Leaders
By: Cesar | September 21st, 2008
I know, I know. It’s early. The season is only three games old.
But still, after all the stuff we went through last season, isn’t it nice to say we’re the leaders in Spain?
That’s right. Valencia CF are on top of the Spanish La Liga mountain after three games courtesy of our 1-0 victory over Osasuna.
It wasn’t pretty. It wasn’t easy. But it sure is satisfying.
Coach Unai ‘Swing Vote’ Emery doesn’t feel the same way I do.
“I consider being leaders as just an anecdote because we are one of several teams on seven points,” he explained.
“What is important now is ensuring the team continue to improve, progress and win complicated games like this. We have only just began and we must take it all step-by-step.”
I agree. But can’t we smile a little anyways?
Yes and no.
Sure, we’re doing well. But we’re doing exactly what we should be doing, getting by plucky teams like Osasuna, picking up points during the easy part of our schedule.
That’s not to put down the Basque team. That’s just to say we’re better and we should be beating these teams.
The true test of our mettle will come against clubs like Real Madrid and Barcelona, the true tipping points in Spanish football.
So, 1-0.
- It was a scrappy game against a club that came in looking to play a scrappy, defensive scheme. They frustrated Valencia, plugging numbers behind the ball, looking for the counter.
But I think we played well against them. True, it wasn’t a work of art. But there’s improvement. This is a match last year’s team would have lost. Today, Valencia were able to adjust and take the three points.
- Everything considered, we’re playing ok. Now think about how much better we’ll be with Marchena, Vicente, Baraja and Silva. Watch out, Spain.
- We went a man up in the 63rd minute after Cesar Azpilicueta made a foolish challenge on Mata. We took advantage and a lovely pass by our star player David Villa to Mata was converted into a pretty goal. Here’s a video and mind you, Villa passed this ball with his LEFT foot … he might have been injured and not 100%, but what a player. WHAT A PLAYER!
- The Alexis-Albiol central defensive combination is starting to mesh. With Marchena coming back soon, I hope their development isn’t impeded.
- Edu looked ok in the midfield. I kind of wish we could see Edu in his prime, before the knee injuries.
He’s a classy player and a classy person and a great representative of the Valencia club.
- Renan’s also starting to come into form. Too bad about Timo, but it looks like we may have a ‘keeper after all.
- Joaquin sometimes plays lie he has no idea how to play football. I didn’t like him today. Maybe he was more concerned with the Sevilla-Betis derby later in the day.
So a good win and three points. Now, midweek against Malaga. Another game we should expect and garner three points. AMUNT!
*One more note that’s sort of related to Valencia: Today’s the last ever game at Yankee Stadium, the pre-eminent sports stadium in the United States. The stadium opened in 1923, christened ‘The House That Ruth Built’ for home run slugger Babe Ruth’s many trips around the bases.
They close the doors today and will open a new stadium across the street next year, complete with all the amenities sports fans crave today. Lush suites, stadium bars and restaurants, bigger seats, etc.
The one thing that’s been swirling through the news these days is how Yankee Stadium has so much history, so much significance in American sports history.
So why are they tearing it down?
Money. It all boils down to making more money. The team will make more money. The fans will pay more money. The players will be rolling in money.
There will come a time, very soon, when the same thing will happen to the Mestalla, Valencia’s grand old home. It opened approximately a month after Yankee Stadium did in 1923 and has its share of wonderful memories. Next season is expected to be its last season in service, provided Vicente Soriano and his henchmen can get their act together and finish the Nou Mestalla.
I think it’s sad that the people in charge of these grand enterprises are so short sighted as to sell us on the notion of progress at the same time as they push the nostalgia of old.
It’s like, ‘This new stadium is going to be great,’ while at the same time saying, ‘But we’ll miss the old one so much. So make sure to buy a seat as a souvenir.’
I have wonderful memories from both places. My first ever Yankees game, seeing that lush grass for the first time in person and watching my favorite player, Don Mattingly, blast a home run to win a game.
And my first game at the Mestalla, against Real Madrid, Zinedine Zidane’s first game with the Merengues. I remember the yelling, the boisterous crowd, the fast action on the field and the plucky team from Valencia that wouldn’t stop fighting.
Sports is about so much more than money. I wish the people on top would realize this one day.
Bye, Yankee Stadium. I’ll miss you.

Edu was useless and didn’t do anything that whole match, he was the attacking midfielder and Fernandes the defensive midfielder was much more involved in Valencia’s offense than him. Renan had a slow day where the most he had to do was grab balls in traffic. other than showcasing his good distribution skill. Renan didn’t do or show anything today. First place isn’t that important now whats important is keeping a good home record and keep picking up points. la liga is a marathon because its such an even league every point counts.

as for the match Valencia show a lot of patience and did the little things well like keeping the defensive line when you have 60% of the possession and they kept bringing the ball forward and looking for an opening. all in all it was a good victory because it showed Valencia could gring out games as well as win the high scoring games.

