attacking play against Villarreal, to add to that with Manuel Fernandes the midfield lacked any real spark… and the defense has been make shift because of injuries to Moretti and DelHorno and only Miguels return to fitness stopped it from being even more makeshift… Valencia played their two most important games of the season against Villareal and Atletico with a makeshift attack and makeshift defense and because of that were at a disadvantage both games. when Valencia is fully fit with Villa, Silva, Mata, Joaquin, Manuel Fernades, Albelda, Moretti, Marchena, Alboil Miguel and Cesar the team is almost unbeatable but if any of those starters goes out due to injury the the team goes completely out of sorts and is easily beaten especially away from home… the truth is Valencia’s squad needs fixing more so than it needs a new coach… Emery should defiantly serve out his contract and hopefully the squad will be made more balanced in the summer so that Valencia fans don’t have to go through another season hoping nothing happens to the right back who has no alternate and so it can play Emery’s attacking style of football properly.

@ John.
We didn’t have a makeshift team against Villarreal. Here is the lineup for that game:
————–Cesar
Miguel–Albiol–Maduro–Alexis
——Marchena—Baraja
Joaquin——–Mata——Pablo
———–VillaOther than Silva and Fernandes, this is our regular lineup. This is the defense Emery has used since Fernandes got hurt. He now favors Alexis over Moretti at LB.Valencia should be used to it by now. Obviously, Silva being out doesn’t help either, but I would hardly call this lineup makeshift.
Against Atletico, we had the same defense. The big difference was that we played 3 in the middle.
Our biggest problem isn’t defense (it is bad don’t get me wrong) but we have NO PACE in central midfield. Albelda, Baraja, Edu, and Marchena are all slow as fuck. Michel is just not good enough, so don’t bother me with him. Fernandes is our only CM with pace and he is out.
Other teams play counterattack against us and we get murdered. When the other team counters, usually Miguel is up near the striker, so at best we have 3 defenders. Marchena and Baraja/Albelda/Edu are just too slow to cover for the defenders. I don’t thing Banega will help this. Sunny could though. We should keep him next year. I’m not saying Sunny should start, but he can be a sub easily. He has good pace.Posted from

Latest line:
Soriano is going to announce the name of the buyer of the old Mestalla-parcels plus the tower which will come next to the Nou Mestalla, plus this buyer will also buy the shares of Soler, Soriano and Silla so he will accuire a 51% share capital, leaving Soriano to continue as president of a Valencia totally renewed. This all will be told tomorrow to the council of Valencia so they can cancel the amplication of capital cause they dont need it anymore, since the buyer will pay 350 million euros for the parcels and the new tower….
Hope this is true!!!!!

Guys even if the stadium deal goes through….i don’t think we can hold the 2 David’s….As far as our league position is concerned we have only ourselves to blame…due our bad form in the middle…but once we picked it would always be difficult since big matches were at later part and even more difficult facing 2 direct rivals in last 3 matches that too away matches….
We need to bring back some of our loan players, get rid of old players….A 25 goal season striker if villa leaves( he will probably) and very good central mibfielder….
If villa goes to madrid can we get Van der vaart or Ruben de la Red…?Posted from

I am one of Ruben De La Red’s biggest fans, i think he is freaking awsome!!! i just feel so bad for him because of what happened in oct, we do not know if he will even be allowed to play again yet the doctotrs are still trying to find out the route of the problem that lead to his collapse…DE LA RED IS AMAZING
