Let’s hope these Who’s don’t follow the trend

By: dan_c | September 13th, 2011

There is an alarming trend towards anything containing the word “who” being awesome.

Before anyone thinks me crazy, here a few examples.

1. Horton hears a …

2. Doctor …

The …s in the Grinch (one of the best movies of all time, especially for a 10 year old, undisputed)

3. The …(arrow pointing upwards)

4. Guess …

5. … let the dogs out? …? …? … …?

So when many fans responded to the draw of Genk in the champions league with exactly that worry, maybe just maybe they’ll be better than we expect. They may be awesome.

On the other hand though, if they were awesome, we probably would know something about them.

When my dad asked who Valencia was playing tonight and I told him, his response was an outraged “What did you call me?”

a812

And they are from Belgium. I know. Thank God they’re not from Bruges (because Bruges is awesome, as the movie testifies).

Unfortunately I can’t offer much devastating pre-match analysis, except that they’re belgian champions, play in blue and don’t have Romelu Lukaka.

Hopefully by the end of the game I’ll be able to offer more than this about the perceived whipping boys of the group.

Let’s not be over-confident and complacent.

And lets hope that they are far more in the vein of “… got voted off American Idol?”, a far more pitiful, less interesting or dangerous or awesome kind of who.

Amunt

I do have this feeling that if Genk scores we will play 5 times better afterwards.

A repetition of this and we wont get any further in the Champions. In the first half we had 13 shots at goal and only 3 on target. At this rate the other two teams need not fear us and we have to beat Genk to come third. Nowhere near the vitality of the Atleti game. Banega played hard all the way through so did Piatti. Our defence was good and we should keep Miguel in the team who as well as defending well gave some excellent passes.Rami strong in defence but plays too much forward. In the first minute he was up front trying to head a goal and of course in the second half he made the best try of the match with a chileano kick, BUT we have forwards to do this, while he is up there, the defence is weak and we wont be able to play like that against Chelsea.Emery at fault for far too long to make a change.
No score at half time against genk and something is wrong. Why bring on Canales only 7 minutes from the end, no time to get into the game. We are playing Barcelona a week from now perhaps that will toughen us up for Chelsea
a week later (although we have got Seville in between !)
Regarding Alves in goal, he had nothing to do in the first half but made a couple of excellent stops in the second. Fingers crossed for the next match!

That save Alves made was brilliant, im still convinced he’s better than Guaita.

Now we have to win against the Germans home and away. If you cant score against a team like Genk with that much posession and with that many chances on goal then we’re in trouble and I have a feeling we might not make it to the next round.

Also I hated this Parejo role, its just working out with him in this formation and he isnt linking up with the attackers or wingers, maybe we should have started with Canales instead.

Mainly didnt like Feghouli, that guy really needs to practice his shooting as most werent even remotely on target.

Almedras kind of sums up the rest, if you get that many shots off you really have to score. If we want to get anywhere in the champions league we have to convert the chances we get at a much better rate. Last year vs Shalke was a bit of the same story, we had to chances to win it and blew it by not taking them.

Martijn: Youre right, his shooting is terrible. Although I think his crosses were quite good.

Maybe its the many changes in the team? Im not sure how is that hurting our performance?

Im alright with rotations, however I think we went too far yesterday. I just dont like playing with 3 midfielders…it doesnt seem to suit us.

Feghouli is very talented and has impressed in most of the matches he played. So perhaps a little more match practice will do him good. Speaking of, with people like Aduriz and Canales not playing much of La Liga, why not start them in CL matches? They are definitely good enough and it rests our regular players.