Definitely feels good to be atop of d table. I think the Valencia of last season would definitely have dropped points here. Hopefully we can keep up the good work over the next 3 or 4 league games

Its great that Villa gave the assist for the goal, but im really hoping that Emery rests him for the Malaga match (at least he can be on the bench and used if we get in trouble). Maybe we can start with Morientes-Angulo for the Malaga match with Mata and Joaquin on the wing?
With regards to our midfield, I think Edu is starting to become quite reliable (he certainly isnt better than Albelda or Baraja, but we can count on him when one of them is missing). Fernandes is starting to gel into the team and I just wish he would try and aid the attack a bit more.
As for Renan, he still hasn’t been tested fully (thanks to a somewhat reliable Alexis-Albiol partnership) so I am not quite sure yet if he is the goalkeeper we are looking for.
Finally, am I the only one that isnt convinced with Pablo Hernandez? I know its still too early in the season but im not quite sure if he is better than Arizmendi?Posted from

Villa – Mata
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

I think that Pablo will come good. He’s bit nervous, but have still done some good passes.

Oh Fayez, Pablo is a class above Arizmendi for sure. He played very well in the first game of the season but hasn’t been as good since then.
On a separate note, Albiol sure looked like he ate his Wheaties today didn’t he? Definitely one of the best performances I’ve ever seen from him. Maybe our defence has some hope after all..

we’re in the top of the table…!!!
i guess this is the 1st time we manage leading the competition after three past years (the last time i remember when we won 4-0/4-1 against Depor in Riazor during 2004/2005 season)Posted from

The next 2 games are definitely winable. I just hope El Guaje stays healthy.

I was watching the match live, and I must say it was extremely nerve wrecking to see los che struggling with a more than evenly matched osasuna. Albiol did good, but alexis wasn’t exactly the defender i think i would count on in a bigger game..
Nice assist by villa on the left foot, but i was rather appauled by his selfish plays instead of passing to a teammate in a better position to score. One player that actually impressed me was Masoud who was pretty much tearing the los che defence like nothing. He shone flashes of audacity, vision and passing that reminded me of the way aimar played. Lack of a playermaker has still yet to be solved since aimar’s departure
Heavily relied on mata’s passes since joaquin wasn’t playing like he should be, but mata’s passes were easily read by the defence and more often than not, been intercepted easily. Had to fall back on Albelda for mf passing later on too which is a worry for me since a solid replacements for the old guards are still shakey.
i suppose mata/silva will be the creavity of our current squad. i think they are great players that will grow with age, but i’m not too keen on banking valencia’s creativity all on the left flank. If only fernandes is a little further up and creating more chances…
a game that we could have easily drawn or lost, I would say we were really lucky to walk away 1-0 up.
a good result for sure.
just needs a creative spark in the team now.

this is bollocks.bring back koeman and put jabba back in charge of the midfield.nobody would get round him.poxy first place, get rid of this emery bloke,i mean who is he anyway.hes obviously cluless.valencias problem at the moment is we dont have a player with really bad hair.

Hey Cesar will this season be our last season at the Mestella or next season?
If its the next, then I can postpone my trip to Spain.
Was hoping to catch our last few home games at the Old Mestella.
If its this Season, then whoever is gonna organise tickets for Timothy should put me in consideration too.Posted from

Qishen did we watch the same match Osasuna never looked remotely like if they were going to score. and as with all the rest of the games this so far this season the right side with Miguel pushing forward and inter passing with Joaquin/Pablo was the side where the creativity came from. both Alexis and Alboil played extremely well and lost concentration or any stupid mistakes.Valencia dominated the game from start to finish but had trouble breaking down a well organized Osasuna that put most of their players behind the ball and played for a draw. luck had nothing to do with that win Valencia played well.

I agree with John, Osasuna had one real chance early on in the game and that was the end of their attacking. With a bit more creativity in the midfield we probably could have gotten more than one past Osasuna, but it was a good performance overall

Now think about how much better we’ll be with Marchena, Vicente, Baraja and Silva
I know I’m negative. But that doesn’t seem possible with Valencia. When they are all back, we’ll have, say Albiol, Mata, Joaquin/Pablo out.

What an incredible pass from Villa, clinical finish from Mata. Villa is a true superstar and I will feel good about our chances against anyone as long as he is on the pitch. On another note, I was under the impression that goltv was not showing our match so I didn’t bother looking… I’m assuming most of you guys are not in the US, but if you are is there any other way to watch?

Fights are rarer in Spanish football than say, England … they do happen, though. But I think you’ll be ok …

John>
Well, I wouldn’t say Osasuna was winning. I would think they took their chances alot better and approaching the 6yard box before they got the red card. We were a little wasteful on a lot of the chances. Maybe it was because it was “osasuna” so i was anxious for us to score early too
