La Copa Strikes Back

Well in 30 minutes we will be treated to Villareal hosting Valencia once again.
In our previous encounter we battled it out to a 0-0 draw in Mestalla with some atractive football.
Valencia dominated the pitch but failed to capitalize.
That does give us some advantage going into this match.
A single goal by Valencia means Villareal need to score 2. A draw will not suffice.
It is really hard to call what will happen.
These two have odd encounters.
Valencia and Villareal make great rivals in that you never know who can come out on top.
Emery in the last press conference says to expect “attractive football”
Emery also said that “Valencia go with confidence against a rival who is very strong in their stadium. But that ultimately the teams are equals and Valencia know they will have to work hard to get a result.
Valencia will need personality and use their positive attitude to achieve victory…. All week the team have been preparing for this day. For those of you who understand spanish you can hear the press conference here.
The squad Emery has put together is the same squad as last time.
5 men back. Dealbert Matheiu Costa Bruno and Stankevicius
In the middle Maduro and Banega.
With Joaquin and Mata ont he flanks and Soldado as the single target man up front.
A very defensive line up but at the same time risky as Valencia are in need of a crucial away goal.
Personally i think this squad can certainly win the match for us.
I doubt very much Villareal will be content to sit back and defend as they did last time and that mean space in the back.
If Banega can create through passes to Mata and Joaquin we may be able to pose a threat to their back line.
Im so anxious for the starting whistle.
Ok on to the news of our newest signing.
Well one rumour now a fact is Adil Rami joining Valencia.
Valencia announced the signing of the centre back this week though a price tag was not revealed.. sources claim the figure of around 6 million was likely.
Rami will remain at Lille untill the end of the season and join the squad in the off season.
“I’m delighted to have the opportunity to complete a dream of playing for one of the big clubs in European football,” Rami said. “Valencia are very well known not just in France but all over the world.”
Currently in his fifth season with Lille, Rami has played in every league game in helping Les Dogues to the Ligue 1 summit and has featured in all four of France’s UEFA EURO 2012 qualifiers.

I dont think Emery can be blamed for the second half meltdown.
What did he change in the half? Nothing.. first half we dominated the match and got a 2 goal lead.
They came back with a solid goal.
Were given a phantom penalty and that was the game changer.
Once on level ground the defence just caved completely.
Valencia cant defend with 5 defenders on the field.

Which is why Valencia should play with 4 defenders and play to their strengths, which is using its immense talent in the attach to control the midfield and score goals.
With the kind of defenders we have, no matter how many you put in defense, good teams are going to get through more often than not. If you play defensively and conceded them the midfield, that just helps them along.

@Javier: Personally I think Emery takes a lot of the blame for the 2nd half loss.
Things were going OK in the first half for us. Garrido (Villarreal’s coach) noted the problems in their system and changed it. He didnt change the formation but changed the tactical positioning etc.
Emery changed the tactics to something more defensive…When it was 2-2 he should have understood his mistake (like a good coach would have) and addressed the system to cope with the one Villarreal had.
To concede 4 goals in a Cup match when u were 2-0 up is not acceptable. Even without that penalty we still would have lost.
Throwing all the blame on the players (they take part I agree) is just ignoring what a bad job Emery is doing at the moment.
When was it the last time we played like real team? For the past 2 months ive only seen a good group of players that look lost on the pitch showing moments of individual brilliance.

I agree with Nithin.
Look….Villarreal played with the same formation at Mestalla and at home. Both of them were 4-4-2. Why cant Emery just stick to one but change the individual tactics from defensive, offensive or balanced depending on the scoreline?
Seriously its confusing for us how do u think the players feel? On day its 4-4-2, the next its 4-5-1, then its a 5-4-1 and again a 3-4-3.
This isnt pre-season. Why cant he just stick to a 4-4-2 or 4-5-1 if a stiker is injured and just play with our strengths?

And to be honest, I find it hilarious playing with 5 defenders and conceding 4 goals. Only in Valencia.

@ nithin exactly I wouldn’t call myself an expert but in our case our best defense is a strong offense which will keep them on thier toes a bit and not allow them run riot all over us. I for one wanted out but when the game starts I want us to win especially having a two goAl lead at half. WTF!!? Anyways hope this is a blessing in disguise even though any loss is never good. Painful to see us collapse like that.

I agree the all out defence was silly. But it was working.. but like always once the tide turns Valencia simply doesnt know how to change the flow.
For that you need an Albelda or Marchena to be vicious and set the tone and break the will of the opposition.

Then why is Emery playing 5-4-1?
It was typical Emery. Play like shit in the first half (lucky Banega goal, good Soldado goal), and get even worse in the second (what does he say at halftime? seriously…).
He , as usual, had no Plan B. He took off Banega (who I didn’t think was that great personally) and brought on Topal (who I like, but why play with 2 DM’s when you already have 5 fucking defenders?).
Just…ridiculous.

Also, Stankevicius was terrible. Gave Rossi too much room for the first goal, committed the penalty for the second, and play Villarreal onside both times for the last two goals.

Yeah, can’t imagine why Stanke would be on the field. I watched only the second half after Villareal scored two, but he was poor.
Javier, the point of having 5 men in defense is to prevent the opposition from scoring or at the least, from scoring many. If they score 4, then it didn’t work. Period. Yes, we didn’t concede in the first half, but if that was due to the defensive tactics, the same tactics should’ve worked in the second half too, shouldn’t it?
And really, what irks me the most is this. Its not just the team that is much better at offense than the defense. Its the coach too. Emery is really poor at defensive tactics. So he is going with the tactics that he is bad at training and his team is poor at implementing.

I agree with Javier.
Valencia kept Vila-real quiet for 3 halves out of four, but in the last they figured out how to break the defense down. Until then the attacks were all one-way.
Personally I prefer teams built with a solid flat-back four as a base. That being said, there are managers like Garrido, Wenger, Emery and the-dude-who-was-in-charge-of-Werder-Bremen-whose-name-I-can’t-be-bothered to -Google, managers who prefer to maximize their players’ attacking abilities. Werder and Arsenal have experienced such dramatic reverses, but I don’t think their managers changed their ideas about football.

I wonder why ‘keeping Villareal quiet for four halves’ was our goal. Is this Xerez playing Barca or Valencia playing Villareal? And have you thought that perhaps Villareal were quiet for the first two halves cause they were content with that? Cause that was part of their game plan, one that actually worked?
Emery isn’t a manager that maximizes his players attacking abilities. He undermines his players attacking abilities. And there’s no reason at all to put him in the same sentence as Wenger. Emery is scared of playing attacking football against good teams. Wenger is quite the opposite.

Who cares if we kept Villarreal quiet for three halves. Clearly, they were fine with a draw in the first leg, because they were confident they could win at home. Yeah, we were the better team in the first half of the second leg, but how did the second half go?
What does Emery say to the players at halftime? Every single match they are shit in the second half…
